Chapter 386

Today was a big day. A very big and important day.

And he should have asked someone else to help him instead of Steve.

Because Steve showed up with Rowan first thing that morning, which was not supposed to happen. It was supposed to be two bros putting together Charlie's room and his new race car bed. They were supposed to have the whole morning together to get everything done in Charlie's room, then Rowan would come in the afternoon to make cookies so the house smelled amazing when Charlie came home.

You know, the whole package.

Steve was ready to go. He had a tool belt around his hip with the tools he'd need for his job plus some extra, and Rowan had brought all the ingredients to make her famous chocolate chip cookies.

He noticed right away that Steve was in dark blue and yellow plaid. That meant that he and Rowan went at it that morning. And once he got Steve away from her, Steve admitted that they had had a quicky that morning in the shower and then a more thorough session after dropping Nahele off at school in their empty house.

Which would explain why they were late.

Danny just wanted all of this done. Because Charlie was coming over that night so he needed his room done so he could sleep in his race car themed room. That meant Steve went straight to work and so did Rowan, which made no sense because he wanted the house to smell like cookies when Charlie came home, which wouldn't be for hours.

Steve had climbed up the ladder right away, measuring tape in hand so he knew what size baseboard to put up there.

Steve had the easy job. By the time he had gotten the baseboards bolted to the wall, and had stared getting the checkerboard wallpaper up onto that baseboard, Danny had only managed to get all the parts out of their original boxes and sort of placed where they were supposed to go.

"Hey, can I tell you something?" Steve said, which only won a mhmm from Danny. "I got to say, this is coming along very nicely. I'm very happy with what's happening in this room right now. We should try one of the, you know, we could host one of those shows, you know, those shows where you renovate other people's houses for them."

"Yeah, I do. I hate those shows."

"You hate those shows? Of course you do," Steve said drily. "Cause they make people happy, right?"

"I think that that, uh, glue you're using is making your head dopey. That's what I think."

"No. Seriously, listen to me, aren't you having fun right now? We could, uh, you know, forget the restaurant, this could be your new career. What do you think?"

Why the hell was Steve trying to get into Danny's retirement plans? Why couldn't he retire with Rowan? Why did he have to retire with Danny?

"I think that you need a master's degree in structural engineering to put this stupid bed together. That's what I think," Danny snapped throwing down the piece that was supposed to fit in that slot but wouldn't.

This was absolutely ridiculous. He just wanted to give his son the race car room he never got because he shared a room with Matt and Matt wanted dinosaurs.

Steve turned at that point to watch him try and fit the piece somewhere else.

"No… no, no, hold on, wait… that doesn't… it doesn't… do not screw that there, Danny!"

"I know that I'm not gonna screw it down there. I know that, okay?"

"I got an idea. Hey, why do you read the, uh, instructions?"

"Cause I don't have the instructions."

"Where are they?"

"They're in the trashcan."

Steve paused. "Wait, what?"

"Okay the cookies are done," Rowan said appearing in the room. She then her eyes turned to Steve. "Oh, look at my handyman in blue plaid. If you're not careful I'mma pull you off of that ladder and demand you ravish me."

Steve was already grinning, this big beaming smirk of his. Danny just knew that pure sexual bullshit was about to come out of his mouth. Probably something to do with Steve's tool and whether or not Rowan could handle it.

"Oh, wow, hey, look at me," Danny cried snapping his fingers at her. "The two of you went at it twice today. No need for round three. And definitely not in my house."

Rowan turned a dry glare onto Steve. "Steven."

The man winced. "I'm sorry, I bragged. I brag about my absolutely amazing sex life."

"In detail," Danny added and Rowan gasped.

"Steven!"

"Oh come on, like I don't know you tell your brothers about our sex life? Please remember that. The man who used to be my nemesis knows all the little details about my sex life. I have yet to complain."

Bullshit he used to complain a lot. He just didn't anymore cause he was trying to not argue with his wife about her brothers.

