Chapter 37: Missed Call

Steve awakens and checks his phone, finding a photo of Amelia stood looking in the mirror, showing off her bump and a message that reads we made it! Wedding day! :D He grins down at it, thinking he will miss these baby bump pictures soon.

Pulling himself out of bed and heading for the shower. He thinks twice but decides to wake Bucky. Entering the hall and knocking at his door, 'time to get up, big day ahead.' He waits for a response and Clint looks down the long hallway, mouth full of something, 'hey, man, you need to get out here. Quick.' Steve peers over in concern, rounding the corner quickly to the kitchen, he's amazed by the array of pastries and baked goods. 'Mimosa?' Sam offers and Steve shrugs, grinning 'sure. Why not!'

'Where's the groom?' Sam asks and Steve smiles, 'sleeping, all the chatting took it out of him last night.' Sam passes him a glass of orange fizz and Steve looks around the room, most of his colleagues there. Suddenly it feels a little sad, like this could be the last time they are all together. Steve thinks back to the envelope on his desk, that needs to be signed and returned by Monday, quickly pushing that thought away.

Clint strolls over, 'hey, long time no see. I just wanted to say, sorry about the meeting that day, but hey, think I'm going to enjoy retirement. And, what I said, of course family is a good reason to sign. The best reason.' Steve appears grateful and admits, 'thanks, think we all said some stuff we didn't mean,' he eyes Sam and The Falcon pacifies, 'all good, man. High pressure situation, I get that.'

Natasha wanders in and grabs a croissant, looking at the spread 'Stark? I'm guessing.' Steve shrugs, Wanda licking her fingers from a sticky bun and smirking, 'waaaaay too nice to be Stark.' Steve smirks and Rhodes calls over, 'so Cap, tell us about this strip tease.' Steve freezes and then blushes, 'how… what? How?' Everyone enjoys his flustered face and stuttering, 'Andi told everyone last night, when you were smooching on the street with your boyfriend,' Sam explains. Steve scoffs, 'great. It wasn't a strip tease. Just a private moment, that now… everyone knows about.'

Natasha takes pity on him, 'Bruce does something similar, every time he changes back.' Bruce looks up embarrassed, 'hey, that's different!' Bruce tries desperately to change the topic, 'when's the baby actually due, Steve? Remind me.' The Captain grins like an idiot, 'about ten days from now.' Natasha looks down, Wanda folds her arms, 'will the baby be strong like you?' Steve hadn't given it too much thought, Amelia told him she wasn't worried, the doctor hasn't said anything and that was enough, but now he's sat there panicking somewhat. 'Cap? Steve? Steve?' Bruce calls, 'don't over think it, you'd know by now. Keep doing what you're doing.'

Steve breathes out a little and admits 'I don't know what I'm doing, not really.' Sam pats his shoulder, 'you're kidding yourself, you're a brilliant dad, truly.' Steve stands up, embarrassed by the fuss, 'look, I'm not the one getting married, should be Buck out here accepting your high praise.' Sam shouts, 'well maybe if he wasn't so bone idle! I mean on his own wedding day, really? Remember when he didn't sleep, kept us up all those nights, trashing his room. We used to take turns in the hall? And now it's like we have a teenager living here.' Steve's eyes float to the clock on the wall and then he replays what Sam just said. 'Yeah…' he answers despondently, looking to the hall.

'Well, I'm off to the bride zone, wish me luck, two sisters, two kids and two moms. What could go wrong?' Natasha declares and Steve smiles at her, thinking of Rosie probably in her dress already, even though it's only eight AM. She pats his arm as she passes and he nods her way.

'I'm off too. See you at the ceremony,' Clint announces, grabbing a pastry for the road. 'Me also, got to go home and then pick up my plus one, the lovely desk lady from the VA gave me another shot,' Sam grins. Steve looks confused, 'they gave you a plus one then? You harped on long enough? And maybe try something other than desk lady.' Sam laughs, 'check out this guy, shelling out dating advice now. Sure, I'll think on it. See you at the venue, don't be late!'

