As soon as the impala was brought to a stop in front of Mandy's house, Kate's feet hit the ground at a run.
Hannah met her at the door and hugged her. "Katie!"
Mandy motioned for Dean to join them inside. She was always chipper and smiling.
Kate and Hannah knelt down at the coffee table and talked excitedly.
Mandy offered Dean some coffee, which he gladly said yes to.
A few minutes later, Hannah looked over and glared at Dean.
Dean chuckled. "If looks could kill, I'd be dead."
Mandy turned her head to look. "What is that about?"
Dean smirked. "She doesn't approve of our child rearing methods."
"Ah." Mandy said with a chuckle.
"I was thinking, if it is okay with you, of course.. we are just a few hours away. I think it would be good for Kate to still be able to see Hannah sometimes. I know she misses her." Dean said.
Mandy beamed. "Absolutely. Hannah has been asking non stop when she would see Katie again."
Dean leaned back in his chair. "Kate, I think you had something you wanted to say to Mandy."
Kate walked over and apologized for dragging Hannah into all of it.
Mandy smiled and assured her there were no hard feelings. "Hannah, I would like for you to go get that stuff."
Hannah ran up the stairs but yelled when she got to her room.
Mandy and Dean sprinted up the stairs.
Kate gasped when she saw the box of stuff spilled on the floor. She carefully put everything back in the box.
"Is anything missing?" Dean asked.
She looked at everything and nodded her head. "There is a small bottle with powder in it."
"What kind of powder?" Dean asked.
Kate merely looked at him. She was picking up the non verbal language that he and Sam shared.
Dean threw his hands up. "Great."
Ryan stepped into the hallway. "Looking for this?" He said with a laugh.
Kate stepped toward him. "Ryan, you don't know what that is. It is mine. Give it back."
Ryan held it above his head and laughed. "Finders keepers."
Mandy scolded him. "Give it to her, now."
Ryan pushed Kate away, ignoring Mandy.
"Ryan." Mandy said.
Ryan rolled his eyes. "Shut up, mom."
Dean walked over and grabbed Ryan's wrist, causing him to drop the bottle into his hand. "I'd listen to your mom."
Ryan was indignant. "What the hell is your problem?"
Dean bent down a little, "My problem is that what is in that bottle is dangerous. My problem is that you shoved my little sister. My problem is my dad would have kicked my ass into next week if I even thought of talking to my mom like that."
Ryan shrunk down. "Uh, sorry." He said before darting back to his room.
Dean spun around and saw Mandy's face. "I am so sorry."
Mandy held up her hand. "Don't be."
Dean scrubbed his face. "I have a younger brother who can be a pain in the ass at times."
Mandy smiled slightly. "He has had an attitude issue for the past year or two. It is okay."
Dean handed Kate the bottle "Is this all you need?"
Kate smiled at him funny.
Dean furrowed his brows. "Why are you looking at me like that?"
Kate hugged him. "You called me your little sister."
Dean scoffed but hugged her back. They went back down stairs and Dean took the box to the car.
Hannah and Kate got to play for a few hours before they went back inside to get a drink.
Hannah skipped over to Dean. "You know, if you ever want to hit Ryan, you can totally do that."
Dean choked. "I told you I don't hit kids."
"Ryan isn't a kid, he's a nuisance." Hannah said.
Dean smirked. "I thought Kate was showing you self defense stuff."
Hannah smiled brightly. "She did!"
Mandy chuckled. "She knocked him off his feet a few days ago. He will eventually get the message."
Hannah grabbed Kate's hand and ran back outside.
"So there really is no saving Brian?" Mandy asked once the girls were gone.
Dean shook his head. "The best we can do is maybe keep his soul from going to hell."
Mandy sat back. "I thought all of that was just stories."
Dean shrugged. "All stories come from some version of the truth."
"That poor girl." Mandy added.
Dean looked out the window.
"If she ever needs a place to stay for a bit while you all are out doing what you do, she is welcome here."
"That is really nice of you. I'm sure she would love a sleep over or two. We are still working on how we will manage things... after." He said.
Mandy was quiet as she watched the girls run. "I was so worried that Hannah had lost her innocence but look at them."
"From the attack?"
Mandy nodded. "She was in shock for so long. Kate has been a good friend to her."
"Partner in crime, you mean?" Dean asked lightly.
Mandy laughed. "They make a pretty good team, don't they?"
"Don't tell them that though. We about didn't make it through this mess." He said truthfully but still lightly.
A little while later, Dean called Kate back inside. "Time to hit the road munchkin."
Kate frowned. "Awww do we have to?"
Dean crinkled his nose and mimicked her tone. "Yesss we have to."
Kate hugged Hannah and Mandy before saying her goodbyes. "I'll call you." She said as she walked to the car.

