Chapter 82 - The Doctor's New Department
The Doctor popped back into his office and sat down behind his desk. He took his TARDIS back out of his pocket and looked inside of it.
"Are you still unhappy?" he complained. He sat it in the floor next to him and looked down inside of it.
Someone knocked at the door. "Come in!" he called as he continued to look inside of the box and scratch his chin.
Michelle came in. She stopped when she saw him looking at whatever had his interest. "Did you drop your crutches again?"
He looked up at her, "Oh no. Just thinking about something. Nevermind."
Michelle smiled at him as she walked over to his desk. "Genie alright?"
He smiled, "Yeah, I got there in time to watch them play a game of Hide and Seek. The Presidential Palace has a lot of good places to hide in it. They had so much fun!"
Michelle smiled as she sat down.
"How's your leg?" she asked.
He smiled, "Fine. Just took a pain pill. Don't worry about me." He patted the desktop. "What else before I can get out of here?"
Michelle smiled, "I need to go over several things. I'll be brief because Jake Simmonds is waiting to see you."
"First, these were delivered for you." Michelle handed him a small box.
He opened it to reveal some Japanese throwing knives. He looked surprised. "Wow! Where did these come from?"
She handed him a note which he read aloud. "Thank you for your wonderful invention Doctor Smith. My broken leg and hip were healed in enough time that I could re-enter my Kung Fu tournament and win my scholarship! You have helped me so much because there was no way I would have been able to attend school otherwise. My Father makes these knives. Please accept them as a token of our gratitude."
The Doctor sat back in his chair. "Wow! I never had someone thank me like that before. Wow."
Michelle smiled, "That one machine will make such a difference in so many people's lives. Okay, next thing."
"Genie's ballet school was very sorry to hear about Melissa. They had no idea. Apparently, Genie is their star ballet dancer and they are anxious for any news about her. I didn't want to go into anything to protect your privacy-"
"Good! Thank you!" the Doctor agreed.
"But, they do want to see her. They seemed extremely concerned."
He waved his hand. "Ah. I've got a plan that will fix that. What else?"
Michelle continued, "The violin is getting delivered with the piano this afternoon. In fact, they are probably there now."
"Fantastic! What else?"
"As you say, boring paperwork. Some files for you to go over. Some you have been waiting on." She smiled as he flipped one of the files opened and smiled.
"Indeed! Brilliant!" he said.
"Everything else is in order. I am having candy delivered along some other shopping I figure you probably need by now." Michelle told him.
He pointed at her, "When you order shopping for us, just order for yourself as well. Boys eat all of the time, and I honestly don't really know what I pay you. That would be the best raise I could probably give. Oh, and did you get the candy for your lot?"
Michelle smiled, "Thank you. So much. And yes, I got them candy. I'll be sure to come find you when I need to take them to the dentist."
He laughed, "Ah, a little bit won't hurt them."
Michelle rolled her eyes. "I feel like I'm co-parenting at the moment. Here are some messages. Jake needs to see you and then you are done here! Thomas already has insisted on seeing you tomorrow morning at 10:00."
The Doctor nodded, "Thank you. Send Jake in. Go grab some pizza for your lot and take the rest of the day off. You are brilliant, you are!"
She walked out the door and stopped and turned around. "Oh, I'm sorry. One more thing. That car. What address do you want it sent to?"
He smiled, "I'll get that for you tomorrow. I'll have to double check."
She smiled, "Indeed. Good afternoon. Rest the leg."
Jake walked in with Sam the Quauhtin as the Doctor sat back at the desk and sent a message using his phone.
Jake heard Michelle as he closed the door he said, "You buying a car?"
The Doctor smiled, "Yep! And lost it all in one day. Looks like I'm sending it…..to…" His phone received a message. "Malibu, California. Huh."
Jake and Sam sat down on the couch. The Doctor looked to make sure Michelle was gone and joined them. He propped his leg up on the table between the chairs.
Jake looked at him, "Malibu? Betting with Tony, huh?"
The Doctor smiled and nodded. "Yeah. It was a good bet. Good fun for today. I don't know where I would have put that car, anyway."
Jake nodded, "Pete would have let you keep it at the mansion. I'm sure of it."
