This prompt is from Spiderwolf on A03 - Tony forgets Peter's science fair and has to make it up to him?
I apologise for any mistakes and I hope you enjoy :D
First Place
Tony can feel his palms sweating as he knocks on the front door of the Parker's home. He wouldn't be surprised if they didn't open the door. If he was them, he wouldn't. He had screwed up big time and now he was here to fix it, if he could. The very thought made his throat tighten and his heart clench.
He straightened when he heard the sound of the lock being undone and his mouth went dry as the door opened. A cold chill went down his spine as May Parker appeared in the doorway.
"May," Tony greeted.
"Stark," May glared, arms folding across her chest.
Tony winced at the icy chill in her voice. It was empathised by the narrow of her eyes. Tony was surprised he just didn't suddenly drop dead where he stood. Not that he didn't deserve any less.
"Is Peter here?" Tony asked carefully.
"In his room," May dragged her glare up and down Tony. "Not that you deserve to know that."
Tony flinched. "I'm sorry, May. Really. You have no idea how sorry I am."
"He was really excited about sharing this with you Tony," May said, the disappointment in her voice filling Tony's mouth with something sour.
"I know," Tony said. "And I was just as excited to see it."
"Yet you forgot to show up," May snapped. She drew in a deep breath, physically calming herself. She let out the breath she drew in, her shoulder slumping. "This was important, Tony."
"I know," Tony swallowed. "Please, can I talk to him."
"He doesn't need excuses," May said. "If that's what you are here to give."
"I'm not going to give them to him," Tony promised. "Please, let me apologise and make things right with Peter."
May stood still in the doorway before heaving a sigh and opening it wider. Tony let out a silent breath of relief and entered the Parker's home. It was quiet and the silence made Tony heart ache. The last time he had been at the Parker home it had been full of laughter and light. A time when he hadn't been a complete wanker and hurt Peter.
"He's in his bedroom," May said. "But if he doesn't want to talk to you, then I will throw your ass out."
"You can beat me black and blue too if you like," Tony nodded. "I won't stop you."
May huffed, a tiny smile tugging at her lips. She gestured to Peter's closed bedroom door.
Tony approached the door as if it was a cowering dog. He wiped his palms on his jeans that he wore before lifting a hand and knocking on the door. He waited for permission, his heart beating faster with each moment that there was silence. Finally, he heard a faint come in. Pushing open the door, Tony stepped inside.
Peter was seated at his desk. He was sitting with his legs propped up on the desk, a blue ribbon with first place written in gold being twisted and turned in his hands.
Gently shutting the door, Tony felt his stomach churn as Peter wouldn't look at him.
"I'm sorry, Peter," Tony said into the silence of the room. "Really, truly sorry. I screwed up."
Peter continued to turn the first-place ribbon in his hands. "It was just a stupid science fair."
Tony had started shaking his head before Peter had even finished his sentence. "It wasn't stupid. Don't do that Pete, not to me."
Peter finally looked up. He looked paler than usual and younger.
"You know, my dad never cared about those kinds of things," Tony said, shuffling closer. "I always promised myself I wouldn't be like him and yet…" he shrugged. "Screwed up already, haven't I."
"It's not like I'm…like I'm your kid or something," Peter mumbled quietly. "You don't have any obligations to me."
Tony's heart clenched again. "Now I feel even more like a jackass."
Peter blinked at him with confusion.
Tony shuffled even closer, laying a hand on Peter's ankle where it was still kicked up on the desk. "See, the thing is Pete, I sort have been seeing you as my kid."
Peter jaw dropped open.
"I don't have any right too. You've already had some amazing parental figures in your life and I'm not the first-choice people would make when it comes to being a father," Tony continued to speak. "But you made it so easy, you know. You're an amazing kid. Still don't know why you look up to me."
"You," Peter swallowed. "You think of me as your kid?"
Tony nodded. "Spastic, isn't it? Never saw me as being a dad. Don't come from the best stock, if you get my meaning." Tony sniffed, turning his gaze away from Peter to look around the room instead. "Meeting you changed that."
"Me?" Peter squeaked.
Tony turned back to Peter and saw the red spreading across his cheeks. "Yeah, you, kiddo."
"But I'm Peter," Peter frowned.
"You sure are," Tony agreed, cocking his head to one side. "The kindest, bravest, most generous and selfless teenager I've ever had the pleasure to meet and work with. You make loving you so easy Pete."
Peter mouth moved but no sound came out. Eventually, he managed to stutter out, "You really think of me that way?"
"Yeah," Tony said. "and if it makes you uncomfortable, I can pull back."
"Is that why you missed the science fair? Because you thought I was uncomfortable?" Peter asked.
Tony winced. "No. That was me being a jackass. I was in a meeting and forgot about it. I'm really sorry, Peter. I should have done much better."
Peter kicked his feet off the desk, Tony's heart skipping a beat as Peter nearly toppled off the chair in the process. The kids' reflexes had him landing on his feet and catching the chair before it even hit the ground. He stared at Tony with sparkling eyes and flushed cheeks. It threw Tony for a moment for he was absolutely expecting to see anger on Peter's face.
"You really mean it? You just forgot because of a meeting?" Peter asked.
Tony nodded. "Yeah, kid and I promise I'll do better. I don't want to be my dad. Your achievements need to be celebrated."
Peter darted forward, hugging Tony tightly around the waist, burying his face into the cotton of his shirt.
Tony let out a small grunt at the impact but wrapped his arms around Peter. He was a little confused, but relief coursed through his veins as he hugged his kid tight.
"Can I call you dad?" Peter asked, voice quiet and muffled by Tony's shirt.
"Yeah," Tony choked out. He cleared his throat, a smile tugging at his lips. "You can, if you like. I won't force you to do anything you aren't comfortable with. I don't want to replace anyone."
"I like you being my dad," Peter pulled back, looking at Tony shyly. "It's nice."
Tony ruffled Peter's hair, pulling him back into another hug. "I'm going to make up for missing your science fair. I promise."
"I know you will," Peter smiled. "I understand though. You and Aunt May can't always be there for these kinds of things. I know you try your hardest though."
"You're too good for words, kid," Tony smiled softly. "I love you."
"Love you too," Peter beamed. "Thanks for coming over and saying all those nice things."
"You deserve to hear them," Tony gently pulled away from Peter. "Always."
Peter smile was beautiful, and Tony didn't stop the smile that spread across his face. He pulled Peter in for another hug, never having felt luckier than he did in this moment right now.
Happy reading :)
