February 10
Inuyasha has been steadily recovering since fighting that demon last week. I'm absolutely relieved. I know he heals fast as a half-demon, but I can't help but remember the way my heart nearly stopped when he collapsed to the ground when he had finished fighting that demon. I had never known fear like the moment when his hand slipped out of mine and I thought for sure he was dead. My heart still pounds when I think of the moment I finally got him home and saw just how badly he was hurt.
This morning I had him sitting on the floor while I changed his bandages. When I took the old ones off, I was surprised to find that most of the wounds were healed and the scars were starting to fade away. The worst of his wounds had been the stab in his chest and even that was almost gone.
"Wow, you're doing a lot better!" I said.
"Keh, what did you expect? I told you before you were worrying for nothing."
I narrowed my eyes at him. "You can hardly blame me. You lost a lot of blood and were unconscious for hours. Of course I was worried."
"I was always fine. You just worry too much."
"Oh come on! The first couple of days after it happened you could hardly move! I don't think that's what I call being fine."
He rolled his eyes. "You're exaggerating."
Out of annoyance, I slapped his chest where the stab wound was healing.
"Ow!" he exclaimed. "What did you do that for?!"
"Hmm, so it does still hurt."
He glared at me and crossed his arms. "I thought you loved me."
I giggled. "Of course I do."
"If you loved me you wouldn't hurt me."
"Now you're being dramatic," I replied as I started to bandage up the few places that weren't healed enough yet.
"Whatever."
"Just remember to still take things slowly," I reminded him. "You're not completely healed yet and you don't want these wounds to reopen."
"Yeah, yeah, I know," he replied. Then he sighed. "It's so annoying. I'm not used to being hurt for this long. Most of the time I'm all healed up in a few days."
"Well, you did take quite a serious beating this time. Of course, it's going to take a bit longer. At least you do heal fast. If not, you'd be out for months." I glanced over at Moroha who was sleeping in the baby swing next to us. "It's a good thing she's part demon. Kids fall down and get hurt all the time so she'll need it."
Inuyasha laughed a bit at the thought. "I was always falling down and worrying my mother but I was always healed in hours. One time I fell off the roof."
I gasped. "Really?"
"I'm sure I almost gave her a heart attack when she saw me on the ground with a gash in my head. That one really hurt but it was gone by the end of the night."
I became concerned as I thought of Moroha playing on the roof or jumping through the trees like her father. "Sounds dangerous. We'll have to keep her out of trouble."
"I'll make sure to teach her the proper way to do it."
"That's not exactly what I meant."
I was thinking more along the lines of keeping her off of high places all together but the more I thought about it I knew how difficult that would be. I guess that's what I can expect with demon children.
"Well, you're all done," I said as I finished with his bandages.
"Thank you, baby. I really appreciate you."
"I thought you said I was worrying too much."
"You are. But I still love you."
He was annoying but I accepted it and gave him a loving kiss.
We were interrupted when we heard a knock on the door. Both of us went to get it and it was Shippo.
"Hey, you guys!" he said loudly.
Inuyasha and I nervously glanced over at Moroha and sure enough, she was woken up started to cry. Both of us sighed in dismay.
"Damn you, Shippo," Inuyasha said.
"After we spent all that time trying to put her to sleep." It had taken forever to get Moroha to calm down and go to sleep. We'd had a good 30 minutes of peace and quiet but now I was already exhausted at the thought of having to put her to sleep again.
"Haven't you learned anything from being around Miroku and Sango's kids all these years?"
"Of course I have!" Shippo said. "Watch this!" He went over to stand in front of Moroha. "Hey Moroha, check this out."
He used his fox magic to make little dancing mushrooms. Moroha was amused by this and soon she had stopped crying and there was a smile on her face.
Inuyasha and I were shocked.
"Wow Shippo, I'm impressed," I said.
"Clearly we need you to come over more often," Inuyasha added.
"I'm an old pro at this you guys," Shippo said proudly. "Just leave it to me, I know exactly how to make babies laugh. But my services don't come cheap."
Inuyasha raised his eyebrows. "Excuse me?"
"I can let you know my rates."
"How about we pay you with lunch?" I suggested.
"Hmm, you drive a hard bargain," Shippo said thoughtfully. "What's for lunch?"
"Sushi?"
"I'll take it."
We all went to Miroku and Sango's house for dinner this evening. While we were waiting for dinner to be done, the kids had Shippo and I sit with them so they could show us a book on demons.
"This is neat, where did you get this from?" I asked them.
"We went to the demon slayer village last week and borrowed it from their library," Miroku explained.
"This is a kappa," Midori said pointing to a creature that looked kind of like a turtle.
"I saw a kappa a few days ago when I was leaving my fox demon exam," Shippo said.
"What did it do?" I asked curiously.
"We sat by the river skipping rocks and talking about the weather."
"Sounds fun," I replied, although that wasn't what I was expecting based on the picture of the kappa.
"This is yuki-onna," Shinichi said when he turned the page where there was a creepily pale woman in the snow.
"Ah, the snow woman," I replied.
Sango came over to us and looked over our shoulders. "Ready for dinner?"
"Mommy, what's this one?" Mieko asked, pointing to a demon on a different page. It kind of looked human but it had gray skin, black pupils, and large fangs.
"That's the kisoku," Sango replied. "It's a type of trickster demon. They can be very dangerous."
"You could kill it, mommy, cuz you're a demon slayer," Midori said.
"I think so," Sango said with a laugh. "The demon slayers learn to recognize all kinds of demons so I'd hope I'd be able to spot it before it can play its mind tricks on me."
"You guys, your dinner is getting cold," Miroku said.
"We're coming," I said. I turned to the kids. "Do you want to show us more of the book after dinner?"
"Yes!" they said with excitement.
I couldn't help but think it was cute how excited they were by this. Maybe I'd have been scared to see such pictures of demons when I was really little but these things were right up their alley. It was just preparation for them to become great demon slayers one day.
