Kate looks at the small fingers, gently touching them, caressing them. She looks at the clothes her husband had brought them on the way to the hospital. The fingers are even tinier than their sister's. Probably because the twins came a few weeks too early. She'd forgotten how tiny and perfect the small fingers were on her daughter's hands when she was born, and now looking at both her sons' hands and fingers… let's just say the memories are coming right back to her. The perfect nails on the teeny tiny fingers. A part of her can't believe the two came out of her hours ago. She's already figured out that feeding her sons would be a challenge until she's gotten a rhythm. She's going to have to find a schedule on how to make sure they both get as much milk as the other one and also try to find out a way to give them milk almost at the same time without actually giving them at the same time. It wasn't like she could have them at one breast each, at least not for very long. They would get bigger soon and when they were bigger they wouldn't fit feeding at the same time.
"Mommy!"
Kate turns at the sound of her daughter coming into the hospital room and she smiles at the girl's excitement.
"Hey baby," she says and turns in the big bed she's sitting in, once again wondering how her husband managed to weasel her into the room he had. She taps the empty space right beside her and it doesn't take long before Lily jumps up onto the bed and Kate doesn't hesitate to throw her arms around her girl to pull her into a hug. She hasn't seen her daughter since last night when they'd driven into the hospital.
"Mo-om!" Lily exclaims. "Can't breathe."
Kate chuckles as she releases her grip on the girl but kisses the top of her brown hair.
"Oh wow," Lily gasps when her eyes fall on her baby brothers. "They're tiny."
Kate bites her lip as she chuckles a bit more. "Yeah, they didn't have that much space in my belly as they would have if they were only one."
Lily reaches out and Kate smiles as her daughter carefully touches the teeny, tiny fingers in the same way she did only moments ago.
"What are their names?" Lily asks and Kate looks up to look around the room, she wrinkles her forehead.
"Where's your dad?" she asks, suddenly noticing he didn't come in together with their daughter.
"He's just getting surprises," Lily says as if it's the most natural thing ever. Well, with him it kinda is. "You decided names?"
"I don't know peanut, your dad and I haven't completely decided," Kate says and Lily nods.
"I like Reece," the girl says and Kate looks at her with wide eyes. "Oh, and Jake."
"How did…"
"I heard you talking about those yesterday," Lily explains and Kate shakes her head with a smile on her face. Of course she'd heard them discussing baby names while making breakfast yesterday morning.
Kate reaches out to the baby closest to her daughter and picks him up as carefully as she can. "Do you wanna hold your brother?" she asks and Lily immediately nods with a bright smile shining on her face.
Kate puts her son into her daughter's arms and only lets go of the boy when she feels Lily has him. She then goes to pick up the next twin to put him carefully into her own arms.
"Hey ladies."
Kate looks up at her husband walking into the room with a bright smile on his face and two brown bags in one hand and a cup holder with three milkshakes in it.
"You brought Remy's," she says and feels her whole body shine up with the joy of getting some real food into her.
"I did," he says as he puts it down on the table that had three chairs around it. "You hungry?"
"Yes," Kate immediately says and Rick comes up to her in order to accept their son from her arms.
Kate stands up and steps to her toes to kiss his lips. "Thank you," she whispers and he kisses her one more time.
"Always."
After getting both boys into their hospital cribs the three sit down and start eating. They eat in silence for a while, Kate having swallowed her whole hamburger before she opens her mouth to start a conversation.
"Lily thinks we should name them Jake and Reece," she suggests and Rick looks at her.
"Yeah, I like them," Lily immediately agrees and Kate chuckles.
Rick looks between the two and then smiles. "Then Jake and Reece it is, who's who though?"
Kate starts to laugh. "I don't know, that much we haven't figured out yet."
"Well, time will tell then," Rick chuckles and Kate nods.
Kate looks over to their boys, their twin boys. Gosh, she can't wait to get to know them.
The end
