Let's see what happens next shall we, hope you're still enjoying the story. It's my pride and joy.
Jane looked sadly at her best friend Frost, how was she going to be able to help him with this situation. "You were working on a case and got hurt, you Tommy and Todd in a car garage collapsed," she decided to talk about how he ended up in the hospital see if that would spark any kind of memory.
"Why on earth would Todd and Tommy be with me on a case?"
Jane shrugged, "Beats me, I wasn't there at the time. I didn't think it was wise for you to be doing so, but I was on vacation with Maura. I heard that you three were going to go out to lunch."
Frost nodded, "You girls really do deserve a break, I'm glad you got one, especially with your dad dying Jane."
"Okay, you remember Frank's dead, that's something."
"And your mom is doing good with the baby right?"
"Julian, yeah, he was born on the fourth of July. Ma ended up almost dying but she made it out alright," Jane sighed, still trying to pinpoint the last thing Frost remembers doing.
Maura watched the two interact, she rested her hand on Jane's shoulder, "Jane, I really think the doctor should come in and see him."
Frost nodded, "Yeah go get the doctor," he sighed, he was still in a daze, upset he wasn't sure what he could last remember. "Only the doctor, I don't want either of Jane's brothers in here. Just you three will be more than enough."
"Sure thing Frost," Maura nodded, slipping out of the room. Tommy seen her come out and stood up.
"Anything Maura?"
"Frost is awake, but he says he only wants to see me, Jane and the doctor. He seems very confused and we're trying to figure out some things."
"Why doesn't he want to see me?" Tommy asked with a frown.
"I don't know Tommy, but I really need to go get the doctor. He'll be able to try and help Frost better. You just need to have patience."
"How much longer am I supposed to have this patience? I've been waiting three weeks for him to wake up."
"Tommy, just let Maura get the doctor man," Frankie grabbed his brother by the arm, leading him back to the chairs. Even though Tommy was being very stubborn.
There was silence in the hospital room, Jane's hand never leaving Frost's. "Frost, what's going on in that mind of yours?"
"I feel so lost Jane, it's really scary. I just remember darkness."
Jane's heart broke with the look of worry in Frost's eyes. "This sucks, I knew there was a chance you could lose some memories but I didn't realize it'd be everything. Just hang in there buddy alright?"
"Yeah, just please don't go anywhere okay Jane?"
"Of course not, it's you and me Frost," she smiled softly in reassurance. Soon the doctor had come in alongside Maura.
"Hello there, it's nice to see you awake, you have a lot of people who care about you. Let's start with the basics, who you are, what you do for a living and what relationships you have or remember having."
"I'm Barry Frost, I work at BPD as a homicide detective. Age 30 I'm not mistaken, uh Jane's my best friend and I tell her everything. I know it's not related to me but I know Jane and Maura are married, they are taking care of their friend's kids, twins Todd and Kate," he turned to look over at Jane. "That's their names right?" Jane nodded her head. "And I know Jane's mother is married to Jane's old partner Korsak."
"And as for you?" the doctor asked and Frost shrugged.
"I think I remember Jane and I having a conversation about her brothers. They kept on fighting over me and I was tired of it..." Frost nodded. "You know that makes sense... why I don't want to see them. I told you Jane that I would not be involved with either of them," Frost nodded again, directing his response towards Jane, deciding that's what he remembers quite clearly. He realized the way Jane and Maura looked at each other and then back to him that something was wrong. "I... what? What did I mess up on?"
Jane frowned, "That was months ago Frost. Things changed since then..." she nodded down towards his hand, his eyes following hers. He spotted the ring on his finger.
"Wait, I'm married?"
"No, you are engaged though. To Tommy."
"Jane that's impossible, Tommy would never settle down and I..." Frost rubbed his temple, groaning in pain. "My head is starting to hurt."
"Maybe you need to rest Barry," the doctor looked at the man. "It's a lot to take in... I don't have any further questions for you at this time, I don't want to stress you out too much. I do suggest that you stay in the hospital for the next couple of days and we'll observe you and make sure you're okay with doing normal tasks. I'll give you some meds for your headache, I'll return in a moment." He spoke before leaving the room.
Frost looked down at his hand and ring on his finger, before moving to take it off.
"Frost, what are you doing?" Jane asked in a hushed tone.
