Yep! Finally the chapter I was so eager to upload is now available! I seemed to almost have reached a mile stone. I have now officially completed writing the Elite Four arc of this series. It took me several months to finish it, but I finally did. Now all the remaining chapters just need to be proofread and uploaded. That adds to a collection of Kanto arc, Johto arc, Hoenn arc and Elite Four saga. Three more to go. Hopefully that means I'll be able to upload a chapters a week until I reach the last one. Definitely expect another update sometime later in the week. I can't believe what started off as just a small tribute to Advanceshipping became a fic as big as this. I had no idea it would gain such popularity. Thank you to everyone from the bottom of my heart for all the support you have given this fic! I know I've lost and gained new readers since I started, but for those of you who were here since the start, I want to shout out to all you! I'll probably say you by name when I post the last chapter. Thank you so much once again!

Now that I'm done, it's time to take a break from writing...err...To start the Sinnoh Region arc!

Ash and Lance's saga battle is here. Please enjoy it…outcome and all whether you wanted Ash or Lance to win. This will be long and I hope this will be the best Ash vs Lance you will read. Nothing to say except please enjoy the chapter!

Tuesday, one day before the Final Match,

The layer covering atmosphere had an aura of brightness as the light flickered through it and reached the surface of Earth, making it a bit scorching. The sun finding its way from horizon to the summit of sky pierced it's lucid sunlight to the people which made their faces plastered with an eerie glow, squinting eyes and glittered demeanor. The birds were soaring high with so much zeal and zest that could bring courage to even a derelict for the search of betterment in his life.

A woman with auburn hair tied in a ponytail hummed, setting down a plate, with napkins and silverware to match. "Thank you, Mimey!" She chimed, accepting a teapot that was set in the center of the dining table, beside a vase of white daisies, their fragrance twisting with the nostalgic, savory scents of a home cooked meal.

"Mime, Mime!" Mimey hummed, wiping the kitchen counter clean with enthusiastic diligence.

"Now, we're all set for-"

A loud knock on the door interrupted Delia's thought, and she clutched her fist over her chest. "Coming~!"

Eagerness beat frightful anticipation to the door, and she turned the knob, pulling open her front door, finding the cheerful faces of Misty and Brock.

"Good Morning, Mrs. Ketchum!" Misty greeted pleasantly.

"Good morning!'' Delia chimed.

"I take it Ash isn't up yet.'' Brock smiled.

"Hmmm…I thought he hasn't come down because he was busy packing….'' Delia buried herself in thought.

Misty sighed, holding up her forehead. ''One..Two…Three…!"

Sure enough, a few seconds later, the bedroom door flung open, a flabbergasted Ash racing down into the hall.

"Mom? You're up early, too," Ash commented.

"It's not early, Ash. Everyone has been awake for a few hours now. It's almost ten o'clock. We thought you hadn't come downstairs yet because you were busy packing," Delia told him.

A look of shock crossed Ash's face as he turned to the clock in his room. "Oh, no! I thought I set my alarm for eight! It didn't go off! I'll get ready!" he rushed back into his bedroom.

May came out of the hall to see Ash restless. It would've been quite comical to see herself. Despite being a peaceful sleeper, Ash had the funniest ways of waking up sometimes. It was then she remembered she wasn't much different herself. There were times when she was dreaming about Ash and mumbling about him right in front of Misty, or there was the time when Cubone whacked her awake with its bone.

By the time Ash was getting occupied in his daily preparations, May and the rest had assembled in the hall, sipping some piping tea to face the day ahead. It was gonna be a huge week in the life of their friend's. They engaged in conversations and banter and the topic was usually Ash. Delia's face went pale, when his adventures were being dug up and all the life risking decisions he took. Soon, they heard footsteps creaking on the stairs, and finally Ash made himself present, dressed casually. He had packed light. May knew that Ash was only going to pack low with the bare essentials like he usually did. Well, at least he was responsible enough to pack his belongings. That's a first. Had he asked his mother for help, Delia would probably embarrass him with trying to pack everything known to mankind.

By the time he'd done so, he looked up to see none other than his mother standing before him. That hardly prepared him for the airtight embrace that followed.

"Ash, honey!" Delia held on for dear life, hiding her face in the shoulder that Pikachu hadn't occupied. "You had me worried sick!" So much for the composure she'd worked so hard to build before his appearance.

"Why? Did I oversleep?"

His friends looked on, their smiles bittersweet.

Ash was silent, this time; no hint gained from their friend's emotions. He'd seen this coming. His only struggle was to breathe in the tight hold he'd been pulled into. "Sorry, Mom." He returned the embrace, careful not to graze the bandage covering his left cheek.

"Pi-pi." Pikachu clung to Ash's head, patting Delia's shoulder with his tail.

After what felt like an eternity, Delia pulled back, wiping her eyes. "I had to embarrass you, this time."

"That's okay, Mom." Ash smiled, hugging her back. "Only you can.''

The mother and son exchanged a look, eyes connected that expressed their love for one another. In that moment, Ash's entire childhood flashed in her eyes. Realizing she was keeping her son waiting, she bribed him to stay a little longer with breakfast.

"Alright; waffles!" Ash took a seat, his mouth watering. "No one makes it like you, Mom." He quickly swallowed, looking awkwardly to Brock. "I mean…"

"Hey, don't look at me next time I burn yours." Brock smirked. Getting a look at Ash's mortified face, he chuckled. "Kidding! Every chef has their specialty. As long as my stews are still your favorite, you haven't broken any hearts, here."

"Unless I meet a soup chef, then, yours are my favorite," Ash teased back, scrunching his nose as he sat down and began to serve himself.

After a moment, Misty snatched the syrup, insisting that he didn't need that much for his waffles. Brock assured May that she didn't need to worry about the sweetness since there was hash browns while Mr. Mime brought Pikachu a bottle of ketchup to put over his rice.

As she dipped a piece of bread into her plate, Delia spoke up. "So, Ash," she began, "be sure to call Clemont. He wanted your advice over something.''

"This early?" Max asked.

"It's early in Kanto. A day behind in Kalos.'' Ash informed, turning to his mother. "Did he specify?''

"Ah!'' Delia poked out her tongue, recalling the conversation she had with her son's business partner. "It was something about two chip, and mechanical analog, and…umm…."

"Wait!" Almost choking on his meal, he dropped the fork down. "Did he say something like schematic of a two-dimensional superconducting qubit chip. The quantum mechanical analog of classical random walks?''

"If you could piece it that way, then yes.'' Delia sweatdropped, the technical terms were never her thing. "He was talking about algorithms.''

"No way,'' Ash pulled himself out of the table and dashed over to search his phone.

"What is that?'' Max called.

"It's a breakthrough in quantum computing technology!'' Ash screamed back, polite enough to answer. "It's quite big!''

"Oh great…" Misty slumped her shoulders. "He's gonna be a robo all the way to Indigo Plateau.''

"Mrs. Ketchum,'' May coughed. "I love your son dearly, but if he reads his vows in Binary language, the wedding's off….''

Sure enough, a moderately-large town was slinking into view down from the valley below. Ash's hands pressed the steering wheel tighter as they gang who were privileged to the larger window of the campervan, gazed in awe at the approaching destination: The Indigo League Plateau. On the slowly-enlarging valley was a quaint town populated by houses, and at the center of all that civilization were the stadiums. Down on the lake was a bridge that attached to the mainland on which was a large white stadium, meant for the finals section of the League, but if you didn't know better you would have mistaken it for a castle. The building was made out of white polished stone and sat in the middle of the plateau. On the top, battlements ran around the entire structure, while a barbican was placed, an arched walk way having been built into it, as an entrance into the stadium.

"There it is!'' Max gasped. ''The Indigo Plateau!''

"Certainly brings back memories…'' May giggled.

"Looks like we beat the Victory Road yet again,'' Misty smirked.

"You don't sound too surprised,'' Max observed.

"Being a Gym Leader, I pop in at Indigo Plateau every now and then.'' She replied.

"It's weird," Brock asked. Misty gave him a skeptic look. "I mean, we're obviously attending to something pretty big, but I can't help but think that we were once part of it the first time we traveled around Kanto together years ago."

"Is that another way to say 'It brings back memories'?'' May deadpanned.

