Hey guys, it's time for another chapter! I'm almost done with my Legend of Zelda story so I will have more time to work on this story. I hope you guys like it so far. It's always fun to add history into it and it made history as a school subject fun for me. I'm going to try to make this chapter more serious. Please review or comment on the story when you can! Finally, here's the chapter!
Ch. 61: Scarlett's Feelings
(Year: 1940)
Britannia sat in Hitler's office on one of the chairs in front of the man's desk. He wasn't currently in the room because he had been asked by one of his generals to talk to him about something. It was just her in there so she wasn't as uncomfortable as she could have been.
She shifted in her seat and looked outside. It was June so it was hot outside. It was also windy so the gentle rattling of the windowsill could be heard from where she was sitting.
'I hate being here,' she thought to herself.
She was kind of forced to come here at least every two months to catch up on information with Hitler or Germany, mostly Hitler because he liked looking at her. At least, that's what she thought was the reason. Another possible reason is that he still wanted her and Germany to become a couple. She knew that wasn't going to happen and she had already made herself clear to Germany that it wasn't happening. Hitler was stubborn though, as well as persistent. It was important that she came though because she was able to obtain vital information about what the Nazis were doing and relay it to the Allies. As for her end, she had to give them information about America. Obviously, she had to lie to them and either say she didn't have any new information or just give them fake info. She was starting to run out of ideas about that aspect of these trips.
She sighed and crossed one leg over the other.
'Maybe I should snoop around; look through his desk drawer or something…Nah, too risky. Don't think I would find anything useful anyway. Are they just going to leave me in here all by myself for this long? It's been like twenty minutes…'
She looked down and smoothed out the wrinkles that had formed in her dress. Today, she went with a simple black dress with shiny black heels. She styled her hair with side-swept pin curls since it was a popular choice among women in her country. She wondered if she would keep her hair this way the whole trip or if she would change it up. The plan was to stay for two days with today being the first. Germany and Prussia were going to be here too so at least she had someone she could talk to without feeling dismayed. There was something about Hitler that made her feel awful inside. This is not counting the terrible stuff he's done to various groups of people and countries.
"Es tut mir leid, Sie warten zu lassen, mein Lieber. (Sorry to keep you waiting, my dear.)"
She looked at the door to see Hitler walking in. Speak of the devil. He sat down at his desk and he had a huge shit-eating grin on his face. She spoke to him in German, but her mind automatically translated it to English when talking or listening to him.
"What is it?" She asked.
"I just got word that the Battle of France is over. We'll be signing an armistice with the French in a few days. I have the perfect place where we can sign it too; the same place they made us sign our armistice at the end of World War 1, Compiègne Forest. Revenge is the greatest reward a man can get!" He exclaimed, shooting his hands out in front of him.
Internally, Scarlett was horrified by the news, but she had to act like she was happy too. She was particularly good at faking her emotions by now.
"Oh? That's fantastic! What are the casualties?"
He shook his head and sat back in his chair.
"They're reported to be low. Much lower than the enemy. I would bring out a bottle of champagne, but I do not drink," he told her with a joyous chuckle. She was dying inside thinking about all those people in Paris who had lost their lives because of this man…
"That's okay, I don't drink either," she said with a smile. She stood up and walked to the window to look outside.
"When do you think Germany and Prussia will get here?"
"I think they will get here around dinner time. If not then, then late tonight. I just know they will love this amazing news. Come now, Britannia, sit. We still have other matters to discuss."
She turned to look at him and hesitantly sat back down.
"Because of this news, we no doubt will turn our attention to Great Britain, America, and Russia. Those are the last three countries in our way. They also happen to be the biggest threats to our way of life. Our perfection. I think it may be time to discuss Britannia joining our forces in the war," he said to her. She tensed up a bit.
"Don't you think it would be too early? I'm not sure that it's a good idea to become involved in this at this point…"
The man appeared surprised as if he thought she would agree with him. She wondered if everyone just said, 'yes' to everything he asked of them, or if they were too afraid to say, 'no'.