Rhodes disappears next, 'I'll make sure Tony leaves his cave. See you all later.' Steve smiles to himself and looks up at Wanda, she's sifting through documents at the counter, 'mail, for you,' she announces and Steve grabs the pile up, 'thank you. How are you doing?' She nods distantly, 'ok. I think… I uh, I think I might sign, I haven't decided yet, but Vision and...' Steve stops her, 'I get it, trust me, don't justify yourself to me or anyone, for that matter.' She smiles a little, 'I've never been to a real wedding, I'm looking forward to it, got a dress and everything.' Steve smirks, grabbing his mail and leaving, 'see you there!'

He flicks through the pile, disinterested and strolling back to his room, ready for a shower. He looks at Bucky's door and taps once more, 'come on, twenty minutes and I'm coming in!'

Stepping into his own room, Steve dumps the pile of mail on his kitchen counter. He pours a glass of water and his eyes trail to the baby scan tacked to his notice board. He thinks about calling Amelia, but knows how busy she will be, probably stressed and red faced. When he thinks of only two weeks to go, he feels a twist in his stomach. He feels ready and wholly unprepared all at once. He looks about, the sun shining in and he thinks it's a great day for a wedding. Looking at the collage of photos on his wall, he smiles at how far they have all come and he has to pinch himself that Bucky is actually getting married today.

He looks back to the mail and spots a brown package, reaching for it casually, wondering what it is. Handwritten and addressed to him. Flipping it over, there's no sender, just a stamp that reads congratulations. He wonders if it's a wedding gift, but why would it come to him. Placing his glass down, he tears it open. Pastel coloured confetti falls out all over the floor, scattering on his bare feet and he pouts in thought and then confusion. Reaching inside, he pulls out a thumb-drive, there's nothing else inside and Steve turns it over in his palm. The top side reading

Steve's confused and shakes the envelope, more confetti littering the ground. He looks to the TV in his room, questioning if he can watch it here, eyeing the screen he spots a small opening in the side that looks about right. He smiles when it fits.

He grabs the remote and folds his arms, waiting for the movie to begin. Still at a loss, he waits for footage of Andi as a kid or something her friends have made.

The image is grainy, old footage, Steve discerns. The date reads 16th December, 1991. It means nothing to Steve and he frowns, racking his brain for an idea. Trying to figure out how old Andi and Amelia would have been then.

The video footage shows a car careering into view and smashing into a wall, the bonnet flying up and crinkling like it's made of paper. The car sets a blaze and Steve can't comprehend what he's looking at. It appears to be security footage. The date must mean something, maybe not to him but to someone.

A motorcycle arrives and a man in black climbs off. Steve checks the date and suddenly he feels weightless, his stomach dropping, like falling from a tight rope. He feels a chill climb his back. He grips his forearms, forcing himself to watch and confirm his worse suspicions. Swallowing and trying to keep focus, eventually he can't look anymore, as the man savagely beats a wounded innocent on the ground beside the car.

The creature in black drags the victim back to his burning car, he circles to the other side and Steve can't make out what's happening, but he has a good idea. As the figure approaches the security camera, his face becomes unobscured by night and Steve's reflection in the screen merges with the face of his best friend.

Reminding himself it's the Winter Soldier and not Bucky, he watches as the stranger points the gun at the camera.

The footage cuts out, the screen turning black, but quickly starting again, as if it's looped to torment him. Steve stands there astounded by what he's just witnessed. Knowing is one thing, but seeing it is another. He quickly springs into action, grabbing the packaging and removing the drive at high speed. Panicking about what to do next, how to continue, how to dispose of the stone-cold evidence.

'Umm, FRIDAY, please wake B… Sargent Barnes.' He rushes into his own bedroom, looking around and hiding the materials in his suit bag, zipping it closed and storming into the hallway. Banging loudly on Bucky's door, 'let me in, Buck.' There's no response and Steve steps back, looking at the door, fearful of what's behind it. 'Bucky!' He bashes it again, harder this time. He knocks it repeatedly, 'come on, open up.'

Wanda comes out of her own room, 'why the banging?' Steve just looks at her, exasperated and frustrated. Beating the door with his fist again. Returning to his own room, he finds his key card and decides to let himself in. Wanda gives up, returning to her room, 'whatever.'