"We're finally here, Pikachu. After all this time, after all the work we've put in, we're back." Ash breathed, almost shakily. It was almost too hard to believe.

"Pi-Pikachu!" Pikachu answered cheerily. The mouse put on a stern face, knowing and welcoming the challenges that awaited them. The road to this point had been hard, in both good ways and bad. But they were here. That had to count for something.

A gentle breeze swept past Ash and Pikachu, ruffling the former's messy black hair, and the former's lightning bolt tail.

Max was practically bouncing in his seat as he saw the Indigo Plateau come into view. The large stadium was off in the distance and surrounded by some small housing districts and hotels for the participants. He could see multiple kiosks and people in the street, no doubt preparing for the tournament's opening festival. On the mainland were other buildings as well. From the main stadium, May could make out four smaller domed structures, those must have been for the preliminaries as they were smaller than the center stadium. Then, she noticed a small set of fenced in dirt fields and wondered what those were for. Deciding not to waste time, she continued to look around the town to see what else was on it. Directly behind the main stadium appeared to be a large Pokemon Center, probably filled with enough Nurse Joys to help out over the next week plus. Finally, not too far from the Center, she noticed hundreds of small square houses. All of them had been built out of the same stone that the main stadium was and the whole island created a picture of a medieval era.

They soon found a parking spot, which was a challenge in itself, as the plateau was packed with fans and spectators. Being lucky to be in a campervan, the League had separate parking for that. Once, when the engine was off, the gang had already gathered their belongings, clamouring like baby birds to explore out. Ash alighted the van from the driver's seat, and a colossal E-Billboard came into his view atop a building, where his and Lance's features were displayed for the main event.

Ash's friends trickled in one by one to be as close to his side as they could, ending up standing in a sideline, watching the same preview of the matches. Ash flicked a glance to his side, recognizing May. He carefully interlocked his fingers with hers, getting her attention. They didn't speak; the message was clear: he was happy that she was here with him. And all the rest of his friends, too. With them all at his side, he knew he could conquer anything. And that feeling swelled up inside him to the point where it threatened to spill out of him. His pulse racing with anticipation, Ash decided he'd let it. Damn what anyone else thought.

And so, he looked to the heavens, not caring who heard him.

"Get ready, Pokémon world! We're gonna prove that we're the best there is!"

"Pi-kachu!"

Ash and Pikachu strayed well ahead of the rest of their group, bolting straight for township where they could arrive in the hotel they had booked accommodations in. Ash and Pikachu slowed as they exited the main areas of the town, staring in wonder at what they saw. They stood in a huge clearing with neatly-cut grass and well-kept cobblestone paths. In the center of the massive clearing was a great circular stadium that glowed in the evening sunlight. Three smaller stadiums formed a triangle around the bowl, but this central stadium was the king. The last time he'd been inside on that field was when Ash was handed his defeat due to one certain dragon's arrogance, but also the time when he had come rooting for May. This time, neither Ash nor Pikachu had any such plans to go home empty-handed.

The others caught up to them, skidding to a stop when they saw Ash standing still as he looked at the stadium. They'd expected him to keep going without them.

"Just look at the size…'' Max marveled. "80000 seating capacity. Someday I'll be batting inside too…hopefully against you Ash. "

"You bet, Max.''

"And I'll be cheering my boys the whole way…'' May giggled.

"Hey guys, it's edging to 1 pm. Let's find our hotel and cool off." Misty whined. ''Plus I am hungry too.''

"Relax Misty,'' Ash assured with a wink. ''We are just heading over. There's no need for the registration, so we all have plenty of time.''

The hike led them up a pass to a set of stairs ascending a great hill, where the Village served as its own little subdivision. Dozens of small, private homes littered the hill, surrounding the on-site Pokémon Center. It was a recent addition to the island, built so that all competing Trainers could stay in an area separate from the rest of the town. The tall hill overlooked the coastal town to the south and the stadiums to the east, while an uncharted expanse of forested and mountainous terrain stretched for who knows how long on the north side.

"Man this place looks swamped…'' May complained.

"They must be hard at work getting provisions for the League. They look a bit shorthanded." Max agreed.

The Siblings weren't kidding. Many of the assistants were doing their best to carry in loads of medical supplies and equipment, and they weren't having the best go at it. There were even some Trainers waiting in line that were getting upset with how long things were taking.

"Told you we should've arrived earlier,'' Misty slumped her shoulders. "How do you expect us to get a room here?''

"We ain't taking up a room in the Pokemon Center,'' Ash refuted. "I got us a separate villa till this League is behind us. All facilities and services available." He held out a key.

The girls lit up with bright smiles. "We knew you would do something like that…You chose our safety over the basic rooms didn't you?''

"No, I just don't like staying in Pokemon Center.''

The girls faces fell.

"This is our hotel room?" May gasped as they entered the small two storey villa. Located in the valleys of the plateau at a half a mile distance from the main town, was a secured gated residence community of luxurious villas.

"This place is ten times nicer than the hotel we got last time we were here," Misty stated as she looked around the house. "Why would anyone need a hotel room this big?"

Ash laughed as the gang entered the residence. It wasn't the first time, but he learned that every League he competed in had different lodging. "The League committee reserves these rooms for executive VIPs.. This is their biggest event of the year. I heard Cynthia stayed here once."

"The Sinnoh Champion Cynthia?!'' Misty doubled over.

"No, my aunt Cynthia…'' Ash jabbed.

"That's a pretty secure stay for celebrities," Brock stated as he placed his bag in one of the bedrooms and came back to the living room. He was infatuated with the kitchen interior."The majority of the League's income does come from the League each year. It would only make sense to reward the trainers somehow."

They took a seat in the royal couches, their bottoms as if touched something soft. "Amazing!''

"Ash, are you always used to live lavishly like this?'' Misty quizzed.

"Not much,'' Ash thought for an answer. "But wherever I stay, I splurge extensively for comfort.''

"I wish I had your kind of money,'' Misty whined. "The League has grew strict on our payroll.''

"I told you, hold the shares of Aspexx, and you will be a millionaire years from now on.'' Ash sighed. ''But of course, why would you listen to me?''

"You have to pay extra for food and snacks in the fridge?'' May asked, retrieving a pack of chips.

"No, it's came with the house,'' Ash answered. "The best part is they give you this card," he mewled, flashing what looked to be a credit card with a Pokéball logo on the front. "Everything is free for a League Champion.''

"Enough about all this money talk, I'm bored," Max stated. "Let's go do something fun."

"Well, I as planning to call up Clemont and finish up on that presentation on that cubic chip," Ash explained as he pulled a chair out from the table and sat on it. "He won't be able to write the codes alone.''

"In what universe is that fun?'' Misty pouted, slumping on a recliner.

"Ash," May sweetly gained his attention. ''Is it too much to ask to do that some other time?''

"No May,'' Ash's hand stopped from sliding the zip from his laptop bag. "I need to submit it a week after New Year. I get it. I'll work on it some other time. What do you guys want to do?" he pushed the laptop back in the bag.

"I was thinking maybe we should head out for some special training!'' Max's beamed. "After all you won't get very far if you don't got the skills to pay the bills!"

"That is on my list, but I also have a meeting scheduled with Charles Goodshow and I have to inspect the field. You can join me Max!''

"And what do you expect us to do?'' Misty drawled. ''Don't tell me we came all the way just to cheer you on…wait, a day I can do anything and I don't have to be with you…May come on, let's hit the malls!''

Grumped at Misty, Ash was about to say something until Brock sensed it and dove in. ''We can train and have a boys night too Ash!''

"Hey!'' Max cheered, picking up the guidebook he was perusing. ''There are some exhibition matches too! We gotta check that out!''

"Sounds fair, but…" A loud rumble from Ash's belly alerted everyone to silence. "So as my stomach was saying, let's get some grub and then we can decide what we wanna do!''

"Before we head out,'' Brock raised a finger. "Which room did Cynthia bunked in?''

Indigo Village was crowded and lively. In the outdoor seating area of a sports bar, our heroes unwound. The aroma had made Ash's and Pikachu's mouth water immediately. As Ash looked around, it appeared that many trainers here had almost as big an appetite as he did. Their plates were piled high, and they were really chowing down. Ash tossed a boneless chicken wing in his mouth as he watched the broadcast covering some of the top picks for next year's conference winners. Max sipped a frothy glass of something that was decidedly not orange juice, while Brock opted for a beer given that he was eldest the group. May, meanwhile, gushed to Misty about some of the arresting attractions of women and their Coordinator merchandise.

