Okay, so this chapter I got lazy. I just wanted to put something out there.
Needless to say, Nala had not left Jem's side. She wanted to spend as much time with her new dad as possible. Jem didn't mind. There was only one concern he had right now. And that was how adoption would work? Not to mention all the issues with Nala being a faunus on Earth, and how they were going to fake documents for her. Basically he was concerned over the shit he didn't think about when he agreed to be her dad. But at the moment he was so happy he didn't think about that. But they'll cross that bridge when they get to it. Winter was sitting on the log right next to him on his other side. She didn't want to interrupt the tender moment between the new father/daughter duo. It was just too adorable. The ones who seemed the happiest right now were Blake and Marrow. While a human adopting a faunus on Remnant did happen from time to time, to see it in person was something that made both happy. It showed progress between humans and faunus.
Plus, those were were already alike in a lot of ways.
Case in point, watching the two of them eat bacon, sausage and pancakes that he had cooked up over the fire would make one think they were biologically related.
"Oh Clover, before we leave Arizona we're going to buy a few more lotto scratchers." Clover groaned at that.
"Come on! You already got enough money, how much more do you want?" He said as everyone chuckled.
"Money is a means to an end, I'm not doing this for the money, I'm doing this so I'll never have to worry about money, besides, I'm not going nuts with my winnings like most people." Jem thought back to all those articles he read about lottery winners.
A lot would go bankrupt because they wanted to afford a fancy life of luxury, but bought everything they wanted before they paid the taxes on it. And then they had such an expensive lifestyle that they couldn't afford the upkeep and had to file for bankruptcy. Jem however was just trying to get enough so he could afford to travel a bit more, and have a nice homestead in Alaska. If he could afford that he would be happy. Besides it wasn't like he was going to quit his job, he was still going to work until he could get a pension.
Besides, he figured if he didn't have a job he would go insane from not having anything to do all day.
"I still feel dirty." Clover grumbled.
"Hey, its not like I'm making you get in a banana hammock and go on a stage." Jem pointed out as Clover still didn't like the blatant abuse of his semblance.
"Don't you think it would make sense to just enter into a mega millions or something like that? Then you wouldn't have to keep using me for those tiny 10,000 scratchers."
"Heelll no, I don't want to imagine the pain in the ass it would be to deal with the lotto office then." That and he was having too much fun using Clover's semblance for this.
"You know, sometimes I wish you had a good fortune semblance just so I wouldn't have to be used like this." Clover said as Jem chuckled.
"So do I, but the odds of that happening are slim and none." Jem remembered how they had unlocked his aura.
He was happy as hell because he thought he would instantly become the strongest man in the world. However, when they had unlocked it, the levels had been minimum, Winter assumed it was due to him growing up on Earth, so even though all living organisms had Aura, it was so diluted in his world that it wouldn't make much of a difference. They tested it, and while he did become stronger, faster, and his recovery time from injuries did get a slight boost. It was nothing remarkable. On top of that, the idea of him having good luck as a semblance was slim and none.
He had been more fortunate lately, but he just assumed that was just the universe throwing him a bone with Clover.
"I still don't feel good about this." Clover was starting to wonder if this was how it felt to be a prostitute
"Tell you what, don't think of it as making money for me, think of it as you're helping put Nala through school." Jem said as Nala beamed at that.
"Oh you evil dick." That was one way to get away with evil.
If you ever wanted to do something to screw people over, just say 'you care about the children'. Because then no matter what you do to fuck everyone over, nobody will dare question you. Because if you went against the crowd and said 'Hey this guy is an asshole' everyone will turn on you saying you 'must hate kids'. It was the perfect defense.
"If it makes you feel any better, think of this as funding your vacations while you're here on Earth." Jem said as Clover couldn't argue with that.
"Fine." Suddenly they heard a phone go off.
It was Jem's phone. He pulled it out and checked it out.
His face looked surprised and then confused.
"I got fired?" He said as he read the text.
"What?!" Winter said as she read the text.
"Apparently my job is laying people off..." He said as he read through the text.
"Ouch that sucks." Clover said as Jem thought it over.
"Hang on." He said as he opened up a new file on his phone.
It was labeled "OPEN IF FIRED"
Jem opened it, and immediately they were greeted with Chris Tuckers face and voice.
"YOU GOT TO BE A STUPID MOTHERFUCKER TO GET FIRED ON YOUR DAY OFF." His voice yelled at Jem as he chuckled at it.
"...Why did you have that saved on your phone?" Winter asked as it seemed random.
"I figured it would help me deal with the disappointment." Jem said as he laid back down.
"You don't seem disappointed."
"Eh, not really, I have plenty of money from using Clover's semblance. And I can always find a new job. It's not the end of the world, besides that job was boring anyways." Suddenly he got another text.
"YOU GOT TO BE FUCKING KIDDING ME?!" Now THAT got everyones attention.
"What?!" Nala said as she was worried about her dad.
"...Not even two minutes from when I got fired, and the army recruiters are texting me asking if I want to reenlist." Jem couldn't believe how fast they were.
He remembered how the reserve recruiters were constantly trying to butter him up when he was on terminal leave, but holy fucking shit, these new batch of recruiters must be psychic, because they sensed a disturbance in the force and they capitalized on it within seconds. If he didn't know any better he would have guessed they were in cahoots with his old job to try and force him to reenlist.
Then again, there was that voice in the back of his head thinking 'Retiring in 20 years would be nice'
Then he remembered the time a private from New York City was keeping a homeless woman as a pet in his closet. (1)
And then all of a sudden, reenlisting didn't sound so fun.
But then again, he did often find himself wondering what it would be like if he became an NCO rather than stick with the E4 Mafia.
And here we go again, he was facing the problem all junior enlisted soldiers faced when they got out. They spent so much time hating the bullshit that happened in the army that they never once considered how much they would miss it when they get out. But then he remembered that he probably would have never have met any of the RWBY crew if he had stayed in.
He never would have bought the motorhome that Winter would have crashed into. Who knows how things would have turned out?
That being said
"I'll just start looking for a new job when I get back." He said as laid back and relaxed.
"I thought you were still going to try to be a police officer?" Elm said as she remembered him talking about it.
"Not in Illinois, a lot of them won't take me due to my tattoos." Surprisingly a lot of them didn't like the fact he had tattoos going past the elbows.
"So what do we do until then?" Harriet asked as Jem looked at Clover.
"Simple, we keep cashing in on Clovers good luck."
"OH COME ON!"
(1) This was actually at a buddys barracks, there was a soldier there who was having his homeless girlfriend live in his little storage closet, she had been there for about three months before she was found during a company wide inspection. Now he faced disciplinary action, and his girlfriend wasn't charged with trespassing because the leadership took sympathy on her because she was homeless.
Now, that guy is still in the army, married his homeless girlfriend, and they are currently stationed in South Korea.
The weirdest thing is, he literally found this girl on the streets of Nashville, and somehow managed to sneak her on base without anyone knowing. Thats impressive.
And the fucked up thing is the relationship WORKS.
