That Nikki carried Tyler upstairs while Brett carried the two small overnight bags to the truck. He let himself in the front door to say goodbye to Tyler.
"Good luck," Owen said.
"I think she'll like it," Brett said.
"She will," Owen said, "I did the same when I proposed to Teddy. Nikki babysat and I took Teddy for a night away. You'll be at Megs for dinner tomorrow?"
"We will," Brett said.
"Breathe she'll say yes," Owen said, "I know my sister. Nikki wouldn't ask you to move in if she didn't see a future together."
"Daddy," Tyler yelled.
"Mommy and I are going to go for the night," Brett said, "your good with uncle Owen and auntie Teddy."
"Bye bye little man," Nikki said, giving her son a kiss before passing him to Teddy.
"Go have fun," Teddy said shoeing the couple out the door.
"We will," Brett said.
"Thank you for babysitting,"Nikki said.
As they were driving Nikki asked, "where are we going?"
"It's a surprise," Brett smiled.
They kept driving and making plans for the next few weeks. Brett agreed they could go see Farokes football game the next day because Meghan would have Tyler in the afternoon because Teddy and Owen were both on call during the day.
Brett pulled into their favourite park and took her hand as they walked along silently just enjoying eachothers company and being together.
"Where are we going," Nikki asked as Brett turned down a trail.
"You'll see," Brett smiled, "it's a surprise not much further."
"I trust you," Nikki said.
"I know you do," Brett said.
They reached the look out over the ocean and sat on the bench talking. As they sat Brett got down on one knee and took a small box out of his pocket, "Nikki. Nicole Alexandra McRae, I love you. I have loved you as long as I've known you. I want forever with you and to grow old with you. I want our adventures together and the quiet days at home. I love you. Nikki will you marry me?"
"Yes," Nikki said, "I do yes."
She threw her arms around him and kissed him passionately.
"I love you," Brett whispered between kisses.
"I love you too,' Nikki said, "we're really engaged?"
"We are," Brett said, "I just need to put this on you."
Nikki held out her left hand and let Brett put the ring on her.
"It's perfect," Nikki said, "I love it."
"We should go," Brett said, "this is only our first stop."
"Our first stop," Nikki asked.
"We have a night planned," Brett smiled, "dinner, dancing, night in a hotel."
"Brett," Nikki said.
"Time to celebrate us," Brett said.
"I was not expecting this," Nikki said.
"I've wanted to ask for weeks," Brett said, "I just had to make sure tonight would be perfect first."
"It's you," Nikki said, "it's perfect because it's you. I want life with you. Our life together."
"We will have our life together," Brett agreed, "the three of us."
"You mean it with the three of us," Nikki said, "Tyler. What do we tell him?"
"That mommy and daddy are getting married," Brett said, "he knows we love him and we're always there."
"We're really doing this," Nikki said.
"We are," Brett beamed, kissing her again.
They walked back to the truck and drove to where they were having dinner. They chatted and dreamed and planned for their future together. For their family, Tyler and another baby or two one day, after the wedding.
Walking back to the hotel Brett asked, "do you think I could adopt Ty so he's legally my son?"
"I love the idea," Nikki said, "I don't know if it's possible. Can we call the lawyer and ask?"
"Think about it," Brett said.
"You're his daddy," Nikki said, "how many times today did you say my fiancé?"
"I like saying it," Brett smiled.
"So do I," Nikki beamed, "what do we tell people at school Monday?"
"We need a riddle for the kids," Brett laughed, "how did you tell your classes about Tyler?"
"I never did," Nikki said, "some figured it out faster than others. I started talking about going on leave in February but never did a formal announcement."
"Do you want to announce this," Brett said.
"Yes," Nikki said, "I like the riddle idea or to solve the clues to get the words."
"Once the first block knows," Brett said.
"I know. I'll tell Julie tomorrow night," Nikki said, "she'll be all over us Monday morning."
"Have you told your family," Brett asked.
"I want to in person," Nikki beamed, "should we call yours?"
"Tomorrow," Brett said, " tonight let's just be us. We haven't been alone in a long time."
"We haven't," Nikki agreed, "why don't I go get ready for bed?"
"You take forever I'll go first," Brett said.
Sunday morning they woke up slowly sleeping in for the first time in months. Nikki in Bretts arms with her head in his chest. She soon realized they were still naked having not bothered putting their pajamas back in the night before. She began to kiss her fiancé gently waking him up with kisses soon he was on top of her covering her whole body with kisses again.
They had a slow morning and met Evelyn at her house to pick up Tyler.
"Mom," Nikki yelled, "Brett asked me to marry him."
"She said yes," Brett finished.
"Congratulations both of you," Evelyn beamed, "let's see darling."
Nikki showed her mom her left hand.
"It's stunning," Evelyn gushed.
"I was so surprised," Nikki admitted, "it was perfect."
Brett had picked Tyler up, "guess what little dude. Mommy and Daddy are going to get married."
"Daddy," Tyler said.
"Yes," Brett said, "we're back."
Nikki took Tyler from her fiance, "we're home little man. I missed you. It was a good thing we went away for a night. Daddy asked me to marry him and I said yes. "
"Mama," Tyler said snuggling into Nikki.
"Should we get you home for your nap," Nikki asked.
"Teddy had to get them all up early when she got called in," Evelyn said, "something major is going on only Nathan wasn't called."
"Dinner," Nikki asked.
"Bring all kids to Megs," Evelyn said.
"So we'll see you there at five," Nikki smiled.
"We will," Evelyn beamed, "congratulations again."