"You don't think so? If you were able to pull their attention away from Germany and let us focus on Russia, then we would have no problem overpowering their military. Your military is close in size to mine so you would be able to pose a strong threat to them," he said. She crossed her arms over her chest and looked up at the ceiling.
"That's true but the problem is that I'm an island and I would have to attack them amphibiously. Though, my navy is one of the strongest branches of my military because of it. I still think it's too early to do anything major like attacking another country. Public opinion isn't exactly on your side," she muttered. He frowned and brought his hands together.
"Okay, then I want you to work on improving that. I want your people to think of the Americans and English as devils. Destructors of peace! At the same time, I want them to think of us as their liberators. Can you do that?" He asked with a passive aggressive tone. She slowly nodded at him.
"Yes, I will try…"
"Trying is not the same as doing," he remarked smartly. She wanted to roll her eyes so bad! She didn't say anything to that other than a quick glance at the floor and then back to him.
"...I'm only joking. I'm sure you will get it done. I can see that you are tired so I will let you rest until dinner. I will send someone to notify you when it's ready."
"Okay, thank you. See you then," she said before standing up and leaving the room. As soon as the door hit her back, she frowned and glared at the ground on her way to her room. What did he mean by she looked tired!? In her room, she looked at herself in the mirror and she looked fine as far as she was concerned.
"What an asshole…" she whispered to herself.
She sat on her bed and brought her legs up to hold them. He seemed extra snippy than usual even though he had just gotten some good news. Was he mad at her for something? She didn't care what he thought of her, but she didn't want to deal with his anger towards her. Luckily, he hasn't gotten legitimately angry at her at all yet. Prussia once told her that when Hitler's angry, it's one of the scariest things you can witness. She didn't want to have to be a part of that…
"Ugh...Alfred where are you when I need you. I'm all alone here with no one to talk to…" she said in the direction of the window next to her bed. She turned her head and looked at her purse, which was sitting on the nightstand. Leaning over, she opened it and took out the picture of her and America back when she had their picture taken. Scarlett stared at it for a moment before putting it back in her purse and sealing it.
"Wish you were here…"
She stood up from her bed and walked over to the desk that was set near the foot of the bed. She decided that she should probably get some work done while she had the chance. Her president had given her a stack of paperwork to go over since she wasn't going to be at home to do it. So basically, homework…
She sat at the desk and took out all of the papers. Clicking her pen, she got to work on them for around three hours until a hard knock hit her bedroom door. She jumped at the knock, having been too engrossed with the work she was doing, and got up to answer it. At the door was a Nazi soldier.
"Dinner is ready, ma'am," he said in German.
"Danke," she replied simply. She followed the soldier to the dining room after closing her door and found Hitler waiting for her at one of the ends. Great. Just great.
"Ah! Well rested I presume, Britannia?" He asked.
"I actually decided to get some paperwork done," she said as she sat down. The plate in front of her was liver dumplings. The man beside her followed a vegetarian diet so that meant she would have to as well. She didn't really mind; she just preferred at least a little meat to go with her meal.
"This dish is my favorite. I ask my chefs to make it at least once a week."
Scarlett nodded at him and began eating. It was just the two of them in the room again. You would think a soldier or two would accompany them but apparently not. The silence was awkward between them. She wasn't sure how to start a conversation with this guy. She wasn't even sure if she wanted to have a conversation with him.
"S-So...Any word on when Germany or Prussia will get here?" she finally asked. He chuckled and tapped his fork on his plate.
"Any minute now. By the number of times you've asked about Germany, I'd say you can't wait until he gets here. That's good!"
"What do you mean?" She asked out of confusion.
"Well, isn't it obvious? I know you two try to say you don't have feelings for each other, but I see it. It's only a matter of time."
This again? How many times does she have to repeat herself?
"No, I don't have any feelings for Germany. He's just a friend. Really," she told him as clearly as possible.
