Conversations on a Balcony

111

Kara was pacing back and forth on the DEO balcony, teeth gritted as she reflexively adjusted her glasses. "Why didn't you tell me, Alex?" she demanded. "You know this has been stressing me out! Why did I have to overhear Brainy rather than hear it from MY OWN SISTER?!"

"Kara," Alex replied gently. "Brainy and I agreed that we should keep it to ourselves until we'd exhausted all the other options."

"WHAT OTHER OPTIONS?!" Kara exclaimed. "We've been going around on this for over a year! There have been no other solutions and now you're telling me you've had this in your back pocket the whole time?!"

"Have you told Cat?" the director asked, folding her arms and leaning back against the waist-high wall.

"No…" The hero's voice lowered as she joined her sister. "I want to figure out the pros and cons before I do."

"Kara… are you sure this is even what she'd truly want?" Alex asked. "If we told her, would she feel obligated just because you wanted it for her? You know she'd do just about anything for you. Rewriting her DNA to make her Kryptonian… it's a lot. Plus, you know the risks of time travel. Barry has proven them over and over."

The Kryptonian sighed. "I would never let Cat do it if I had the slightest suspicion that it wasn't what she wanted… and I'm aware of the risks, believe me."

"I know, Honey," the director nodded. "But before you tell her… please… PLEASE… think it through." She stepped closer and wrapped her arms around her sister, kissing her head. "I'm just worried. I love Cat and I don't want to lose her while trying to extend her life."

Kara leaned against her sister and nodded. "I know she'd do anything for me, but she truly doesn't want to leave us anymore than we want to lose her." She closed her eyes. "I don't want to lose you or Kelly or Carter either."

"It's the downside to loving humans," Alex said quietly. "We're all so damn fragile… even if we feel like we're invincible a lot of the time."

They stood there quietly for a moment, just savoring their closeness. Then Kara tilted her head to look at her sister. "So, if we were to do this, how would we get there?"

"Brainy would have to build a beacon to communicate with the Legion in the future. Then a Legion ship would have to come and get you."

"Ugh… Mon-El," Kara grimaced.

"Hopefully, he's over his thing for you."

"Yeah," Kara agreed. "Last thing I want is Cat trying to punch him again."

"Oh, Honey, I'd pay to see that," Alex laughed.

Kara offered a grin of her own. "Honestly… me too."