As they drove along, Kate asked Dean about his own mother. "What was she like?"
Dean struggled to remember. "She was a really good mom. She always sang to us."
"My mom liked to sing too."
Dean reached over and put his arm around her.
When they stopped at a rest stop, Kate drew circles in the dirt with her foot. She kept opening her mouth and then deciding not to talk.
"Alright, spit it out." Dean said.
Kate's face turned red. "Well, I thought that.. maybe I could do what I did for my dad, to help you remember your mom more."
Dean raised a brow. "Oh, you are actually asking me before messing with my head."
Kate blushed deeper. "Yes." she squeaked.
Dean put a finger under her chin and made her look at him. "Yeah, kiddo and thank you for asking."
Kate gingerly put her hand on Dean's and soon, memories flooded Dean's mind.
He smiled as the deep seated memories sprang to the surface.
Kate stood back and watched him.
He relaxed his back and sighed deeply. "Thank you."
Kate smiled. "You are welcome." She touched his hand again but quickly drew it back, gasping for breath.
"Kate, what is wrong. Katie, sweetie breathe for me." Dean said, putting his hands on either side of her face.
"You didn't see it?" Kate asked.
"See what?"
Kate blinked. "You... you must have blocked it out."
Dean drew her to him. "You are going to have to give me something to go off of."
"It was him!"
Dean held her at arm's length. "Breathe. I've got you."
Kate finally calmed down and ran around the car to grab her phone. She quickly dialed John's number and shifted nervously until he answered.
"Hey short stop." John said pleasantly.
"It was him." Kate managed to get out.
"What was him?" John asked, confused.
"The-the man with the yellow eyes." She was struggling to breathe.
John put the phone on speaker and snapped his fingers for the others to come. "Kate. What did he do?"
She burst into tears. "He killed our moms."
Dean rushed over to her and caught her before she fell. "Katie, how do you know that?"
She buried her face in his chest. "You saw it happen."
"What is she talking about Dean?" John asked.
Dean sighed. "She did the thing she did for Brian, to help me remember mom. All I saw was mom singing and just floating around like she always did. You know, dancing with Sammy and stuff."
Kate held her breath for a moment to stop the hyperventilating. "He did it. I remember now."
John stumbled back and sat in a chair. He had been chasing a ghost for years and this was the first big lead that he had. He just didn't know why the man had healed Sam or why he kept showing up. "Kate, listen to me. You did good. Calm down. We will get him."
Brian bit back tears. "You find him and you kill him." He said, looking at John.
Kate had regained her breath. She somehow remembered the night her mom died. She remembered the man and the fire. She remembered being picked up and wrapped in a blanket. It was like looking at herself from above. She felt disconnected. She gasped as realization dawned on her. It wasn't her memory, it was her mother's, but how?

Dean pulled the car up to Bobby's yard and gently tapped Kate's shoulder. "We are at Bobby's."
Kate stretched and sat up. She had fallen asleep after the rest stop.
When they went inside, John, Bobby and Brian were standing over a map and had notes written down in their journals.
Kate cleared her throat. "I hope you aren't planning to go after him yet."
Brian whirled around.
Kate sighed heavily and put her hands on her hips. "He is connected to Hellen, somehow. Don't ya think we 'ought to figure out the connection before storming the castle?"
"Attitude." Brian said in a low voice.
Kate threw her hands up. "You can't take my intel and run with it, that is called being bad team players."
John studied her for a moment. "Okay then what would you have us do."
Kate looked at what they had been working on.
Dean was standing over her shoulder reading John's notes.
"Here." Kate said, pointing to one of the notes. "He isn't always at Hellen's so if you go over there and try to catch him or make her tell you about him, you are going to tip him off AND ruin my plan."
John sat down across from her. "We have thought of that."
Kate squinted her eyes.
John squinted his back.
"I can read her and get that information for you." She said, not pulling her gaze away.
John looked up, behind her head and smirked.
Kate threw her elbow back and caught Dean's hip. "I saw that."
Dean scoffed. "Saw what?"
Kate tapped the glass in front of John. "You acting like you were going to hit me in the head."
Bobby turned around so he could hide a laugh.
"You are being a bit of a brat." Dean told her.
Kate put her head down on the table. "Sorry. We just need to think clearly here."
"We will. Cut the attitude." John said with a wink.
Brian sighed deeply. "What am I going to do with you?"
Kate looked back at him and smiled. "Love me with all your heart." She turned back and grabbed a clean sheet of paper. She focused on drawing something as the others waited. She turned the page around. "This is him." She chewed on her pencil.
Brian looked at the drawing. "This is your nursery." He passed the page around.
John grabbed it and looked between it and Kate. "Did you see her?"
Kate shook her head. "I just have her memory."
