Hello everyone, it's a new week, so that means another new chapter of the story! My story has crossed more than 400K Words, and at this rate where I am writing lengthy ones – 500K doesn't seem a far target. This one is not that important – and split into different parts – Christmas Special, mandatory Advanceshipping moments, a little something about Ash and Lucario and return of a recurring character. I shall try to keep things separate by splitting into two chapters, whichever story or combination reaches 10K words first.
Ok so here, Ash and Gang are gonna split. Because its time for Christmas, according to the timeline of the plot. Now can't wait till December of this year to upload this, can I? Always a dream to write a Christmas Special with just Ash and May as a unmarried, couple. So I am gonna try it out this time. Will try to make it more of a holiday special. Don't know how Thanksgiving Chapter was, because it was my first publishing of a holiday theme. Confident that I will do better this time.
So Misty's gonna be in Cerulean City celebrating Christmas with Tracey, Brock in Pewter City with his family. Wish I could introduce Holly here, but I won't. Some Other time. Olivia was the later choice after Lucy, Suzy and Holly but she's still older than him. And then, Ash and May are heading back towards Pallet Town, where not just Delia but also a special character awaits them.
So it's gonna be a journey from Porta Vista to Cerulean to Pewter to Pallet Town. Remember in those old days, how it would take them day to travel cities and now, just two Pokémon (Pikachu and Mimey) can cover the distance from Vermillion to Pallet in a single day. Funny right but worth pondering.
Who will it be? Will only disclose in this chapter and you'll find out once you start perusing. But I can at least spoil that Ash and that person will have a battle and I am gonna use some of his Unova Team here.
So do read with due interest.
Evening 5 pm, two days from Christmas. Location: Cerulean City
They were finally returning home, songs and carols of Christmas booming into the walls of the RV bus, that had just took another turn of the decorated streets of Cerulean. Christmas is coming. The gift humans received – the moments they acknowledge their deep love for another of their kind, and let the bond shine bright. The time when loving bonds suddenly become a man's biggest prosperity. The night when warm drinks, warm laughter, warm banter are recognized and valued. Above all it is a night to dwell on what love is and how we can better learn to follow the example of Christ and not fall to the ways of greed.
Ash looked out of the window, smiling at a husband-wife duo, exiting a Toy store. Some kid is gonna be really happy. He sighed. Christmas holidays are a time of love, and so for some that makes them so very challenging, like himself. His Christmas would often seem like working late at the office, and ignoring Clemont's pleas to go home or at least join him. Yet we can gather our strength to start anew, to treat the season as a blank page we can write whatever new "traditions" bring us real joy. This year was gonna be different, this Christmas, he was gonna be with family, and a bud in his heart, requested him to continue that way. While still driving through the colorful lanes of Cerulean, he sight a blonde adorned in her winter woolen attire, sipping some beverages, chatting up with her friends.
Serena…
Ash was reminded of her. How loving and strict she was when he would mess up the Christmas tree. His Christmas routine had vanished after she left. She cherished everything he did wrong on the festival and chide him for it. Most of his Christmas was quarantined in his room, watching some old flick, a hot dinner in front of him and bowl full of eggnog. He would gift massive perquisites, fat bonuses and grant leaves to his employees, but what would he get in return? Some dumb watches, and mobile covers as Christmas gifts. This time, all the bling can do is mask problems he'd be better off fixing at home. So, avoid flight-shame and those polluting car-trips, and instead spark joy in the place that you live.
This Christmas holiday he was gonna be at home and hearth, together in his village, together in his community with May, his second chance in his life to reclaim his happiness. There was something special about being home in the holidays, of seeing the extraordinary in the ordinary. Guess they have this special time to slow down and savour having both feet in the present moment and place, cherishing each other. His eyes glanced at a jewellery store, and ideas flooded in his head. Nah…that would be too soon.
The Christmas spirit is the embodiment of this altruistic love, free of monetary concerns, yet it should be the spirit of every day, just a normal love that does what real grown-ups should do.
Misty's residence, adjacent to Cerulean City Gym was only 2 miles away. They could even see the large building in sight.
The streets were bustling with people who were out for a trade. Buyers and sellers in quite a cordial manner, restrained their veins during negotiations. Pretty collage going teens were out jingling their bells, in search of courteous people to talk them into a donation for non-profitable trusts. Best attractions were transformed into festive winter extravaganzas, proving that Kanto is no less than Sinnoh and Unova when it comes to ornamenting a region when it comes to Christmas designs and architecture. Even corrupt politicians enter the fray when rivaled with other regions. There are a lot of incredible things to do all season long, which only reinstates how the region that never sleeps certainly doesn't hibernate during the colder months.
Each city celebrated Christmas with their own traditions. Cerulean was brought to life each evening, hundreds of thousands of fairy lights sparkling from the avenue's trees. This famed stretch also hosted many Christmas markets featuring artisans, food and holiday themed vendors to pursue. Elaborate winter displays were another reason for more people to get out of their homes who were attracted to sales. Businesses adorn their exteriors in holiday décor to battle it out for title of Best Dressed Building. Open-top buses that travel along Orchard offer some of the best views of the holiday displays. Rinks for ice-skating were open once again, the courtesy of various ice type Pokémon.
The tires screeched, as the van finally pulled at the destination. The doors slid, as the mikan haired Gym Leader exited with her luggage, and some of the gifts she had bought home, with Brock's help. May alighted down to, and lastly, Ash took a deserved break from all the driving from Porta Vista. The gym attendants proved themselves helpful, with all the luggage and extra souvenirs, making Misty unburden from the load.
Sighing, Ash cursed as he alighted looking up that ridiculously decorated lights – a total haywire on the Dewgong's sculpture atop the Gym. Guess, Misty's sisters were in town. "Oh Santa, you gonna be damned…''
Winging his hands, he joined up to May and Brock, gruntled to find Misty cuddling Pikachu.
''So I get this is it, for the time being huh, Mist?'' Ash surprised May, by sliding a hand across her. ''We directly see you on Wednesday then?''
''Yup,'' Misty cooed, lifting her face away from Pikachu. ''Me and Tracey will already be at the Indigo Plateau before you know it! (winks) I even made him book the seats…''
''Hey, I was gonna arrange seats!'' Ash argued.
"Sorry pal, you spent enough on this trip already,'' Misty chuckled.
"Alright,'' Ash conceded. "Thanks for the sneakers you got me. They were awesome. Gonna have those on in my battle against Lance.''
"And t hank you so much for the perfumes,'' Misty grinned. ''How did you know those were my favorite?''
"I don't know, May suggested.'' He kissed atop May's temple.
''Yeah, because I don't think Misty ever wanted a Laptop for Christmas." May drawled, eliciting a laughter.
''Huh?'' Ash playfully wondered. ''You know stuff I don't. Guess, I'll keep you around…''
May punched him lightly.
"Hey Brock,'' Misty hugged him tightly. ''It's gonna be sad I ain't gonna taste any of your cooking this Christmas.''
''But I have taught you enough, didn't I?'' he patted her on the back. Pikachu squirreled out, saved from being squished.
''Oh yeah…but don't let Tracey get a wind of it.''
She hugged May one last time, Ash a bit skeptical, as both girls whispered something to each other. Presumably something dirty that involved him. Gad that they weren't starting another lengthy conversations. He had decided, that if ever had two choices: listen to the girls talk or lake full of Gyarados, he would choose an easier death by swimming into a Gyarados. Finally it was his turn, he returned her embrace and they stood holding each other a little longer.
"I had a wonderful time this entire month, Ash. Thank You,'' she kissed his cheek. ''And congratulations once again. You have earned it.''
"I am just glad you were able to come and watch me, Mist. It means a lot to me.'' He replied with a big grin. They pulled apart, and Misty implored May.
''Keep an eye on this knucklehead, will you, May? Winning all the marbles might end up going to his head."
"Hey! What's that supposed to mean?" Ash complained.
May giggled, "I don't think you'll have to worry about that, Misty."
Smiling she turned at Ash once again, whispering in his ears. ''She's a keeper. Don't let her go.''
From the corner of her eye, she saw the gym attendants emerging as a sign that her stuff had reached her room. She drifted apart from them, now heading towards the gym, not willing to show her eyes were now welling. She choked and grinned. "Alright guys, Merry Christmas! See you soon!''
"MERRY CHRISTMAS, MISTY!"