"Britannia, I can tell when you're lying to me," he said, as if he knew exactly what she was thinking...Which he didn't. He just thought he did.
"But I don't…" She said again. He snorted and shook his head. She furrowed her eyebrows and went back to eating.
"In Britannia, is it custom to lie to your superiors?" He asked with a smirk. She looked back at him and he was staring daggers at her. She felt like she was getting in trouble for nothing. Like what the hell is going on!?
"Excuse me?"
"I bet your president is irritated constantly," he laughed, taking a bite of his food, "to be honest, you talk too much for your own good and I don't really appreciate it. You can lie as many times as you want but I know the truth…"
She felt like she didn't care what he thought but that did hurt her feelings. He was being a douche to her for no reason.
"Umm...I-"
"Oh god, that trip was horrible. One of the roads was blocked off so we had to take an alternate route. It was all just a mess. Oh, Scarlett! You're here! Hopefully you didn't get too bored!" Prussia yelled as he came into the room with a suitcase in both hands. Germany came in behind him, also with two suitcases. Scarlett's heart soared seeing them because this dinner was becoming unbearable.
"No, Britannia is doing just fine. She was just lying to me about her feelings for you, Germany. But I'm too smart for her!" Hitler told the country with another laugh. Germany's blue eyes widened at his leader and then he looked to Scarlett to see the upset expression on her face.
"O-Oh, I'm sure she wasn't lying, mein Führer. She truly sees me as a friend," Ludwig explained.
"Bah! Absurd! I won't hear another word of it!" His boss yelled, waving his hand around. Just by looking at her face, Prussia and Germany could see that she was hating her life right now. They thought maybe changing the subject would make her feel better.
"Right...Anyway, are you enjoying your meal?" Ludwig asked. She looked up at him and gave a small smile, grateful for what he was doing.
"Yes, it's good."
"I'm glad! I have always preferred the chefs here than in Berlin; It is more country-style," he said, sitting down across from her at the table. Prussia sat next to her after placing their luggage in the corner of the room.
"I understand that. In Britannia, I love going to my smaller towns and trying out the food. It's made with more love than in the city I think."
"Whatever it is, it surely cannot compete with Germany's cuisine," Hitler remarked beside her.
"Huh?" She asked quietly.
"I have been told that Britannian food is similar to American food. Greasy, unhealthy, and tasteless. German food is made with care and compassion. It is top of the line," he told her, again talking to her in a demeaning fashion. She felt the strong urge to punch him in the face. But she's kind of trying to be his ally so she wasn't allowed to beat the shit out of him. She could do the next best thing though.
"You know, it's getting late. I think I will head to bed now."
She stood up from her chair and Hitler's hand touched the top of her hand.
"You don't want dessert, Britannia? They've made éclairs for us!"
"No, thank you," she said sternly in English, moving her hand from under his. Germany and Prussia were slightly stunned watching her leave the dining room the way she did. Their leader didn't seem to notice her obvious saddened mood and waved his hand at them.
"She's missing out! It must be one of those nights for her," he said, not elaborating on what he meant by that. Prussia didn't know what to say so he stood up.
"I'm going to go check on those éclairs!"
He dashed out of the room, leaving just the two. Ludwig brushed his hand through his hair and sighed.
"Mein Führer, don't you think you were a little mean to Britannia? I think you might have upset her…" He started. Hitler frowned and shook his head.
"No, she seemed perfectly fine. You're just tired from your trip here, Germany."
"Okay, but you don't have to tell her that we're better than her every chance you get…"
"But we are," He retorted, as if he couldn't believe Ludwig was saying this.
"Even so...it might hurt her feelings if you continuously tell her that she is lying and that her food is terrible."
If only Scarlett was here to listen to him. She would greatly appreciate having at least one person on her side. Ludwig's boss kept on though, as usual. His smugness was everlasting. Of course, he already knew that.
