"Maybe you should get some rest, dear," Madam Pomfrey said to Jade. "He'll be alright."
But Jade didn't move, she didn't even reply to the older woman. She hadn't stopped crying and she was still shaking. Maybe her state was what made Madam Pomfrey let Jade stay. She was a very stern woman but she noticed Jade wasn't okay to leave.
"Well, at least put this on."
Madam Pomfrey gave Jade some clothes that she had in her office. Her own clothes were still soaking wet and stained with blood. She took them and walked to the bathroom.
Jade winced as she looked in the mirror at her white shirt that now wasn't so white. She took it off quickly and threw it down to the floor. Staying in just her bra, Jade quickly cleaned herself in the bathroom of the Hospital Wing. The clear water kept coming back red. She felt sick at the sight but she kept rubbing her skin and getting rid of any trace of blood.
Once she seemed and felt clean enough, she dried herself and put on the clean, blood-free clothes that Madam Pomfrey had given her. Those were bigger but she preferred them as they were not stained and they were dry. She left her clothes in the corner and cleaned the sink before going out of the bathroom.
But despite being in dry clothes, Jade kept shaking. She was still in shock. Around 2:00, Jade dragged her chair closer to the top of the bed and put a hand on top of Draco's, who was still unconscious. His skin was so pale, she didn't want to say it or think about it but he seemed dead.
Not wating to cause any more damage, Jade laid her head on the edge of the bed, trying not to touch him. From time to time, she kept breaking down as she remembered the amount of blood Draco lost.
Jade tried hard to read his mind... to see if he was still there, and not gone. But all she got was listening to Madam Pomfrey, she still couldn't listen to Draco's thoughts.
Just before sunrise, tiredness got the best of Jade. She closed her eyes for just a few seconds but she fell asleep, with her face still wet from tears and her hand on top of Draco's.
Jade didn't move at all from her seat next to the bed. Snape went to check on him a few times and told Jade to go eat but she wasn't hungry. Narcissa Malfoy visited him too, she sat next to Jade for a couple of hours before she had to leave.
Before night came, Snape asked her what had happened and Jade tried to speak. Her voice hoarse from not using it in a whole day but she couldn't even complete a sentence without crying. So Snape didn't ask more and told her to get some rest, he let her sleep on the bed next to Draco. Madam Pomfrey wasn't happy but she didn't argue with Snape, she even gave something to Jade to make her calm down a bit.
The next day after breakfast Madam Pomfrey actually kicked her out. Snape had ordered her to leave and to actually go to class.
Feeling like a zombie, Jade went all the way to the dungeons and got into her dorm. She took a long and hot shower and she felt slightly better. She changed into her uniform and just stayed there for a bit.
She didn't know what day it was or the time... did she have Care of Magical Creatures or Charms? Or even Potions? Or DADA?
Nevertheless, she walked out to the Entrance Hall. She stood there for a while not knowing where to go or what to do.
"Miss Lias?" She turned to look at Madam Hooch. "What are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be in class?"
"I don't know what class I have," Jade whispered, her voice hoarser than ever.
"Should I take you to Professor Snape?" Jade shook her head.
"What day is it? What time?" Jade felt weird asking that.
"Lunch is in about half an hour so you should probably just stay here. Come on, I'll keep you company and we can talk."
Madam Hooch told her that she was very impressed with the way she played, that she had broken another record. Being the only chaser that scored for her team in a match. She did score the twenty-two goals but she didn't register she was breaking a record.
She also told her that maybe over the holidays or at the start of the year she could introduce Jade to some important sport people that could help her get into teams and sponsor her.
Jade thanked her and normally that would have made her ecstatic but Madam Hooch could sense how down and withdrawn she was. She heard of what happened to Draco and knew how close they were, being in the same year and being teammates for three years.
"I'll send you a letter with the details," she told Jade as students started to walk into the Great Hall.
"Thanks," she said forcing a smile.
Before Jade could be joined by her Slytherin friends, she saw a brunet boy walking towards her. She actually tried to stand up and run away but he was there too quickly. So she sat down again and pretended to be busy and entertained with her plate and silvery.
"Jade... I didn't mean to. I'm so sorry. How is he? I honestly didn't know that was going to happen, I swear!"
Jade didn't say anything or even looked at him. She stayed in her place like a statue, not moving a single muscle.
Harry had had a horrible time. Snape, McGonagall, Ron, Granger, the Quidditch team, every single Slytherin, Myrtle and others. Granger was the most annoying and even a bit unfair, or Harry thought so, telling him how she always knew there was something dodgy about the book. But the most hurtful and worst reaction was from Jade.
He honestly expected being yelled at, even being punched, kicked... or being hexed. He saw the way Jade reacted when she saw Draco on the floor so he obviously knew she was beyond furious and Harry understood that. But what he didn't expect was avoidance and silence.
