A/N: This is the third part to the last two chapters. There will probably be another chapter to this. For these chapters, the time frame is now but I'm not following any of storylines from the episodes or the Covid stuff. I don't own any of the characters except my own.
Meeting Megan
Hank's flight arrived in New York and he got off the plane. He headed to baggage claim to get his luggage. Olivia had sent him a text that someone would be there to pick him up. As soon as he got his bag, he went towards the door and saw Erin.
"Hey."
"Hey, kid."
Hank hugged Erin and then they went out to Erin's car. They put his stuff in and then she drove to Olivia's.
"I'm glad she finally told you. I've been trying to get her to tell you since she told me. If I could have told you myself, I would have."
"I know that. I'm glad you've been there for her though."
"When you sent me to New York to work with the FBI, I was actually glad because then I could be closer to Liv. Are you ready for this?"
"I'm really nervous about it. What if she doesn't like me?"
"She's a little sweetheart. She will. Liv told me that you already proposed."
"News travels fast. I have always been in love with that woman. Does Olive know about this?"
"No. I promised Liv I wouldn't tell anyone and I didn't.
"I was seeing someone briefly."
"How did I not know about this?"
"Because it was short-lived. She wanted more out of it but I couldn't get Olivia out of my head. I thought she understood that I needed to do that before our relationship went any further but apparently not."
"Who was it?"
"Deputy Superintendent Samantha Miller."
"Oh, Hank! What the hell am I going to do with you?"
Hank shrugged his shoulders and Erin continued driving to Olivia's. She had moved since he was last there as she was now living in a brownstone. They got out of the car and Hank's stomach was in knots. He was about to meet his daughter for the first time. They went up the stairs and rang the doorbell. Noah answered it.
"Hi Erin."
"Hey, kiddo."
"You're Hank, right?"
"Yeah. It's been a while."
"I do remember you. Come on in."
"Thanks."
Hank and Erin walked in just as Olivia was coming downstairs with Megan.
"Hi."
"Hi yourself. You're a pretty little girl."
"Thank you. My name is Megan Olivia Benson. What's your name?"
"Hank Voight."
"Oh. It's nice to meet you."
"Sweetie, Hank is your daddy."
"Really?"
"Yep."
Erin and Olivia could both tell that Hank was more than a little uncomfortable but he had tears running down his face.
"Why are you crying?"
"I'm kind of overwhelmed right now."
"Oh."
"I figured we could go out for dinner."
Noah got his jacket and Megan's jacket, while Olivia got hers. They all got into Olivia's SUV and she drove to the restaurant. When they got to the restaurant, they were all seated in a round booth. Hank was still quiet. He just didn't know what to say. Olivia was sitting on one side Hank, so she put her hand on his knee and took his hand. Megan was on his other side. They all looked to see what they wanted and then their server came to take their order before getting their drinks. Megan was busy drawing a picture.
"What are you drawing, Peanut?"
"It's a surprise."
"For who?"
"I'm not telling you."
"Ok then."
They were all watching Megan draw her picture and Noah was trying not to laugh. When Megan noticed he was laughing at her, she elbowed him. Hank started smirking.
"Ow! Stop it, Megan!"
"You're a baby."
"I am not. I'm older than you are."
"Megan Olivia, don't talk to your brother like that."
"Sorry, Mommy."
"Don't tell me. Tell him."
"Sorry, Noah."
"It's ok."
"Hank's smirking over there."
"I see that. She's a combination of us both. She doesn't take any crap from anyone but she has such a big heart. She also gets kind of sassy at bedtime sometimes. She stands in front of me, crosses her arms in front of her and gives me a look. I know where that attitude comes from. Although I'm not exactly sure where she gets her creativity from because it is definitely not me."
"Me neither."
"She's very creative for being almost 4½."
Olivia finally realized what Megan was drawing, Olivia covered her mouth with her hand and the tears started falling down her face.
"Noah, how do you spell 'Daddy'?"
"D-a-d-d-y."
Megan wrote it on the paper and then she put her name at the bottom before handing it to Hank.
"This is for you. It's you."
"Thank you."
"You're welcome."
Megan crawled up onto Hank's lap and wrapped her arms around him. He wrapped his arms around her too as he rubbed her back. This moment felt so right to him. This was the first time he had held his daughter.
"She loves having her back rubbed. Where are you staying?"
"I didn't even think of that."