"Jane I can't be engaged to your brother if I don't recall it happening. It's not fair to him or me, right?" Frost groaned.
"You should do what you think is best for you, I just... I don't think Tommy will understand it."
"Well if he doesn't understand then that just goes to show that I made the right decision to move on to whenever I decided it before."
Maura sighed, seeing Frost like this was pretty painful, he looked so confused and upset like he would eventually break down.
"Maybe you shouldn't avoid seeing Tommy, maybe it'll spark something inside of you," Jane suggested, the last thing Jane wanted was for her brother to spiral into darkness. She knew Tommy and knew he wouldn't take this news lightly. He'd overreact, and possibly do something stupid again, Jane had to find a way to tell Tommy, without him lashing out, she didn't want Tommy to make a scene in front of Frost when he was already struggling with his memories. "I think I should go have a talk with my brother."
"Wait Jane, take this to him, tell him that I really am sorry but make him understand I'm not doing this to hurt him. I would never intentionally hurt him."
"I'll do the best that I can," Jane got up, giving Frost a sad smile before walking out of the room. She didn't know how she'd be able to do this. Jane put the ring in her pocket.
"Everything is going to be alright eventually Maura, right?" Frost asked, eyes begging her for some sort of hope.
Maura patted his hand, "Everything will work out in the end, it always does." Maura was unsure of how things would pan out, but she didn't want to upset him more than he seemed to be.
Tommy got up from the chair in the waiting room quickly as he seen Jane exited Frost's room. "Hey Jane, how's Barry, did he want to see me now?"
"How about we go for a walk?" Jane spoke in a tone and both her brothers knew what that meant. "The doctor said he needed his rest, he shouldn't be straining his brain right now."
Tommy sighed, "Fine, but I still don't understand," he walked beside his sister as they went outside of the hospital to take a walk. "What doesn't he remember?" was the first thing he thought to ask Jane.
"Well he didn't know that Ma gave birth to Julian, and he knew that Pop was dead. He thought that was why me and Maura went on vacation... to cope with that. He knows that me and her are taking care of the twins."
Tommy stopped walking, "Jane I'm talking about what doesn't he remember about me... that's the whole point of this talk, isn't it? Why can't you just tell me?"
"It's not that simple, okay? It's already bad enough that it's hard for me to tell you. Seeing him struggle to remember things, it's hard on him Tommy, you have to understand that."
"I get that Jane, I get that it's difficult, but I don't get why he doesn't want to see me. Please just tell me so I'm not in the dark."
Jane sighed, taking Frost's engagement ring out of her pocket. "He remembers making a decision to letting both you and Frankie go. To move on from you both, that's what he last remembers."
Tommy just looked at his sister blankly, looking at the ring in her hand. "So he doesn't remember..." he sighed before taking the ring from her, glancing down at it before putting it in his pocket.
Jane shook her head, "Tommy I'm sorry, Frost is too, he said he doesn't want to hurt you but he can't be engaged to you if he doesn't remember. He says it's not fair to either of you."
"But me and Frankie aren't fighting over him anymore, Frankie is moving on finally. Frost breaking up with me isn't fair."
"Tommy, listen to me, it's not like his memory will be gone forever he just needs time, although I'm not certain if you'll be getting married at the time like you planned. If he loves you like I know he does, he just needs time. I know it sounds cheesy as shit but maybe you can have a stronger relationship than you had.. Sort of like starting over with a clean slate."
"I don't want a clean slate, I just want Barry back to normal. I'm so fucking glad I'm suing that fuck ass company that caused this to happen. It's their fault."
Jane rested her hand on Tommy's shoulder, "I know Tommy, I know you're angry and I understand that completely. You have every single reason to be, but please just don't let this take you back to that dark place. It scares the hell out of me that you tried to... end things. You know I'd miss you and Frost, it would destroy him, it would destroy all of us."
"I just want to talk to him Jane, please can you try to get him to talk to me? I don't like knowing he doesn't want to see me, maybe it'll spark something in him if he sees me. Maybe that's what he's so afraid of."
Jane sighed, "I don't think he wants to see anyone else, but I hate seeing you like this... I can't make any promises, I just... promise me you won't do something stupid and you'll stay with someone at all times so you aren't left alone, even if I have to have a police officer following you."