The door swings open and Steve swallows, something's off. An eerie silence. He looks around, the bed is made, there are gifts on the coffee table, but no Bucky. Steve checks the entire flat, fearing the worst. Bracing as he opens the bathroom door, but nothing. He looks about further and opens Bucky's bedside cabinet. It's empty. No rings, no vows, no photos, no lone screwdriver.

He breathes frantically. 'FRIDAY, where is he?' The AI doesn't respond and Steve calls louder, 'FRIDAY! when did Sargent Barnes leave?' The AI explains, 'Sargent Barnes departed from the facility at three nineteen AM this morning.' Steve closes his eyes, Wanda peering in the open door. 'Are you ok? What's happening?' Steve rudely shuts the door on her, and he leans against it, looking around again and trying to catch up. He looks across and spots a similar package to his on the sofa, this one has a discarded ribbon around it, addressed to James Barnes. Same packaging, but this time marked

1 of 4

Steve grabs it quickly, scared who else may have seen it and suddenly wondering where the other two copies have been sent. He can't see the drive anywhere and he hopes Bucky had the clarity to destroy it. Without a moment of doubt, he tears the package to shreds and buries it deep in the trash can, hoping no one goes rooting through it.

Steve wipes his mouth with the back of his hand, he needs to find Bucky and he needs to find any other copies.

He rushes out the door, bumping into the young girl, still waiting there, arms folded in concern. 'Where are you going?' He stares at her, but says nothing, locking Bucky's door and walking away briskly. She calls after him and he misses it. He races to R&D, still barefoot but trying to look as normal as possible. He bumps into Bruce in a long hallway beside the labs, 'woah, you ok?' Steve nods, 'Tony in there?' Bruce agrees, 'he was.'

Steve bursts in and sighs out at the sight of Tony. He bends over and catches his breath, 'hey, it's Mr Freeze. You ok, buddy? You don't look too good.' Steve nods, straightening, 'yeah, I'm fine, are you fine?' Tony nods, 'I'm mighty fine, shouldn't you be washing Barnes' hair or something, big day is upon us.' Steve struggles to smile and agrees 'you're right, I've got to go, I just… I wanted to... I… I'll see you at the ceremony, right?' Tony looks at Steve, 'yes, why? What's going on? Are you ok? Is this because Barnes is marrying someone else? It was never going to happen, Steve. Would have by now. Just accept it, he's in love with someone else and she has a couple things you just can't offer.'

Steve exhales unevenly, thinking of Andi sadly, unsure what his next move is. 'I have to go,' he announces, leaving suddenly and Tony smirks after him, 'FRIDAY, play some tunes, will you? It's going to be a good day, I can feel it.'

Steve returns to the row of apartments, planning to check Bucky's again, just in case. Wanda is still stood outside, leaning against the wall glumly, her hair lank and wet. 'Good, you're back. I loaned Andrea my hairdryer, I need it back, why isn't he answering?' She points to Bucky's door and Steve stares at her blankly, wondering what to do. He's catching his breath and he can see the questions on the tip of her tongue. He can't deal with this solely alone. He checks his phone, but it's blank. For the first time in five years, no one wants him on the one day he needs someone, anyone. Steve looks up and around, hearing male voices, 'come in here.' He tugs Wanda inside and she looks worried, 'Steve, seriously, what's going on?' She peers about the room, realising its empty.

He breathes out, looking around again, the room still silent and vacant. 'He's… he's not here, he's gone.' Wanda opens her mouth to ask, Steve explains 'I don't think he's coming back.' She stares about and realises who he means, 'but the wedding...' Steve shakes his head, 'I don't… I need to find him. I can't give up. Do me a favour, call him, just keep calling. Get ready as planned, don't let anyone in here, understand? Act normal, keep calling him. Don't stop!' She nods numbly, uttering 'but… Andrea?'

Steve pauses, struggling to swallow, his mouth dry. 'I know, I know, but I'll find him, I'll put this right, trust me. Just don't tell anyone. I can fix this.' Steve rushes back to his own room, asking the AI again of any sightings.

