Chapter 231

Mary led Rudy, Sean, Phoebe, Amy, and Josh deep into the woods. By this point Rudy had shared his fears about Mary with the rest of the group, they were all on guard. If Mary realized they were suspicious she kept up a good poker face. Given the danger they were all in, it made sense that they'd all be a bit nervous. She led them to Van Helsing's camp, yet noone was here. There was evidence of recent life, fires that had been put out, clothing, pots and pans scattered about. It seemed that Van Helsing's freedom fighters left in a hurry. Mary seemed as suprised as the rest.

Rudy: Where is Van Helsing?
Mary; They must have had to leave, maybe Dracula found this location.
Rudy: Yeah, maybe Dracula slaughtered them all.
Mary: I hope not.
Rudy: The question I have is, how Dracula's people found them.
Mary: He has search parties combing through the woods.
Rudy: I'm guessing he also has informants.
Mary: What exactly are you saying?
Rudy: That maybe you're still working for Dracula.
Mary: After what he did to me, never.
Rudy: We heard that of his three brides, two are fighting against him now, but one still works for Evil.
Mary: He's had a lot of "brides" over the centuries. I can only say that of the three of us, none work for him anymore.
Brynn: Sure about that?

The group turned around and saw Brynn, one of the other brides that Rudy killed that night. At first Mary was relieved to see her "sister." But Brynn did not come alone. There were other vampires, including Dracula himself. Brynn was indeed a willing bride of Dracula.

Mary: I don't understand, why would you work for him after all he did to us?
Brynn: I admit, it was a rocky beginning. But now, it means power.
Mary: I remember you begging Dracula to just kill you once.
Brynn: And I remember you begging him to kill you and let me and Julie go. Sounds noble, but you had no leverage. There was no "Take me instead of them." There was only first and second. Now, there is only hunter and prey.
Dracula: Indeed. You were right Rudy, Van Helsing's people left just before we came. I don't know how he figured out that Brynn is a traitor, perhaps he is just very good at his sixth sense. Either way, I want to know where they are now.
Rudy: Well we're new in town, haven't a clue where he is.
Dracula: But Mary might.
Mary: I'm still a former vampire to him, he didn't trust me enough to tell me of any secondary location.
Dracula: You might be telling the truth, but me and my friends will feed on you until you tell us. If nothing else, you will provide us with food for a little while.
