Conversations on a Balcony

Abby was vibrating with excitement. Supergirl's hands were shaking. Cat shook her head in amusement.

"Are you two ok?" she asked, cocking her head with a little twist of her lips.

"Yeah," Kara replied, rubbing her hands together and bouncing on the balls of her feet. "This is going to be epic!"

Abby grinned and nodded, looking up at her mother. She was dressed in a miniature version of Supergirl's suit, a gift from Alex with cape and all, and she looked adorable. Cat had taken what seemed like hundreds of pictures of her wife and wife's Mini-Me before she'd let them out the door to start their training session.

Now, the three of them, carried by Kara into the desert, were ready to begin. The hero crouched in front of her daughter and stroked her hair back from her face. "You and I share something very special, Abby," she began. "I'm from another planet and you're half of me. That gives you powers that are like mine. You're stronger than kids your age, you can move fast, you can fly, you have heat vision and freeze breath. All of these powers make you very special."

"I know, /ieiu/," Abby replied solemnly.

"But you also need to know, Baby Girl, that with all of these powers comes a lot of responsibility and if you want to use your powers, there are some things you always have to remember."

Cat stayed quiet but she rested her hand on her wife's shoulder in silent solidarity and nodded along.

"Number one, NEVER EVER use your powers to hurt people intentionally. Always do good in this world, My Love. Always try to calm people down... even if they're very, very angry... before fighting."

Abby nodded her understanding, blue eyes locked with her mother's. "I understand."

"Number two, always protect humans. Humans are fragile compared to us and we need to do everything in our power to keep them safe. And our family is on the top of that list.

"Number three... never use your powers for personal gain. We work for what we have in this world and what we have, we earn fair and square. As a family, we're very fortunate to not have to worry about money but we're the exception. There are a lot of people out there who have nowhere to live and don't know when they're going to be able to eat next. We are no better than those people and, if we can help, we always should. Understand?"

"Yes," the little girl replied solemnly.

"Good. The fourth thing... if something bad is happening or you see injustice, don't look the other way, Abigail. Always help if you can."

Kara smiled then and stood tall. "I think that's enough for now. How about we try some of that flying?"

Abby jumped up and down, clapping her hands. "Yes, /ieiu/!"

Cat circled them like a fashion photographer, getting more pictures as Kara laughed softly and shook her head. "Better stand back, Mom." She let herself float a couple of feet off the ground and playfully crooked a finger at her daughter. "Let's play Tag! Catch me!"

Abby laughed as her /ieiu/ flew away, staying close to the ground and looking back over her shoulder with a teasing grin. The little girl, lifted her fist and shot after her mother with a delighted giggle that made her Mom melt.

Cat watched delightedly, taking video as Kara flew in circles and zigzags, flying horizontally, close to the ground... and then a little higher as she watched her daughter gain confidence. Abby chased her all around the area until, to Kara's utmost surprise, pulled a bait and switch on her and managed to grab her cape.

"I got you, /ieiu!" the little girl yelled, allowing Kara to tow her a for a while before the hero slowed down and pulled her daughter into her arms to hug her. "Great job, Baby Girl!" she praised as she lazily barrel-rolled them through the air. "You were so awesome!"

Abby kissed her cheek and hugged her hard. "Thank you for playing with me, /ieiu/!" Then she grinned cheekily. "Now, you catch me!"

And Kara tried... she really tried... but her daughter was always one step ahead and at the end of the game, as the hero landed next to her wife to just watch her child hover in the air above her and blow kisses to her, she looked at the older woman in awe. "Look at our kid," she said.

Cat didn't bother to hide the tears on her cheeks. "She's amazing... and she's going to change the world."

"Hell yeah, she is," Supergirl replied. "Just like her mom."

They shared a soft kiss and then Kara shot back into the air to begin the game again.