He decides to get ready, believing it's best to rush around New York in his suit, still confident he can put this right. As he begins to move away, he feels something on the floor. Looking down, he frowns at a folded piece of paper with Andi's name on it. 'Now what? He questions aloud, bending and looking at the note. 'Shit.'

Andi is sat in Amelia's lounge, her hair in bendy rollers. Amelia is trying to take some photos, 'they aren't very good, I'm not like you. My hand shakes!' Her sister smiles, 'rest it on your bump!' Natasha asks 'you even having photos?' Andi waves her hand, wanting her champagne glass and Amelia sniffs it, as she passes it across. 'Yeah, someone I was at college with. Who actually finished and makes money taking photos, can you believe? Only informal ones, Bucky and I agreed. No awful line ups.' Natasha lies back on the couch, her hair loosely pinned. Amelia sighs and flops down beside her, they can hear Evelyn bickering with poor Dana and Rosie comes running in, 'now?' She asks excitedly and Amelia grabs a cushion, groaning into it. 'No, it's too early for your dress, please don't ask me again, not until Nana and Grandma have their dresses on, at least! I don't want chocolate paw prints on it.' Rosie slinks away, sulking sadly.

'You nervous?' Natasha inquires and the blonde wiggles her freshly painted toes, 'only to get on with it. I don't like the waiting, you know?' Natasha smirks, 'no, I don't know. Never been engaged, well there was that one time for a job…' Amelia grins between them, rubbing her belly, 'you doing ok, Mia?' Andi worries and she smiles, 'yes, I feel like a new woman, got a haircut and I'm footloose and fancy free.' Natasha raises a brow and Amelia admits 'fine, I'm hungry, heavy and very much tied down, but hey. So what, everyone needs a spectre at the feast.' Andi feels bad for her sister, 'well, you look lovely, happy and healthy, I think you will go over again, another late Miller.' Amelia looks offended, 'speak for yourself, I'm never late!'

'Did you see Bucky this morning?' Andi asks hopefully, Natasha shakes her head, 'no. Saw Steve, please just have this baby already, before someone punches the cheerful grin off his face.' Amelia giggles, 'aww be nice, he's so happy, I love it. I'll miss him being so wonderful, not that he isn't always, but he's turned it up to eleven and I love it.'

Dana comes in, shooing Amelia's feet from the coffee table, as she accidentally kicks makeup and hair supplies. The three look up, she's in a beige two piece, 'girls, think it might be time to shake a leg, it's ten thirty.' Amelia double takes, 'what?' Andi grins, 'it's fine, I knew. We have time. Why don't you two go get dressed, Dee is going to help with my hair, I'll do my make-up and I'll put my dress on at the warehouse.' Amelia rubs her face, remembering it's still free of make-up, 'don't call it the warehouse, sounds like a brothel.' Andi laughs and Natasha moves off, heading upstairs to change. Amelia looks up at the sound of her phone. She searches about and then realises it's in her robe pocket. Reaching for it, she can see it's Steve and smiles. 'I'll see you in a minute,' she creeps into the hall and answers, 'hey! Yes, we are fine, yes, I'm still pregnant.'

Steve takes a deep breath, 'where are you?' He sounds fraught, 'uhh, at home, getting ready, just about to kick things up a notch, I'm not even dressed yet, so haven't got long. What about you? Don't forget to get to the venue early for the um flower people.'

'Yes, yes, I remember, have you spoken to uh, to Bucky?' Amelia stills, 'no? why? Everything's ok?' Steve nods, forgetting she can't see him. 'Steve? You're scaring me, is everything alright?' Steve swallows and answers, 'all good, just checking, he thought he left his vows at our place, but we have them, they are here, got to go.' He hangs up quickly and Amelia stares at the phone, 'weird.' Rosie reappearing and looking up at her sweetly, 'fine! Ok, dress time, but don't get it dirty!'