"Awesome!'' Max chomped on another bite. ''I am so used to being o the road, I can't remember the last time I ate something that came out of a wrapper! Food here is great!''

"Eat all you want!'' Misty chuckled at Max's gimmick. "The League facility is pretty well funded, so get well fed!''

"Reminds me of Misty's chili, she made it so spicy, it burns you twice and your need a water type to douse you out!'' Ash laughed at his own joke.

"Hey!'' the redhead punched a dent in his head. ''That was a low blow. Dissing the chef's four alarm special!''

"Four alarm?'' Ash argued. "You are on the low side. Keep counting."

"It's been long since I saw so many different cuisines for dinner!" May gushed. "Kanto really is on the cutting edge of keeping its tourists happy, huh? And also there are so many items I wish to buy! All of those stuff would look good on me in a contest!"

"Hey," Max cheered. "You wanna reenter Contests! Super cool May!"

Misty nodded. "I get what you mean! It's hard to use items that don't fit properly. I think it's a good investment, especially since it'll look good in a contest!"

"Just a warning: the Christmas sale ends today," Brock warned. "And there's a possibility all the stock will be gone. However, if you want something that isn't in the store, you have to place an order. But you can't mail it to the League address since we are here only for two days."

"That's true," May mumbled. She looked to Ash. "What do you think, Ash? You think he'd ship it to your mom's house? Would your mom mind if I shipped it to her house?"

Snapping out of his intense watching of the sports cast, Ash blinked. "Huh? Oh! Nah. Mom'd love to help out! Just let her know if you do order it so she can call us when it gets there!" With that, the trainer went back to watching the program. He furrowed his brows. There was a preview of Lance's latest battle against Wallace of Hoenn, where Dragonite's might had just overpowered Milotic with a Hyper Beam.

"Pika…"

"Don't worry Pikachu," Ash smiled, handing the mouse a sausage. "We came ready, and we are taking the gold where it belongs."

Lance's trainer portrait showed up on the screen, with the six tiles of his most powerful Pokemon – Aerodactyl, Kingdra, Charizard, Flygon, Gyarados and finally Dragonite.''

"That's a team I wouldn't wanna face,'' Max gulped.

"And you think why you haven't made an identity yet,'' May scoffed.

Ash eyed the portrait, drinking in the information provided.

"It's good to scout the competition,'' Brock encouraged.

"Yeah, just trying to see if there's anyone that really sticks out. I know that Dragonite and Gyarados were on this list, but I know what I need to know about Lance already," Ash said. He ate again, this time with just a little more aggressiveness.

Brock's eyes narrowed as he scanned his best friend. He silently felt the fluctuations in the boy's confidence, rising his suspicions, "That's smart. It's always best to study your competition so that you can be prepared."

The doctor suddenly leaned in, staring at Ash and ensuring the man could see him out of his peripheral vision, "This is giving you a bit of cold feet isn't it? You are scared of losing."

Ash tensed, and then relaxed, sighing, "…Am I really that easy to read?"

"Only a little bit." Brock answered quickly. Ash groaned.

"The struggle's gonna be real hard this time. And for the first time, I don't have all the answers,'' Ash held out a pokeball and stared the capsule hard. ''Wonder how dad did it. I really wish he were here now.''

"You can't afford to make the same mistakes you did,'' Misty bit. ''Elite Four was tough and you could have been tide out anytime, but Lance is the big boss man. You have to be prepared anywhere anytime anyhow.''

"Sometimes you can be a real downer.'' Brock jibbed.

"I just have to be the voice of the reason.'' Misty defended.

"Voice of the reason?'' May butt in, displeased with Misty's statement, fearing the gym leader's belief in her boyfriend had waivered. "Cut the man some slack! He is here after all odds and challenges, end of story!"

"Hey come on!" Ash hushed both the girls down. ''No one's jamming the buzzer beater on this one, cause you both gals are right! I need a bit of skepticism with optimism!"

"I think he's right,'' Misty sighed. "Sorry May, I didn't mean to down him.''

"It's true that my matches here were squat, but after any takedown it's the rebound skills that make it sweet or sour…Brock, order me a sweet and sour potatoes,….I have already got my mojo back in the groove, and I am gonna so and smash em on those moguls!''

"That's the spirit!'' Max cheered.

"Why don't we finish gobbling up and check out the stadium?'' May suggested. "Maybe you'll learn something.''

"I see where you are going,'' Max agreed. "Hey, you can learn something from the archives too! You can learn Lance's secrets for a change.''

"Way to go little brother….''

"Nahh…" Ash held a hand out in front of the siblings. "I have you all with me. I am gonna keep the battle spontaneous. I don't need to go through the archives…That''s what he'll just expect me to do.''

"So what's the plan?'' Misty asked, slicing a baby corn.

"A day full of training now, a day full of rest tomorrow….just the old school!'' Ash pumped his fist. "That will be all we need. Come on, Max!''

"Sweet!'' Both energetic men along with Pikachu, scampered away from the table, and took off in the street.

"Hey, come back here!'' Misty hollered. "You have got the credit card that makes the food bill free! We are not paying for this! Ash Ketchum, you are a dead man!''

He sat a large rock, conveniently flat, close to the heart of the small forest. Not many Trainers had the time or effort to explore deep into such parts for one reason or another. It didn't matter to him as it made things easier for him to not deal with people.. He just couldn't deal with distractions right now and Max's heavy breathing was being one, which was particularly the reason why he chose to rough it alone. Humans were such complex creatures, it was annoying. Pokémon, however, had been a different story for him.

Aside from letting his own team enjoy some fresh air outside of their Pokéball, a few wild Pokémon now and then would pass by and give a salutation to him since his traits were kind. It may have had something to do with his own unique gifts that were talked about at seldom points from his previous travels, but he hadn't shown much interest in mastering aura to the point of becoming an archetype figure known as the Aura Guardian. He stayed firm on his dream to becoming the best that ever was in the art of Pokémon battling.

"Pikapi!" a Pikachu called out to him.

He stood up and went over to his long-time friend to reunite with the rest of their team. Play time was finished and now it was time to train once more. Max stood alongside Sawk one side while Ash's Tyranitar on the other.

A few minutes later,

"And now, Breaking Swipe!''

Swiping its purple tail right across the karate expert, the gargantuan sent Sawk flying away, making him thud against the forest floor.

"No!'' Max recalled his Pokemon back, scoffing. ''I don't stand a chance against you.''

"Don't get frustrated Max,'' Ash smiled. "It takes time to get good.''

"Wonder I'll be ever good as you.'' Max sulked.

"You not gonna like the answer,'' Ash chuckled sheepishly.

Just as Max was gonna snort back at the elder, there was an unmistakable call for a Pokémon attack in the distance followed by a loud rumble.

"Did you guys hear that?" Max gasped, interest immediately piqued. "What was that?''

"Let's go find out.''

Sure enough, they started sprinting, the only source was the sound where the commotion had come from. They exited a clearing, and took the road down from the forest, finding themselves on the bank of a lake. They weren't alone, as a young boy, roughly the age of ten, stood in a battling stance in behind a floating Beldum. The boy seemed like a rookie, having only been a two weeks of Trainer, at the bottom of a career. He had a yellow cap atop his head, the visor drawn back just like Ash in the old days. He wore simple clothes, a red Tshirt, with the picture of Gastly evolutionary line. Black pants and clean grey tennis shoes served as his bottoms.

Facing them was a stubborn and hubristic Poliwrath, who was obviously disturbed from his slumber.

His piercing blue eyes glinted as he called out for another attack. "Beldum, Take Down!" Beldum obeyed, zooming across the air with otherworldly speed to attack the toad heavyweight.

But the fighting type was equally vigilant, holding his hands out.

"It's gonna use Circle Throw!'' Max's eyes gawked. "Hey!'' he screamed out to the lad. "Ask your Beldum to pull back!''

"What?'' the boy mused, wondering where the two men had come from. He understood what the geek meant, when the muscle powered Poliwrath grabbed the rod of Beldum by a hard clutch, and swung it into a spin, ending it with a brutal crash against the floor.

