13065. Yellowstone is no longer allowed unsupervised trips after her latest jaunt resulted in her bringing back a friend.
13065a. "Why? In the name of God and all that is Holy, WHY?!" - Admiral Briggs
She was bored…there was no other way to put it. Normally, this would not be a problem, but when you were the human form of the most destructive supervolcano on the planet, it was a major cause for concern.
Shipgirls being bored had nearly always resulted in chaos or some part of the base being reduced to rubble. A volcano-girl being bored might mean chaos and destruction on a massive scale. The girl in question here – Yellowstone – being bored had the potential for the end of life on Earth as humanity knew it.
Yellowstone sighed as she stared up at the ceiling from where she lay on the couch in one of the Naval Base's many dorm common rooms. The internet held no interest for her currently. Television had too many annoying commercials. There were only so many times she could watch her favorite animes, and the new seasons of several were yet to be broadcast. She wasn't hungry or thirsty, it was a weekday, so there wouldn't be anyone to play with at the naval base's pool (everyone was either on duty or in class), and the lab where she worked with Phoenix and SoDak was currently shut down after the last 'experiment' those two conducted resulted in a big explosion, a lot of sirens, and Admiral Briggs screaming for quite a while.
The volcano-girl shook her head. The poor man really needed to get a handle on his stress level. She got to her feet and walked out of the dorm, heading towards the front gate of the base. Admiral Briggs had given specific instructions that all volcano-girls – her especially – were to remain on base to avoid any…problems, but a little change in scenery never hurt anyone. She strolled straight through the gate without anyone stopping her; she even waved happily at the Marines who were checking IDs of those entering.
With that little hurdle passed, she headed for downtown Norfolk. A sign caught her eye and what it was advertising looked interesting, so off she went.
Amtrak, huh? She mused. I haven't ridden a train yet…this should be fun!
She started skipping towards the train station, feeling excited about her new adventure. She started singing her favorite song as she made her way to the ticket window.
"I've got the whole world, in my hands…I've got the whole wide world, in my hands…I've got the whole world, in my hands…I've got the whole world in my hands!"

The following day, Yellowstone strolled through her museum of choice. New York – the place she'd ended up in – was a nice place to visit, but only when you got out of the big city. It certainly held a lot of history, and since her summoning she'd found reading and learning quite the enjoyable activity.
She paused in front of one of the museum's exhibits and read the information on the surrounding walls.
"I bet you could tell some stories," she murmured.
"Oh, you have no idea…" murmured a voice beside her.
Yellowstone turned surprise, then smiled welcomingly. "Hi, I'm Yellowstone! Wanna go have some lunch and talk history?"

Admiral Briggs paced in his office. Wright busied herself with paperwork in between worried glances at her boss. They had good reason to be worried; one of the base's most 'unpredictable' residents had gone AWOL. Admiral Briggs had nearly lost it completely when Etna called his office and casually reported that her roommate had not come back to the dorm the previous night and when the other resident 'mad scientists' Yellowstone tended to hang out with – Phoenix, SoDak, and facility-girl Oak Ridge – had replied they hadn't seen her either, it became all hands on deck.
Briggs and Wright both jumped when the phone rang. Wright picked it up.
"Admiral's office…Wright speaking." There was a pause before the light carrier jerked upright in her seat. "You're certain it was her? You did? Thank you very much." She replaced the receiver and turned to Briggs. "That was the front gate. Yellowstone strolled through there two minutes ago, and she apparently brought a friend with her. The gate personnel told her to report here ASAP."
Admiral Briggs collapsed into his desk chair in relief. "Thank God…at least we know nothing bad happened while she was gone; nobody aired any reports of apocalyptic fires and sudden lava flows."
Before Wright could respond, there was a knock at the door and Yellowstone entered, followed by a young girl wearing an old-style police officer's uniform.
"Where have you been?!" Admiral Briggs demanded frantically, rising to his feet. "You know you're supposed to stay on base!"
"I got bored," Yellowstone huffed petulantly. "So, I decided to head out and find something to do." She grinned. "I took an Amtrak trip to New York. You know, it's a really nice place once you get out of the big city."
"You went all the way to New York?!" Admiral Briggs felt faint at the implications of her getting that far without supervision.
"Yup!" The volcano-girl chirped happily. "Toured a couple museums, and the last museum I went to is where I met my friend here! Asked her if she wanted to get some food and talk history, so we went and pigged out on Gray's Papaya hot dogs and she told me all about her past life. She's one of those tsukumogamis Admiral Goto told you about. And she can do a neat trick, too!"
Briggs glanced at the girl, who was looking around the room with interest. She was of average height for someone in their late teens, and her short blonde hair had streaks of white running through it. Her cerulean eyes seemed to miss nothing. Her outfit was that of an old police officer's uniform from long ago, and the sole decoration on it was a simple silver police badge with the number '614' on it. The girl finally noticed the Admiral looking at her and met his gaze with her own, giving him a wide, toothy grin.
Oh, great, Briggs thought. Another lunatic…just what this place needs. He sighed inwardly but pasted a smile on his face.
"And what's your name?" He braced himself for whatever was coming.
The new girl laughed. "Call me Sparky," she replied. "Care to have a seat, Admiral?" Her grin widened as she raised her left hand, and both Wright and the Admiral jumped back in surprise as arcs of electricity coursed between her fingers.
"Isn't that trick cool?!" Yellowstone giggled. Sparky's laughter – tinged with more than a hint of insanity – joined that of her friend before she started humming the opening notes of Metallica's Ride the Lightning.
Admiral Briggs added yet another reason to the now-very-long list of why he yearned for retirement.
