"She keeps calling me Agent Salt," Adriana told Bruce.
"It's a complement," Bruce laughed. "I'm sure Harri loves your new hair."
"I guess," Adriana shrugged and put away the bottles of milk she had just pumped.
"How was therapy today?" Bruce asked.
"It was fine," Adriana said quickly. She was beginning to hate discussing her therapy with Bruce. He always looked so sad for her, even though he did his best not to.
Every time they discussed it, she just wanted to try again and again to make him see the truth. She was beginning to realize that therapy wasn't only making her feel worse because she was confessing so many truths to Dr. Kapoor. She was feeling worse because she was feeling like more of a liar, even though she had tried to tell Bruce the truth.
She thought of what Lucius told her. She had already given her best attempts at explaining things to Bruce, and continuing to do so would likely only antagonize him and make him even more worried about her. Keeping the secret wasn't lying since she had already told him the truth, but it would never feel like she wasn't lying because she knew he refused to accept her words.
Lucius thought leaving it was, at least for the time being, the best option. At least until the Joker was gone. But Adriana felt a pressing need to keep trying. She didn't know why.
"Will you have another session tomorrow?" Bruce asked.
"I don't know yet," Adriana said. "I haven't scheduled anything but Dr. Kapoor said he will be here for 4 hours in the morning."
Bruce nodded.
At that moment, the penthouse went dark. Adriana felt Bruce walk by her, amazed at how quickly he was able to see in the pitch black.
"Bruce?" Adriana asked and followed the sound of his footsteps.
"Power's still on everywhere else," Bruce said and pulled out his phone. "Except here..the medical facility.."
"Oh," Adriana said quietly.
"I'll reset the breakers," Bruce said. "Probably just a power surge."
"The breakers?" Adriana asked.
"The one here and the one downstairs," Bruce explained at kept walking.
"I can do that," Adriana said. "I'll reset the one downstairs."
Her eyes were adjusting to the dark and she saw Bruce turn to her after opening a drawer and pulling out a flashlight.
"How about you take the one here and I'll go downstairs," Bruce offered and turned on the light.
"No," Adriana said before he could say anything else and took his flashlight. "I mean..I've got it. I'll be right back."
Adriana walked away quickly, knowing for a fact that she did not want Bruce to have any reason to go downstairs.
"If you insist," Adriana heard Bruce say behind her as he rummaged for another flashlight.
There was a small, short stairwell that led down to the medical facility and Adriana decided to take it since she was unsure if the elevator was working. Adriana had only ever been in this stairwell one time, it was barely ever used. She ended up in the medical facility a minute later and walked through a side hallway with her flashlight on.
The entire facility was dark and Adriana didn't know where the Joker was. The stairwell was relatively close to his bedroom. She walked by it and saw the door was open, the bed was made, and the room was empty. Once she was in the hall again, she felt silly. She had no idea where the breaker was. The facility was huge and it could have been anywhere. She was more concerned with where the Joker was, in case Bruce decided to come down after resetting the breakers in the penthouse. The Joker would need to hide.
"Hello?" Adriana called out, hearing no response.
Suddenly, she felt a sense of panic. She didn't know what to do first. She decided finding the breaker and resetting it so she could get back upstairs would be her best best. After going through several halls and looking in random rooms, she knew she was running out of time. She took a deep breath after feeling like she had looked everywhere.
She noticed a small light come on. Bruce had restored power to the elevator. She could see that it had gone up to the roof.
Adriana pressed the button, knowing that was likely completely out of time. The elevator came down and the door opened. Adriana went up to the roof.
The roof was dark, aside from the light that came from the elevator. She looked around and didn't see the Joker. She took a few steps as the roof went dark again and the elevator closed. She walked around the area with the flashlight, turning a corner to another area of the roof.
"Hey.." she said as she found him.
The Joker was on the ground, laying on his back with his hands behind his head, looking up at the sky. The wind was relatively strong and it was a very cold night.
"Sorry," Adriana said and stopped shining the light at his face. "We have a situation.."