"We have another room, so you can stay there if you want."
Olivia winked at Hank because he knew she meant he could stay in her bedroom.
"If not, he can stay with me."
"Maybe I'll take Olivia up on her offer and then if she gets a call while I'm here, I can stay with them. I decided to take a whole week off."
"I'll probably do a few days while you're here but you could probably use some time with her without me. She's in Preschool a couple days a week, so Tuesday and Thursday."
"When is her birthday?"
"November 9th."
"That's the day we met."
"It is. I wasn't sure if you would actually remember that."
"I think I do want to do that test though. It's not that I don't believe you but I want to know for sure."
"I understand and like I told you, I'm fine with it. I'll call Melinda and see if she can do it."
Olivia called Melinda and then she hung up.
"We can go in the morning."
"Ok."
Their food arrived and then Megan sat next to Hank again. After everyone ate, they headed back to Olivia's. Hank got his stuff out of Erin's car and then she left. Everyone else went inside. Noah went to get ready for bed and then Olivia took Megan to get ready for bed. Megan wanted Hank to tuck her in and then Olivia kissed her goodnight. Hank stood in the doorway and watched. Olivia walked out of Megan's room.
"So, we made her, huh?"
"Yeah, we did. I understand that you may have your doubts but I would never lie about something that."
"I know you wouldn't."
"Do you to stay in the guest room or with me?"
"It's up to you."
"They're going to have to get used to us together sometime."
Olivia went to check on Noah and then took Hank into her bedroom and shut the door before they got ready for bed. They then started kissing and made love. Afterwards Hank had his arms around her and she had her head on his chest.
"I really want this to work between us."
"I do too. I'm sorry for everything."
"I am too. I shouldn't have waited until after we had slept together that night to tell you about Ed being in my life. That was just shitty on my part. I spent the last 5 years wanting to be with the father of my child. I don't want to screw this up again."
"No matter how hard I tried, I could not get you out of my head. I love you, Olivia Benson."
"I love you too, Hank Voight."
They kissed and then they fell asleep in each other's arms. The next morning, the kids woke up and went into Olivia's room just as they always did. They saw Hank and Olivia sleeping, so they decided to go put the TV on. Hank and Olivia woke up a little later and after Olivia went into the bathroom, Hank went to take a shower. Olivia helped Megan get dressed, while Noah went to get dressed. Once Hank was done in the bathroom, Olivia went to get ready. They headed to see Melinda to do the test and she said she would have the results for them in couple days or if she could get it done sooner, she would. They went to have breakfast and then they went to the Zoo. Hank was carrying Megan around on his shoulders. Olivia love seeing the two of them interacting. She was anxious to get the results of the test back. Before they headed back to Olivia's, they stopped at the store, so Hank could make spaghetti and meatballs for dinner. Both kids wanted to help. Olivia was relaxing on the sofa.
"Hank."
"Yeah, kiddo."
"I had fun today. I hope you're going to be a part of our lives from now on. Mom seems so happy too. She's been so sad lately."
"I wanna be in your life as well as your sister's. I also love your mom very much. I want us all to be a family."
"Does that include me?"
"Of course it does. I want to be a dad to both of you."
"I'm glad. I never had a dad and I really want one."
Olivia was listening into their conversation and it made her so happy. This could end up being the happily ever after she had always dreamed of having. A part of her didn't want to get her hopes up yet but she knew she loved Hank and he loved her and he was the man she knew she wanted. Once dinner was ready, they ate and cleaned up the kitchen. They all got ready for bed and watched a movie. By the time the movie was over, both kids were sound asleep. Megan was asleep on Hank's chest with her thumb in her mouth and Noah was sleeping across Olivia's lap. They tried to get as comfortable as they could and they fell asleep as well.
The next day was pretty quiet but they spent another day together as a family. Olivia had got a call, so she had to leave for a few hours. Hank had everything under control with the kids. They had both been bathed and were in bed by the time she had gotten home. By the time the weekend was over with, Olivia had decided to go into work and let Hank spend the day with Megan, while she was gone and Noah was at school. Olivia went in and added Hank to the list of approved people to pick Noah up. Hank drove her to work, so they dropped Noah off before he took her to the Precinct. She told Hank that she would add him to the list at Megan's Preschool as well. Hank had decided to take Megan and go look at engagement rings. In his heart, he knew Megan was his and he wanted to make it official with all of them. Melinda had come into the Precinct.