"Beldum!'' the boy screamed, bolting for his Pokemon, who lay groaning upon crash.

Poliwrath furrowed his brows, and took a dive into the water, with a warning.

"I'm so sorry Beldum,'' the boy whimpered.

"Bel…." The Iron Ball's Pokemon eye smiled, wouldn't wanting its trainer to lose hope.

"Hey, is your Beldum alright?" Max hurried, reaching out to the boy first, Ash skidding to a stop later.

"Yeah…I guess,'' the boy exhaled, returning Beldum. "Boy, that's one hard fish to catch.''

"Yeah, toads are relatable." Ash smirked, thinking of his Palpitoad.

"It…wait…'' the boy's face struck white as if he had seen a ghost. Was the man really behind this geek be the one they are talking about…."Hey! It's you!''

The boy was filled with exuberance, he shove Max aside, spurting closer to Ash, with sparkling worshipping eyes. "It's you, Ash Ketchum! The Hero of Kanto!''

"Hero of Kanto?'' Ash repeated, gawking at the way of addressing.

"Yeah, you got mugshots in the paper, you just like a Hollywood star!'' the boy continued, with starry eyes. "You are so famous the guys back home get your face as tattoo!''

"Hey, now now!" Max clapped, "That's too much..''

"Hey,'' Ash whined. "Chill out! Let me savor fifteen minutes of fame!'' Ash laughed.

"Yeah! This place has gone nuts ever since I arrived! It's raining Ash Ketchum everywhere!''

"This is sweet,'' Ash flustered. ''I am a celebrity for what I wanted to be.''

"Oh I am sorry, I forgot to introduce myself.'' The boy face flushed with embarrassment. ''I am Anthony from Goldenrod City!''

"Not that you asked, but I am Max Maple,'' Max flatly introduced, disappointed in the boy's manners.

"Nice to meet you, Anthony,'' Ash held out a hand. "This is Pikachu.''

"Pika!'' the mouse gave a two finger salute.

"It's an honor to meet you, Ash!'' the boy beamed.

"Sounds great,'' Ash smiled. ''So what's your deal, Anthony.''

"I just got my Trainer's license a month ago, and flew down to Kanto, after Professor Elm's advice that I could learn a lot about Pokemon in this region,'' the boy began. ''I got my Beldum from my elder brother, and with my choice of Chikorita, I started to take on the Gyms, but the Pewter City gym was too hard for me. The gy called Forrest would sass me about my amateurism. I couldn't stand a chance against him twice, but then I heard on the news that you had just finished defeating the Last Elite Four, Mistress Karen and would now appear in the Indigo League. I am a huge fan of yours Ash, and I would never miss any of your battles, so I took the road and came to Indigo Plateau four days ago to see your final battle. I wasn't strong enough to take the Victory Road Challenge so I took the high mountain path and got here with great difficulty. I heard stories of many powerful Pokemon reside here, and went on to catch a water type that could help me against Forrest, and then I saw that Poliwrath take on any water types all at once. I just had to get that Poliwrath but so far, I haven't got even close.''

"Seems like that Poliwrath is a classic playground bully,'' Max hummed, looking at the surface of the water.

"And he has hacked my Pokemon thrice,'' Anthony whimpered.

"Your Pokemon meant a lot to you, don't they?'' Ash grinned, placing a gloved hand atop the child's shoulder.

"Of course, I love them!''

"Then gear up, kiddo.'' Ash pumped his fist. ''I'll help you catch that Poliwrath, no matter what!''

Max sighed. "How does he end up getting involved in these things?''

"You serious?'' Anthony gasped. ''You'll help me?''

"I ain't doing anything pretty much today,'' Ash winked with a thumps held up. "I'll even show you some of my pokemon!''

"Hey, good idea!'' Max adjusted his glasses. "We could use some play time and get tuned. A little training never hurt anyone.''

"Yeah, now let's harness your Pokemon so they do some serious damage,'' Ash turned around, signaling both the generations to follow him. A short trek later, they arrived into the depths of the evergreen forest, where the mountain air was fresh and pure.

"Ah,'' Ash spread his arms. ''This is so soothing,'' he took a deep breath.

Immediately, Anthony mimicked his icon, getting a sniff. ''you're right. I love it.''

"Are we supposed to train here?'' Max bemused.

"You'll find soon enough,'' Ash bent, stretching his muscles all good. Pikachu mirrored him too.

"Well, seeing that there's not much to do around here,'' Max joined them too.

"Should we scout the place more to get a clear spot?'' Anthony scratched his chin.

"How about to put Max through his paces?" Ash straightened up, turning around. ''You got any Pokemon that's peppy now?''

"Yeah, I would like to see what you got?'' Max's grin widened. Ash's biggest fan, he says.

"…zzzz….aw…And I wanted to tan by the lake…." RotomDex hovered up.

"Yeah actually,'' Anthony took out a shining Pokeball . "I still got my Sentret."

"Okay then, Anthony,'' Max held out a Pokeball. "Time to see your stuff.''

"Ready!'' the boy nodded, galloping back to create a distance for the battle. ''Give it your best shot…ummm…''

Max eyes drooped. ''Max…''

"Yeah…Max! Don't hold back okay!''

"Trainers, choose your Pokemon!'' Ash sliced the air with his hand.

"This is all I will need," Max smirked as he skillfully tossed the Pokéball in the air before yelling, "Let's go Accelgor!''

Materializing out from the lights of the capsule, the stoic bug type pouted, its arms crossed to portray his aggressive mood.

"Alright Sentret!'' The boy dusted off his red shirt, tilted down the brim of his yellow hat, then turned it backwards, taking one of the Pokeballs from his belt, which got a double-take from Ash. The furry rabbit made an appearance, gleeful at first, but the look of the ninja in front wasn't very welcoming.

"That's stuff ain't for the take, you know,'' Ash sighed.

"You can have the first move,'' Max allowed.

"Thanks," Anthony smirked. "Sentret, Quick Attack!''

Sentret nodded, propping off its tail to bolt at breakneck speed towards the Accelgor.

"Dodge it!'' Max countered.

Known for its agility, the two ribbon like extensions behind it fluttered with the winds, and the Shell Out Pokemon leaped, evading a crash.

"Rain Dance!'' Max threw a hand out.

"ACCELLLGORRR!'' the bug type screamed, chucking a soft ball of water in the air. The clouds were arranged as neatly as child's toys, scattered over blue, content to drift where they fell. The air was cooler, the colours less vivid, tucked beneath the woolen grey sky. And finally arrived the unexpected gift of rain, drenching the lives present. Max stirs behind his closed eyelids, his mind ceasing dream-mode to bring him back to wakefulness. Ash pulled down his hood and shook his hair to gain some life back into his flattened locks.

"Very Good, Max,'' Ash smiled. "Using Rain Dance will only benefit Accelgor's ability, Hydration.''

"The ball's in my court, Max!'' Anthony smirked. "It was hard training Sentret for this move, but in the end, we did it. Sentret, Thunderbolt!''

"Sent!'' the rabbit agreed, sizzling its furs. Golden sparks flickered from its body.

"Accelgor, quick use Acid Armor!'' Max gasped.

Blinding, golden bolts crashed on the dirt where Accelgor stood, tearing the ground apart. Still haven't mastered the move, the normal type felt its muscles losing vitality and became dizzy. Accelgor had just vanished, liquidefying itself in the rain.

"Hey, where did it go?'' Anthony mused, scanning all over the field.

"No need for more suspense,'' Max smirked. ''Accelgor, show yourself and use Water Shuriken!''

"…gor!'' Anthony staggered, watching the Shell Out Pokemon become visible to the lights, slapping its hands together to form twin shuriken shaped water.

"Oh no! Sentret watch out!''

"Too late!'' Max jested, ''Accelgor, now!''

The stoic bug type hurled the sharp masses of water, their power supplemented with Rain Dance, upon the wobbling Sentret.

The normal type shrieked, the impact of the move sailed the pokemon through the floor, crashing with a damning smack. The battle's result was clear.

"That's enough!'' Ash raised his arms into the air. "Looks like Max is the winner!''

"That was fun," Max leaned down at his Accelgor, recalling him.

"gor!'' the shelled bug folded its arms, heat of the beam recalling it back.

