I had to admit, I had never felt so strongly in my life. My love for Bella who had taken Seth in without asking and provided him with a home and with comfort when he needed it battled hard against the hatred, I felt towards Sam. Sam who had called me a traitor and banned me from the reservation and had said I was no longer a part of their pack. All of this, I could handle. It was the sight of Seth, the kid who liked nothing more than to get on everyone else's nerves which you tolerated because he reminded you of the little brother you never had, and who now looked so defeated, so broken. With one sweep of his hand, Sam had killed Seth's innocence, destroyed every dream he still had and had left him a disappointed little kid who had suddenly realized life was much harder than you'd ever believed.
Bella had been right, I didn't need to say much. I just listened quietly while Seth told me everything Sam had said about me, all the awful things and unfair accusations. He had just finished when Bella called us to dinner.
She'd made fish with vegetables and potatoes, not something I usually ate, but this time I was grateful for every bit of food. I hadn't eaten properly for almost two days and I was starving. The same went for Seth who gulped down his food like there was no tomorrow and asked for a refill when Bella had not even eaten half of her own plate. I caught her look and grinned. I knew that I ate a lot but that was nothing compared to Seth. The kid could eat a whole cow and still would not be full. Maybe this was because he was still so young, only fourteen and still growing, who knew?
Luckily, Bella had anticipated that and so there was plenty of food. After dinner I helped her clear the table while Seth, with Bella's permission, roamed through her father's DVD collection. It had been her idea to make a movie night to help us get our minds off things.
Seth, who loved to watch movies and going to the cinema, had lit up and only for that I could have kissed her. And I did. In the kitchen. Long and hard.
And I wouldn't have stopped had not Seth called from the living room: "Bella, how does this thing work? It looks ancient!"
