Ethan couldn't sit still. As he paced the small bedroom, he never took his eyes off of Rupert. The man still hadn't woken. Had the healing taken too much out of him? The spell shouldn't have used any of Rupert's own energy but, well, the human body was tricky. Or perhaps Ethan had put too much power into knocking Rupert out before moving him into the car. Or perhaps the Council had done something, put some sort of spell on him so he couldn't wake if moved from their labs. It'd have been a paranoid move on their part but Ethan certainly wouldn't put it past them.
And so, when Rupert sat up screaming, Ethan's first thought was to blame the Council but as soon as Rupert started clawing at his own head as if trying to tear it open, Ethan knew he'd been wrong. Ethan had never seen this before or not with his own eyes at least, but he had Rupert's memories. In the early days, shortly after Eyghon had gotten his hooks into Rupert's soul, the demon had gone too far and Rupert had literally tried to claw the demon out of his head.
Ethan grabbed Rupert's hands and yanked them down, only succeeding because Rupert had weakened to the point of invalidism under the Council's so called care. "Stop it," Ethan shouted. "You're killing him."
"And why shouldn't I?"
Ethan jolted back, dropping the hands as he took an involuntary step away from the bed. He hadn't known that domination would allow a demon to control a body. Rupert must be further gone than he'd thought.
"He promised me the Slayer, all the Slayers, and gave me nothing," the demon continued. "He deserves to suffer."
Oh Gods, Rupert had been weakened by the Council. He didn't have the strength to fight Eyghon. This could kill him. Ethan felt a steely resolve settle into his spine. Eyghon could not have his Rupert.
"No. You can't hurt him."
Rupert's scream tore through the room. So loud that Ethan couldn't hear himself shouting. He could only hope that Eyghon heard him. "Any book that mentions you, I can still destroy. You'll be trapped forever, never able to return to flesh."
The screams stopped. Rupert whimpered but Ethan sighed in relief. This wouldn't hold Eyghon off forever, but it would buy Ethan time. He'd need it if he was going to get the demon out of Rupert's head. And he couldn't do that in London. Not that he knew how to force the demon out of Rupert's head or how they could escape London.