"I regret it so much, I wish I hadn't done it. I truly do."
As Harry was on his feet and Jade was sitting, and her head was slightly facing down, Harry couldn't see the tears filling her green eyes or how she was biting her lip to stop herself from crying.
Yes, she wanted to kill him. She wanted to hex him so bad. She wanted to use the same spell he used on Draco but at the moment she was so numb and still in shock and even scared of losing Draco that she didn't have the strength to even face him.
"I got detention every Saturday with Snape, and I know I deserve it. I do hope Malfoy is alright, like I said, I wish I hadn't done it."
But Jade didn't look at him, not even once, not even to glare at him. Harry tried to keep apologizing but it was then when the other Slytherins came.
"I think she doesn't want you here, Potter!" Blaise said with hatred in his tone. "Go away!"
Harry didn't wait to be told twice. He had enough detention and he didn't want to end up in a fight with Blaise, Crabbe and Goyle.
Draco opened his eyes on the fourth day, it was just after 16:00 and Jade was there, holding his hand. Jade jumped from her seat and smiled at him.
"Jade..." he whispered.
Jade couldn't stop herself, she kissed him hard on his dry lips and when she pulled away she had happy tears in her eyes then she quickly went to get Madam Pomfrey.
Draco had to stay more days in the Hospital Wing as he wasn't okay yet. But he had woken up and Jade couldn't be happier. Now, it was harder to get her out of there as she wanted to be with Draco all the time and check if he was okay.
It had been about two weeks since Malfoy woke up, he was still being taken care of by Madam Pomfrey but he seemed alright. Sometimes he got very dizzy and was weak because of all the blood he lost.
Harry had noticed that during that time, despite having to attend classes, Jade skipped a lot. Never DADA, and usually potions, but she always skipped the others. Harry found it curious as she wasn't allowed in the Hospital Wing during classes, so, where was she?
And during those two weeks, Jade hadn't talked to him, not said a single word, not even to be mean. To be honest, she hadn't even looked at him once.
She had very short and meaningless talks with Ron but if Harry was around she would quickly walk away. Ron thought it was better to be avoided than being victim of Jade's wrath. Harry disagreed as it hurt to be like this with Jade.
Sometimes Harry wished Jade could just look at him and do something, to get all her anger out. He couldn't take this silence and coldness anymore. He just wanted something to happen but Harry kept getting nothing from her, not even a glare.
It was funny... Years ago when Jade was mean and cruel he wished she could just ignore them and stop that treatment and now that she was finally ignoring him as if he was completely invisible, Harry wanted something... anything from her.
The only day that Jade was allowed to be all day with Draco was for his birthday on June 5th. She decided to ask Dumbledore himself instead of Snape. He granted it to her and they even had a short chat about the prophecy, in case Jade had more questions.
"You don't have to worry, Professor," Jade told him. "After this, there is no chance I can ever have feelings for Potter... at least not good ones. So the prophecy won't come true. Oh, and I really don't want to talk to him so I think you should tell him about it. I'm never speaking to him again."
"I wouldn't say never, Miss Lias. Harry made a really big mistake but I'm sure it was an accident," Dumbledore told her and Jade felt angry. What happened couldn't be just a big unfortunate mistake. It wasn't like Harry just broke a chair or something like that. "You can be angry but don't let that eat you up inside. Eventually, you'll have to let that go."
"He almost killed Draco!" Jade exclaimed loudly.
"He didn't and he didn't mean to. Now, go and spend time with Mr. Malfoy, I'm sure he is waiting for you."
Jade nodded and thanked him again. She stood up and hurried down to the Hospital Wing. She opened the door and smiled as Draco spotted her.
"I couldn't buy you a gift," Jade said sadly as she sat in front of his bed. "But I'll get you one soon."
"There's only one thing that I want," Draco said. He was sitting up and eating a piece of chocolate cake.
"What?"
"A kiss." Jade blushed.
"You've got chocolate all over your lips!"
"So? Even better, isn't it?" Draco grinned, he seemed to be better and better everyday.
Jade pretended she didn't want to kiss him but then she stood up, approached him, kissed his cheek first to tease him and then his other cheek and then finally, his lips. Draco put his hand on her cheek and kissed her passionately. He smiled through the kiss.
Jade broke the kiss and looked into Draco's grey eyes that seemed more alive than ever. She smiled at him.
"I love you," Jade said without hesitation. Draco was a bit taken aback, as he was always the one who said it first, most of the time without a reply. But he knew Jade so it didn't bother him when she didn't say it back to him. He knew she needed time and he was happy to give it to her.
Draco looked like he was going to cry for a second. He looked down at his half-eaten cake and then back at Jade. Her eyes were completely green now with that blue tiny dot. He smiled, still teary eyes and kissed her again.