"Hey, Doc."
"Hey."
"What's goin' on?"
"I'm here to see Olivia."
"Ok then."
Melinda went towards Olivia's office and knocked on the door.
"Come on in."
"Thanks."
Melinda went into Olivia's office and shut the door.
"I have the results of the paternity test Hank took the other day."
"That was fast."
"They match but there was another female familial match to both of them in the system."
Melinda handed Olivia the results.
"Wow! I don't think he knows about this.
Olivia called Hank and asked him to come to the Precinct. He told her he would be there as soon as he could. Melinda sat down and they talked until Hank and Megan got there.
"Hey, Voight."
"Hey."
Fin got up and kissed Megan on her cheek.
"How's my baby girl?"
"Fine, Uncle Fin."
"Voight, this is Officer Katriona Tamin. Kat, this is Sergeant Hank Voight from Chicago."
"Nice to meet you, Sergeant."
"You too."
"Hey, Megan."
"Hi."
Megan also went to give Amanda a hug. Olivia saw them, so she came out of her office.
"Cap, is there something wrong?"
"Nothing at all. Sweetie, stay out here, ok?"
"Ok."
Megan sat down at one of the empty desks and Amanda had pulled out a coloring book and crayons that she kept for when Jesse and Billie were there. Olivia took Hank into her office.
"Melinda said you and Megan match but there was a female familial match to both of you."
"What?"
Olivia handed Hank the file with the results and he looked at it.
"Oh, no!"
"You didn't know about this?"
"Hell no! Although, Bunny Fletcher wouldn't know how to tell the truth if her life depended on it. It was a one-night stand and I was young and stupid. When Bunny had told her that Jimmy Sanguinetti was her father, Halstead had run his DNA. It didn't match Erin's. Bunny came in and blamed me for running it and told me maybe Erin should run my DNA. She told me that I wanted to forget that night happened and my comment to that was 'you wish'. The fact never even crossed my mind. I need to talk to Erin."
"You can have these."
"Thanks."
"Thanks, Mel."
"Sure."
Melinda left and then Hank called Erin to see if she could meet for lunch. She agreed. They set a time and place and then he, Olivia and Megan left to meet her. Hank had Olivia's SUV and Olivia had driven her work SUV just in case she had to leave. They all arrived at about the same time. They went in, got a table and sat down. They had their order taken and then Hank set the folder down.
"Are you Megan's daddy?"
"I am. I need you to look at this."
Erin opened the folder and read it.
"Wait, this means…"
"Yep. A week ago, I didn't have any daughters other than the stillborn one or so I thought. Now as it turns out, I have two of them."
Hank told Erin exactly what he had told Olivia earlier.
"As usual, this is all on Bunny."
"Yeah, it is. This in no way changes how I feel about you."
"Same. I'm actually relieved. You shaped me into the person I've become more than Bunny ever could. Whenever she tries calling me, I ignore her calls. I told her after what happened with Johnny that I don't want to have anything to do with her anymore. Every time she calls, she leaves me a message and makes it sound so urgent. Thankfully, I haven't heard from her in maybe 6 months."
"I'm surprised that she hasn't tracked me down looking for you. Not that I'd answer her calls. Trudy knows to keep her away from me if she comes into the District. She wouldn't know how to tell the truth if her life depended on it."
"She has always been that way."
"Daddy."
"What?"
"I love you."
"I love you too."
Olivia eyes were filling with tears.
"So, what are you two up to today?"
"It's a secret. I can't tell you."
"Ok."
Erin tried not to laugh. The food arrived and then Olivia had gotten a call. Once she hung up, she called Fin and told him she would meet them there. She asked for a box to take it with her and then she left after she kissed Hank and Megan.
"So, what are you two up to?"
"We went to a Jeweler."
"What did you buy?"
"This."
Hank pulled the ring box out of his pocket and showed Erin.
"Oh, wow! Hank, that is beautiful."
"Megan picked it out."
"Great job, Megan."
"Thank you."
"Does Noah know what you're planning to do?"
"Oh yeah. He's all for it. This is pretty much what I wanted since I met her."
"What do you have planned?"
"I made a reservation at a nice restaurant for Friday night. I wanna do this right. I just need to go shopping to get a suit. Would you be able to babysit?"
"I should be able to. If not, you can ask Lucy, I'm sure."
