Home For The Weekend
Peter rolled his shoulder and stretched his neck with a groan. He looked at his watch, wincing at the time. He had been slouched over the workbench for hours trying to fix his web shooters. They had gotten jammed on his last patrol which had him falling from a lamp post. It should have been a simple fix, but it had been a tad more complicated than he had assumed and it had taken hours instead of minutes.
"Friday?" Peter rubbed his eyes. "What's the time?"
"It is 11:37 in the evening, Peter," FRIDAY responded.
Peter eyes bugged open. "That late? Are you sure?"
"Positive, Peter," Friday sounded amused.
Peter started collecting his things. He was surprised that Mr. Stark hadn't come back and told him to pack up. He had been working with Peter when he had gotten a call which had taken him out of the lab and to the lower levels of the Tower. That had been hours ago, and Peter was surprised that Mr. Stark hadn't come back to lab. Whatever had called him away must have been important.
Peter yawned again and rubbed his eyes. He was sure that Mr. Stark wouldn't mind if he headed off to bed. They had the whole weekend to do lab things together. May had gone out of town on a business conference and had left Mr. Stark in charge of Peter. Technically she had left Pepper in charge, but Peter wasn't going to tell his mentor that.
Peter headed to the door, another yawn taking over his body –
Smack
Peter stumbled back as he ran into the lab doors, reeling back and clutching his nose. "FRIDAY, what the hell?" He pulled his hands back and winced when he saw blood. He looked around and spotted a semi clean rag on one of the work benches. He picked it up, holding it to his nose and wincing as a dull throbbed spread across his face.
"I'm sorry Peter," FRIDAY said. "Are you okay?"
"M fine," Peter mumbled from behind the rag. "Can you open the doors?"
"I'm sorry Peter. Boss has initiated the close-up-shop protocol," FRIDAY said. "I cannot open the doors for anyone."
Peter mouth dropped open. "But I'm still in here! Where is Mr. Stark?"
"Boss and Mrs. Boss is in California," FRIDAY said.
"But he was just here!"
"The Bosses left several hours ago," FRIDAY explained.
"Oh my god," Peter moaned from behind the rag. He dabbed his nose and let the rag fall from his face. He sniffed, wincing at the pain but could feel that the blood had stopped flowing. Peter jumped when he felt something brushing his hair and looked up to see DUM-E hovering above him. The robot cooed at him quietly and Peter managed a small smile. "Hey Buddy. You got left behind too, huh?"
DUM-E let out a series of beeps and Peter felt his shoulder relaxing.
"So, FRIDAY am I, like, stuck in here?" Peter asked.
"Until Boss lifts the close-up-shop protocol."
"Huh," Peter looked around the lab. It wasn't the worse place to be stuck. In fact, if Peter ever wanted to be stuck somewhere, Mr. Stark's lab would be the place to do it. There was everything that Peter needed. A couch to sleep on, blankets and a pillow that Rhodey told him that he had bought for his mentor after finding him passed out there one too many times. There was a little fridge with food and water, a bathroom and all the toys Peter could ever dream off.
"Sweet," Peter said. Peter had felt his nose starting to heal and winced at the blood had begun to dry on his face. He moved to the sink and splashed water over his face and scrubbed it clean. He grinned when DUM-E was there with another clean rag for him to wipe his face.
As Peter moved to the fridge to find something to eat and drink, he pulled out his phone and dialled Ned's number. It didn't take long, Ned picking up on the second ring.
"Hey dude," Ned greeted. "Are you out patrolling?"
"Better. I'm locked in Mr. Stark's lab," Peter beamed. He chose a couple of snacks and a coke and flopped himself down on the couch.
"Dude, no way," Ned gasped. "That's totally awesome!"
"Right!" Peter opened the packet of pretzels he had selected.
"How did you even manage that?" Ned asked.
"I think Mr. Stark forgot I was here," Peter shrugged. "He took a phone call and then he just, like, never came back."
"Dude, what if he got kidnapped?" Ned suggested in a hushed whisper.
