Book 2: Land of Grass
Chapter 29:
Gibberish
It's at the moon's peak when Hotaru shoots upright from a dead slumber and stares in the supposed direction of the desert village.
InuYasha's watch wasn't supposed to end for another three hours so the speed at which she rockets from the bedding and the tight coil of her chakra is a tad bit alarming.
"Someone's coming." She breathed, moving into a crouch. "West by southwest. 8 kilometers and closing at a steady rate."
InuYasha's mind flickered through possibilities. "How many?"
"Five," Was the prompt reply. "One with Kage level chakra reserves."
InuYasha understood each of the individual words, barring Kage, but the whole of that last sentence was gibberish.
Ignoring the addition, the boy gestured for Hotaru to stay at the campsite and slid out the tent flap to the cool of the desert night.
Moon a fat disc in the sky, InuYasha squinted in the direction that could be Red. She'd had four hanger-ons when they met. The possibility of it being her wasn't high but InuYasha also learned to trust his gut.
Something was about to happen and he needed to be the one to head it off. The former hanyou really hoped his shit luck would be on hold for a bit.
One thing at a time.
With a quiet word to pack up, the boy opened into a lope and made his way to head off their possible company. Hotaru's chakra was sharp in its upset but InuYasha didn't care.
If it was the She-devil, the last thing he needed was Red's less than reliable team to take offense to a foreign pseudo-shinobi. Red would at least hear him out... probably...
As long as she wasn't too mad at him…
Fuck.
Punting that unhelpful thought away, InuYasha continued the path Hotaru set for him until the wind shifted and InuYasha caught the faintest combination of something salty and the tang of loamy earth in the air.
He never thought he'd feel relief with that scent.
Though whether she'd be excited to see him was another thing entirely.