"Oh man,'' Anthony frowned, safey returning Sentret. "I am sorry Sentret. I let you down always.''

"Hey don't say that,'' Ash approached the downed boy. "That was awesome. Your Sentret was super cool, but it just needs a little tuning up.''

"I keep saying that,'' Anthony sighed. ''But when I see my Pokemon losing, I can't help but pity them. They work so hard…just for me, and I haven't helped them gain a win yet. I am a total loser.''

"Don't be so hard on yourself, kiddo.'' Ash smiled. "I have been in your spot way many times. When I set out from my town, I thought I was gonna be the best Pokemon Master ever. You have no idea how many times I messed up."

"Mr. Ash,'' Anthony hummed. "What inspired you to become a Pokemon Master?''

Ash was astonished. No one had asked him that question before, but its not like he didn't have an answer. Taking a seat upon a log, Ash sat next to the boy. Both of them stared into the sky at a flock of Taillows.

"Growing up in Pallet Town fueled my dream already. My dad was from the same town as well. Growing up, I saw many kids training with their pet Pokemon, having the time of their lives, battling each other. And I thought, man, I never seen anything so wicked. I was a pain in my mother's neck over this. I would pester her to buy me Bulbasaur, Squirtle and Charmander toys, and even send fan mail. I wanted to find out everything there was to know about Pokemon. And then when I became a Trainer, and got Pikachu (scratching Pikachu's chin) we set out on our journeys. We faced hardships many times, fell down multiple times. I screwed up over and over, but I learned from my mistakes. They only made me and my Pokemon stronger, and all we did was practice all over again, every waking minute!''

"Wow…you make failures sound so good.'' Anthony marveled.

"It's because they are." Ash giggled, ruffling the child's hair. "They bring you and your Pokemon closer. They make you work harder, and perform better. And most importantly, you learn the value of never giving up.''

"That's right!'' Anthony bobbed his head. "Your secret is to never give up!''

"Glad you catch quick,'' Ash leaned back, staring up at the sky, watching the clouds form over.

"Mr. Ash!" the boy pleaded, as if he was making a wish to a God. "Please help me train Will you take me under your wing?''

"Hey, cool you jets now.'' Max objected, but stopped as Ash held out a hand.

Sliding his arm over the feeble shoulder of Anthony, Ash pinched his cheek, smiling. "Anthony, you know in my journeys, I met a lot of people, even the Elite Fours, and the Champions. They all had different tips and advises, but none of them worked on a battlefield. Each trainer is on his own, when his Pokemon battles for him."

'Huh?''

"In this world, every face is different, every personality is, every identity is, even the DNA in you is.'' Ash chuckled. ''Just like that, every trainer's ideals are different. My training won't help you when you will be fighting your most important battle, nothing will help you, but you yourself. You need to believe in your own beliefs, and make your Pokemon work accordingly. Don't try to be another 'Ash Ketchum'; try to be the 'Anthony' this world will remember.''

The words were like an awakening for the young boy. He put the pieces together, and quickly realized that this man was absolutely right. Leading one's own way is much better than following someone's path already walked on.

"Thanks for the words' Mr. Ash!'' Anthony remarked.

"Now, let's shape you up for this region!'' Ash uplifted the boy's lost spirits. "You said you wanted to catch that Poliwrath for Pewter City Gym, right? But is that all Poliwrath's gonna be useful for? It will be more helpful in Cerulean Gym considering its' Water Absorb ability. Always think pragmatic – a step ahead.''

"I didn't think of that!''

"Number two – look for the solution. If you are adamant to catch that Poliwrath, think strategically. Don't challenge it with one Pokemon all at once. Use Teamwork!''

"Teamwork?''

"And three- work on your Pokemon's moves. Ultimately, they are gonna help you take the cake.''

"That's right. Sentret knows Thunderbolt, Chikorita can use Vine Whip and Razor Leaf, and Beldum…it only knows Take Down and Iron Defense.''

"Probably why that Poliwrath knows all your tricks!'' Ash smiled, finding the fault in the plan. "Hey Rotom, formulize the data and see what moves Beldum can learn.''

"…zzz…..working…..working…..Beldum can learn Zen Headbutt and Iron Head!''

"There you go." Ash spread his arm, pointing at the floating device. ''We'll help your Pokemon reconfigure their movesets.''

"Thanks!''

"So get ready Anthony, and you too Max!'' Ash turned to them both. ''Let's practice in the art of accuracy!''

"So where are we going?'' Max cocked a brow.

"To the Victory Road!'' Ash held up a thump, cheekily grinning.

Anthony gleefully saw that after a short ride on some of Ash's larger team members who could fly like Dragonite and Pidgeot, they'd reach the foothills that soon jutted into sheer cliffs before Indigo Plateau. A somewhat tall mountain greeted them, beset on all sides by several more mountains that covered the northern half of the mainland .Honestly, it looked no more threatening than Mt. Moon or the Seafoam Islands. The group knew better by now to know that looks can be deceiving.

"This cave inside is home to some of the toughest Pokémon and the toughest terrain this side. Now don't worry about taking on the Pokemon inside Anthony,'' Ash assured. ''I got your back.''

"Yeah,'' Anthony nodded.

"We'll train a bit too,'' Max pumped up.

"Pi-Pikachu!" agreed the mouse.

"You ready?'' Ash tousled Anthony's hair.

"You bet!''

Beyond the blackened entrance was all-new territory, and neither of the three Trainers knew what to expect.

"Well, no time like the present, right, Pikachu?" Ash said optimistically. Pikachu agreed, and they stepped up, followed closely by Max and Anthony. There'd be a narrow bottleneck at the beginning of the cave after the reception area, but soon they'd be on an adventure with just the four of them!

Victory Road was dark.

Victory Road had nothing. Well, the group could see a little bit, but nowhere near as well as they would like. They would need to be extra careful. If there was a sudden pit, they wouldn't see it coming.

As if to emphasize this point, Max tripped over a rock sticking up from nowhere and fell flat on his stomach. He groaned in and looked at the offending rock before discovering it was actually a Geodude. It gave an annoyed expression at Max before hopping off.

"Hey, dude. You alright?" Ash asked as he helped him to his feet.

"Yeah. I'll be fine. I don't think I'm bleeding anywhere," Max whined, as he dusted himself off. "I know Victory Road is full of wild Geodudes, but I hope they aren't going to be all over the main path like that one."

"Ack! I can't see anything in here!" Anthony complained. Any semblance of light was lost just a few feet inside the mountain cave.

A flashlight flicked on, illuminating the path. The flashlight was nestled in Ash's hand, and he shook his head before taking the lead.

"Oh, right." Anthony apologized, swinging his backpack over his right shoulder and rifling through it. He had remembered to pack a flashlight of his own, and he flicked the switch once he slipped it out of the bag to add another cone of light into the dark cave. The two bright beams of light kept the cave decently lit. Now armed with three flashlights, the three Trainers afforded a glance around the mountain cave. They were in a small chamber inside the mountain. Several tunnels branched out of the chamber, likely heading through the rest of the mountain as well as the neighboring ones. The silence inside the cave was almost eerie, but it was regularly broken by what could only be the sounds of wild Pokémon rummaging around.

"Alright, we stop here!'' Ash alarmed them, halting in one place. Max and others stopped walking too.

"Why did we stop here Ash?'' Anthony blinked, everything was now pitch black.

"Because now we are far into this cave, and…me and Max are going back.'' The man coldly stated.

"What!" Anthony couldn't believe what he was hearing. "What about me?''

"You'll stay here,'' Ash turned around, a cold stare stinging into Anthony's worried eyes.

"Ash, he's just a child.'' Max interjected, believing it was a strain on the boy.

"He wants to grow stronger,'' Ash reasoned, pulling out three Pokeballs. ''Here, use my Pokemon. But only for emergencies. And return them to me once you make out of this cave.''

"Ash please,'' the boy begged. "Don't leave me alone, in this cave.''

"Nope,'' Ash declined. "Go ahead, this way leads to the exit. You'll encounter many Pokemon on the way. One mistake, and you're toast. So when you battle them, fight for survival, otherwise you're stuck here without a second chance.''

"You're kidding me!'' Anthony retorted. "I have been Trainer for a month and you leave me alone in a cave full of dangers! I am gonna report you to Officer Jenny!"