"Erin, can we have a slumber party?"
"That shouldn't be a problem."
"Yay!"
They finished lunch, Hank paid for it and they hugged each other before they left. Hank took Megan to look for a new suit for himself and Erin went back to work. Once Hank found what he needed, they went back to Olivia's. Megan fell asleep for a little while when they got back and then Lucy came in with Noah.
"You must be Hank."
"Yep. That's me. You're Lucy?"
"Yes. It's nice to meet you."
"You too."
"Did you get it, Hank?"
"I did."
Hank pulled the ring box out of his pocket and showed both Noah and Lucy.
"That is beautiful."
"Thanks. I hope she says yes."
"I don't see why she wouldn't. She has wanted to be with you all along. Even when she was with Ed that was obvious. I get she never said anything and honestly, I don't blame you for being mad at her about what had happened. I even asked her many times after she found out she was pregnant why she didn't just go to Chicago to tell you."
"Both of us made mistakes but the thing is, I couldn't get her out of my head. Megan is an amazing little girl."
"She really is."
"I'm planning to retire and move here but I don't want to upset their routine at all. I just wanted you to know that."
"I appreciate that. Thank you. Did Olivia tell you that they both have their dance classes today?"
"She did not."
"Would you like to come with us?"
"Yeah, sure. Oh, I asked Erin if she could watch the kids when Olivia and I go out for dinner. She said it shouldn't be a problem but if she can't, I should ask you."
"It shouldn't be a problem. Olivia did tell me you would be here this week, so I will only be around in the afternoons but I usually pick him up at school. Their dance classes are on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons at 4 for an hour to an hour and a half. I usually take them and Olivia picks them up unless she's stuck at work. I can come tomorrow morning and show you where her Preschool is. She's there for 3 hours, so from 9-12."
"I'd appreciate that. Thanks."
"No problem."
"Olivia did have me added to the list of approved people to pick him up and she was going to call the Preschool about that as well."
"Ok."
Megan came out of her room and Noah went into his room to change.
"Daddy, are you coming with me to my dance class?"
"Yeah. Lucy asked if I wanted to come with you."
"Yay!"
"Come on, Megan. You need to get ready."
"Ok."
Lucy took Megan to get ready for dance class and once they were ready, they left. Hank watched Megan's class, while Lucy watched Noah's until Olivia got there. Fin had dropped her off. After their classes were over, they met outside the rooms.
"What did you think?"
"She's good."
The left and headed out to the SUV. They got in and then they grabbed something for dinner on the way home. Once they got home and ate, Noah went to do his homework, while Megan went to watch a movie in her room. Hank and Olivia sat down on the sofa.
"Lucy said she'd come tomorrow morning to show me where the Preschool is."
"She told me."
"You and I have plans Friday night, so I asked Erin if she'd watch the kids. Megan wants to have a sleepover at Erin's."
"So, what are we doing?"
"It's a surprise."
"Damn it! I hate when I don't know what's going on."
Noah came out of his room.
"Hank."
"Yeah."
"Can I talk to you for a minute?"
"Yeah, sure."
Hank got up and went over to Noah. They went into his room and Noah shut the door. Olivia figured it must have been serious if Noah shut the door.
"What's goin' on, kiddo?"
"If you and my mom get married, does that mean you'll be my dad? I know you're Megan's dad."
"Would you like me to be your dad?"
"Yeah."
"I do want all of us to be a family. I would like to make it official with you too if it's ok with you and your mom."
"I'm ok with it. I just want to have a dad."
"I get it and I want to be your dad."
Noah gave Hank a hug and then Hank went back into the other room.
"Everything ok?"
"Yeah."
"I'm not sure I like that you're sharing secrets with my kids."
"One of them is mine too, remember?"
"Yes, I know."
"You'll find out about what Noah and I were talking about on Friday."
Olivia rolled her eyes at him.
"Don't roll your eyes at me, Benson."
"I outrank you, Sergeant."
"That has nothing to do with it, Captain. Congratulations on that, by the way."
"Thanks. It's more headaches as usual though. I'm glad I went to Chicago."
"I'm glad you did too."
"I just didn't know how to tell you."
"I get it. If I hadn't been such an ass, maybe things would have turned out differently."
"So, are you saying that we won't ever be together?"
"Not at all. I'm just saying that if I had handled that better, I might have known my daughter sooner."
"I get it."