Tommy nodded, "I promise Jane, alright, just don't put an ankle monitor on me, that'd be pushing it."
"Oh I could definitely find a way to make it happen if need be," she patted his back as they went back inside. "Just, this might take a moment."
"Yeah Jane, of course." Tommy went to go sit down next to Frankie.
Jane sighed, slipping back into Frost's room.
"How'd he take it?"
"He took it better than I thought he would have, but sometimes he's real good at hiding his emotions. There is something though, he wants to see you, I know you say you don't want to see him, but it might be good..."
Frost sighed, "That's what the doctor was telling me, not to just slowly ease into things, but maybe doing things I normally do will help. Like keep my routine, the last routine I remember having is staying with you and Maura, I remember making breakfast for you and the twins a lot. Maura was telling me that I live with Tommy now, but since I don't remember... I hope that's okay."
Jane smiled, "That's more than fine, I loved having you around and so did the twins. You know when you seen Tommy bond with the twins that's what kind of got you back together with him realizing how responsible he could be and it definitely helped both of you realize you were better together."
"Maura told me Frankie and Tommy weren't fighting over me anymore, but I still think..."
"I understand, so did you want to let Tommy see you, I know he'd feel at least a bit better seeing you," Jane suggested and Frost looked at the two of them before nodding.
"Okay, bring him in."
Jane opened the door and waved Tommy to come in. "Remember, don't do something stupid. Maura, come on let's go get something to eat I'm starving," she nodded for her wife to come with.
"Will you be alright Frost?"
Frost focused his attention on Maura and Jane, "Yeah I'll be fine, maybe bring me back something to eat."
"Of course buddy," Jane nodded, leaving with Maura as they went down to the cafeteria.
"So..." Tommy started, sitting down next to his bed. "How's your head feeling?"
Frost shrugged, "A bit better, but that's just because the doctor gave me meds. They told me you were in the parking garage too when it collapsed, and Todd..."
Tommy nodded, "Yeah, it was scary Todd was able to speak to me, but you weren't. Todd hurt his leg and I had a small concussion, but that's not as bad as you, going into a coma and having some broken ribs. At least you were able to heal while you were in the comatose state, almost fully healed now, well except for your head."
"You know what's scary about this whole thing, it's the having gaps of nothing. I know I should remember more things, but I just don't. We must have been real happy if we were engaged."
"The happiest Barry, just like how Maura and Jane have been. I'm worried that you won't be able to fully remember things."
Frost nodded, "I know you're probably upset about this whole thing. I know I care about you, a lot but things are different. We can't go back to how things were exactly. What if I don't remember all that you know about us... Are you going to bail on me?"
Tommy shook his head. "I'm never going to abandon you, okay? I'm not going anywhere. I understand that it's going to take time. That's why I want to marry you Barry, I don't want to be without you. The thought of being... the thought of losing you scares the hell out of me. I have been terrified about this whole thing... I even did something so stupid. I don't even want to do something like that again. I can't let you do this alone."
"I won't be alone though Tommy, I have Jane and Maura, and her family... and I guess I have you."
"You'll always have me Barry, I promise," Tommy spoke in tears, moving to squeeze Frost's hand.
"I'm sorry I can't remember us getting back together."
"Hey, don't apologize, alright? You did nothing wrong, I'm here for you though. I swear on it. Whatever you need."
Frost nodded, "Okay."
Jane and Maura left the hospital after a few hours, Frost wanted to get some rest and he knew Jane and Maura had other things to do. Tommy stayed in Frost's hospital room, they decided to stop talking and watch something on television until Frost had fallen asleep. Tommy gave Frost a sad look, hoping that things will be okay between them even if they were a little bit different than before. Frankie had ended up joining them in the room, to keep an eye on Tommy, per Jane's orders, but he was asleep on the recliner.
Jane and Maura approached Korsak's house. Jane knocked on the door. "You know I hope we did the right thing, leaving Frost at the hospital with my brothers."
Maura squeezed Jane's hand, "It's going to be fine Jane, they matured from all the competing for Barry's attention. Plus Frost will mainly be resting."
"I know, but I'm worried."
"I know you are Jane... and I don't blame you for being worried."
"Yeah, it's just something I can't not do," Jane frowned and knocked on the door again. "Hey Ma open the door."