"Wo doesn't want to hear about it, but Con is all about those juicy details," she admitted and then sighed. "Fine, you boys can have your locker room talk but keep your boyfriend from throwing it in my face."

"He is not my boyfriend," was shouted at her from both Steve and Danny and she just rolled her eyes.

"Anyways, you can't be done. You can't be done with the cookies because by the time Charlie comes home the smell will be gone."

"Danny… chocolate chip cookies take fifteen minutes to prepare and fifteen minutes to bake. How… how fancy were you expecting these cookies to get?"

"They don't need to be fancy Ro, I just want the house to smell like warm cookies when he gets home."

"He's not coming home for hours Danny, why did you tell me to bake them now?"

"I unno, Rowan!" he cried. "If we're going to be honest, I thought you were coming later, not right away!"

"Oh so you boys wanted one on one bonding time huh?"

"He is not my boyfriend!" Steve shouted again knowing right away where that question was going to lead.

"Are you sure? Cause he's mad you brought me on your little arts and craft project," she said and Steve groaned. "Look, I'll whip up some more batter, and you can bake them when it's time for Charlie to come over okay?"

"Fine."

"What's uh… what's going on with the car? Is it supposed to look like that?"

"He threw the instructions away," Steve answered absently.

"I don't need instructions," Danny repeated. "And it's fine."

"It's not fine, cause you need them."

"I do not need them!"

"Why would you throw the instruction away, Danny? Who does that?"

"I didn't think I'd need them to put together a child's bed," Danny cried jumping to his feet to yell at Steven to his face.

He completely missed Rowan's cocked head, and her appraising eyes on the pieces he had left behind.

"You know, the best part about that, Danny, is that only a child would throw away the instructions," Steve said coming down from the ladder. "Give me that screw gun."

"Actually could you give me the screw gun?" Rowan asked. "I'd let to get these bolts the full way in place.

Danny turned around. The car frame was practically all put together. All the pieces were slatted into the right places all that needed to be done was to get the screws in place.

"What did you do? How did you do that?"

"Uh… well… just judging by the grooves running through this panel it clearly lined up to this one, and just judging by the tracks in the holes, these screws were what were supposed to hold it into place and…" Rowan glanced up to where Steve and Danny were all staring at her with her mouth open. "I used to help my dad when he tinkered. I can make Ikea furniture my bitch. But sometimes even I need instructions. This will probably need instructions."

"Your skill set is ridiculous, you know? Like… how were you going to be a real person with the skill set you have? How does…" he gestured to everything around her. "This fit in with the driving and the thieving and the singing and the baking."

"I wasn't really well rounded, and that was a problem," she admitted. "But I've mostly figured it out and I make more than either of you…"

Steve half laughed at that. "She's got a point."

"Shut up, the two of you. And you, away from the car," he ordered.

"I mean, if you say so. But if you were struggling before and you don't have the instructions I don't see how you're going to be able to put this car together."

"Okay you know what, take it apart, take it apart I'm going to do it myself," he said but Steve was pulling the drill out of his hands.

"Ah, ah, ah, nope, give it to me. You cannot be trusted with the big boy's toys. You threw the instructions away, and we're not going to let you take apart all of Rowan's hard work, because we probably won't get it back together the same way if we do."

Danny turned onto Steve immediately. "Give me the drill."

"No."

The only thing that saved him from getting punched was the doorbell. Cause Danny was about to swing. It probably wouldn't have gone well anyway with Mrs. Void-Powers behind him, but he was about to.

"Someone's at the door," Rowan sang out as if Danny didn't know that.

The person rang the doorbell again which was unnecessary because no one moved that fast. "Give me the screw gun. It's my screw gun. It belongs to me."

"Will you get the instructions?"

"They're under some cracked eggshells right now if it's the kitchen garbage," Rowan said. "Maybe we should give me the drill since you two can't share."

"It's my drill and it belongs to me. You just stole it," he said ripping it out of Steve's hands. He almost turned around to hand it to Rowan, then he remembered why he shouldn't do that. "And I'm not giving it to you because you can't be trusted with power tools!"

