Chapter 248
.
The recent skirmish had given Dick Tracy a rough idea about law and order in Hell. Gangsters fighting and killing each other repeatedly for a tiny bit more money, more power, more paranoia. On the plus side, if the final battle came it might be easy to get the evil ones to turn on each other. Still, they were curious if there was any form of law in this world. Through a little research they found that there was at least one law firm in this particular mini-kingdom. It was known as Wolfram and Hart. Britt Reid, also known as the Green Hornet, was able to arrange a meeting with two of these lawyers, Jerri Hogarth and Holland Manners.
.
Britt: Thanks for this meeting.
Holland: It's always an honor to meet with someone with such a large bank account.
Britt: Me and my friends caused some problems, might need a few good lawyers.
Jerri: You understand that we only handle a certain class of clientel.
Britt: Between the five of us, I'm sure we killed enough people to qualify.
Jerri: We mean in terms of money. You and mr Cranston would qualify, but a servant, or an honest cop, would not. Still, upward mobility is possible. Most of these "gangsters" you fight, started with nothing. I myself was born in a trailer park. Do you know what schoolkids do to poor children? They make sure that school is as much a living hell as home. But I put myself through school, and I worked damn hard to achieve all that I had.
Tracy: I heard of you, from Jessica Jones. You had ALS, made sure to spend everything you had on yourself before you committed suicide. Somehow having ALS didn't make you want to donate something to it's research?
Jerri: No, it did not.
Tracy: I'm starting to see why you're in Hell.
Jerri: Maybe, and I will make the best life I can for myself.
Tracy: Like helping gangsters pollute the streets with drugs, booze, gambling, prostitution.
Jerri: Noone is forced to partake. If they're too stupid to not know their own limits, others shoul profit from this. Besides, you need our help now.
Tracy: Okay, how can you lawyers help us not get in trouble for having gangsters shoot at us?
Holland: Admittedly Big Boy and the others were at fault, and they took their own chances when they sought revenge. You are all free to leave. However, your past vigilantism, breaking up gambling casinos and brothels, that has some of our clients nervous. They want to make sure you don't infringe on their right to freeley operate their business.
Britt: Agreed. We will leave. I'd say we learned what we need to know about law and order in Hell.