Brock was dropped at Pewter City just about an hour and a half ago. May and Ash had taken a small breather just near the outskirts of Pallet Town. The countryside town was only now a few miles away and it was edging closer to past thirty minutes of eight. Ash laid down on the snow, dreaming of all those delicacies his mother would have prepared by now. Seeing him smile, May's intuition kicked in, and she knew his mind had deserted his presence wandering into all dishes of food.
She was reminded of her own home, and she wondered how preparations for Christmas were being run in her own house. Of course, her Dad would be going gonzo setting up all the lights. He laid besides him, joining him to take a mental stroll around her house. Christmas vacation was about home-cooking and living with simple expectations. Everyone wanted good food, but more than that they wanted to feel relaxed at home. So first thing they always did was clean the house together, so it wasn't just on one person to do. That was the start of feeling as if they were "team Christmas." Then talked about their favourite recipes, made a shortlist and went shopping for ingredients. Each meal cooked in teams, for the cooking and the cleaning.
He turned to look at her, disappointed he couldn't look at her jewel toned eyes, as they were shut. She seemed so…satisfied, the way he felt just looking at her. She stood out, where everything around her was just so white, and all he could do was look at her. He didn't want to look at anything else. Her breaths were so peaceful, he could just lie on her chest and hear her respiration. The winter landscape breathes deeply beneath heaven's eiderdown.
He grinned, and look above at the sky. Snow clouds, silver and black, in a multitude of precious-metal hues, adorn the sky as if they long to kiss the land. The snow-forest feels for all the world as if it is a present awaiting its opening. The mountain rises in snow-white brilliance, a silent invitation to good for the soul not to accept. Snow was falling down in the most artistic form, and the couple enjoyed it, reminiscent of their days back in Hoenn, they each cherished dearly.
He shifter his gaze to her once again. She had spread her arms, inviting the snow to fall on her body. He gently took one hand of hers in his, and kissed it. A warm feeling heated May's heart and same was being reflected in her cheeks.
"Rekindling old Christmas memories, huh?'' Ash raised himself, propping up to an elbow, and smiling down at his girlfriend.
"Yeah…" he hummed, "something's just so special about it.''
His grin widened. If some recollections brought a smile on her face, they had to be special. In his heart, he knew she was missing home. And he didn't want her to be left lonely. In fact, he wanted to have this Christmas so special for her, that she would remember it enough to tell their grandchildren. Their? Well, perhaps. It was their first Christmas together, as a couple.
''Look, I know you are missing your folks home,'' he leaned down for a quick kiss. ''But I promise you, this Christmas is just gonna give you the homey feeling that you longing now for.''
''How did you know, I am missing home?'' she ran her gloved hand past his hair.
''Call it a boyfriend's intuition.''
"I do like a boyfriend who can read my mind,'' May coyly smiled, before their lips got closer and finally touched. A kiss like that brought more warmth in their bodies, than jackets and tight woollen clothes. The snow clad forest appears to have sprung into existence solely for the couple kissing so tenderly, their faces dripping with the wintry gifts of clouds. His hands, gently in her hair, hers upon his chest. Ash smiles, and glances toward the sky that promises more snow to come, their sweet sound as a round of applause for love and romance.
Pikachu squealed from inside the van, as his little paw tapped the window. The little rodent was shivering. They pulled, apart each agreeing that it was better to rush home, and get a savory taste of the presumable hot chocolate Delia would have just lifted off the stove.
Ash pressed his feet on the gas, and finally their ride resumed. Pallet Town was now visible. If anybody was under impression that Professor Oak was only a specialist in Pokémon study, well time to reconsider, because the old cook was a master at event organizing. If someone was new to Pallet Town today, he wouldn't know the real beauty of the grasslands, and if someone was returning back to Pallet, he would definitely asked himself. "Is this really Pallet Town?''
As the van entered the lanes, countless light and decorations were indescribable. Christmas seemed like an important holiday for the residents of Pallet Town and the community went overdrive in embellishing the village. May was marveled to see the exuberantly decorated houses the affluent area had. Here the holiday spirit knew no bounds. Vintage cars lined the streets with houses and streets covered with lights. No a single lamp post was left naked. This town beat the darkness in every way.
Two giants attractions could have caught even an astronaut's eyes : the towering Christmas Tree blinking continuously and the colossal Reindeer sculpture in the Santa's Village. In addition to powdery slopes perfect for skiing and snowboarding, the Snowmassive Celebration features interactive light-based interaction, illuminated ice sculptures, and an ice-skating show. Street shops and merchants market was being winded up as it was getting late, but tomorrow there was gonna be a heavier hustle and bustle on occasion of Christmas eve.
As they reached their residency, aromas of baked goods were being wafted out in the atmosphere. At least one window seemed open for that process. While Pikachu was quite restless to squirm in the hands of Delia, both him and May were excused always for some mysterious undiscovered reason as to why pretty girls and cutesy small Pokémon must not do the heavy work: like assisting Ash with some gifts. As the van pulled into a parking lane, and the key was pulled off, the doors opened automatic, leaving Pikachu no reason to dash out towards the door. The mouse had gotten way too much agile for his age.
Lucky for him, the door was already open. May giggled, singing her way into the home. Bewildered and having his fate accepted naturally, Ash was the laggard, hand full with piles of gifts. He passed through the colorful door, adorned with red and green. Organic beauties, decorated with eucalyptus, pine, and earthy flowers came together to form a whimsical, playful wreaths decorated to the nines with tiny disco balls. Delia must have winged her creativity by keeping the ornaments (balls) polished by keeping each color in its own quadrant.
Not a second that Ash had walked into the house, he took a deep breath dumping all of the gifts next to the shoe stand. They were gonna be unwrapped two days, later so let them still be a mystery. Just as his tired eyes were about to droop, his eyes were startled. Was this really his house or did they accidently walk into someone else's?
The hallway to the living room was sparkling. The house had been transformed into a winter wonderland. Delia must have patented every Christmas décor ideas, or was she just ecstatic that her children were coming home. There was pompom garlands, generous amounts of tree ribbon and pinecones galore. Stockings hung on the staircase railing with care, ensconced in garlands of course such that every vertical bar had a foliage to dress the full length of the banister. The beautiful bouquets at the bottom ion of the stairs was adding a wow factor. Handcrafted snowflakes hung from the ceiling. Scented floral arrangements in the hallway were adding the seasonal fragrance as soon as one would step inside the house. Every object was stylishly displayed…but that would be on normal days….so what word could Ash use to describe the fashion they were in…perhaps starry, because everything in the house twinkled.
"Pika~"
House was sounding lively, as Ash scampered into the living room, to find Pikachu cuddled into Delia while she crooned him in her motherly fashion. Sigh, the matriarch would never change her ways.
The inside of the house was more of a splendor than outside. When Ash was trudging in the house, he did spot all the colorful lightings on the roof. So the question remains, who should he compliment, his mom or Mimey? Speaking of Mimey, he could hear him mum, from the kitchen, so either the help was whipping up something or just…pretending to do so.
Aside from being the best chef in all over Pallet town, she could give even famous Kalosian interior designers a run for their money. Growing up, Ash could have swore he never saw a stain in the house or even a bit of dirt. When it came to decorating the house, Delia was never sort of inspiration. On the shelf over the mantel, the living room was given an extra holiday cheer by strategically placing all ornaments and baubles. If Santa was indeed coming, he would be delighted to see fireplace dressed up in his await, while the larger-than-life assortment commands plenty of attention, its cool, neutral palette keeps it from feeling over-the-top.
For a cheery and a sweet décor, candy canes were doubling their roles as stocking hangers. Her favourite Christmas decoration was a bunch of flowers in a vase to sit upon the table. There always had to be red blooms and white. It would be wrapped in some brown paper, recycled from earlier in the year and wrapped in garden-wall ivy. The cavalcade of candles were paraded through the center of the mantel. The chandelier above was decked with Christmas ribbons, with sprigs of pine and bows, and tie on pinecones, snowflakes, or Christmas ornaments. So festive! The shelves were graced with plenty of visual intrigue with a set of textured figurines and bunch of miniature Christmas trees, giving the room a more elevated look.
If any guest would show up, there was a small cart at the corner of the room available for their service, with a pitcher of orange juice and some crisps and crackers. On the walls there were removable wall decals, of those golden stars – like there was Christmas magic right on the wall. The decorations seemed endless, that if Ash would stand there noticing them all, dinner would never come.