"Germany, everything I told that girl is true. She has no idea what she's talking about. Who cares about her feelings? All she is is a way to gain the upper hand on Britain and the United States. That's it. If she is a tough and strong country like she says she is, then she can handle a few truths. Now, please tell the chefs to hurry up with that dessert!"
On the other side of the home, Scarlett walked to her room and gently closed her bedroom door. Once inside, she let out a big sigh and laid on her bed. She had a president like this once and she was beginning to relive those horrible memories from when she had to deal with that. He wasn't waging any wars or anything, but he did treat her horribly.
"Why can't everyone just be nice for once…"
She laid there and thought about the conversation at dinner until someone knocked on her door. She cursed under her breath and got up to answer it. She opened the door to find Ludwig standing there. He looked embarrassed in front of her.
"Ludwig?" she asked.
"I just wanted to say I'm sorry about dinner…" he muttered in her native language, "...can I come in?"
She nodded and let him in before closing the door. They both sat on the bed and Scarlett spoke first.
"He's been acting that way towards me all day and I don't know why."
"He can be very," he paused and tried to think of the right word to use, "prideful."
Scarlett rolled her eyes.
"Yes, but he doesn't have to be an asshole about it. It's like no matter what I did it was a mistake to him. Earlier in his office he got irritated at me because I told him it was too early for me to join the war. It is! Like, I'm not going to put my people through that right now, especially since public opinion is extremely low!"
"I know, Scarlett. He can be impatient too. It's hard to get used to him but eventually you will be. Don't let him ruin your day is all I'm trying to say."
She frowned at the boy sitting next to her and huffed.
"And all I'm trying to say is that I deserve some respect. I don't deserve to be talked to like I'm nothing, which is exactly how he talked to me back there!"
Her anger and frustration were starting to get the best of her, and her eyes began to water.
"...I wasn't even doing anything, and he sat there and belittled me, Ludwig! He basically told me that I was a piece of shit! It just...I don't know...it really hurt my feelings…"
A tear had fallen down her cheek and she brought her palm up to wipe it away. Ludwig looked at her sadly and then down at the ground.
"Do you...want a hug?" he asked shyly. She sniffed and nodded her head, letting him give her a hug to make her feel better. She hugged him back and rested her head on his shoulder.
"I'm sorry, Scarlett. You shouldn't have to feel that way," he said. She slowly pulled away and he could see that her face was red from crying.
"Thanks, Ludwig...I feel a little better now. I didn't mean to get upset like that. I shouldn't be crying right now," she told him, embarrassed that she had gotten emotional with him. He shook his head and smiled.
"Nein. Crying is natural and you shouldn't hold what you're feeling inside. Personally, I have a problem with holding everything inside. It's just who I am. But just because I do it doesn't mean you have to."
Scarlett smiled genuinely for the first time that day and nodded.
"You're right. Thanks for talking to me about it. I really needed that. I'm glad you and Prussia are here finally."
He stood up from the bed and gave her arm a comforting squeeze.
"Me too and anytime. Don't be afraid to talk to us about these things. We don't want you to feel miserable when you're here. We will see you tomorrow, okay?"
He began walking to the door and Scarlett felt her tummy growl.
"Okay, and Ludwig?"
He turned to look at her.
"Ja?"
"Can you get me an éclair from the kitchen? I didn't have enough to eat."
He smiled and nodded.
"I'll get you two," he replied before leaving.
The next day, Scarlett woke up and took a shower. Her talk with Ludwig last night helped her fall asleep faster and she was surprised that he had cared enough to ask her how she was doing. She could tell he was uncomfortable in doing it and was glad he had the courage to go through with it anyway. She was dreading talking to their boss though. It's possible that he was just having an off day yesterday, but she doubted it.
"Okay, hopefully today will be better," she mumbled as she left her room. As soon as she walked into the hallway she bumped into Ludwig. He was still in his black undershirt and his blonde hair was down. Scarlett's eyes widened in shock.
"Sorry, Scarlett," He said while rubbing his eyes. He then saw the expression on her face.