"I'm the one that asked you to marry me the other day. I knew in my heart, even in the last 5 years, that I wanted to be with you."
"Same with me."
They gazed into each other's eyes and before they knew it, the two of them started making out on the sofa. The kids had come out of their respective rooms, saw them and started giggling.
"Daddy, did you give Mommy her ring yet?"
Noah smacked his forehead with his hand and shook his head, Olivia had a shocked look on her face, while Hank gave Megan a look. When she realized what she had done, she covered her mouth. She got upset and ran to her room in tears. Hank got off of Olivia, got up and went after her. She was sitting on her bed with her head down and tears pouring down.
"Come here."
"I'm sorry!"
"I know you are. I'm not mad. Look at me."
Megan look at Hank with her big brown eyes.
"It's ok. I know you didn't mean it."
Megan wrapped her arms around Hank and he did the same to her. Then Olivia and Noah came into her room.
"Do you want me to pretend I didn't hear that?"
"No. Take her."
"Come here, Peanut."
Megan went over to Olivia, while Hank went to get the ring. He came back into Megan's room.
"I wanted to do this right and have it be special, which is what Friday was all about."
Hank got down on one knee in front of Olivia and both kids.
"I knew from early on that I wanted to be with you even if you didn't. I know I said some not so nice things to you over 5 years ago and I do regret that. I've never been good at communicating my feelings but I do know that I love you and I love these two. I want to spend the rest of my life with the three of you. Olivia Benson, will you marry me?"
Olivia had tears pouring down, much like their daughter had just a short time ago.
"Yes, Hank, I will marry you!"
"You will?"
"Oh yeah!"
Olivia held out her left hand and Hank put the ring on her finger. Olivia grabbed Hank's face and they kissed.
"I want us all to be official and that also includes Noah. That is what we were talking about."
"Noah, you want Hank to be your dad?"
"Yes. I kind of always felt like I was missing something by not having a dad."
"A lot of that is my fault because I chose not to tell Hank about Megan."
"Until now."
"Yes, until now. I was afraid to get involved with anyone else because I didn't want you and Megan to get too attached and then have the relationship not last. After what happened with Ed, everything got turned upside down."
"It was kind of hard for me too but he hadn't been around in a while."
"I know. He told me he regretted that. I did care for him but he wasn't Hank. He knew I would always have a connection to Hank because of Megan. A part of me never gave up hope that someday Hank and I could be together or at least figure things out to allow Megan to have both of her parents in her life. It was wrong of me to not tell Hank about her and I will probably regret that for the rest of my life, since he missed out on so much."
"If I hadn't said what I said to you after that night, maybe you would have. I will get to be here for a lot though."
"Yes, you will."
"If you think things are moving too fast, we can be engaged for as long as you want to be. Honestly, I didn't expect you to answer as quickly as you did."
"This is something I have wanted for a long time. Maybe once you retire and move here or whatever you're planning to do, we can focus on what our tentative plans for the wedding are."
"That works for me. Did you want me to change our reservation and invite your squad to dinner to tell them we're engaged?"
"I think we'll leave things the way they are for now and I will tell them when I am ready to tell them. Maybe we could tell Erin though. Invite her to dinner tomorrow or something."
"That's reasonable."
Noah went to get ready for bed and Olivia helped Megan get ready for bed. Noah went into Megan's room for their story and then once the story was over and Megan was tucked in, they tucked Noah in together. Hank and Olivia went into her bedroom to make love before they got ready for bed.
During the next few days, Hank had gone with Lucy to take Megan to Preschool. Olivia had called to put Hank on the list to be able to pick either of them up from their respective schools. She decided to wear her engagement ring on a chain around her neck while she was at work, so she didn't lose it and no one saw it yet. Hank invited Erin for dinner and they ended up telling her they were engaged. He had also called Olive and Daniel to tell them what was going on. Everyone was so happy for them. Olive was glad to hear that Erin was his daughter. Erin ended up being able to stay with the kids Friday as planned, while Hank took Olivia out to dinner, which was now to celebrate their engagement. Hank ended up staying through the weekend and the four of them could spend time together. Olivia liked that they were slowly becoming a family. They had agreed to try to alternate every couple of weekends to see each other. Olivia, Erin and the kids had taken Hank to the airport. It was hard for Hank to leave them but he knew that the time had come for him to call it quits with his job to spend time with his family.