Steve looks at Wanda and she shrugs, 'great, now what? Was your plan to freak her out?' Steve throws his phone onto Bucky's couch, 'fuck!' He shouts, making Wanda jump a little, she's never seen or heard him like this. 'What do I do? How could he do this?' Wanda shrugs, 'why would he do this?' Steve won't answer that part, he made a promise to Bucky, they agreed to bury it. His mind floats back to the other two thumb-drives, 'I have to get to the venue,' Steve announces, and Wanda's mouth drops open, 'what? You can't leave me, what do I tell people? You can't just hope he will turn up, you have to tell her.'

Steve looks at her earnestly, 'don't say anything, just play along, act normal, you're excited about today, remember? He might still show, he might be there, God I hope he's there. I have to believe he will do the right thing. He's a good guy, he loves her, I know he does.' Steve sounds like he's trying to convince himself. Wanda nods, unconvinced and as Steve reaches the door she asks, 'but what if he's not there?' Steve licks his lips, her voice is laced with sadness and he can only imagine how Andi will feel 'then I don't know.'

Steve is at the venue, pacing repeatedly. He keeps calling Bucky, but nothing. He phones in at the tower, but nothing. The flower shop colleagues finish, and Steve tries to look impressed, nodding and thanking them, the family he met at the shop that day keen to chat. Steve shrugs at them and keeps his responses short and sweet. He pulls his phone out again, this time staring at Amelia's number, maybe she will know what to do. He can't put that on her, she's likely to go into early labour.

He looks across to the main door and baulks at the sight of the first few guests. He wonders who arrives so early to a wedding and what he should do now. Before he can stop himself, he's walking forward and showing them to their seats, as if nothing's wrong. Passing them an order of service.

Felicity, the wedding planner walks over to him and Steve perks up, hoping she might tell him Bucky's here. 'The bridal party just arrived, they are in the back room, everything ok out here?' Steve nods, 'yeah, yeah. Could I uh, get a water?' She nods and backs away, watching him suspiciously. He calls back to her, 'oh, umm, if anyone mentions the groom, can you just let them know he's getting some air, bit nervous, you know?' Steve can feel the lie roll off his tongue easily and he hates himself. His phone sounds and he desperately looks for it in his multiple suit pockets, 'Bucky?'

'No, it's me.' Steve closes his eyes at Wanda's voice. 'Well?' He asks keenly, 'nothing, he's not here. Steve, what if he's been… I don't know, taken?' Steve closes his eyes, but knows from the note and the ripped package, he's gone. If he's honest, he knew last night he wouldn't be here, he sensed it, he should have done more.

He hangs up, cutting her off and spotting Scott arriving. Walking over to him briskly, 'do me a favour, Lang, hand these out, one per person, people can sit where they like.' Steve passes him a pile of orders of service and Scott is unsure, 'umm, ok, don't you have…' Steve thanks him and notices Sam entering, along with his plus one. Steve storms across, 'hey man, this is…' Steve cuts him off, 'need to speak to you, now. Nice to meet you, left or right, wherever you want. Don't pick a side, pick a seat.' Steve recites and he nearly drags Sam out of the venue, crossing the street and tucking around a corner. 'This is extreme, what warrants this level of secrecy? Shouldn't you be in there, greeting people, handing out running orders?'

'Bucky's gone.' Steve rattles off and Sam looks up slowly, staring at a flustered Steve. 'Gone? As in…'

'As in, gone. Not here, not coming, gone. I keep looking, but now there's flowers, guests. What do I do?' Sam looked confused, 'how do you know he's gone?' Steve shakes himself, 'he isn't at home, I can't get him, he's just gone.' Sam's still confused, 'was his suit there?'

Steve stops and looks up, 'what?' Sam explains, 'his suit? Was his suit there?' Steve shakes his head confused, 'no, but…' Sam pats Steve's cheek patronisingly 'then he'll be here, wait and see, you're making a huge deal out of nothing, just chill out and show people to their seats, it's all good, man.' Steve wishes he could believe that. Sam straightens and tugs at his jacket, 'I need to go back inside, my date is waiting, I will keep this between us, I think you'll be embarrassed by this tomorrow. I've never seen you so out of sorts, it's off putting.' Steve looks down at himself, he can feel sweat on his back, tension in his shoulders, a tremor in his hands. He sighs and watches Sam cross back to the warehouse. More and more people arriving outside. Steve looks on as Clint and Sam high five, Sam shaking hands with Laura.