Maura sighed, they've only been back half a day and Maura wanted to go back on vacation. She'd have to de-stress her wife later in the best way she knew how.
"There's no need to shout Janie," Angela spoke as she opened the door.
"Well you won't let me ring the doorbell with Julian sleeping and I have to knock gently, how on earth can you possibly hear me if I don't shout?" Jane asked, eyeing her mother. "You going to give me a hug or what?"
"You're asking me for a hug, well that's new," Angela smiled proudly before granting Jane's wish, hugging her but not too much because she just remembered that Jane is pregnant. "I almost didn't ask Janie, how's the pregnancy, I bet the morning sickness is a drag."
"Mine usually happens at night, after I eat dinner unfortunately. At least I have Maura to hold my hair back." Jane smiled at her wife, and Angela grinned.
"Maura, of course, always such a darling," she grinned her daughter's wife, giving her a hug. "So you have to tell me all about your trip," she grabbed Maura by the arm, walking with her inside. Jane following, shaking her head.
"Ma where's Korsak and the twins? Figured I'd ask before I lose you to talk about the trip."
"Oh they'll be back, went to go pick up some dinner, Julian makes it hard to want to cook sometimes."
"I see, well you two talk about the trip, I'm going to call Susie and see how Chad's doing. I kind of missed the tortoise." Jane let her wife get sucked into a conversation with her mother as she went to the kitchen, grabbing something to drink as she called Susie. The woman picked up on the first ring.
"Jane, what a pleasant surprise, did you and Maura make it back home?"
"Yeah, it's great to be back in Boston. Well somewhat. Frost woke up, so that's good, but he doesn't remember much of his relationship with Tommy, so that's going to be a struggle. And as for Frankie, he seems quiet about the whole thing."
"I, yeah Frankie is pretty quiet at work too. Kent talks enough for the both of us. It's funny, he complains about Lydia talking too much, yet he can go on forever," Susie laughed.
"Oh so I guess Kent doesn't just like smart people."
"Yeah Kent is a very interesting yet intriguing person once you get to know him."
"I'd imagine you and him hitting it off, if you're into the Scottish man."
"I um well, actually Kent's not my type."
"You're both into science and smart shit," Jane chuckled. "Anything to keep his mind off of Maura," she spoke becoming serious.
"Kent isn't into Maura..."
"Oh Susie, everyone is into Maura. I bet even you had thoughts about what it would be like to, you know."
"Aren't you calling to check up on your tortoise?"
"Are you admitting to me Susie that..."
"Chad is doing fine and no I haven't thought of Maura like that ever."
"Okay if you say so," Jane smirked, she loved messing with Susie. "Mind watching Chad for tonight, you can drop him off at our house tomorrow, join Maura and I for breakfast."
"Yeah, that sounds good. I really should get back to work now. I'm glad you're both back from your trip, sad that you aren't working with us anymore."
"Yeah it'll be odd that's for sure, starting new jobs for myself. You take care of yourself Susie, see you at breakfast. Don't forget the tortoise."
"I won't Jane, have a good evening."
"Good night Susie," Jane hung up the phone and drank her drink, Maura still chatting away with Angela about the trip. Jane sighed in relief as Korsak and the twins entered the house.
"Jane, Maura, you're back!" the twins shouted.
"Kids, Julian is sleeping," Angela lightly scolded.
"Ma, let the kids be excited," Jane went to go hug the two. "It's so nice to see the both of you. You seem to be well Todd, I mean minus that cast. And Kate, I swear you've grown five inches."
"I only grew two inches," Kate smirked, before Maura hugged both of the twins. "How was the trip? Did you take lots of pictures?"
"We took tons. Can't wait to show you guys later, we're going to make a whole evening out of it after Frost comes home from the hospital. You know, he woke up today, would have invited you both to see him but doctor said that he needs his rest," Jane told them both.
"He's awake? Does he remember Uncle Tommy?" Todd asked, a frown on his face.
"Well some things he doesn't remember but it'll take some time and patience. Everything works out in the end," Jane reassured the boy. "But the good news is when he gets out of the hospital he's going to be staying with us for a while. He remembers staying with us and making breakfast."
"What's Uncle Tommy going to do?"