"From his own Tower?" Peter frowned. "This is Ironman we are talking about."
"Oh, right," Ned said. "Dude, you locked in Ironman's lab! This is, like, the coolest thing that has ever happened to you."
"Even cooler than getting bit by a radioactive spider?" Peter asked.
"Way cooler."
"Where are you going?" Tony asked as Pepper stood up.
She smiled down at him, smoothing her skirt. "Bathroom. Save my seat."
Tony watched her walk down the aisle of the plane and disappear into the bathroom stall. He turned his head and glared at Rhodey who took Pepper's vacated seat.
"Hey, this seat is saved."
"Yeah, yeah," Rhodey waved his best friend off. "I'll move when she gets back."
"What's up, Honey Bear?" Tony asked. "Jealous? Having trouble sharing?"
Rhodey snorted and patted Tony's shoulder. "Whatever helps you sleeps at night, Tin Can."
Tony grinned widely. Although it was late, Tony hadn't felt this relaxed in a while. Spread out across the plane was the team, all of them having made time for this little vacation that Pepper had insisted they all take. Work had been piling up on all of them and she had suggested a trip to California to help them de-stress.
"I wanted to ask how you are feeling," Rhodey asked.
"Feeling?" Tony frowned.
"Yeah. I know you two have haven't spent this much time apart for a while after what happened a few months ago," Rhodey said.
Tony blinked. "Want to circle back there, Honey Bear. I have no idea what you are talking about."
"Come on, Tony. You don't have to pretend with me. Deny it all you want, you're practically the kid's dad at this point."
Tony's heart dropped in his chest and he bolted upright in his chair. "Peter."
"Yeah, Peter. I get you're going to be nervous about leaving him for the weekend –"
"I locked him in the lab," Tony breathed.
Rhodey blinked. "You locked the kid in your lab? Tones, you can't lock Peter up to protect him –"
Tony waved his hands, getting to his feet. "No! No. Shit. I fucked up. I forgot he was in the lab. I thought – shit I thought he had gone home but he's meant to be with me this weekend!"
"You forgot him and locked him in your lab," Rhodey repeated. "Oh Tones."
"Shut up," Tony warned. "Not one word to Pepper. Or May." He stepped around Rhodey and headed towards the door of the plane.
Rhodey stood up, following him. "Tones, we can turn the plane around."
"See you in California," Tony said, and he entered a small closet, locking the door behind him. It wasn't a closet though. He tapped at his watched, the suit wrapping around him.
"FRIDAY," Tony greeted. "Drop me, sweetheart."
"Opening hatch," FRIDAY responded.
The floor of the closet opened, and Tony was falling into the air. He blasted off as soon as he was clear of the plan and headed to New York, cursing himself the whole way.
Peter woke to the sound of the doors hissing open and DUM-E trilling coos. He stretched, body going taught before he sunk back into the couch cushions and he tugged the blanket up to his chin. He mumbled as something brushed through his hair and he struggled to open his eyes. When he did, Mr. Stark's face swam above him before his vision cleared.
"M'ark," He slurred with sleep.
"Hey Pete," Tony said, brushing his hair back. "I'm so sorry kid."
"S'okay," Peter yawned. "Mmm had snacks and DUM-E."
Tony chuckled, kissing the top of Peter's head. "DUM-E did a great job."
DUM-E trilled loudly.
"Come on, let's get you to a real bed," Tony said, prompting Peter to sit up.
"What about California?" Peter asked, getting to his feet.
"It will be there tomorrow," Tony promised, wrapping an arm around Peter's shoulders. "Hey Kid?"
"Hmm?" Peter hummed, leaning into Tony's side.
"You know I would never forget you on purpose, right? You know that I will always be there for you?"
"I know dad," Peter yawned.
Tony beamed, heart tumbling in his chest. He pulled Peter tighter into his side and kissed the top of his head. He had the best kid in the world. He decided he would wait until tomorrow to ask why his spider senses had warned him about the door.
Happy reading :)