Lastly, his eyes fell on the large Christmas tree, standing out in the corner. Thick strands of ribbon cascading down the tree? Is there a Christmas without that? In the greens of the Christmas tree was a visual poetry of love. Upon the Christmas tree was a winding pathway of light from base to starlit top. The tree was decorated with an ornament overload. Incorporate touches of blues, red, gold and silver complimented the beauty of the tree. Down at the bottom, were the assorted hampers and gifts Delia had brought for her loved ones, the size was expressing her love.
"Wow, Mrs. Ketchum, this place looks amazing,'' May clasped her hands, marveling at the interior.
"I say every year you go overboard, and you still do,'' Ash huffed.
"May! Oh my sweet child, sorry to keep you waiting!'' Delia beamed, the two closing the distance soon.
"It's so good to see you guys,'' the mother laughed, tears were visible in the corner of her eye. ''Did my Ashy treat you well? Did he bother you at all?'' she interrogated with a stern look directed at her son's face, which was responded with a stressed look from him.
"No no, Mrs. Ketchum,'' May hesitated, Sweatdropping. Her mother would have asked her the same thing if she ever came home with a guy. She blissfully looked at him, and grinned, with her cheeks full of crimson. ''In fact, he watched over me all the times when I was homesick.''
Delia was stunned, but not very surprised. She was proud that she had raised her son to and he knew how to treat women. She grinned and stared at May, who was occupied staring at Ash and him at her. Delia would've loved whoever Ash eventually got together with, because she valued her son's happiness above all else. However, while he was still young, Delia had mentally decided who would make the best partner for Ash, simply based on their friendship and natural chemistry. This on top of the fact that Delia had begun to view May as her own daughter.
Since past one month, Delia and May had formed a solid bond. She would make it a goal to call her everyday even when Ash was out in the sun for training. May was always happy to do something for Delia, be it a small errand or helping her in the garden. Delia never did like putting May to work, however, and often just sat the younger girl down for tea or a good meal.
Once Ash and May finally started to date, Delia felt that everything was right in her son's world. The way her son was smiling, she was beginning to sense that he had moved on from Serena, whose death he always considered was his own fault. Having only her growing up, Delia knew that Ash could've probably used a stronger family unit. She never thought anyone other than Misty would brighten Ash's future by becoming his bride, but maybe she was just another reprimanding, caring sister Ash always needed to grow along with. With May in the picture, this fantasy was beginning to become a reality. Delia knew it would become perfect once the couple actually got married and had children of their own. Then Ash would have the complete family he'd never known.
Delia's attention once again reverted back to her children.
"It's nice to see you too, Mom,'' Ash whistled, looking away. ''Not like I am expecting a hg or anything,''. Except that, he totally was.
"My baby!'' Delia promptly captured the man in a bone crushing hug, throwing her arms around his shoulders. Sniffling, she buried her face in her son's marked cheek. Her eyes were already red and puffy with tears. "You did it… I knew you could."
"Mooo-oooom…" Ash groaned, embarrassed.
"Oh, I know." Delia conceded. She pulled away, wiping her eyes with a finger and then latching her hands around Ash's arms. "I'm just so happy for you. You've worked so hard, and you're finally where you've always wanted to be."
Delia let go, spotting Ash was trying to hide his blush, after they heard May giggling. They would share some words over a hot beverage, later.
"Pika!" the rodent's ears erected up. He thought he heard something. Then a familiar scent, the one he hadn't whiffed in years, was calling out to him.
"Hey?'' Ash's lips twisted. "What's up Pikachu?''
''Pikapi!'' the mouse beamed. Picking up on the scent, he scurried to the end of the hallway, where the back door entrance was.
May blinked. ''Wonder what's got int-?'' she couldn't complete her sentence, as a bag on the chesterfield caught her attention. This sack was familiar, the very one she bought for…
"Huh?'' she gasped, dashing trough the lane Pikachu had just been.
"Hey, could I have a piece of your discovery?'' Ash moaned, tiredly turning towards his mother. "You know something and ain't telling me aren't you?''
"Oh, we have a visitor,'' she winked, and giggled behind her hand.
"Oh yeah,'' Ash droned. ''The other part of Christmas. I should go say hello?''
"You guys can settle down on the table once you are done,'' Delia encouraged. ''I'll begin with the preparations.''
''Sounds good,'' he called in from the end of the hallway. "At least this time she ain't setting me up with that hairy chick across the street…''
Alighting the last step on the porch, he chided, ''Guys, you shouldn't run off without me like that…''
But something was quite peculiar. Cubone, Jigglypuff, Pikachu all surrounded fair heighted man, just a bit taller than May, who seemed far too gleeful to bear hug him, that she wasn't noticing a fuming Ash behind. Ash tilted his head, confused wondering the arrival and identity of this mysterious stranger. Now that his mother had supplied they have a guest over, and judging from May's excitement, the least could be ascertained that this guy was closer to May.
''Oh Max!" May cried, "It's so good to see you here!''
Ash blinked as he heard that name. The guilt that he had hurt May in the past had just washed away, and now with Max in his backyard, it was rising again. Ash could never put a brave face in front of her family.
"Max?'' Ash stuttered.
The boy turned around, a grin on his face and now a new style, the black framed oval glasses, that were slightly askew from May's jostling embrace, shielded those eyes that belonged to Caroline. His hair-do hadn't changed much except they were longer and some strands had to be blocked behind the ear, but some classic versatile beard was making him look quite attractive for a 21 year old. His attire was casual knitwear to roam out on a chilly night. He wore a moderate cardigan over a red tee, and loose baggy jeans. As compared to Norman, he didn't have a head turning physique, as Max was quite slim, so much as to just call a bony structure. But his health did define that he had been on the road for quite a long time.
"Max? It's you,'' Ash drew his breath in.
"Hey Ash!'' the teen waved.
"Look at you…You're a giant now,'' Ash marveled.
"So I have been called.''
May grunted, smacking her brother's shoulder hard. ''Would you two just get over it already? I'll pummel both of you if Mrs. Ketchum will have to reheat the food again!''
With May's anger on the stake, not even a Legendary Pokémon could dare to challenge her ferocity, the two males moved towards one another.
"Aren't you happy to see me, Ash?'' the younger trainer hugged him tightly.
"I truly am,'' Ash laughed, as he patted Max's back. ''I'm just a bit stunned you know. I didn't anticipate your arrival. It's been years since I last saw you.''
"That makes the two of us…''
"Yeah Max,'' May walked over grinning, ''I thought you were gonna be home for Christmas.''
''At first I did wanna be home, but Mom and Dad were gonna hit Kalos this Christmas, so I thought I'll drop in and say Hi,'' Max grinned, ''Also, I was constantly glued to the TV watching your battles, many congratulations Ash!''
''Thanks buddy,'' Ash appreciated. ''I wish you were there to watch me but hey, now that you're in town, you can be here for the finals right? Or do you have some place else to be?''
"I ain't doing anything this week, so yeah, I flew down to watch you in the finals, kinda like train you, you know?''
''Train me?'' Ash's brows furrowed. The kid never got past quarter finals. Yet to keep his spirit, Ash agreed. ''Yeah, cool."
"Oh Ash, there's so much I want to tell you,'' Max rasped. ''And so much I need to hear from you."
"That can wait,'' May sternly interjected. ''Right now, all I want is some of Mrs. Ketchum's stew.''
Stating, she marched inside the house, while the boys chuckled.
"Follow her Max, you may be off the hook if we are late, but I gotta face my Mom's wrath too…" Ash sweatdropped.
"Then, what are we waiting for?'' Max sighed, he knew he couldn't gain Ash's nor May's attention when time to eat was just approaching. And growing up with May, his own needs of food had to be protected or she would gulp it all.
Max set out for the house when he didn't hear the footsteps of accompany. Bewildered he whipped around, finding Ash just standing there.
"Aren't you coming Ash?''
Groaning, Ash rubbed the back of his neck. ''You know, Max…I just wasn't ready for this…"
"For what?''
"To face you guys…you, Norman, Caroline. I have already made amendments with May and all my other friends, but you, you are her family. I hurt you guys just as much as I hurt May. I know things can't be changed, and you guys won't forgive what I did to May…''
"Ash," in a hushing tone, Max calmed him down. ''Let bygones be bygones. Whatever happened was done and dusted. What matters now is that you and May are together, and it means the universe to her."
"Really, Max?'' Ash blinked. "You have forgiven me?''