Steve decides maybe Sam's right, maybe he will show, it's Bucky. His sense of loyalty has always outweighed everything. Somehow, he manages to convince himself that Sam's correct, he begins to cross the street, when his phone lights up, Steve exhales in relief, hoping this is the call he's been waiting on. 'Hello?'

Amelia pokes her head out the door, 'lots of people here, this is really happening, Mrs Andi Barnes.' Rosie jumps up and down, her blossom pink shift dress spinning with her. Amelia notices her tiny shoe is unbuckled and tries to bend, 'Natasha, could you?' The red head is up and on it before Amelia can even finish.

'You look lovely, Rosalyn,' Natasha smiles at her and taps her nose, she giggles, 'so do you.'

'Ow, mom!' Amelia looks over, her mother behind a screen of wooden panels, pulling her sister into her wedding dress. 'Andrea, it needs to be tight, you don't want one flopping out.' Amelia looks embarrassed and smiles at Rosie. 'Mom! Don't say that on my wedding day!'

Amelia rubs her tummy, wincing a little. Natasha asks, 'you ok there? Need a seat?' Amelia nods and accepts the offered chair. Peter lets himself in, rubbing his hands, 'how we doing, girls?'

'Dad! Mom is trying to kill me!' Andi calls from the makeshift changing room. He looks concerned and Dana shakes her head, 'ignore her.' He checks in with his wife and Amelia asks, 'Steve here?' Peter thinks on it, 'yeah, but I've only seen him from afar and not for a while.' She nods, 'Bucky's here, right?' Amelia asks and she props her feet up with a tired sigh, groaning and her dad asks worriedly, 'you ok? You look a little warm in the face.' She smiles, 'just my back hurts, too much standing, thanks though.' Amelia peers up at her dad, 'hey! Nice suit, not brown! You look great.' He grins proudly and flashes his under shirt, Rosie cheering and Natasha smirking over.

'I'm coming out!' Andi announces and then Evelyn appears to a disappointed chorus of 'oh.' She frowns, 'charming, she's coming, hang on. I hope I look nice too.' Evelyn navigates the small room, toys, bags, clothes everywhere, 'honestly, girls, this is worse than your old bedroom.' Amelia scoffs, grabbing a pack of cookies and offering them out, 'watch your dress!' Her mom warns. Natasha laughs as Amelia rolls her eyes, just like her daughter did earlier that day.

Andi steps out, her white skirt, long and floating gently behind her. Her hair is wavy and covers her bare shoulders. The deep V of her dress showing off her long neck and defined collar bone. The small diamond details of the top half catch the sun light from the old factory windows, she brushes it off carefully. 'Do I look ok?'

Natasha doesn't even check, before offering Amelia a tissue, 'you look amazing, I want to hug you, but I won't get up, I will lose the last of my battery power, and possibly the contents of my bladder.' Andi grins at her sister, 'what will Bucky think? Think he'll like it?' Peter smiles at her, shaking his head slightly in disbelief. 'He will be stunned. I know you will tell me off, but some may say he's a lucky boy!' Andi looks up at him, recalling the first time she met Bucky.

'Hey, cutie, who's your friend?' Andi asks. Rosie and Bucky both look up, at the woman stood over them. Andi is wiping her mouth and screwing a lid on her drink. Bucky is shocked to see the woman in front of him, she just appeared, how had he missed that? 'This is Lucky!' Rosie announces proudly, 'he's sad cos he has no snacks in his bag,' Rosie concludes. 'Is that so?' Andi asks slowly as she turns to the dark-haired man, 'and are you?'

'What?' he peers up at her, terrified, 'lucky?' she asks smugly.

'I'm the lucky one,' Andi whispers to herself. When she looks up, everyone in the room seems glazy eyed and Andi jumps, waving 'you lot, pull it together, it's a happy day! Celebrate.'

