Epiloge
Life in the Rizzoli-Isles household was busy as usual. But Jane loved it that way. She glanced out of the kitchen window which was above the sink to see her family in the garden. Julia and Sophie had grown into beautiful women she thought.
Julia was trying to relax by the pool, with her baseball cap drawn deep into her face while her girlfriend and Sophies daughter splashed some cool water on her. It was early summer, and they had just opened the pool season. The water was still pretty cold, but Jane herself didn't mind.
Maura did and always made a huge bow around the place. Jane laughed recalling her wife even pulling the deckchair away from the wet spot in fear that their grandkids – or even Jane – would tease her by splashing water over to her. Just like Amanda, who was still together with Julia, did with a deep laugh.
Sophie was watching the scene with a grin. Her alabaster colored skin glistering with the droplets of water in the sun. Jane couldn't see Sophies eyes, but she knew from experience that her eyes were always on her daughter Lucy and her son Peter. They were aged 6 and 4 and usually they usually were full of bad ideas. Like pulling Maura's herbs out of the earth, thinking that they were weeds. Of course, they had watched Angela doing so in her own garden a few days ago and wanted to imitate the action. But Maura had almost dropped dead when she had found the herbs gone.
Jane chuckled slightly as she continued washing the vegetables. Sophies husband Andrew was playing ball with Peter while keeping an eye on the grill. The brunette suddenly felt a pair of arms wrapping around her slim waist.
"Hey." She smiled and felt Maura press a kiss against her neck.
"Hi." Maura replied and Jane could hear the soft smile in her voice. The doc had gone to dress up for the family dinner, which now was always hosted at their home as Angela was getting older. Jane was sure that the rest of the family was already on its way despite the dinner was only scheduled in four hours.
She thought about the things they had to do until dinner was ready and rolled her eyes briefly before relaxing against Maura's front.
Julia came padding into the kitchen, complaining about being teased which made the couple chuckle. Sometimes she still looked like that lanky teenager who got bothered by her sister. Not like the grown-up doctor she had become. Maybe it had to do with coming home, Jane thought. Julia and Amanda, who were both working as MDs in New York were staying the whole week and seemed to slip a tad back into their roles the longer they were here.
Jane glanced at her daughter with a smirk and hitched a breath when she recalled Maura saying something like that, she thought that Julia was pregnant. The brown eyes automatically dropped to the bikini-exposed belly which looked as flat as ever and shook her head.
But when she pulled up her eyes to meet her daughters, she found them smiling calmly. "Yes. We're getting a baby." Julia cheered and Jane felt her heart overflowing with joy. Although she playfully put on a smirk and teased: "Have you heard Maura? Another one! Hell, how we are supposed to survive so many grandkids!?"
Maura giggled and Pulled Julia into her arms. "Congratulations!" she whispered and gently kissed her cheek. "You are going to be a great mother!" Her voice was soft and her words genuine. Jane saw tears brimming in her daughter's eyes and recalled how touchy she had felt when being pregnant. She pulled Julia into a firm hug and rubbed her hand over her daughters back. "I'm happy for you." She whispered. Julia silently wiped away a tear and nodded before turning serious. "You know, Amanda and I decided to take you as role models. You are such great parents."
Jane blushed slightly and Maura went to hug her again. "I can only imagine how hard it must have been with us three." Julia winked at them. "Oh, it was nothing. Piece of Cake. Really!" Jane quickly assured her but saw that Julia didn't buy it. "Ma, I was there, remember?" she laughed softly and recalled them of the time when Will tried to grow weed in their garden.
They all laughed until Sophie walked into the kitchen. "Hell, here you are. I thought you had packed your bag and fled. Which by the way I would perfectly understand." She winked at them and paused. "Although I would have deceived if you guys would have left me behind."
Sophie and Andrew had bought a house just down the road. Jane and Maura got to see the couple and their grandkids more often than Julia and Amanda. Yet, also Sophie seemed to retrieve back into her teenager role as she pouted while putting some juice out of the fridge.
"We were just talking about Wills weed growing experience." Julia told her sister who giggled. "Where is he anyways?" she asked. "In his room, playing computer games." Maura informed her. Will was still in his teenage years. Despite boarding the twenties, he was still enjoying his hormone thriven moments.
He was in his graduation year at college, becoming an IT-specialist. And he usually preferred to be on his own. If Jane hadn't seen some pictures on fb of some parties, he had attended she would have been worried about him being social awkward. But according to what she had seen he wasn't, and this wasn't the reason for him to keep to himself when being at home.
"Its just a phase." She mumbled and recalled hearing him talk to Julia and Amanda on the deck the previous night. Maura shrugged and the four continued with the preparation of food. They joked and laughed and chatted lightly like they always did on such occasions.
After an hour or so, the rest of the family barged into the house, their arms full of presents and food. They were never going to starve with this family, Jane thought with a soft chuckle. She wondered how they were all the same somehow and yet so different. But she loved each and everyone of them with their quirks. That's why she took her time to hug them, enjoy them and drink the atmosphere in.
Her last glance of the day fell on Maura when she was standing in front of the bathroom mirror to go through her nightly routine. Jane was already laying in bed and watching every movement of her wife before turning her eyes to the beautiful body with the long hair that had eventually grown back. "I think we did a pretty good job." She stated with a grin and caught Maura's amused eyes. "You only realize this now?" Maura teased her and Jane chuckled.
Then she closed her eyes and waited for her favorite moment of the day which was when Maura crawled into bed next to her and switched of the light. When they would move into each other's arms and breathe each other in while exchanging a few more kisses before falling asleep.