"Yeah, yeah! Whatever, just return my Pokemon safely to me.'' Ash flatly whistled, taking off along with Max, leaving Anthony alone, quaking in the dark. He turned around, trying to find a trace of their presence, but he just heard their footsteps disappearing inch by inch into the darkness until even the beam of his flashlight couldn't be seen.

"I shouldn't have spoken to him that way,'' Anthony huffed. ''He knows what he is doing. He left three of his Pokemon with me, means I will get to see him again. I should be on my way."

And so he went, heading straight into the middle tunnel. The narrow path wasn't a long one, and it reopened into a much larger chamber than the one he'd never seen before. Along the walls, iron lanterns were staked into the rock, offering just enough light that the flashlight was no longer necessary. After that, the next thing Anthony noticed was the endlessly changing terrain. All across the chamber, the ground rose up in formations about twice his height (and oftentimes more). Several paths weaved back and forth around the chamber, interconnecting with each other and producing a maze.

The trek took him everywhere, jumping on and off the trail to wander through adjacent caves. He crossed the gaps between the many rock formations via several crudely-built wooden bridges. All the while, the occasional wild Pokémon would cross their path before retreating or disappearing deeper within the caves.

A low growl was heard, and he stopped immediately, hand ready to draw the Pokeball. Anthony chewed on his lip for a second.

Standing before him was a toned, well built Machop that blocked his way forward, and it was clear it wasn't just casually in the area like a Geodude. He knew exactly what he was doing. He was facing forward with very determined stares, almost like statue.

"Hey, Machop!" Anthony greeted, trying to be more friendly towards the fighting type. "Will you please let me through? We need to get to the Indigo Plateau!"

"Chop," the chop Pokemon shook its head, message with a strong 'NO!'. It then pointed forward with its index finger, signaling that the boy turn back the other way.

"Well, so much for training,'' Anthony suspired. ""It's probably not the best idea to get involved in a pointless fight with Machop. I don't think any of my Pokemon can stand a chance against him! Gotta try another way!"

He slid his backpack off his shoulder, and fished out something wrapped from it. Tearing of the wrapper, he offered the blue fighting type a chocolate. "Hey, you want some? This is good!"

Machop wasn't pleased, but snatched the candy from Anthony anyway.

"There you go,'' Anthony grinned. "Keep enjoying.''

While Machop savored the chocolate, Anthony dashed off to the exit where Machop stood guard, only for the Superpower Pokemon flip to an obstacle in his path again, this time angry and in a defensive stance.

"Alright,'' Anthony frowned. ''Guess, there's no other way.''

Pulling out a Pokeball, Anthony lobbed it. ''Chikorita, come on out!''

The brilliant light lit up the cave for a few seconds, as the grass type appeared, relishing the air out of its Pokeball. "Chiko!''

"Chikorita! Quick use Sweet Scent!''

"Chiko Chiko!'' Fanning the leaf atop its head, Chikorita released a sweet fragrance that wafted the stench of the cavern, letting Machop's guard down.

"Vine Whip!'' Anthony rushed.

Two tendrils from Chikorita's neck launched and slapped the Superpower Pokemon, whiplashes strong and punishing. Realizing his dominion no longer stood over the young boy, who retaliated in rebellion, the Machop fled.

"Now!'' Anthony hurried, and picked up the antsy grass type, and ran past the spot where Machop had fled, fearing it was crying out for help. Out of the range and possibility of engaging a horde of muscle powered Pokemon, Anthony could hear lots of bellowing behind him and let out a sigh of relief, that he had passed it through.

He breathed in and out both quickly and heavily, a rush of euphoria soon washing over him. "That was close.''

Finally, Anthony reached an especially tall formation of rock deep within the cave. A long line of well-carved grooves jutted out of the rock face in front of him, traversing the entire height of the formation up to the top.

Anthony thought for a second. ''Looks like we have to climb there ourselves, Chikorita.''

"Chiko!'' the Leaf Pokemon cried, squirming out of his arms. Releasing two tendrils atop the rock, Chikorita easily lifted itself up, and then caring enough to use the same vines for its trainer, pulling the young underweight child up.

"Hey, good thinking!'' Anthony praised his starter.

Standing up, Anthony mused. "Wonder how long this cave is? Just hope we don't camp in here tonight.''

"Chiko chiko!'' the grass type gained his attention.

Anthony tilted his head, looking to where Chikorita was pointing at. His eyes fell on a decently-sized reservoir, nestled in between two risen platforms made of ancient rock. The crystal-clear water shimmered, remaining perfectly still and unburdened by any disturbances.

"Wow…" Anthony gasped, "Who would expect to find a reservoir this deep inside of a mountain? Where could all of this water even be coming from?"

Anthony knelt down and placed his hands on the cold rock, concentrating. His senses expanded, his mind's eye guiding him as he carefully visualized everything underground as if it were a schematic.

"Amazing…" Anthony commented, his eyes still closed.

"Chiko!''

Anthony opened his eyes, spotting Chikorita at the lake's edge. The Leaf Pokemon dipped down and flicked out his tongue, taking a sample of the lake's water to drink. Almost immediately, Chikorita chimed and cherished the water, quickly dipping to get more fluids down its throat.

"…Must be the fresh mountain water." Anthony observed. He rubbed the back of his head as he watched Chikorita, before snickering as he watched the grass type merrily dunking its head.

He approached the edge of the reservoir, taking handful of water and splashing on his face.

"Whaddya say we take a quick break here, eh, Chikorita?" Anthony asked.

"Chiko!'' the Leaf Pokemon nodded at the suggestion. This would be a perfect rest stop!

Anthony tore off the wrapping from another candy, biting into it and quickly chewing it. The chocolate wasn't the appropriate snack, but depleting his other resources wasn't the best act for now.

"Chiko Chiko!'' the exhilarant grass type tossed its neck, releasing multiple sharp leaves, destroying a boulder, making two Geodudes flee, passing curses.

"Hey, looks like special training is paying off!'' Anthony applauded. The grass type seemed to positively glow at the praise, a bounce in her step forming when it was known that her hard work was worthwhile. Especially in Anthony's eyes. "Chiko!" Despite the reflexive urge to nuzzle against her trainer, Chikorita opted to continue walking, tired and eager to return to their accommodation. Today had been rather tiring.

The low batting of wings and high-pitched chatter soon caught their notice, their eyes turning toward the mouth to one of the more narrow parts of the cave. A number of figures swooped out of the shadows, circling the group. Shrieks and swipes urged them all to take a more defensive posture, ducking under vicious assaults before finally getting a good look at their assailants. "It's a bunch of Zubat!" Anthony blurted, swinging his backpack off his shoulder to wave it in the face of a few, forcing them to make further distance between themselves and the trainer. Anthony hurled another Pokeball "We've gotta fight 'em off! Sentret, come on out and use Thunderbolt! And Chikorita, you use Razor Leaf!"

"Sent!" Sentret shrieked, throwing his arms out as a brilliant ray launched from his body. Several of the Zubat were electrocuted by the outpour of volts, flapping violently to make distance between themselves and the rabbit. That was, ones that hadn't already fallen unconscious.

"Chikorita!" The grass type launched a flurry of sharp leaves from the large growth atop it head. A number of the poisonous bats were cut by the assault, letting out displeased cry before assaulting Chikorita it. Multiple Wing Attacks assaulted it, earning a cry of pain.

"Chikorita! One of 'em's coming in close! Hit it with a Tackle!" Anthony warned, swatting away what he could. Though, he was dealing with some trouble himself, suffering an Air Slash attack that knocked the wind out of him. Floored by the pressure, Anthony let out a cough, doing his best to regain his bearings. By time he'd come to, a single bat was coming right toward him, leaving him speechless. Staring into the face of his attacker, Anthony found himself helpless.

That was, if not for a bolt of lightning that struck out before him, toasting the violent Pokémon. A sigh of relief left Anthony's lungs, which had been denied oxygen in the terrifying moment prior. "Thanks a lot, Sentret. I owe you one! Now, keep your eyes peeled! They're not done, yet!"

The quadruped took Anthony's advice, finding its face to face with one that looked ready to sink its fangs into it. Gritting her teeth, Chikorita threw her head forward, giving the Zubat a bit more of a bite than it could chew. Sent reeling by a fierce Tackle, the Pokémon crashed into the cave wall, falling unconscious.