"A long time ago Ash…" Max convinced. "Not immediately, but whenever I was with you, I knew you wouldn't do anything unnecessarily. Maybe you had your own reasons to run out on us, and truly I respect that."
Those words were like antidotes to the stings panging in Ash's heart. Max's forgiveness was a lot for him. Immediately, his tied visage lit up with a smile. "Max, thank you. I promise I will never run out on your sister again.''
"You probably don't wanna do that cause,'' breathing, Max took a poorly learned fighting stance that was objectionable to many faults. ''I am learning Karate from my Sawk, and you don't wanna mess with me.''
Sweatdropping and not the least intimidated, Ash nodded. ''Oh yeah, very scary…''Let's listen to your tales over some chow now…''
"And just as her Garbodor had used Gunk Shot for the last time, I thought Gallade was a goner and I had again failed to beat Roxie, but out of nowhere, Gallade picked himself up and learned Heal Pulse. And then one Psycho Cut later, I finally had the Toxic badge in my hand!"
While Max was engrossed clearing and sharing the stories from his journeys, may and Ash exchanged looks, happy that the young trainer was way too charismatic.
"So now you have all the eight badges, don't you?'' Ash smiled at him and gave an appreciating smile at May who placed the casserole on the table. "You know what that means…''
"Yeah, I can finally enter the Unova League and challenge Iris after I win it!''
''Hear it from me, Bud,'' Ash bit into his broccoli. ''Iris ain't a walk in the park. She's got an entire team full of dragons. But hey, you guy haven't met her right? She was here on Thanksgiving. May has met her.''
Max gawked. "Is that true May? You have met the Unova Champion?''
"Yeah,'' she took a sat next to Ash. ''Actually, she and Ash are close friends.''
"She was my travelling partner while I was in Unova…'' Ash added. ''You know, I have been calling her lately because she's gonna help me in my battle against Lance. I can fix a battle between you guys."
"Nope!'' Max stopped him . "I am gonna do that on my own efforts. I have been preparing for this day all my life. Due to my studies, I set on my journeys late, and now that I have gained enough experience, I will break my way through in and climb that top of the ladder myself!''
Delia chuckled, as she brought in the last container. "That's the spirit that reminds me of a certain someone."
"Yeah, but at least I was a little reasonable at my age…like, I knew what were my strengths and weaknesses…''
Everyone laughed, ridiculing Ash's statement as a joke.
"Please…I chided for your dumb strategies the first day I met you!'' Max guffawed.
"He's got a point there, babe,'' May giggled, making her boyfriend grumble.
"Let's just eat…'' Ash groaned.
Driving was a perfect exercise that had worked on Ash's huge appetite. The dinner wasn't on a grand scale, probably because Delia was reserving her talents and creativity for the night of Christmas. Tonight was just a quintessential inter dinner. Her version of the beef stew was a total classic, unbeatable and ne that couldn't have been plagiarized, cause who knows what secret ingredient would she put in. As Max took a bite of his Bolognese, he was reminded of his mother's cooking, that he dearly missed on his journeys. Mashed with a rich combination of butter, sour cream, cream cheese, and raclette cheese, it seemed like the raclette casserole was gonna be wiped clean. Down by the table, the household Pokémon relished their dinner with munchies and berries that sustain boost in health.
Delia tilted her head, sighing comfortably and more contentedly. The atmosphere was much more relaxed with the gang talking together. This did exactly what she had hoped to do. She took a glance at May, and wondered, when would be the right time to talk to her parents…about their children. For all she knew, she wouldn't have wanted anyone but May to become her daughter-in-law.
She saw how fast both of them were wolfing down their food. Delia smiled. "Heheh…They've got that in common.''
She did chide Ash for his pace, but May assured that he couldn't be changed. However, that couldn't appease the mother much. She didn't drag the disagreement any further, instead going back to the counter to get the pudding.
"Umm…Ash,'' Max perked is head up from his plate now that his plate was clean.
"Yeah Max?'' Ash huffed, holding his bloated stomach, leaning back in his chair, eyes desperately searching for leftovers even if they had to be in somebody else's plate.
"Remember Terracotta Town?''
Ash blinked, puzzled. What object on the table could even remind Max of Terracotta Town?
"Yes…" Ash grinned, talking May's hand in his. ''Can't forget that place…like ever.''
"Remember that promise you made me in the park? Right when I was having the separation blues – that when I would become a trainer, you'll battle me.''
"I remember it well, Max.'' Ash assured. "Why are you asking?''
"Because I want you to adhere it." Max announced, a little bit louder, gaining attention of Pikachu below.
"Max, Ash just had to drive the entire day,'' May reasoned. ''He's pretty beat.''
"I am not saying I want to have that battle right now!'' Max argued. ''Tomorrow, maybe even after Christmas…Come on Ash, it's gonna be a two way street. Think of it as a training exercise and I will get my battle, what do you say? It's a quid-pro-pro!''
"Calm down , Max…'' Ash sweatdropped. Max woke up and looked down, his hands were on the table, and chair was pushed behind when he absent mindedly got up.
"Tomorrow's the eve, got a stack of stuff to do, but yeah…I think I could leak out some time for that battle.'' Ash humbly accepted.
"Thanks Ash!"
"Max…"May pressed her hand against her head. Her brother was just so stubborn. When was he gonna learn to let things go?
"And ta-da!'' Delia returned with a big bowl of Christmas pudding. A subtly spiced white-chocolate vanilla pudding fills the chocolate wafer cookie crust in this make-ahead-friendly holiday dessert. It was made with such love and soaked in so much brandy that it made us all quite merry. The christmas pudding sat on the table as some melancholy lump waiting to become one with the overly cushioned hips of the diners.
"Oh Mom, wow!'' Ash already had a spoon ready to scoop.
"Don't hesitate for seconds okay, Max?'' Delia blushed, her role as a hostess mustn't fall short of anything…ever, although her son's antics could be worrying.
"Mrs. Ketchum, this is so good!''May praised after her second monstrous bite. ''You should share this recipe with my Mom!''
"Speaking of which, aren't you guys gonna call them?'' Ash brought up the subject. "It will be nice when they see both of you together.''
"Why don't I keep a recorder along?'' Delia hummed. ''My baby rarely says stuff like this.''
"MOM!''
"It's a good idea Ash,'' Max beamed. ''We should call them right after dinner. Mrs. Ketchum,'' Max turned to her. ''You wouldn't mind if we use your Intercom?''
''Of course not dear,'' she giggled.
"Cool," Max raised his hands with gusto. ''I can't wait to see the look on Dad's face after he sees I won the last badge.''
"Yeah…yeahh..surprising for a Gym Leader, ain't it.'' May teased.
"Oh yeah…" Ash saw his opportunity for revenge. "After you not making it in any League beyond top 16, I wouldn't see your dad quite surprised… I mean, how much would he expect? I am telling you now, he may have his own doubts…''
"Really?'' Max blinked, switching over to May who was nodding in sync with Ash.
"In May's case, it's different. She's already been a two time Top Coordinator and goes by the name 'Princess of Hoenn'; you…I got no idea what they call you.''
"I don't think they do Ash. Max hasn't made his own identity yet.'' May added.
''Well, I was trying to not to say that, but she did,'' Ash casted her a side eye. ''You know, parents do stay optimistic but then after certain failures, they do begin to drop the ball, and begin to wonder career options for their kids, am I right, Mom?''
''Oh yeah…" Delia played her part as well. ''When Ash had lost yet another league, I knew that my baby would be sad, and that made me sad too, but it wasn't a news for me.''
''See?'' Ash took over. ''When you break it to your dad, I bet he wouldn't give you any winning tips.''
"But you never gave up. You were a runner up in the Kalos League and then won the Alola Conference as well.''
"All due to special abilities of my Pokémon, my super rare Greninja and a special species of Lycanroc. Add some mythicals like Naganadel and Melmetal, and I had my work cut out. My victory over Alola Region was nothing but the Z-Crystals. If not for them, I would have been anywhere near the finals. Trust me, Leagues are a like hornet's nest. And you don't even have a Mega Evolution kit, do you?"
"Really?" Max sulked. ''That's disappointing but you guys do have a point. My parents may never be as proud of me as they are of May. I have been keeping my nose into the grindstone but I haven't got anywhere. I know I am good at it, yet I keep losing. Now I ain't sure if it's worth now. I'll just end up disappointing my parents and it's a new region again.''
A small giggle erupted and everyone started laughing.