Brian looked at her. "What do you mean?"
"After we got off the phone, I was still kind of freaking out and suddenly remembered the fire and John grabbing me. I remembered the man with the yellow eyes. It isn't my memory though, it is mom's."
Brian took the page back and studied it.
John walked over and whispered in his ear that she was on the ceiling, like Mary had been.
Brian motioned for Kate to sit in his lap. He hugged her tightly. "I am so so sorry, Kate."
"Why do I have her memories?" Kate asked sadly.
No one had a clear answer.
Sam ran his fingers over the paper and frowned. He didn't quite remember the night that his mother had died but the emotions were strong. He never got to know her and it pained him.
Kate put her hand on his. "If you ever want memories of your mom, I can show you."
Sam smiled weakly. "Thanks, Katie."

Two weeks later, Kate scribbled notes down on a slip of paper. She had manage to bring up the man with yellow eyes to Hellen without raising questions. Hellen didn't give her any reliable information but the fact that she was hiding something spoke volumes.
They knew he was a demon of some kind but didn't know why he had attacked Mary and Ruth or why he showed up at the hospital. There didn't seem to be a clear link between the yellow eyed demon and the one that made a deal with Brian.
John was antsy. He spent 17 years chasing Mary's killer and he felt like he was so close. The connection to Hellen wasn't clear enough to attack though.
Brian started to slip again, except at night when Kate helped him sleep. His dreams of Ruth were so vivid and some of the things he was certain were not memories. He figured Kate was adding in some stuff to ease his mind.
Kate was sitting at the table, worrying over her journal.
Dean sat down beside her and handed her a piece of jerky.
"I'm not hungry."
Dean pulled her hand away from her mouth. "If you keep chewing on your fingers, you aren't going to have fingers left."
Kate looked down at her hand and frowned. She took the piece of jerky and gnawed on it.
He put a gentle hand on her back and pulled her to him.
Sam shuffled into the room with a stack of books. "Here. I found these."
Kate read the titles and franticly flipped through the pages.
"What are you looking for?" Dean asked.
Kate waved her hand in dismissal.
Sam shrugged his shoulders. "Give her a minute."
Kate was frustrated and slammed the book shut and threw it.
"Whoa, whoa. Kate!" Dean said, narrowly missing the book with his head.
Sam walked around and squeezed her tightly. "We can't help if you don't tell us what is going on."
Kate burst into tears. 'The time' was close by and she was losing her ability to hold it together. What if her idea didn't work? What if John messed up the spell? What if someone else got hurt trying to help?
Sam rubbed her back for a while. "Will hitting Dean in the head with a book make you feel better?"
Dean scoffed.
Kate smiled a little. She looked back and Dean and apologized for throwing the book.
Dean told her that it was okay. He knew she had decent aim and would have succeeded in hitting him if she really wanted to.
"I have to do the spell." Kate said, quietly.
Dean grimaced. "We have talked about that."
Kate wiggled free of Sam's arms and glared at Dean. "I have to."
Dean sighed. "Kate, it isn't safe."
"I don't care."
"We do."
Kate mumbled something under her breath.
"What was that?" Dean asked, narrowing his eyes.
Kate growled. "I said I should have never told you the god damn plan."
Sam cringed.
Dean sat down and pulled her to stand in front of him. "You can be angry and upset. Hell, I would be too. You are scared. If you need to blow off steam, we can go throw knives, shoot, hell I'll even let you punch me if it makes you feel better. You are NOT going to be spiteful though. We have to work together and we can't do that if you get mad and shut down."
Kate hung her head. "I'm sorry."
"No more swearing at me." Dean said, kissing her forehead.
"What if it would make me feel better?" Kate asked with a smile.
"Too bad, kid." Dean said lightly and squeezed her. "Do you want to take a break from this and go blow off some steam?"
Kate groaned. "Do I have to?"
Dean grinned. "I can offer an attitude adjustment if you would prefer that."
Kate huffed. "You are mean."
"And you are a brat." He turned her toward Sam. "You can even punch Sam."
"Hey!" Sam exclaimed.
Kate giggled. "Sam is too nice."
Dean snorted. "Go get your shoes on."
Kate rolled her eyes dramatically. "Fiiiiiine."
"Can I punch you?" Sam asked Dean, sarcastically.
Dean chuckled. "Sure, and I'll knock you on your ass."
"I don't know man, that sounds like a challenge." Sam said.
"Bring it." Dean said, smacking the back of Sam's head as he ran down the hallway.
John stepped back as the boys busted through the front door. He stopped Kate on her way out. "What is that about?"
Kate grinned happily. "I said damn and Dean is going to let me punch him."
"Wh-" John started to ask but shook his head and went inside.
Bobby came up from the basement.