"What since when?" Rowan cried.

"Since you dropped the hammer on Steve's head."

And she had done that.

After Steve's birthday, after he had put up all the pictures they had gotten, she had decided that she was going to put up the furin they had gotten from Japan on her own. Since Steve, the control freak, hadn't let her help with the pictures, granted she chose where they went on the wall, but he did all the hammering and hanging.

She took his hammer and nails while he was in the washroom, didn't take a ladder, but the kitchen chair, and was precariously attempt to nail into the hanging roof above the lanai. Steve went out to ask her what the hell she was doing and she dropped the hammer right into him, gave the man a concussion.

Rowan blew a raspberry at him. "That wasn't a power tool. That was just a hammer."

"No," Danny said as the doorbell rang again. He was now heading to the door to get this person to go away. Ringing the doorbell like they were a debt collector. Who did they think they were? "Don't touch my bed while I'm gone. I mean both of you."

"You're a very frustrating person you know that?" Steve called, but Danny wasn't out of the room for less than two seconds before he heard Rowan's giggles.

"I swear to god, I come back in that room and you two are making out, I'mma throw this drill at your head!" Danny called as he moved through the kitchen to get to the door.

He got the door open and was surprised by who he saw there.

Because he wasn't ever expecting to see Captain Tanaka again.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

Tanaka had been his captain before he got suckered into Five-0. Literally.

The man had never liked him. He had wanted to promote from within for that open Detective's position, he had not been happy to take on Danny, who was from the mainland and had a chip on his shoulder.

At that point he was not happy in Hawaii. The only reason he was there was because Rachel moved their daughter out there. He was there to see Grace. That was it.

He and Rachel were arguing every five seconds, he couldn't find a good pizza place to save his life, he was miserable.

The last case he had been on, you know, before the McGarrett case that basically ruined his life, had been a murder. Up on Puhano street, it was a drug dealer who got clipped. The case went cold when his witness, Ahe'ahe Makino, disappeared. Or well, that was the theory, Danny's theory was that he was killed and they just never found the body.

Now Makino, he had called the precinct to talk to Danny, but Danny never talked to him. The guy had hung up before he could. When he tracked down where he was coming from, it led to a motel. His guy was gone, place was ransacked.

They never did find him.

Then Tanaka put him on John McGarrett's case, Danny met Steve and then he was forcibly conscripted into Five-0. And though he liked to say it was the worst thing that ever happened to him, it really wasn't. Because as much as Steve frustrated him, he loved the guy, he loved that he always had his back.

He even loved Rowan, even when she frustrated him more than Steve did.

But Tanaka wasn't there to hash out stories now that he was retired. This wasn't a social call. This was business.

You see, he figured out that Ahe'ahe Makino had been up in the North Shore for seven years. In the Haleiwa Assisted living center.

He had been found seven years ago at the bottom of Ka'ena point by some hikers with several head injuries. He had been in a coma ever since. He had been transferred to the Haleiwa Assisted Living Center when there was no identification and no one stepped up to claim him. That had been where he stayed, known only as John Doe since then.

No one would have ever realized it if it were for some small news station doing a piece on the Center and him.

They also reported that there were elevated levels of sugar metabolism in Makino's brain which the doctor's said was a sign that he might wake up soon. Exciting because then they'd know who he was and he could get his life back.

It would also mean that Danny would have his witness back and close that case.

Tanaka had recognized him immediately and went to get Danny, the problem was, if Tanaka and Danny recognized him, the guys who tried to off him definitely would. So they had to move him into protective custody ASAP.

This meant leaving Rowan and Steve in the house to finish up the room redecoration, with clear orders to not touch the car-bed and to not under any circumstances have sex in his house, then the two of them were heading up to Haleiwa.

Danny and Tanaka walked into the Assisted Living Center, Danny flashed his Five-0 badge as Tanaka no longer had one. They explained what they knew about John Doe/Makino and that he was in danger and they agreed to let him take control of the situation.