"He's not going to be alone, he promised he'd always be with somebody. I heard what happened to him and I promise we're all going to do everything we can so he stays safe. I heard he has been staying with Frankie ever since he got out from the hospital."
"Kent's been helping too," Todd added.
"Well that's good on him. So did you and Kate want to come back home with us tonight?"
"I kinda like it here, there's no stairs."
"They can stay here another night Jane. I know you and Maura probably want to wind down," Korsak spoke up. "Me and Ang kind of got used to them being here."
Angela nodded, "They have been pretty helpful and I'm sure you two would want to unpack and get the house all in order and get things situated for when Frost stays with you."
Maura and Jane looked at each other and nodded, "That'd be a good idea, it has been a pretty long day. We'll still join you guys for dinner," Maura spoke, realizing nobody seemed to notice that Korsak had brought food home.
"Yeah, I should probably get to plating the food."
"I'll help," Jane offered, causing the older man to look amused. They headed into the kitchen as the twins wanted to show Maura all the things they made when her and Jane were gone. "I really appreciate all you've done for us, helping out with the twins. I know it's a lot to handle. It's definitely great having help, I'm going to need it still when I have my baby."
"I still find it hard to believe that you're pregnant, that you're going to have a child of your own, kind of scares the hell out of me the thought of having a little Jane Rizzoli running around."
"Well let's just hope little Jane or Jasper is more like Maura than they are like me. I would hate for my child to keep getting into trouble and mischief. Ending up with a broken nose because that shit hurts like hell. Shit, I'm going to turn into my mother if I have a child like me or either of my brothers."
"Well I wish you all the luck in the world if that happens," Korsak chuckled, patting her back.
"Thanks I'm going to need it, so will Maura. I hope Maura realize what she's going to get herself into, having a child with me."
"I'm sure she'll hold herself quite nicely, she does very well with the twins."
Jane smiled, looking over in the living room at Maura with the twins. "She's amazing Korsak. I love that woman so much, spending the last few weeks on this trip I wish it never had to end."
"I'm glad you two enjoyed yourself."
"Oh that we did Korsak," Jane grinned. "It was amazing, even the moments when I felt down she made it so much better. I'd be a mess without her in my life."
"Yeah, I'm glad you two found love in each other, you really were made to be together."
Jane smiled and Maura looked up making eye contact with her smiling back. "We really were Korsak. Let's eat now shall we?"
After dinner and saying goodbye to the kids Maura and Jane went home, they unloaded the car, placing their bags in the living room.
"Maura, I forgot to mention that tomorrow Susie is joining us for breakfast when she drops off Chad. I expect her to be here early, she surely seems like a morning person, so she'll probably be here around five."
Maura nodded, "Yeah which means we should probably get to sleep soon. We have a lot to do tomorrow," Maura sat down on the couch to stretch out her legs.
"Yeah that we do," Jane sat down next to her. "I can't get my mind off of Frost, Maura. I feel so damn helpless."
"It's going to be alright, he'll have a nice stay here and hopefully he'll start to remember things. Get into his old routine, the one he remembers anyways. I know he'll like staying here, you're his best friend and it's nice that you're worried."
"I'm always going to worry, about him, about Tommy, about how we're going to handle worrying about our child when it gets older..."
"Sometimes you worry too much Jane, but I don't mean that in a bad way, well not exactly... the people around you love knowing how much you care about them. You always care and I love you for that," Maura shifted slightly on the couch, placing a kiss on Jane's collarbone. "I love you for everything that you are."
Jane nodded, "Yeah?"
"Yeah," Maura smiled, continuing her kisses.
"Maura..."
"Yes Jane," Maura paused for a moment, looking at Jane.
"As much as I love when you do that, maybe we can just cuddle, for tonight. It's been a long day."
"Oh, of course, if that's what you want."
"You know that's not what I want, it's just what I need for now, for tonight."
"Sure anything you need."
"Thanks," Jane smiled, moving to lay down on the couch, pulling her wife into her arms. "See cuddling is nice," Jane loved how Maura felt this close, head on her chest, breathing gently, it felt nice and relaxing. Soon both girls drifted off to sleep.
Jane actually had a full night of sleep and she woke up feeling refreshed. She slipped off of the sofa and went to go bring her and Maura's bags upstairs. It was six AM in the morning, Jane only got to unpack a bit before she heard a knock on the front door and shortly after the voices of Maura and Susie.