"Relax bro,'' Ash threw an arm around the demotivated teen. "We are just taking the mickey out of ya. Sorry if we went overboard.''
''Yeah Max,'' May assured, by getting up and leaning down on her brother. ''Mom and Dad are very much proud of you. Trust me, the house is always like Max this, Max that…''
"Your failures will only make you a better trainer, dear.'' Delia chimed. "Don't ever doubt yourself…''
"Guys…" Max whined. "I was almost gonna give it all up.''
"And that would be only thing to regret.'' Ash took a bite of his pudding.
"Ash?'' the man's attention was driven towards a soft, melodious motherly request. ''You know it's time for Christmas…''
"Save it, Mom.'' Ash groaned. ''I know the guys at restaurant want their bonuses; I'll write you the checks. I have to make a lot of donations tomorrow anyway.''
"Donations?'' Max quizzed.
''And don't be stingy like last Christmas.'' Delia gleefully went back into the kitchen.
"Sting out?'' Ash's eyes bulged. ''They each got $10000 last time. How is that stingy?''
"$10000!" Max coughed out his pudding. "You make it sound like 10 dollars.''
"Oh, I might have forgotten to mention something…'' May giggled.
"Long story Max…'' Ash sighed. "I'll slip you some Aplezin when you need to hear it…"
May and Max bunked in his bedroom, while he himself crashed on the couch, after sneaking in a late night snack. Pikachu was always right where his trainer was, curled into a ball, over Ash's chest. He cuddles in, feeling the rise and fall of his trainer's chest, the rhythmic noise slowing his own breathing. He raised his head, careful not a bust any movement in his body that would awaken the mouse up. How glad he was they were still best partners since the first day they met. He was well aware of how much attention the mouse needed, to have ran away from Cerise labs all the way to Pallet Town. Silly little rodent…
Ash sighed, burying his head deeper into the cushion. Another warm breath exited his nostrils, as he stroked Pikachu's fur. Where was his life taking him? One of the youngest business magnates on earth, too young to be a billionaire, a widow...what was exactly in his life he should be happy about. He had a house, but no feeling of home in it. Why couldn't he be a better husband? Was work really that important? Can his success ever compensate for Serena? If he would look at it clearly, the only thing came good was that May was back in his life. He was reunited with his friends… he was one step away from becoming a Champion once again…Now that many things were on the course of being achieved in a short time, what about May?
It was only a month and a few days since he had met her. They got closer, they toured around Kanto once more, she was with him all along supporting him, and they even had sex. His thoughts diverted him back to the jewellery store he saw in Cerulean City once more. But he wasn't able to fix his mind on it. How soon is too soon? Other widowed people like to trot out the tired cliché – "If you have to ask, it's too soon." It's such a circular and unhelpful answer that I'd like to ban the phrase from the grief lexicon because given the minefield of rules and expectations surrounding widowhood, asking is the only way to clarify whether the signals you are receiving from your peers, family and friends are about your welfare or their self-interest. Maybe he should join a club…
Well, May isn't going anywhere…she did say she's coming to Sinnoh with him. He still has time….he knew that she wanted to stay with him, that he was worth the asking, worth the traditional wedding proposal. That was important. It wasn't about the ring or the roses, though both were beautiful, it was about seeing that she was the one he'd risk his pride for. Then she could say yes, not before. Let's suppose it's a right of passage of sorts for us both. He needed the courage to ask. He needed to patience to wait.
His tired eyes were trying to hypnotize him into sleep. His head lolled and muscles were relaxed, releasing the tension of his day. Though the television blares his eyes are almost closed and from his chest comes the first guttural snore.
His dreams took him back to his house in Kalos, one that he lived in with Serena. She was nowhere to be found except a large picture of her and Ash on the wall. In the soft light and humid air she would tune into the noises like they were an auditory jigsaw puzzle. On each conjuring of her sacred place she felt a frisson of joy, the same kind as she felt when Pikachu and Sylveon greeted her after a long day, only many times more intense. The leaves would feel wet and more tough than they appeared, the aroma went right to her brain, intoxicating, rich. Then with a steady gaze she'd pick one small place and stare until she had unmasked the camouflage of the creatures hidden in plain sight.
"Ash?'' he heard a voice reaching out to him from the attic. This voice didn't belong to Serena. The tone had a loving yet a heavy authority only like a wife would call out to her husband. Alarmed he ran straight through the maze of a house, climbing the stairs, and bursting into the room, finding May into the large closet surrounded by a pile of old boxes. This was a dream or a nightmare, Ash wasn't sure…but if the boxes start growing teeth and attack her, it's a nightmare.
''Ash look, it' s so cute…''
"Aw, look how cute!" her back was turned to him, and with a 'come over here' signal she itched him to come closer.
Ash took a few more steps and glanced over to see what May was looking at. Catching sight of the object held in her hand, he gasped and leapt forward, snatching it out of her grasp, foot work cautious to not fall over the other boxes.
"Hey!" May snapped, jumping up to face Ash, "what's the big idea?"
"Don't look at that!" Ash wailed, clutching the item to his chest, "it's so embarrassing."
"No it isn't. It's adorable!"
"Babe, I don't like it," Ash denied May the pleasure of a second look, trying to dump the object back in one of the boxes.
"I'm your fiancée," May rolled her eyes, pronouncing the word with an air of elegance and, Ash hinted, joy, "I'm not gonna make fun of that. It's probably what our son will look like anyway," she said the last part with a devious smirk.
Ash grew wide eyed as his heart began to race, and he quickly threw the ornament back at May, who caught it with ease. She held it in front of her again, smiling fondly at the baby blue porcelain frame, to be hung by a royal blue ribbon, and displaying the sweetest picture of an infant Ash, fast asleep and curled up.
"It's still embarrassing," Ash grumbled.
"You were such a cute baby!" May cooed, eyes sparkling, "Oh, your hair looks the same! Jet black and sticking out all over the place."
"May, put it away!" Ash whined, tugging at his locks. "Really…sticks out in every place?''
"This is definitely going on the wall or on the tree," May skipped over to the tall, dark green pine.
"Come on, it's gonna be mortifying. Guys from work are gonna be here for Christmas," Ash folded his arms and pouted."Besides, it won't really suit up there…''
"Really?" May raised an eyebrow.
"Yes, really."
May gently hung the ornament from one of the branches, and skipped back towards the large boxes that contained all of the Christmas decorations she and Ash were in charge of putting up. So far, however, she'd done all the work, while Ash complained about having to do all the "hard" jobs like hanging up the lights, which he'd yet to even attempt. May knew she'd have to take the camera out for that one, especially when he got on the roof.
"I thought you loved Christmas Ash," May commented nonchalantly, still digging through the decorations.
"I do," Ash sighed, sitting down next to the pretty brunette "I just don't like doing all this work."
What work have you done? May thought acidly to herself as she shuffled through red velvet ribbons and small plastic cases.
"Hey, look at this!" Ash's voice jolted May out of her thoughts. In his hand, he held up a round, glass ornament, messily painted to look like a poke ball. "I made this when I was younger. I must have been about four."
"I didn't know you were an arts and crafts kind of guy," May teased playfully.
"I was as long as it had to do with Pokémon," Ash laughed in response. He got up to hang the homemade ornament on the still rather bare tree.
May pulled another ornament out of the box, this one a figurine of Pikachu.
"Pika!" Pikachu squeaked excitedly, jumping onto May's shoulder to get a better look.
"Yes, it's you Pikachu!" May laughed, scratching behind the electric mouse's long, slender ears.
"My Mom bought that after I got Pikachu," Ash piped up from behind May. He kneeled down and reached under her arm to take it, pulling the young woman into a tight hug as he did so. "It reminded her of me, especially while I was away, so it's one of her favorites."
"Your Mom always seemed to appreciate Pikachu's return just a little more than your own," May chuckled at the memory.
"Haha, very funny," Ash scoffed lovingly as he kissed May atop her head. He decided to place the ornament near the top of the tree, so the star would shine down on it, and everyone could see the special object.
"Well, well, look at this."
Ash raised an eyebrow and jumped back down next to May. "What did you find?"
"This," she held up a large fluffy red sweater.
"Yeah, it was one of the league's gifts to me after I won," Ash laughed, rubbing the back of his head, "Serena knitted it out for me. She loved stuff like these…"
"That's understandable," May smiled, "wow, I didn't even realize! It was exactly one month until Christmas."