"I think we've got 'em on the ropes, guys! Keep it up!" Anthony called out, announcing their victory. Perhaps a moment too soon. The few remaining Zubat hung above, pulling back from the three before parting their mouths, spewing several sprays of Toxic goo toward their intended prey.

A collective cry could be heard from all three. Anthony, Sentret, and Chikorita had been doused in poison, each hissing from the unpleasant sting. Anthony sat up, ignoring the pain running through his arm, where the goo had landed. "This is getting bad… Sentret, ward 'em off, with Thunderbolt!"

"Sentret!" Sentret unleashed its brilliant wrath upon the swarm, firing off a powerful stream of electricity that rendered each of the Zubat unconscious. Soon, he collapsed from exertion, lying beside his trainer.

"Man, this stings… Are you guys alright?" He looked between each of his pokemon, who nodded. Though, it was unconvincing. They had gone blue in the face, and it was pretty likely that he had as well. Beginning to feel light-headed, he pulled his backpack off to rummage through it. Stuffing a hand into every pocket he had, the boy's queasy stomach dropped. "We… Don't have any Pecha berries. I think we're out of Antidotes, too! Oh, man… That's no good." He coughed, feeling none too good from the seeping poison that had fallen upon his skin. "I… Guess I'm not as tough as a Pokémon is. You guys are handling that poison better than me, right?"

That was all that mattered, really, to him. As long as his Pokémon were safe, then his primary concern was put to rest. Still, that didn't stop his body from overheating, or his breathing from becoming heavy. Sturdy as Anthony was, he was susceptible just like any other human being.

"Sent!" Feeling none too good himself, he rushed over to his trainer, nudging his shoulder. He couldn't have something happen to him here… They'd come so far together. "Sentret!"

"Don't worry about me, buddy..! I just need to make sure you guys are alright. We've gotta get you guys back to the Pokémon center!" The ailing trainer pushed himself to his feet, trudging toward the light at the end of the tunnel. "As soon as we get there… Nurse Joy'll fix you guys right up!" Stubborn as he was, though, weakening limbs forced him to lean against the cave wall. "Just… Gotta… Keep… Moving!"

It was clear as day that Anthony wasn't going anywhere. Chikorita whined, making its way over to support its trainer. "Chi! Chiko!" Red orbs quivered, worry building over his condition. It was here to protect him. His pokemon. It should've protected him from that attack. "Chiko!" She cried, buckling under another rush of poison. Vision growing weary, she wasn't sure they'd make it far at this rate. Would they wither here? Fall victim to the harsh elements?

Her eyes had shut tight. She had to protect Anthony… And Sentret, too. If she didn't do something now, they were probably done for. Concentration on itself, the Leaf Pokemon glowed teal green.

A brilliant glow caught Anthony's attention, weary eyes turning to the Pokémon supporting him. Black orbs went wide, realization dawning on the trailer Chikorita mummed, a brilliant pink mist emitting its leaf. A soothing scent enveloped Anthony and Sentret, soothing the pain that plagued them. Toxins faded from their skin, and Anthony soon found it far easier to breathe. The stream of pleasant chemicals continued until Anthony's muscles loosened, and Sentret's as well. Breathing in the last of its own production, Chikorita felt its own ailment fade as well. Though, it wouldn't be satisfied until it was sure the others were well. "Chiko?" It nudged Anthony's shoulder with its head.

"Chikorita!"

Single minded as always, Anthony shuffled through his coat pocket, withdrawing his Pokedex.

"New move learned: Aromatherapy."

"What luck!'' Anthony marveled. "Chikorita, you learned Aromatherapy!''

Anthony let out a breath of relief, a smile spreading across his features when it was evident the pain was gone. "Hey, I feel better now! Chikorita, that was great!" This time, he was the one to initiate contact, wrapping his arms around the smaller pokemon's neck. "You learned a new move just to protect us, didn't ya? Maybe Ash was right! Pokemon don't grow stronger for desire, they grow powerful when needed."

"Sent, Sentret!" Feeling rejuvenated himself, the rabbit hopped atop Chikorita's back.

"I guess we shouldn't waste anymore time. We can't risk something like that happening again, huh?" Anthony climbed to his feet, turning back toward their intended path.

"Now, Sentret, return!" Anthony called, bringing Sentret back into its PokéBall. Chikorita hopped back up on his shoulders, mewling.

"Yeah, about time, we got out of this cavern…'' Anthony mused, eager to find the road that reintroduced sunlight.

He walked forward, avoiding the reservoir, and they headed back on the trail. The lanterns hung at various places on the walls soon disappeared, forcing Anthony to return to his flashlight for guidance. They traversed winding paths for what felt like miles, avoiding dips and divots in the ground until the path steadily became more and more straightforward.

It wasn't long before Anthony saw a light that wasn't coming from his flashlight. Curious and eager, he picked up the pace until they rounded a bend. Anthony and Chikorita were met by a steep incline crowned by a large opening in the rock. Sunlight filtered through the opening, casting a shimmering glow on the incline.

"That's gotta be the exit, Chikorita!" Anthony beamed. . He blinked, adjusting to the coming daylight at the end of the tunnel. Chikorita hopped off of the teen's shoulder, chattering excitedly.

"chi-Chikorita!"

"C'mon, let's go!" Anthony agreed. Together, Trainer and Pokémon sprinted up the hill. The steep hill tried to halt their progress, but both of them were somewhat strong enough to fight against that resistance. They inched up the mound, passing in between two rough rock faces as they neared the top.

And finally, they reached the exit. Anthony put his hands on his knees and heaved, sucking in as much air as he could to refill his lungs. He glanced up and stared at the exit as if it were some gateway to another reality, and after looking down at Chikorita, walked forward with the strangest caution.

Everything was white for a moment, but the glare quickly vanished as Anthony adjusted his eyes to the sunlight. The view that awaited him was nothing short of stunning. The mountain's edge formed a stable rock plateau, allowing Trainer and Pokémon to see the entire island. The sun was starting to set in the distance, casting an orange glare over the land and sea. Far down below, countless mountain spires littered the earth, eventually giving way to a coniferous forest that stretched to the Indigo Plateau. A river could even be seen in the distance, bordered on one end by a lake as the river itself spilled into the surrounding ocean.

"It's amazing to look it from up here…" Anthony marveled, awestruck. The mainland was the picture of tranquility, and it was hardly a dot on the map, not to mention the people populating the island. It got Anthony thinking. They had so much yet to be seen, even seen parts of worlds that weren't their own. The unexplored parts, much of their world that they'd never laid eyes on.

"Chiko…" Chikorita agreed.

"Hey, Chikorita…next time we are here, it will be to participate in the Indigo League, won't it?" Anthony asked.

"Chiko!''

"Of course, we will," Anthony assured, "We will work so hard this year, and catch whole lotta Pokemon and grow stronger with them. I will challenge best Trainers in this region, and mark my territory here!"

Chikorita looked out at small twon below, and then back at Anthony. A smile formed on Chikorita's lips. It'd would work day and night to make Anthony's dreams come true!

"Chiko!"

Anthony beamed, tugging Chikorita into a hug, "You're the best, Chikorita! We'll find a new place to go, sure, but first, we've got business to take care of!"

The pair sat on the plateau for several more minutes, silently admiring the view, before a new voice called out behind them.

"Sounds good, but work extra hard….'' A familiar voice sighed from behind. Anthony and Chikorita whirled around, laying eyes on three grinning faces: Ash, Pikachu and Max. The elder man pushed a lock of raven hair from his eyes, and smiled down upon. ''I saw everything, and I am thoroughly impressed."

"Wait, you hadn't left?'' Anthony blinked in confusion.

"Nah!" Ash wiggled a index finger. ''It was a test.''

"A test?''

"I did make it look like we had abandoned you, but we were behind you all the way over here. Now that was all about your survival. If I had blurt it out that we were behind you before, you'd have been dependent on us, but you fought through."

"What about your Pokemon?'' Anthony returned the mini capsules back to their owner.

"They would have appeared if you fell in some serious trouble, but you were responsible, and I admire that.'' Ash smiled, once again playing with the child's hair. "Sorry if I was harsh, bud, but you did good!''