"Thanks for taking care of Chad while we were gone, Korsak wasn't exactly the best caretaker," Maura mentioned.
"Yeah, Chad was amazing, it kind of makes me want a tortoise for myself."
"Well they make great pets."
"And definitely gets the attention of certain gentlemen who were hesitant to help at first."
Maura laughed, "I bet he was so focused on helping out with Chad."
"Sometimes, but we both know what he was really focused on."
"It does seem to be the type of things they focus on. I know Jane likes to focus on certain things... last night though we cuddled and we didn't partake in any usual night activities. It was different but very nice, I hope that it happens more often."
"I'm sure we can make that happen," Jane came downstairs, deciding to stop listening in on their conversation and make herself known.
"Hello Jane," Susie greeted. "Maura and I were just discussing some things. Chad is happy to be home," she let him out of his carrier, letting him slowly come out on his own. "It's nice to see you Jane, I brought some bagels over there's this nice place near my apartment."
"Well thanks, that's very nice of you and thanks again for taking care of Chad since Korsak was an unfit caretaker. At least he was able to properly care for the twins."
"I'll go get the table situated, Susie why don't you tell Jane about that thing we talked about..."
"I uh, you sure you don't need any help Maura?"
"I'll call you when it's set up," Maura grabbed the bag of bagels from her friend, heading into the dining room.
"So Susie Chang, what did you want to discuss? Willing to admit you had a thing for Maura?"
"Can't admit something that isn't true. Although I find it interesting of how amused you seem to be on the subject."
"I like you Susie, I don't like Kent... it's better thinking you have a thing for Maura than him having a thing for Maura, you know? Because I know you respect our relationship."
"Kent's not all that bad Jane."
"Well if a smart girl like you doesn't like Kent romantically there must be something wrong with him."
"Like I said over the phone, he talks too much, can you imagine trying to get in the mood and he just talks... not very attractive if you ask me. Plus I have my eye on someone else. Someone you actually like..." Susie looked up at Jane.
"Oh and may I ask who this someone is... I mean Maura seems to know already."
"Yeah, but I hope that it doesn't upset you, that you're okay if things keep on progressing... I really want things to work out between him and I. He's such a great person and is deserving of someone who well, who is me."
"Well damn Chang, who is this person?" Jane was curious of who was making this girl so flustered.
"It's your brother, Frankie. We sort of had a connection and he really makes me happy the small amount of time we spent together. I didn't want to go do too much with him if you weren't comfortable with it happening... I know how much your brother means to you and I never want to hurt him. I've seen how he got upset whenever it didn't work out with somebody, how he never seemed to know if he was good enough for somebody. I'm thinking that maybe he just didn't find the right person... maybe who he needed was someone he didn't necessarily notice," Susie spoke and the more she said the wider Jane's grin got. "But then when he was helping me with Chad and it just, it felt really nice. I find myself thinking about him all the time and I really hope that you're okay with this."
"Susie, you're not very good with facial cues," Jane laughed, resting a hand on Susie's shoulder. "You really like my brother, yes?"
"Yeah, he's pretty amazing actually."
"Don't let him get away from you then, don't let him ever doubt that he's not good enough for anyone."
"So, you are supportive of this, of me and your brother?"
"Like I said, I like you Susie and if Frankie can finally be happy, I'm so fucking grateful that it's with you," Jane gave Susie a hug. "And I don't have to threaten you because I know he's in very good hands, don't make me threaten you, okay."
"I seen the wrath of Jane Rizzoli and trust me, I never want to see that side directed towards me. I'm so relieved Jane, you have no idea."
Jane pulled away from the woman, "Come on let's go eat those delicious bagels now, I'm starved."
Rizzles had a very interesting time back in Boston already, didn't they? I know Rizzles didn't have much of alone time but when they did it was cute and aww they actually cuddled. So Jane is approving of Susie and Frankie, hope you guys are too. As for Frost, man that boy is struggling and lost some of his Tommy memories but let's hope Tommy doesn't go off the deep end again, he seems to be handling things okay right now. And Jane and Tommy had a nice conversation as did Korsak and Jane. Can't wait to have a little Jane or Jasper running about one day. That's all the rant I have in me, would love to hear your thoughts guys. It keeps my muse alive.