The sweater had no dust or stain, neither a string came loose or fingers smudging its beautiful appearance.
"You never wore it?" May mused as she handed it to Ash.
"I wanted to wear it in front of her…I never got the chance to."
"Oh?"
"Yeah," Ash nodded, "she used to stay up nights knitting this."
She dropped the subject, knowing it will only hurt Ash more if they stayed on the topic. She neatly folded the sweater, aiming to make Ash wear it this Christmas. Another item caught her attention…something that was sparkling. It was a piece of gold. May further leaned finding her item of interest was priceless ornament. She picked it up, finding quite heavy.
It was pure gold ring, that had engraved in some of the fanciest ancient caligraphy she'd ever seen:
A&S
May continued to stare at the object. It was to be hung by a gold, true silk ribbon. The whole thing was incredibly fancy, and a shot of reality as far as Ash's past life was concerned. To her, he was still just…Ash. She couldn't view him as the famous celebrity and revered, ultimate Pokémon master that he now was. To be honest, she wasn't sure if Ash could even view himself that way.
"Oh that…'' Ash hinted. ''That is Serena's engagement ring.''
May gasped. It was the most beautiful ring she had ever seen, even more glorious than the one she had on her finger. She was surrounded in a sea of items that Ash and Serena had planned to hang up on Christmas. Each of them was so valuable to Ash…how could she ever discard all of this stuff. Shaking her head to abandon the thoughts, May continued digging through the sea of holiday ornaments. Each one was so special to Ash and Serena, with a unique story for them all.
But things had to change. They were soon to be married now. It was just going to take some getting used to.
As May sadly shifted through the decorations, she stopped at a particularly striking box. It was dark green velvet, wrapped in a shiny white ribbon. May lifted it out gingerly, untying the bow and carefully opening the soft square container. What was held inside made May blush heavily.
The ornament was a gold heart, smooth and shining. A silk, red ribbon graced the top, and in the center of the heart, was a picture of May. It was a simple photo; she wasn't dressed up, her hair wasn't done, and she was fairly certain she wasn't even wearing any make up. It was just her smiling informally.
"That one is my favorite." Ash hugged her from behind. ''And that's gonna be on top of the tree…''
May whipped around, finding herself face to face with Ash, whose chocolate brown eyes danced with glee. A gentle smile was gracing his face, and a little giggle escaped from his throat.
"A…Ash," May breathed, "I…" He gave her a somewhat confused look.
Softly placing the ornament on the floor, May turned back around and enveloped her future husband into a hug.
"I love you Ash."
Ash looked down at the red head and smiled lovingly, hugging her back firmly.
"I love you too May."
Next day, the day of Christmas Eve…
It was finally Christmas Eve. The morning arrived such that even the clouds had inner grins.
Golden rays of the morntide come as invitations to the day. The halo of the horizon arrives with golden grace. People all over the world were excited. Those who were still living in 23rd December on the other part of the world must be tad bit jealous of those who would first greet the sunrise in the east. People all over the world had made it through the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and now were listing their Christmas Bucket List!
While some people off Pallet Town were off to other regions for vacations their kids have been persisting for, the others stayed behind fighting in a cut-throat competition to decorate their houses. The bleached white snow wasn't going to stop the whiskey-nosed Santa from coming.
The Ketchum family could relax today. Not much was on the chores list as everything was already checked off. Only a trip to the store for a few last minute items had to be purchased. But the house was still as lively. While having declined the integration team to join them at the Christmas Party, Ash negotiated to be virtually present online with them. Due to the time difference between Kanto and Kalos, he had to wake up early to be on the Conference Calls with the clients and investors. Then, he spent an hour signing all the non-discretionary bonus packages for his office, letting the third partner, Felix take care of the rest.
Like always, Professor Oak was hosting the Christmas party tonight, and if Delia was the planner, something fun was gonna come up. While Delia was off to the community house to discuss the plan with other members, the house was left in the care of Mr. Mime. Breakfast was just on the verge of an end, but for loving due, it was done already the minute it arrived on the table.
Max gulped his last sandwich, and got up excitedly, the five sandwiches fueling his steam. Having a one track mind since he arrived, he badgered Ash once again, giving him a reminder of the battle he promised him last night. "Come on Ash! It's 10 am already! I want to battle you and see all the Pokémon that you have!''
May calmly sipped her coffee, knowing Max was itching to leave the house. What was exciting him anyway? She knew what the odds were gonna be? Ash had pulverized her Pokémon in five minutes…the only one in the family that can stand to a battle with Ash for just ten minutes would be their father…who was bound to lose too. Out of the corner of her eye, she could easily see Ash twitching.
Ash nodded, headed towards the exit at a jog already.
"Hey wait? At least take you dishes to the sink? Are you two gone already?!" May chastised.
They were out even before she got out of the chair. Pikachu raised his hands up, asking non-verbally to be picked up.
Her mood dipped. ''Great, now there's two of them…Come on, Pikachu let's go.''
She obliged Pikachu's request, and headed out of the door, after Mimey offered to take care of the dishes.
A few minutes later she reached the top of the steps to Oka's ranch, where the two boys stood on a lawn. They had sprinted up her two at a time, but graciously waited for her to join them. She was gassed, however, Pikachu leaped off her arms and took a seat on the log, persisting May to join him.
Ash stood regally in his spot, eyeing his opponent. Max's feature showed no emotions he hid what he was feeling well to those around him minus his pokémon.
"Pikapi, pi cha pikcahu, pi," Pikachu chirped in amusement.
Ash relished this moment. It had felt like a lifetime ago he had made that promise to Max back in Terracotta. Max was now a trainer for a few years and Ash had never gotten a chance to give the young boy the battle he wanted. Now Ash could keep that promise even though Max wouldn't know about it until later. Still, it set the trainer ablaze with excitement.
Max was ready. He felt the fears of the night prior slowly melting as the sights and sounds of the stadium around him calmed him down into the groove he was use to. He had been here before and knew that once the battle started he'd be ready. Again he saw Ash's eyes make their way up to May and could see her enthusiasm as she waved to Ash.
"Hey," Max shouted toward his opponent. "Take your eyes off your girlfriend and get ready."
"Relax dude," Ash said as he finished looking at his girlfriend. "The battle will soon begin. It's always nice to look at those who support you before a battle. I don't know who's holding the pompoms for you, but May is in this with me. Can it just be that you don't have a girlfriend yet?''
Max blushed deeper red. Sure, rub my nose in it! "Your mind games ain't working on me, Ash! Let's get this battle started!''
The man adjusted his hair. ''Three on three. No heals, no swaps. Sounds cool?''
The two grinned widely at each other, backing up enough to create a makeshift training field between them. Max leaned, and much to Ash's dismay and surprise, he chucked the ball in the same way Ash used to as a kid.
"Seriously?''
A bipedal pokémon took a battling stance in front of Max. The lower half of the pokémon was white but starting at the middle of its torso turned green until it came to its neck. Its head was primarily white with a green helmet like feature covering half its face. Along its green arms were blade like appendages, which ran from the end of its elbows to his fore arms. The Gallade that stood firmly in front of Max, arms ready to slice into opponent like sickles.
The veteran trainer crossed his arms, looking thoroughly impressed with Max's choice thus far. It seemed that, unlike Ash, Max was not eager to acquire any and every Pokémon that crossed his path even so early in his journey. However, something about the Gallade seemed familiar. "Hey, that ain't the Ralts we met that time in Hoenn, is it?"
"He is!" Max boasted. "I made good on my promise. The day after I got my training license, I came for him. Treecko was my official starter, but he's only my second Pokémon." During the discussion, the Gallade puffed his little chest out proudly whilst the Ash cockily grinned. "I got him where we promised to meet!"
Ash showed no sign of surprise. He expected Max to go with one of his three most powerful Pokémon. The only question was if he would be facing all three and he made his game plan based on that. Ash grabbed his choice and nonchalantly threw the device in the air to reveal his first Pokémon. Stood before him, was the same fearless Lucario who earned him the victory over Karen two days ago. Ash didn't have time to rotate his roster and was still carrying the same team that had raid the Tower.
"... Ash, really? A fighting-steel type?" The youth crossed his arms. "At least don't pit a Lucario against a Pokemon whose dually beneficial!"