"...what?"
"Nothing, it's just I've never seen your hair down!" She yelled. He narrowed his eyes and then felt his hair with his hand.
"Oh...It tends to go down during sleep."
"How funny," she remarked with a smirk. He grimaced and began brushing it back. Prussia came into the hallway a few moments later and looked just as tired as his brother.
"Am I the only one fully awake?" Scarlett laughed.
"Probably," Prussia muttered.
"Yeah, well, I'm probably going to wait until y'all are ready before I go into the dining room. Prussia and Germany looked at each other and then back at her.
"We'll try to hurry."
They rushed to the bathroom to take a shower and she leaned on the wall in the hallway with her hands behind her back. She didn't want to be alone again with Hitler, so she didn't mind waiting. After 15 minutes or so, they came out of the bathroom looking like their ordinary selves. She smiled at them.
"That's better. You ready?"
They nodded and the three of them made their way to the dining room for breakfast.
"I wonder what we're having this time," Prussia said to them casually. They entered the dining room to see that the table was full of food but there was no one sitting at it. They looked around for their leader, but he was nowhere to be found.
"I'll go ask if anyone's seen him…" Ludwig said, going towards the kitchen. Prussia shrugged his soldiers and motioned Scarlett to sit with him.
"Oh well, let's sit anyways."
They sat at one end of the table and saw that the table was covered with bread and various jams. There were also eggs and yogurt, but Scarlett went for the bread. Grabbing a knife, she started spreading strawberry jelly on one side of it.
"So, I've been meaning to ask you if you're okay from last night. You didn't look that happy when we arrived," Prussia said to her. She looked at him and sighed.
"Yeah, I'm okay. I was just upset that he kept talking to me that way…"
Prussia hummed in thought.
"I figured. I'm sorry about that. I was going to talk to you about it last night but Ludwig said he had already. Just know that we've got your back if you ever feel angry or sad about something!" He grinned. She smiled and thanked him. She hated that she would eventually have to fight them again once they learned she wasn't actually on their side. She wished she could stay peaceful with both the Allies and the Axis but she knew that wasn't possible…
"I asked them where he was and they said he decided to leave early for France to set up the armistice," Ludwig said as he came back into the room. Scarlett felt relieved that he wasn't here to berate her for the remainder of her trip.
"Wow, okay," Prussia said with an offended chuckle, "as soon as we get here too…"
"It'll be fine. We'll just have to meet him over there in a few days."
He sat down next to Scarlett and began eating. To no one's surprise, without a certain someone, the breakfast went great and everyone had a good time.
"So I guess your trip here is going to be a little shorter than expected, Scarlett," Germany said. She smiled and wiped her mouth with a napkin.
"I don't mind!"
The brothers smiled.
"We're sorry that the trip wasn't as good as it was supposed to be."
"That's okay...I'm sorry I got upset. I'm still embarrassed about that, Ludwig."
He shook his head and waved his hands.
"No! No! Don't be! You had every right to be upset!"
"In any case, thanks again for cheering me up. Both of you," she said.
She spent the rest of the day spending time with Germany and Prussia before she had to leave for home. She couldn't wait to see America and tell him about everything that had happened. Knowing him, he'll most likely threaten to fly to Germany himself and beat Hitler's ass. If that were to happen, she'd come with him and help.
As Scarlett got on the plane to go back to Britannia, Scarlett turned and looked at the country around her. Given France's defeat, she had no idea what would come next. However, she did know that it was getting dangerously close to the time where she would have to step up and support America and Britain. The thought scared her, but it was going to happen. She would make sure of that.
And that's the end of the chapter! I had a slight writer's block for this chapter, but I wanted it to be more serious than previous chapters to explore Scarlett's emotions. Hopefully you guys liked it! If I'm not mistaken, a new season of Hetalia starts tomorrow so that'll be cool to watch! Please review and comment on the story! Finally, I'll see you guys next time!
