The day after, the five sisters were informed of what happened to their mother. After a quick funeral, they were left alone to wallow in their sadness.

"Waaaah!"

Ichika:"Mommy!"

Yotsuba:"Uu-uu…"

Miku:"..."

Nino:"She didn't get better…"

Yotsuba:"She's gone…"

Itsuki:"No, she's here."

Yotsuba:"?"

Itsuki:"She's still here. Mom lives on inside of us…I will...I will become mom."

Miku:"Itsuki…"

Nino:"What's going to happen to us now…?"

Ichika:"Maybe grandpa's place…?"

Miku:"You think we can all go…?"

Yotsuba:"What do you mean?"

Miku:"Grandpa already has a hard time taking care of himself...It's possible that…"

Nino:"...We might all become separated."

"Pardon the intrusion."

The five sisters turned to see a face that had shown up a few times throughout their life. A man in a suit with dead eyes walked in.

Maruo:"Although we have seen each other a number of times, this may be the first time I've spoken to you like this. Though in Yotsuba-kun's case, we last spoke during the school trip."

Yotsuba:"Ah..."

Maruo took a look at the picture of Rena that was there. Without saying anything, he turned back towards the girls.

Maruo:"I will be taking responsibility for you all."

Maruo was unable to keep his promise. Following Rena's passing, Maruo would not return to work for a couple of weeks. Despite how he felt, he knew he needed to upkeep the other promise he made to Rena. He had officially adopted the five daughters. He would buy a two floored apartment in order for the girls to all have their own rooms for the very first time. He also employed his butler, who had previously only helped him occasionally as his lawyer. Now, he was employed full time in order to take care of the girls.

Ebata:"Will you be fine being away from them so often?"

Maruo:"I will be very busy again once I go back to work. I won't be able to play the part of a father too well. Besides, I…"

Ebata:"Hm?"

Maruo didn't say what the other reason was, but he was constantly thinking about it from the moment he adopted the five. All five of them, to him, looked like Mini-Renas. This caused Maruo great pain. He would constantly blame himself for not being competent enough, for not having found a cure in time, for not being able to save her from being assaulted, for not reaching out to her sooner.

Now, Maruo had adopted five girls with her face. All five were a reminder to his failures. He couldn't look at them in the face. Once Maruo came back to work, he saw a face he thought he had never seen before. This was a woman in a suit with short, black pixie hair, glasses and very pointy teeth. Despite Maruo not knowing who she was, the woman quickly paced towards him and upon reaching him, slapped him with all her might. Reeling back from the pain, the woman was being taken away by security, but she would scream something that would stay with Maruo for a while.

"You killed her! Doctor, my ass! You killed Nakano-sensei! You worthless piece of shit, I swear you'll pay for this!"

It would be later that week that Maruo would learn that that was the girl known as Shimoda, one of his schoolmates. The girl had previously had long, blonde hair and would always dress against the school rules.

Maruo:"So that was another life Nakano-sensei touched. And I took that away."

During the next month, it was clear that Maruo's performance on duty had dropped considerably. From making mistakes that he'd never made before to coming late for the first time, Maruo's health was taken into question, but he didn't have any sickness. No, it was something far worse. Everything Maruo had worked for was gone. The woman he loved for more than a decade was gone, and he believed it was all his fault. He would eventually take another break. At this point, Maruo was wondering if he would quit his current job. His qualifications reached quite far, so he could get another job with his recommendations if needed. And his riches would allow him to live without a job for many years, even with five daughters. As he was contemplating over the resignation letter, one of the quintuplets came down to meet him. After Maruo's initial shock at her face, he came to his senses.

Maruo:"And you were…?"

Nino:"I'm Nino, the second daughter!"

Maruo:"Of course. What do you need?"

Nino:"Well, I was wondering...Do you think I could become a doctor like you?"

This statement shocked Maruo. The girls didn't know at the time it was him behind her final surgery, but he still questioned himself.

Nino:"You looked really cool that one time I saw you do a bit of your work...and I've wanted to help people with illnesses...People like our mama."

Maruo:[I...But I killed her.]

Nino:"So I decided that I want to be a doctor too!"

Nino's words were almost like therapy. Despite the face being familiar, and despite the subject being of his greatest shame, Nino's enthusiasm gave Maruo a reason to keep going. He would tell her to attempt another career, as he did not want for her to suffer, but he promised something.

Maruo:"In exchange for you giving it up, I promise I'll be the best doctor you've ever seen."

Although she was down from Maruo's answer, she nodded. After that night, Maruo decided to keep his job. There were other people that needed help, he didn't want the five girls to have another life even close to what they had before...and he still had to finish something…

One day, he received word from Nino about how the principal of their high school was taking advantage of Yotsuba, leading him to send them to another school. Combined with their dwindling grades, he eventually lost hope in them. He began to believe they couldn't pass on their own. So, in one last effort, he hired a tutor...That tutor would later help him see the true value of his daughters…Now, he wanted nothing more than to see them succeed.

Maruo:[Losing faith in those girls was the worst insult I could have given Rena. But, whether I like it or not, it was your son, Uesugi. Your son pried open my eyes to the individuality of those quintuplets. Even though they haven't graduated, all their efforts have already made me proud and I know Rena is smiling down at them. But now, it's time for me to pay my dues. For my daughters and myself.]

Time now goes back to the present once again. Isanari was looking around for something, or someone.

Isanari:"That Maruo, suddenly texting me. Didn't think he was the type to text. Geh, give me vague ass instructions, why don't you? It's not like-"

Isanari then bumped into someone in the designated spot Maruo told him.

Isanari:"...Wait, I know you!...Hey, wait a minute!"