"You do realize you are here to congratulate me on winning against the Elite Four." The man frowned. The teen still had all the bite to him he ever had, it seemed. Still, Ash knew what he was doing, so his confidence in his Pokémon and himself allowed him to sweep away the insult with little problem. "Let me catch you up…''
The two combatants stood still, examining their opponent for the round. May analyzed the battle from the sidelines. "Max does have a type advantage," she mumbled to herself, "but knowing Ash, he's got a move or something he's going to exploit."
Sensing Max wasn't willing to make the first move, Ash commenced the battle. "Lucario, start off with Aura Sphere!''
"Gallade, dodge it and use Psycho Cut!''
Lucario rattled off a brilliant blue sphere, only for Gallade to glide sideways across the grass and return fire. Gallade sprinted, its right arm pulsing with powerful pinkish energy. Gallade leaped, releasing a two light blue slashes.
Ash began to smirk as he saw where the Pokémon had moved to. "Lucario, Double Team and Aura Sphere again!''
Though he wouldn't admit it, Max now saw why Ash hadn't hesitated to call for his fighting type. Had Lucario been with Ash longer, or were Ash's techniques simply superior to Max's for now? Probably the latter; introspective and analytical as he was, Max knew Ash had a certain passive affinity, a natural talent, for battling that Max had to study for… Not that it discouraged the young but passionate trainer too much. It simply made Ash all the better of an opponent.
Gallade stood bizarre, surrounded by the facsimiles of his true opponent, each one of them generating a pulsing power sphere in their paws. With force they pushed their hands forward, launching those orbs of fighting spirit all at once. Using his acrobatic abilities, Gallade flipped through a few slot, but one Aura Sphere found its mark, making Gallade a victim of the rest. Had Gallade not been a Psychic type, he would have been slayed under the wrath of aura.
Hurled from the smoke, Gallade tumbled.
"Are you alright?'' Max asked hurriedly. Gallade growled in affirmation, picking himself up from the cold ground once, standing valiantly like a knight in front of the squad of Lucarios.
"Gallade, Slash on all of them!''
Quickly bearing down at the gang of fighting type in a sacrificial act, the Blade Pokemon for his namesake, slashed and cut through each of the copies, not relenting any mercy until each one of them puffed in smoke until the real one was identified. When there were no more copies Max let out a small gasp. Although no copy remained it seemed that Lucario hadn't either, in fact he was nowhere to be seen. Where could he have gone?
While Max was still lost in deep thoughts, Ash wasn't patient enough to surprise him. "Blaze Kick!''
The blue blur mixed with orange layers swept through the air, and the ablazed foot cleanly scorched Gallade's chest without a warning, making him careen through.
"Focus Blast, Gallade!''
Using his fancy legs to apply brakes on his flight, Gallade found the ground and created a perfect round sphere of cobalt blue energy, slinging it at Lucario. The experience Aura Pokemon far too supreme and governing in fighting techniques, slapped the orb at a far distance into the woods, leaving Max and Gallade alike flabbergasted.
"Blaze Kick once again, let's go!''
A emit of smoke later, Lucario's feet were ignited, and in no mood to waste a another second, the fighting type executed a perfect flying kick.
"Quick, Teleport!"
Though Lucario was speedy enough, the canine's feet couldn't carry him fast enough to make impact on the Gallade Instead, his foot- on which unspent flames danced- passed through the afterimage of his opponent who landed safely behind him at a distance after his teleportation. The aura spirit guide regained his bearings on the ground, flames dissipated.
Ash's grin decreased. "Teleportation is one nasty move of the psychic line…"
"You are tricky Ash, I'll give you that." Max boasted, brushing something under his nose. "But how do you plan to catch on with Teleport?''
"Not my first time battling a Gallade, Max,'' Ash face-palmed.
"But with my Gallade, it is!" Max threw a hand out. "Teleport again and this time ready with a Slash!''
Eyes glowing pink momentarily, Gallade's form took a multicolored glow, the mechanics of which made the Blade Pokemon disappear, increasing the tensions with Ash and Lucario.
~Stay calm, Use your aura to trace out the living things around~ he encouraged, tapping into their mental link.
Frowning, the stoic warrior instructed by closing his eyes, channeling out the aura of everything that made sound, from the buzzing to the heart beats of everyone around. The aura of everyone called out to him. There were too unfamiliar forces of energy – one of the geek boy that stood on the other end of the field, other was just seeming to come into existence from another dimension…from above! Lucario quickly sent a telepathic message to Ash.
"Bone Rush!''
Returning into existence, Gallade materialized, his leafy appendage slicing Lucario, except something hard got in the way – a pure aura constructed bone. With a lightning speed, Lucario bolted in front of the blue of Gallade, making the Blade warrior's breath steal away.
Max gasped. "Gallade, Slash now!''
"Aura Sphere!''
Sensors feeling a chill through them, Lucario struck the staff right into Gallade, eliciting a painful screech. Max's eyes widened as his Gallade was blasted back into the ground, perfectly knocked out.
May's shoulders drooped. "Oh boy. No tears this time…"
It almost took out the bitterness of seeing the swirls on Gallade's eyes; almost. "Aw, thanks anyway, Gallade. We'll work on our timings better, ok? Take rest…"He returned Gallade to its pokémon and continued to look on in disbelief. What happened?
Max began to assess his situation; he calmly looked around the battlefield before his eyes rested on Lucario. It wasn't like he missed Lucario's performance against Karen. He was aware that Lucario wasn't like any other and he had gained the idea what Lucario was capable of.
"That was a good strategy Ash," Max spoke up. " You had me in a con the entire battle, had me thinking of ways to beat you that you already game planned for. Very good thinking."
Ash took his words in but decided not to respond. He looked at the young trainer and gave a slight shrug. He knew Max was plotting something, and someone who was always by his side for long, he was risking letting Max get the wind of it.
"Lucario, return!" Ash spoke up first, recalling the Aura Pokemon. The fighting type grunted in surprise, displeased he wasn't allowed to continue. Ash couldn't afford to give Max another tactical advantage, he'd decided. "Good job." He replaced him quickly. "You didn't get your match at the League, here's you chance, Seismitoad!''
"toad~" the Vibration Pokemon croaked, puffing his bumps. This distant cousin of Croagunk was less intimidating than the poison type line.
Max's eyes sparkled. "Wow, a Unova Pokemon!" Delighted, Max lobbed his next Pokeball forward, releasing a snarling Mightyena.
"Mightyena use Quick Attack to get in close then follow up with an Iron Tail," Max started the battle off. Mightyena's tail began to glow as it approached its target. When it got within striking distant it gave a short jump into a front flip with the intention of striking the toad Pokémon on the head.
Ash looked on calmly, just waiting for Mightyena to make a touch. Thuk!
Mightyena finished its spin, burying its metallic tail into Seismitoad's head, and howled, "rawww!"
Seismitoad groaned finding himself sitting on his rack, while Mightyena, pleased with itself, scratched back to its position. However, it felt that it had caught some kind of virus while making contact with Seismitoad, as for some suspicious reason it was feeling weak and tiring…and his breathing was taking a toll. Purple bubbles splat near its face and a thin violet crease appeared on his nose.
"He's poisoned!'' Max gasped.
"Oh yeah…Seismitoad comes with the ability, Poison Touch…but I thought you had researched a lot on Unova region.'' Ash shrugged his shoulders. "Heh…no wonder it took you three turns to flat Roxie…''
"Ahhh….We can still beat you! Dark Pulse!''
"Then perhaps we should contest in Pacman…Hydro Pump!''
Mightyena agreed, baring its fangs at seemingly less interested Seismitoad. The nerve! The bite Pokemon snarled, maw churned with dark, roiling energy, and Mightyena fired the energy at Seismitoad, however eyes focused only upon the gushing stream of water that had exited the toad's mouth. Max began to seriously panic, he knew Mightyena could take a hit and still get up but if he couldn't even land an attack then it wouldn't matter.
The torrent hit the grass where Mightyena just stood, creating a large crater to signify its strength.
"Drain Punch!'' Ash threw a hand out.
The bulbous digit on one hand charged a green parasitic swirl on his arm, the toad sprinted, speed surprising for a Pokemon that looked lazy.
"I know about that. Seismitoad generally vibrate the bumps on their hands to increase power." Max's eyes balled, increasing their size on the glasses. "Quick, dodge and use Crunch!''
In a show of grace and ferocity both Pokémon dodged each other's attacks and tried to connect their own strike. The dance continued as neither Pokémon found an advantage until Seismitoad made the first mistake. Losing his balance, Seismitoad failed to reach the ground, as the dark type buried its fangs with a powerful chomp into the toad's arm, forcing it to the ground, latching is sharp teeth into the water type, winched and furious with the painful bite.