'Oh?" he said and looked over at her without moving.
"Actually...I guess you could just stay up here," Adriana said. "This is as good a hiding place as any."
"Do I need to hide?" he asked, sounding unconcerned.
"My husband might be coming to the medical facility.." Adriana said. "The power is out and I told him I would reset the breaker. "
"Then reset it and go back," the Joker said as if the solution was very obvious.
Adriana pressed her lips together and looked away.
"Ah.." the Joker said as if amused."You don't know where it is, do you?"
"I don't," Adriana said. "Anyway..just stay here and I'll go tell my husband he needs to reset the breaker."
"Or I could just reset it and you go back home," the Joker suggested.
"So you know where it is?"Adriana asked.
He smiled and sat up and then stood up.
"Let's go,"he said and walked over to the door of a stairwell by where he was laying. "This was is closer to it."
"Okay.." Adriana said and followed.
He led them through storage room containing various medical equipment, including an old MRI machine that took up most of the room. He walked behind it.
"Shine the light here," he told her and she saw the panel on the wall.
She watched as he reset the breaker. It was an enormous gray metal box that was taller than he was. He went down the long line of switches and reset each one. When he was finished, the lights were on. Adriana turned off her flashlight.
"Thanks for that," Adriana said. "Jack."
He smiled as he had earlier, with amusement at hearing her use his name.
"You are welcome, Adriana," he said and shut the door on the breaker.
As he shut the door, Adriana felt a sense of deja vu. As if she was remembering a moment from long ago. repeating itself now. The exact moment was lost on her, but for second she saw him. The old him. The way that he was before. Hair with green waves, paint all over his face, scars jutting from his cheeks.
It was as though, for the first time she saw that he was still the same man that she had known. Exactly the same person. Lately, he had become such a beautiful man, that it was as if she was seeing him as transformed into someone different. Someone she didn't quite know anymore.
But for that second, she saw that he was who he was. The familiarity surprised her. It was a stunning moment, and when it was gone, she felt heartbroken. It was senseless. She felt like she missed him terribly, even though he was right there. She missed the scars.
"You're all set," the Joker said, wondering why she was still standing there staring at him as though she was trying to solve a puzzle.
"Yeah..thanks," Adriana thanked him again.
"So, perhaps you should get going," he Joker said. "Before..ah..Bruce Wayne begins to worry."
"He knows," Adriana felt words slipping out of her mouth. In her mind, she was telling herself to shut up.
"He knows the lights are on?" the Joker said. "I'm sure he does."
"No," Adriana said, her mind screaming at her. Telling her not to burden him with this. He was only here for three more days and he should leave in peace without having to hear about her problems.
"What then?" he asked.
"He.." Adriana felt her brain chemistry causing her thoughts to unravel.
It was his scent. He smelled fresh and clean but she could still smell the natural scent. The pheromones turning her brain from logical to animalistic. She felt dizzy. The chemistry sending the scents from his skin and hair was simply too supreme, complete and perfect.
"He?" the Joker asked, looking at her strangely.
"He knows what happened between us," Adriana said, feeling autopilot finally kick in to get her mind to function enough for her to speal. "He knows you are my son's father. I don't know how he found out. It's why I've been seeing Dr. Kapoor for the last couple of days. My husband thinks I should be in therapy."
The Joker gave her a look that was nearly blank. He wasn't sure what to say to her.
"I..uh.." he said and lifted an arm, running a hand through his hair. "Well it makes sense he would do that if he has found out what happened."
"No it doesn't," Adriana said. "You think I need therapy too?"
"I said nothing of the sort," he said. "I said it makes sense he would send you. I mean...it only makes sense."
Adriana felt her jaw tighten.
"Yes, because he thinks you raped me," Adriana said.
The Joker made a face as if it was obvious and not surprising.
"And you don't care," Adriana said.
The Joker took a deep breath, as if the discussion was getting tough and exhausting for him already.