The Doctor snapped, "Damn! That's true! Hell, I'll get another one."
Jake laughed at him, "Dorian Ides. We're still tracking him down. Might take a few days. Where is he from?"
The Doctor shrugged his shoulders, "I don't know. You and Jack met him. Where did he sound like he was from?"
Jake crossed his arms and leaned back on the couch. "I don't know. Jack might know. Anyway, I've got people on it."
The Doctor pointed at him, "I'm very serious. Just find him. Don't do anything else!"
Jake held up his hands, "I agree!"
The Doctor rubbed his hands together. "Okay. We've got a bit before Rose's speech, so I wanted to talk to you about some things. I'm forming a new department here. I've decided we need to form several teams. It's only a matter of time before we need them. I've got Thomas Trout running background checks on everyone in this building to hopefully find the people weaved into this mess. He's also going to suggest to me, and you, teams that he thinks would work best."
Jake looked curiously, "Like for example?"
"Like a response team for invasions, one for medical needs, one for kidnappings, one for whatever. My plan is to outfit each member with a watch so they can be deployed immediately to handle the problem. Do the job they are hired for."
Jake waved his hands and shook his head. "No way! Absolutely not! All of these people popping around? In this environment? Are you mad?"
The Doctor smiled, "No. I'm extremely clever. Each watch and agent will be fitted with a separate GPS chip. One for the watch, and one for the agent's tooth. Just like Rose has now. The watch won't work without being on the specific person's arm that wears the other GPS. We will have a new department, which Thomas will be in charge of, which will be able to monitor watch activity at all times. If someone wants to have their GPS deactivated, they have to return the watch. Easy enough."
"What happens if these watches fall into the wrong hands?"
"They are dead bolted shut. No one can open or tamper with them. I can make sure of that. They also will carry their own GPS so we can find them. But, that's a pain in the ass to track down, so each one will have a self destruct and I've also got a master kill switch for all watches."
Jake looked impressed. "Nice. Where is the kill switch?"
The Doctor turned his arm around. "In my watch. I've upgraded. I'll make you a new one as well. Has a proximity detector so you don't land on anyone. It's waterproof. Shows how many people are around. Has a personal shield, oh lots of fun things! And ours, the Quauhtin's, Rose's, Pete's and the select few will not be on Thomas' radar."
Jake nodded his head. "This could work!"
The Doctor smiled, "I think so! I can't keep being the one to solve all of these problems. I will help, of course. But, these people here are perfectly capable of doing most of this. It's only the fear of these few that's preventing them from doing that. I'm ready to get everyone here, back to work. Become an observer, rather than someone who interferes. It's time for us to fight back against this terror and get back to work. Lots have to be done."
Jake got excited. "I love this plan! This could really work! Brilliant! Thomas Trout is perfect for this!"
The Doctor held his hand up for a moment. "Sorry. Rose." He explained.
'Checking in with you. You seem so excited. Are you having a good day?' she asked.
He smiled as he walked over to the small fridge and brought Sam, Jake and himself a bottle of water. He sat back down and drank as he spoke to Rose in his head.
'Yes. Lots of interesting stuff. I can't wait to have a few minutes to catch up with you tonight. Are you about to start your speech?' he asked her.
'Yes, in a bit. I could feel your excitement about something, I just wanted to see what was going on.'
He smiled and rubbed his face, 'I'll fill you in later about it. I lost a bet with Tony, but the game was so much better than the reward. Go give your speech. Let me know if you need me.'
'Genie?' Rose asked.
He thought for a minute. 'Having fun. Probably still riding horses with Howie. She's fine.'
'Okay. Got to go. Love you.'
'Love you, sweetheart. Go knock them out with your brilliance.' He smiled.
He looked back at Jake who was looking at him. "Dude, that's just so weird. Freaks me out, honestly."
The Doctor laughed, "Thus the basis of its' appeal! Ha!"
Jake shook his head. "Weird."
The Doctor smiled and pointed at Jake. "I have a question, Rose and I are wondering, are you are Jack…..?"
Jake looked at him curiously, "Are Jack and I…..what?"
"You know! Are you?" he asked.
Jake smiled at him and looked down at phone that just had a message delivered to it. "Speaking of Jack, he says Rose is about to start. We should go!"