"Why do you think Jade is not going to classes?" Harry asked Ron. They had just finished Transfiguration and Jade hadn't been there, or in charms earlier.
"This is my guess... I think that she was traumatized. So she can't really deal with classes at the moment and perhaps that horrible event made her problem even worse... you know, listening to thoughts so she is avoiding people," Ron said. "Another possibility is that she is avoiding you because she doesn't want to kill you but she would if she sees you."
"Thanks, Ron."
"You asked. And it's just a guess. She almost lost her best friend... and she saw how he almost bled to death. I think that can create serious psychological issues. I think that's why she hasn't gotten into trouble yet or the fact her mind problem is indeed bad and out of control and Snape knows about it so he isn't forcing her to be surrounded by people and going mad."
After dinner, Harry hesitated but eventually checked the Marauders Map and looked for Jade. He felt really weird and awkward, as if he was doing something he shouldn't. He blushed just thinking about what he was doing. He saw she was in the Hospital Wing next to Malfoy. Then he saw how fifteen minutes later she walked to the Slytherin Common Room and spent some time with Crabbe and Goyle, then she stayed in the common room on her own.
Harry tried some times to approach Jade but she would be gone before he could actually say something. For potions, if she attented, she wouldn't sit next to Harry and Ron anymore, but with the Slytherins. For the DADA, the only class she never missed, probably because Snape was the one teaching it, she sat with one of the twins or Blaise Zabini.
"You almost killed him, but she will eventually understand it was an accident," Ron told him one day.
"She thinks I did it because of my obsession," Harry told him.
"How do you know? Has she told you that?"
"No. She hasn't even looked at me for weeks," Harry said.
Finally, ten days after his birthday, Malfoy was released from the Hospital Wing. Even after what happened to him, he looked less ill than before the incident and like he gained about ten pounds, his face was a bit fuller and had some colour. Jade on the other hand, looked as ill as ever.
It was hard to see Jade hanging out with Malfoy all the time. It was when he got out of the Hospital when she started attending classes more often but sometimes she still missed them and Malfoy didn't.
It was close to the end of the month when Harry was walking to the Gryffindor Common Room on his own and heard a very familiar female voice.
He got closer and saw the brunette arguing with Malfoy. He looked livid but scared at the same time and she was crying. Harry felt like defending Jade because it must be really bad if she was crying but he decided to wait and listen what was going on, and he didn't want things to end like last time.
"Why did you do it, Jade?" Malfoy screamed.
"I had to," Jade mumbled, wiping some tears with her sleeve.
"How did you even know? Don't you see what this could mean? I told you not to!" he shouted, he was shaking his head in disbelief.
"No one will know! We will tell no one."
"They could easily find out, Jade."
"If I could go back in time, I'd do it again. At least you won't be killed," Jade exclaimed, finally raising her voice. "That's all I care about."
"Maybe... but something worse than that could happen. You took an unnecessary risk!"
"I disagree. I did it and I don't regret it if it means that I saved your life... now just use this spell that I wrote down," Jade said with a serene voice once again, giving Draco a piece of paper. "That's all you have to do."
"Thanks," Draco whispered. "But Jade, please, don't do anything else. Do it for me if you don't care about your life. Just stay away."
Jade said nothing else, she stared at Draco for a bit and then walked away. Harry had to hide quickly so Jade wouldn't find him eavesdropping on them.
It was late, Jade was restless. She couldn't fall asleep. She went down to the common room where she found Draco, who looked paler than normal. He was fully dressed in day clothes despite the time and he had his wand in his hand, Jade immediately knew something wasn't right.
"Draco?"
Draco looked guilty and regretful. He turned to face her and with long steps approached her. He stopped in front of her and hugged her. Then, after loosing his grip, he looked into her brown greenish eyes and smiled, as he tucked a strand of wavy brown hair behind her ear.
It didn't take much to notice how worried and distressed Jade looked. It was written all over her face. Draco leaned in and kissed her soft lips. He put his hands on either side of her face and deepened the kiss.
He didn't know if that was the last time he was going to be able to do that. He didn't want to let go but he knew he had to, so he tried to memorize how it felt, every little detail, how her skin felt on his fingers or her lips on his... the smell of her hair, the way her eyes looked and how happy she made him feel.
"Don't leave this room, Jade, do you understand me?" Draco exclaimed as he pulled away.
"Draco..."
"I don't want you out there!"
"But..."
"Jade! Stay here!"
Draco didn't want to keep arguing with Jade and wasting time, and he didn't want their possibly last time together to be spent arguing, so he actually had to hex her. He dragged her unconscious body to the sofa of the common room and put an enchantment around it so she couldn't leave, it was good Jade didn't have her wand with her, otherwise Draco knew Jade would have fought back.