"Look...listen.." he said and licked his lips. "The Batman and I have a complex history. You complicate it even more. Not sure what you wan't me to say here."
"I want you to say that you know you never hurt me and you don't want my husband to think that," Adriana said. "Because that's a horrible thing for him to think."
"Yes it is," the Joker said. "Horrible."
Adriana raised her eyebrows, knowing that she had made her point. She was right.
"However," the Joker went on. "In this particular instance..weighing the amount of horror your husband could experience-"
"You're saying he would be less horrified with the idea you attacking me than the truth," Adriana said.
"I apologize for...eh...complicating?" the Joker asked as if searching for the right word. "Your marriage. But I assume you've already told your husband the truth."
"Yes, and he won't listen," Adriana said.
"So there's nothing more to do or discuss," he said and walked around the MRI machine.
"I could try...again and again to tell him the rest of the truth," Adriana said the the Joker's back as she followed him and grabbed his arm to stop him.
"Which is?" the Joker asked.
"That.." Adriana said. "I loved you. I fell in love.."
The Joker looked into her eyes, the statement making his eyes flicker as he looked at her up and down as if wondering if he heard her right. He took another deep breath and looked away and held her with both hands on her shoulders.
"Do yourself a favor," he said firmly. "Don't tell Bruce Wayne that."
"Why not? It's the truth-" Adriana said but the Joker was already looking at her sideways and shaking his head.
"I don't care what Bruce Wayne thinks of me," the Joker said. "But for some reason you do. If you tell him you think you..loved me...he will have you committed. I've seen it happen. Rich people do that to each other all the time-"
"Stop," Adriana said, shrugging his hands off of her. "Think? You think... I only think I loved you? I loved you! So much-"
"He will also have you medicated-" the Joker said, cutting her off.
"I know you never felt that way, but I did and I just think my husband needs to know the truth," Adriana said. "He needs to see me as I am which is not some assault victim-"
Adriana stopped speaking as she noticed the Joker's facial expression change sharply. He looked horrified. It was a look she had only seen on his face once. She had Lucius had gone to rescue him from the underground hell the Batman had locked him in. She remembered the horror on his face when they went up to the surface and a helicopter flew overhead.
"What is it?" Adriana asked.
"You think I didn't fall in love with you," he said.
Adriana was speechless. It was as though their conversation had gone too deep too quickly.
"Is that what you think?" he asked, hearing a bit of anger in his voice.
"I.." Adriana said nervously.
"I thought you read my mind," he said. "When we were together. With your mind reading abilities."
"I..I did but," Adriana said. "I mean...when I got pregnant I couldn't hear any thoughts so I guess the first few weeks was all I could really be aware of...I'm sorry-"
"No," he said sighing and glancing away. "Now I understand."
"So..." Adriana said. "I loved you...and you loved me. I think my husband should know. He need to know me instead of being in denial."
Adriana took a deep breath.
"I'm sorry," Adriana said. "You don't need to be hearing about my husband and me trying to have transparency in my marriage."
"No," the Joker said. "I don't need to hear about this."
"Right.." Adriana said. "Sorry..I'm just trying to progress and move forward and it's a lot."
"I understand. But since you're such a fan of transparency," he said.
He took a pause and Adriana felt nervous.
"You said, you loved me and I loved you," the Joker said. "That is not quite true."
"So...you're upset because...what? I didn't consider the possibility that you might have loved me? Even though you didn't?" Adriana asked with confusion. "I know you're capable of feeling-"
"No," he said, stopping her mental gymnastics.
"Then I don't get it," Adriana said. "What's the problem? We loved each other. Tell me what's wrong with that statement."
"There's no problem with the statement, just a minor correction," he said.
"What is that?" Adriana asked and crossed her arms.
"I'm still working to get to where you are," he said.
"Which is where?" she asked.
"You could ask me tomorrow," he said. "Or the next day and maybe I will have gotten there too. To the past tense. Loved."
Adriana swallowed.
"You should head out before Bruce Wayne comes searching," the Joker said before leaving the room.