"Thank you, Mr. Ash!'' Anthony beamed. ''I finally got the meaning what you said! To grow stronger with your Pokemon! That's the secret.''

"Glad, that you catch quick!'' Ash repeated. "But let's get on the second phase.''

"What is the second phase?'' Anthony blinked, but something on Ash's face said he wasn't gonna like it.

"Oh man! It's not been long since I ate!'' Max complained.

"At least you ate!'' Anthony barked, performing his fifteenth pushup, with utmost difficulty.

"One of the most important ways to improve your game is through exercise!'' Ash drilled, picking up a dumbbell made of rocks.

"Hey! Did you read that on a sign over here?'' Max complained, not able to take anymore.

The Pokemon were equally engaged in a workout too. Beldum was performing Take Down, trying to smash boulders, under the supervision of Max's Metang and Ash's Dragonite. Chikorita was learning to exert more power as instructed by Torterra and then there was Sentret, lifting heavy rocks tied to his tail, as trained by Pikachu. The entire afternoon, the trio engaged in various exercises and drills, with the rookie trainer learning something new every minute. There was training in everything, from jogging, to rock climbing, to lifting heavy wood, to rock smashing.

Day went by, with the evening arriving in stately fashion, with all the grace of a breeze in repose. Once again, Anthony stood poised by the lake, awaiting the stir in the surface and Poliwrath to pop out. To fish it out, a bait of berries was placed by the bank, while Ash and Max had hid themselves behind the bushes, as a crowd could cancel Poliwrath's appearance.

"Just try to match hit for hit, okay? Don't go for the kill, right off the bat!" Ash advised from the bushes.

Soon, there was disturbance in the surface, and the bulky toad appeared, devoured by the scent of the berry.

"Finally! You are mine, this time Poliwrath!'' Anthony declared, enlarging three Pokeballs all at once. The water type turned, vexed to find the same kid had returned for some more thrashing. Looks whose back for more punishment.

"Take a last look at the lake, Poliwrath, because now you will be coming with me! Go, all three of you!'' Anthony streaked his three Pokeballs at the same velocity, releasing his full team.

"Beldum…''

"Chiko…''

"Sentret!''

"Poli…'' the Heavyweight's brows furrowed. Was this gonna be three against one?

"I'll start with you Sentret, Iron Tail!''

"Sent!'' Sentret nodded frantically. The extremity behind him, hardened into solid-steel, as the Scout Pokemon quickly climbed the heights, soaring threw the air. He grew closer and closer, tail ready to smack the top of Poliwrath's build. However, the muscles in his tail lost its tension, and the tail was now just a limb. Grabbing the tail, Poliwrath spun the normal type wildly before, chucking it for the water.

"Chikorita, save Sentret!''

"Chiko!'' the Leaf Pokemon sauntered forward, launching its tendrils to grab onto the sailing rodent.

"Sentt!''

"Chiko!"'

Both comrades exchanged a trusting look, as Sentret was craned back on the ground.

"Poli!'' the water type bulked, launching a forceful shot of water at Chikorita.

"Iron Defense to save Chikorita, Beldum!'' Anthony roared.

"Beld!'' Glowing a gleaming silver, the Iron Ball Pokemon shielded the grass type by acting as a barrier. The water sprayed died down.

"Beld!'' the eye grew irked at the picture of Poliwrath.

Poliwrath combated by unleashing a barrage of muddy bullets, aimed with Beldum in mind.

"Chikorita, counter with Razor Leaf!"

The Johto region starter, pre-evolved by powerful, swiped its leaf in circular motion, releasing a flurry of sharp leaves cancelling the Mudshot.

"He's doing great!'' Max complimented besides Ash.

"Beldum, Take Down!'' Anthony cried. An outline of gold covered the steel type, as the Iron Ball Pokemon soared, full body ready to slam into Poliwrath.

"Poli!'' the fighting type grew more irked, the iris of its eyes grew red and Poliwrath chanted, emitting a hypnotic wave that stopped Beldum. Tired, and overcoming sleep made Beldum lose its ability to float as it slowly began losing to gravity. Falling fast asleep, Beldum fell on the ground as Poliwrath walked past it, snickering at Chikorita and Sentret.

Anthony smirked. "Not this time, Chikorita, Aromatherapy and Sentret, Helping Hand!''

Discharging the same brilliant mist Chikorita sprayed it all over the field. Hoping his attempts were successful, Beldum's conscious was soon returned, and it flew over once again. "Beld!'' Sentret, in adjoining, emitted a golden glow, raising his paws to lend Beldum strength.

The name calling stunned Poliwrath as he turned back, finding Beldum hovering over the water, now furious as its eye depicted.

"Finish this with Zen Headbutt!'' Anthony cried loud, realizing his time was ticking down.

A layer of psychic energy became the cone of Beldum's head, the Zen Headbutt met with Poliwrath's punch, each attack struggling to overpower the other. However, in pressing back and forth-it was surprising how powerful little Beldum really was

Like puppets whose strings were suddenly cut, both Pokémon fell.

"Anthony, catch it!'' Max hollered.

"..." Furrowing his brows, the trainer pulled out an empty Pokeball and lobbed it on Poliwrath's skin. "Alright… Pokeball, go!"

The capsule fulfilled its execution, enveloping the mulish Poliwrath in a red flash of light. The pokeball landed on solid ground, beginning to wobble.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Ping!

Dashing to grab the sphere, Anthony righted himself before holding the pokeball up high, grinning from ear to ear in his usual trademark pose. "Alright! I just caught… Poliwrath!"

"Chiko!"

"Sent!''

Beldum awoke too, chirping indignantly as it realized how the battle ended.

"Oh yeah!'' Ash smirked, revealing himself from the hiding spot. "I knew it! I knew it all along!''

"Ash!'' the boy chimed, rushing to show him his latest catch. "Look! Look! I did it! I caught Poliwrath!''

"You did buddy!" Ash grinned, holding a palm for the little boy to smack.

"Good work, Anthony,'' Max followed Ash's trail too. He was genuinely impressed.

"If my Pokemon are with me, I am unbeatable!'' Anthony laughed, latching to Ash's waist. "I really don't know how to thank you…''

"Well, you can pass on this spirit to many other trainers.'' Ash chuckled. "Good enough for this old guy.''

"Then…will I ever see you again after tomorrow?'' Anthony questioned.

"Well sure…but you can never tell. I am gonna be out of town for a while. But," Ash fished out something from his sack. "Here, this is something I want you to have.''

Quickly replacing Anthony's hat with one of his old ones, he crowned the next generation with an official Pokemon League hat with red and white patterns.

"This is?'' Anthony quickly pulled it over to examine it.

"This is the first hat I wore when I set out on my journey. It's yours now. Take care of it, Okay?'' Ash beamed with a stretching smirk.

Anthony's eyes sparkled, twinkling with passion. "Man, this is priceless edition.''

"So…looks like it's getting late," Ash droned, looking at the horizon where the sun was about to drown. "Wanna come with us?''

"The Pokemon Center is this way…'' Anthony pointed in the opposite direction. "I'll be heading out to. Thanks again Ash, and Max. I'll be rooting for you.''

"Thanks,'' Ash turned around. ''Catch you later.''

"It was fun, Anthony.''

"Pika pi!''

"Been real guys!'' Anthony waved at their back as their images slowly disappeared.

"Huh…What a day…" Max sighed. "That kiddo was something huh?''

"Got that right," Ash smiled, sighting the town had arrived. "And someday, he's gonna take the League by storm.''

"Kinda like your heir?''

"Something like that.''

"We didn't get the training I imagined but it sure was spent wisely. Never thought I could impart wisdom…"

"When did you impart something?'' Ash casted a side glare as they made it into the town through the cobblestone road. "It was all me today."

"You could at least let me get a piece of it,'' Max whined.

"Sure, make your own fan club,'' Ash teased. "I don't know why I am such a sap sometimes, but I have a soft spot for that kid, Anthony. All day we worked to get him in good shape trying to get the balance just right, so that he could achieve something he really wanted. I do miss those days. Thanks Anthony, for recreating me my childhood…''

Well, a small filler doesn't hurt anyone. Fillers were kinda necessary for my story. Next one will finally bring Lance into the series. And a physical appearance of Goodshow too.

Goodbye for now.