John grabbed a beer from the fridge and handed one to Bobby. His eyebrows were furrowed but he almost looked amused.
"Something on your mind, John?" Bobby asked.
John smirked and tilted his head toward the door.
Bobby followed him out onto the porch and sat down. "Ah, why are they trying to kill each other this time?"
John shrugged. "Kate said she said damn and now Dean is going to let her punch him. I'm intrigued."
Bobby chuckled. "Idjits."
Sam held Dean's arms back. "Kate, now."
Kate giggled but tried to punch Dean's stomach. It felt like hitting concrete. "Ow! That isn't fair."
Dean bent forward and flipped Sam over his back. "I said you could punch me, I didn't say I wasn't going to tense up."
"It hurts when you do that, though." Kate stomped her foot.
Dean flicked her ear. "Too bad."
Sam tackled Dean to the ground in good fun.
John nudged Bobby and nodded toward where Kate was walking.
Bobby smirked.
Sam took off running but Dean stopped midstride when water hit him in the face.
Kate giggled.
Dean tried to grab her but couldn't due to the water in his face. He stepped back and coughed. "I didn't say you could spray me!"
Kate bounced on her toes. "It makes me feel better though!"
He lunged toward her, causing her to turn away from him to protect herself.
Sam yelled. "Oh crap."
Dean turned around. "Oh crap."
Kate regained her footing and realized that she had sprayed John. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry."
John set his beer down and walked off the porch. He gave her a crooked grin and held his hand out for the water hose.
She gave it to him. "I'm sorry."
He shook his head. "Run."
Kate's eyes got big and she screamed excitedly. "Dean! Help!"
Dean grabbed her and held her in front of him. "Dad, spray her."
Brian walked outside when he heard the screaming.
Bobby motioned for him to sit down.
"How did he get roped into that?" Brian asked.
Bobby laughed. "She sprayed him."
Brian shook his head. "Crazy kid."
Dean let go of Kate and laughed. "You look like a drowned rat."
Kate brushed the wet curls from her eyes and punched him in the stomach.
He doubled over. "Hey!"
Kate grinned. "I feel SO much better."
Dean took off after her but got sidelined by Sam. "Stop teaming up on me!"
John got Dean in the face with the water hose.
"Dad! Seriously, you too?"
John laughed. "Consider it training, son." He turned off the water and went back to the porch.
Bobby smirked. "Looks like the kids weren't the only ones enjoying themselves."
John smiled and took a drink of his beer. It had been a long time since he had done anything like that and he had to admit it was a little fun.
"Are we going to call them off before they kill him?" Brian asked.
John sat back. "Nah, he loves it."
"Do we know what sparked this?" Brian asked again.
"I don't know, she said damn and Dean said she could punch him." John repeated what she had told him.
Brian rocked in his chair. "That sounds like an interesting story."
Kate sprinted up on the porch, away from Dean. She laid down on the porch swing and caught her breath.
Brian reached over and patted her shoulder.
She sat up. "Oh, hid dad!"
He chuckled. "So, you said damn?"
Kate smiled sheepishly. "Well, uh. Yes, sir."
"And how did that turn into getting to punch Dean in the stomach?"
Kate smiled a little brighter. "I was frustrated and he was cheering me up."
"And punching him cheers you up?" Brian asked with a chuckle.
"Yep!" She jumped up and ran back out to the yard.
"Huh, guess that explains that." Bobby said.
Brian rubbed his head. "I guess it does."
Dean caught Kate and spun her around until she got dizzy. He caught her under her knees. "Your lips are blue, you need to warm up."
Kate tried to wiggle out of his grasp but she had to admit she was freezing.
Dean carried her up the steps and dumped her on the rug.
"Hey, you didn't have to drop me."
Dean grinned. "You didn't have to sucker punch me."
Kate stuck her tongue out at him and ran in the house. She turned on the warm water and took a long bath. She did feel better.
Dean held his side and sat down on the swing beside Sam. "What?" He asked, seeing the others looking at him.
John smirked.
Dean rolled his eyes. "She was upset, I was distracting her."
"You know, Dean, she swears you are a teddy bear and Sam swears you aren't. I think I am seeing her side of things." John teased.
Dean scoffed. "And you, old man, are becoming a push over."
Bobby chuckled. Dean had a point.
Kate felt the blood returning to her fingers and toes as the water warmed her body. She laid her head back and relaxed, letting herself melt. She could hear voices from the front porch and the low hum of conversation. She felt herself drifting off to sleep. She felt the warm pulse of the crystal against her chest. She opened her eyes and saw the blue light ebb and flow. She held the crystal in her hand and studied the light. She felt a sudden rush flow through her body and heard a soft voice humming the song that her mother used to sing. She smiled contently. Somehow, someday, things were going to be just fine.