Amelia stands up slowly, struggling, 'well, I'm going to check in with Steve and then we can get this show moving.' Andi looks at her in concern, 'you sure you're ok?' She nods, 'yes, all good.' Natasha looks up, smirking, 'uh, Mia, your dress…' Amelia peers down at her pale pink bridesmaid dress, two straps on her shoulders and what she deems two pointless straps slipped off her shoulders. She looks confused and her mother bustles over, 'you're unzipped.' Amelia recalls now that it's too tight and verging on pinching, but rather than admitting it, she just left it undone.

Evelyn asks her to turn around and she carefully moves her eldest daughter's hair, thinking back to when she'd plait it before school. The older woman pauses and Amelia calls, 'mom, you ok? Can you do it? Is it a two-man job? I can lie down, that might help.' Evelyn shakes herself, 'no, it's fine.' She zips the dress up as Amelia breathes in and Rosie sits on the floor pulling petals from her bouquet.

Amelia turns back, 'thanks, mom. Right, I'll go the back way, keep the element of surprise, I'll be back. Rosie, be good please!' Amelia leaves, stepping outside and enjoying the fresh air. She bends over and rubs her back, her face scrunching in discomfort. 'No, not today, got things to do, just stay in there for now,' she jokingly wishes. Wandering down the side of the building, she's excited to see Steve. For him to see the dress she's been poured into in the worse way and for her to see him in another dangerously attractive suit.

'Bucky?' Steve answers desperately. There's silence on the other end, 'look, it's not too late, come back and we can make it right, where are you?' Steve looks back over to the venue, checking he can't see his friend anywhere.

'Did you know?'

Steve's brow pinches, the voice not the one he expected. It's a low voice, the words spat at the receiver.

'Tony?' Steve asks in confusion.

'Did you know?' The voice repeats louder and angrier. Steve swallows, closing his eyes and summoning the lie 'know what? What are you talking about?'

'I just opened a package.' Steve leans back against a red brick wall, his heart racing, a thumping in his ears. His brow furrows, wondering who would do this. Tony keeps talking, 'it was an error, addressed to her…' Steve perks up, 'wait, who? Addressed to who?'

'Tell me the truth, did you know?' Tony grits out and Steve sighs, 'I don't know what you are talking about.'

'Barnes!' Tony shouts and Steve hears a clatter in the background. 'He'll pay for this, I will make him pay for this, so help me God.' Tony seethes and Steve fumbles for words, 'Tony, whatever you think you know…'

'I don't think, I know, I saw him! My parents… my mo…' Tony's voice catches and Steve presses a palm to his face, trying to hold it together. 'I saw him, with my own two eyes. Does she know?'

Steve pauses, 'who?' Tony sighs angrily, 'Andrea?' Steve realises this is over and shakes his head, confessing quietly 'no, she doesn't know. She has no idea.' Tony understands what this means and the line goes silent, 'but you did, you knew. You let that animal live under my roof. Work with me.' Steve desperately scrabbles to answer, 'he only recently remembered, he didn't know! Tony, I'm so sorry. I didn't always know, I didn't, I swear. You have my word. He is beside himself over it.'

'Your word means nothing! Liar!' Steve pulls the phone away, Tony's voice screeching in his ear.

Tony sniffs on the other end, 'I'll never forgive you for this, Steve. We were friends.' Steve crushes his eyes closed.

'I want Barnes.' The anger in Tony's voice runs through Steve with a cold chill, he admits 'he's not here, Tony, he's not here, I don't think he's coming back. I got a tape too, you did, Bucky did and now he's gone.' Steve looks up, spotting Amelia across the street, looking for him and hugging a newly arrived guest.

'Don't come back here,' Tony warns, Steve tries to persuade him, 'no, I trusted you. We are done. Tell the PA, I'm sorry.' There's silence, 'I'm coming for him, Steve. He better run.' The line goes dead after the last menacing threat. Steve drops the phone, staring at the handset, swallowing slowly. He pulls at his hair, groaning in frustration, never feeling so out of control of a situation. Steve thinks he did this, he told him to lie. Looking back to Amelia, he knows this is done, time to be honest. He's out of options and time.

AN: So… no Bucky, Tony knows the truth about his parents' deaths, Amelia's VERY pregnant, Steve is barely holding it together, Andi thinks everything is great and there's a venue full of guests... so yeah.
