Chapter 229
.
Note: "The Monster Squad" was a 1987 movie, most of these characters are in that movie. Amy, Josh, John, and Samantha are my own original characters.
.
Sean, Patrick, Horace, Rudy, Eugene, Phoebe, in their world they had been known as the "Monster Squad." Everyone had assumed they were just children who liked monster movies, noone could have known they'd one day face real monsters. But they did, they found the diary of Abraham Van Helsing, and it described the night Dracula and others would return and seek an amulet that could bring eternal darkness to their world. This diary was written in german, they got it translated by Chaim, an old man that they just called "Scary german guy." Ironically Chaim had survived the nazi death camps, so he was already familiar with monsters. They won that battle, Dracula and his evil teammates were cast into Limbo. Apparently their story was inspiring to some, thus the muses made sure that their story was told in many worlds. In one such world, another group was inspired and took the same name. This second group was made of Josh, Amy, Samantha, and John. They seemed somewhat starstruck to be in the same room as the real Monster Squad. They were all adults now, but they were the real deal.
.
John: Let me just say, what an honor it is to meet the original Monster Squad.
Sean: Thanks. It's just a little weird that there's a world where we are movie characters.
Phoebe: Makes some sense though. The bad muses made sure that everyone knew who Dracula and the others were. I guess some good muses wanted to make our story known.
Sean: I'm not sure how I should feel about that. DIdn't I hear how you guys robbed four banks in one summer?
Amy: Actually, it was two banks. And really I was the only one who robbed the first one. I guess the others were accessories after the fact.
Sean: Mind if I asked why you robbed two banks.
Josh: We were 17 at the time, and Amy was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. There was an experimental treatment, would have left her alive but in a coma for decades.
Chaim: Sounds like a cruel experiment, I'm not sure that would work.
Amy: In hindsight, that might have been a scam. My parents were desperate enough to believe it, and me and the rest of our Monster Squad, we believed it too. I just didn't want to live like that. But I was 17, a minor, so I had no real choice in that. That's when I found out who my real friends were.
Josh: We broke Amy out of the hospital, ran away. We emptied our college funds to take Amy on one last cross country road trip. But we were captured by her father's bounty hunters. We escaped, but they stole our money.
Amy: That's when I had the brilliant idea to rob a bank. Later, I feared my friends would go to prison, so we came up with another plan. We robbed another bank, hid the money. After I died, they would offer to give this money back in exchange for leniency.
Rudy: Good explanation. It makes sense, it's all about money. So many people stealing pensions and Social Security checks, then give some back to avoid prison. Meanwhile some poor crook steals a Big Mac and soda, winds up on Death Row. As you might guess, I never liked working for the government.
Samantha: You guys worked for the government?
Phoebe: Yeah, Eugene sent the army a letter, saying there were monsters...
Samantha: And they came in with tanks, I remember that part. Never understood why they all came like that.
Sean: They were just a little late. It turned out that president Reagan put a lot of focus on monsters. They knew that the night of the amulet was near, they just didn't know where or when exactly.
John: Oh yeah, Reagan was president at the time, explains the massive tanks.
Sean: Like I said, they just got there a little late. They realized that we now had experience, so when we got older we became monster fighters professionally, like an after school job. Anyway what happenned to you guys in your road trip?
Amy: My tumor made me act, erratically.
Eugene: We figured.
Amy: At one point I accused Josh, who was my great love, of having an affair with Samantha, which was ridiculous for so many reasons.
Samantha: One of them being that I'm a lesbian.
Amy: I pulled a gun on them, nearly killed them. Yet in the end, they forgave me. I decided I couldn't take the chance of hurting them again, I took the gun and killed myself.
Josh: As much as we all mourned her, we had to move on. With our leverage we were given community service, specifically picking up trash in the park. Over the next 50 years, we all passed away, and joined her.
John: Anyway you guys said you wanted our help?
Sean: Yes, we haven't been able to locate certain people here, people we fear are in Hell.
Phoebe: The Frankenstein Monster, he was good, helped save us all. And this detective, Rich Saper, my father's partner on the force.
Sean: Not to mention the Wolf Man, Dracula's brides, they weren't exactly given a choice in becoming Evil.
Amy: You want our help in rescuing them?
Phoebe: We could use all the help we can get. But if you don't want to...
.
All four members of this second Monster Squad raised their hands, they were all in.