The same vibration that had pulsed energy into the amphibian's arm, quaked his whole body including the arm. The sudden tremors violently shook Mightyena, who couldn't focus at its prey letting the toad escape. Another round of poison slowed the Pokemon's vigor and depleted its stamina.
"rawww…." The dark type howled.
"Mightyena!'' Max cried.
"Mud Shot!" Ash stated.
Max stared in horror as Seismitoad inhaled a deep breath, shooting multiple globs of mucks, bursting Mightyena in its spot. Dropping immobile on the ground, Max stared in disbelief as his pokemon fought unconsciousness.
Despite his trembling arms, he recalled his own. A red beam hit the dark type and it vanished into its pokeball. Max looked on in shock. "All Mightyena took was one hit! How strong is he?!"
Ash looked on in amusement. He knew the thoughts that were racing in the young trainer's mind.
"Wow…Ash has decisively taken down two of Max's Pokemon with ease…" May mumbled.
"Pika pi…"
Max chucked another pokeball, with a bit more aggression than the last. "Go Metang!''
Metang arrived prepared hovering above the field, hunkering in one place. Max too tensed, senses on high alert. The air was alive with anticipation, and he could feel a tingle at the tip of his fingers.
"Genius, Max! Knowing that Metang is immune to Seismitoad's poisoning…but is that all?'' Ash thought out aloud.
"I'll start," Ash led. "Seismitoad, use Mud Shot!"
Seismitoad obeyed, firing off a brown flurry of explosive mud bombs towards Metang.
"Dodge that, with Magnet Rise," Max quickly countered.
Metang shone with a golden outline and rose in the air with noteworthy agility, the barrage of mud slipping underneath it.
"Take Down!'' Max continued through.
Seismitoad's head reared back as Metang shot forward like a rocket, ready to send him off soaring.
"Grab the horn!'' Ash commanded. Seismitoad flexed his digits, and began vibrating his bulbs again. Metang shrieked, thrown off balance when it was yanked down by its horn.
"Quick, Iron Defense!''
Metang covered itself in a dense metallic sheen, weighing the two Pokemon down. Seismitoad gawked, his opponent seemed heavier than the natural weight.
"Awesome!'' Max praised, triumphant. "Metal Claw!''
Displeased that it had a foreign hand grabbed on its horn, Metang's fist found hide as the blow landed. The initial silver streak only made Seismitoad budge but Metang was undeterred, slashing back and forth without mercy. Annoyed grunts from Seismitoad became pained cries, as the attack continued to pile on power.
"Supersonic!''
Known for his vibrations, Seismitoad tortured his prisoner back with force with sonic waves of displeasure, making it lose its momentum. Had Metang had ears it could have covered them, but even the lack of ears didn't prevent Seismitoad's screech.
"Drain Punch!''
Max swallowed.
"toad!" Seismitoad grunted, willing himself to stand on his feet, against the immense pressure of Metang's weight against him. "Seis…" He tensed, yanking its body forward. "mi…! toad!"
With a roar, the Vibration Pokemon produced the green orb on his fist, brutally smashing Metang into the ground before him. Wrestled to the earth in a brutal blow that doubled as fighting and ground-type damage, Metang reeled in pain. His concentration was shattered, and the silver gleam on his grey coat lost its luster.
"His defenses are down," Ash noted with confidence. "Hydro Pump!"
Seismitoad snickered, parting his mouth on the downed opponent, firing the torrent. Hydro pump poured forth with such force, Metang had to bring up its claws up to keep itself from being shoved backward.
The debris quickly cleared, and Metang lay unconscious.
Max sighed, returning Metang. "Well, that's that…we lost.'' He was deeply lost in thought, He didn't even hear Ash approaching until the slapping sound of having his shoulder clapped reached him, along with the slight sting of pain. Ash was strong; so much so, that even a friendly slap on the shoulder hurt a little.
"Ya doin' alright?" the elder trainer repeated when Max didn't answer him.
"Huh? Oh! Yeah. I'm…" He trailed off, looking to Ash and then back to the quieting field.
Ash spoke kindly to his old traveling companion. "You should be proud of the trainer you've become."
Max gave a sad smile. ''Thank you, Ash…''
"That was still great!" May squealed, approaching her brother in pride. "Ash has been training a lot, but you did your best against him!" she reminded. She threw her hand around his neck, and noogied his head.
"Geez, stop that May…" Max blushes, dressing his messed up hair back. ''I ain't a little kid.''
"Oh, I am just so proud…''
"I am too…'' Ash joined. Realizing that Max was looking to him, Ash rubbed under his nose, grinning. "Heheh! That's even better I did my first time against Norrman." He let out a content sigh. " I'd say I have lived up to my promise, don't you think?." He held out a curled fist, offering it to Max to bump.
The boy choked up, bumping his fist against Ash's before blubbering. "Y-Yeah! This is good! I did good! I just have to work harder from now on!"
May couldn't help but throw her arm around her brother, hugging him close. "Look at you all energetic…''
"Let's lighten up the mood..'' Ash took the boy under his arm. ''How does the idea of a whole day 'Space Wars" marathon sound? I got snacks and beer…"
"I have watched it over like a hundred times already…'' Max laced the idea with no enthusiasm.
"But have you watched it wit director's commentary and extra 29 seconds footage?'' Ash quirked a brow, creating urgency into the heart of the teen.
"You…you have that…you really have that…." Max stuttered.
"Yup buddy.''
"Oh no…here we go…" May slumped her shoulders.
Max's eyes twinkled, flashing in the glasses. ''I have been the deepest corners of Internet searching for that! I knew this day would come…Let's go Ash!"
Energetic and inspired, the boys ran off.
May shook her head, tiredly. She hadn't envisioned her Christmas eve watching dumb space movies. She leaned down and picked up Pikachu, mumbling.. "Boys will be boys…."
And that's another chapter in the books. Hope you enjoyed Max's return. I have special plans for Seismitoad, as I believe it's quite underrated. Just one more character – Dawn and she'll be in Sinnoh series soon. In fact the first two, and by the looks of it, t isn't far away. Sinnoh may go on the floors by June end or July first week. I never deliver deadlines, so don't back on it XD. One more chapter and we will have Lance, baby! Next chapter is focused on Lucario – a request by a good friend. Some Christmas themes. Some fluff, and the usual Advanceshipping stuff. Damn excited. Speaking of excitement…did people in China hear my scream…cause a Special Preview aired, and I am bustling with anticipation.
The episode this Friday features Iris…Dragonite and Dragonite, Dracovish, Hyper Class on the stake, the mystery if Iris is Unova Champion or not….so much stuff to uncover. Then a Pikacu focused episode. Return of Gary, reunion with Ash's old Pokemon, and not the least, Ash's INFERNAPE returning and taking on a MOLTRES!
Damn! Goh must be feeling so puny right now. The fucker caught an Absol, increasing his roster. Why? Just because he was falling from a cliff, so catching it is the solution for everything? How come no one objects…that Goh catches the Pokemon in such situation whereas Ash puts is own life on the line to save them from poachers or even natural disasters, yet never ends up catching them. See the difference, but also the injustice?
Sorry if I am offending any Goh fan, but actually I never understood him. Even Max and Bonnie, actually even a character of the day as a better dream than this kid. He is infatuated with the powers and secrets of one Pokemon in childhood and now he is on a mission to catch them all till he reaches Mew. Now where is the eligibility criteria to catch Mew you need to have possession of each Pokemon. If this streak continues, this kid will end up introducing disasters to the world. Picture this – a storm arrives in Hoenn, and where's Kyogre…it's in Professor Cerise's park playing with other baby pokemon. Even Lana gave up the idea of catching a Kyogre when she had the chance.
So pokemon wont give Ash, meloetta, victini, latias, zekrom, giratina or solgaleo for 20 years but they will give a rookie trainer who literally turned 10 like 50 episodes ago a fricking suicune, are u trying to piss of all og fans. Legendary Pokemon have been created for a reason…and this fucker doesn't understand it. Besides, I just hate how quickly the pokemon trust him to capture them. He got Sobble, he got Grookey, he got Suicine, and it just keeps rising. Even his starters evolve quickly….The PLOT!
Anyway, enough of Goh bashing. It's not like I am gonna adore the character anywhere soon.
See you next week.