Danny went up to his room, Tanaka stayed to talk to the Administrator and to gather his effects.

In those effects was a piece of the business card Danny had given him when he first met him. Those old janked up cards they had given him when he first got to the Hawaii, where his name had been printed as Donald. Every time he handed out a card, he'd have to scratch it out and write his real name under it. He had given one to Makino the day he met him, and there it was, amidst the things they had found on Makino. Just the corner where his name had been written though, it had clearly been ripped from the card.

It really was him.

Tanaka agreed, protective custody was a must, but before they could call anyone an alarm started blaring. The Center was going on lock down, some kind of security breach.

Give you one guess what that was.

Tanaka went down to the desk to explain what was happening, again, and to get a nurse to help move Makino. Danny went back into his room to stay with him, to make sure no one got to him.

But he wasn't just going to sit there blind. No, he was going to call for help. And he knew exactly who he was going to call.

Luckily for him Steve picked up on the second ring.

"Hey, guess what? I'm looking at a fully assembled Mach Five, that I put together… without any…"

"We both know Rowan put it together," Danny snapped interrupting him. Why was he even trying to lie? "Right now I have a situation. Someone is trying to kill my witness, Makino."

"Wait, wait, what are you talking about?"

"I don't know what's happening, okay? This whole place is on lockdown right now. Uh, we need to move this guy. A guard has been killed or something. I don't know. I could use some backup. HPD is 20 minutes out so please, if you could, uh…if you could get here, that'd be great."

"Okay, okay, I'm on the way."

"Don't listen to anything I said over the years about driving like a sane person. Just get here as fast as you can, okay?"

"Yeah sure."

"Wait, wait, before you leave. Your wife… is your wife still there? Can I talk to her?"

"I mean... sure?" then he heard Steve say: "Hey babe he wants to talk to you."

"Hey Danny what's up? Keep in mind if you bitch about me putting that car together, I'll hang up this phone."

"Look I have a situation…" '"—Uh-huh…" "… someone is trying to kill my witness. The hospital is in lock down and I really need some help. Can you ask if one of your brothers can come help me?"

"Sure, I can ask. Who would you like Wo or Con?"

"You know what, can I have the rabbit?"

"I'll see if he's free," she said. "I take it you're taking Steve?"

"Yes Rowan, I kind of need Steve alright?"

"Aw okay, that's fine, I got what I wanted anyway."

"Oh my god, you did it, didn't you? How long did you wait after I left? How long before the two of you went at it in my… I'm going to have to burn the place down."

"Stop it Danny, or I actually will burn the place down, you know how much I love fire," Rowan warned. "Hey you want me to pick up Charlie?"

"Yeah, you might have to pick him up from school."

"No problemo, I'll swing by after I pick up Nahele and Grace, I'm assuming it's a Grace weekend too."

"It is, now… I don't mean to be annoying but can you please call your brother cause we're on a time crunch here."

"Oh sure, sorry. Give me a sec."

And then she just hung up the phone.

Great, just great. Now he was playing the waiting game. Waiting for Steve to get here, or one of Rowan's crazy brothers. Was it bad that he was literally hoping for the criminal to show up first? Cause if they did these guys would be smoked.

"Excuse me sir, you're not supposed to be in here…"

Danny whirled around, his gun drawn on a nurse. Damn it, why the hell would she sneak up on him like that?

Seriously, almost got her idiot self shot.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, okay?" he said, lowering his gun.

She looked like a normal nurse, he could see a badge clipped to the waist of her pants. She had regular nurse scrubs and shoes. Nothing abnormal about this nurse.

"Everything's fine. This is good. I, uh, I need help moving this guy. I'm with Five-0. Uh, I don't know what I'm doing." That was an understatement. "I need you to…"

"You want me to move this patient? We're on lockdown right now."

"That's why we need to move him," Danny said. "So come on."

"I'm sorry, but this patient has to remain where he is. I'm not authorized to move anyone during a lockdown."

"Okay, then call somebody who is authorized. I need to move this guy out of this room right now, you understand?"

"Yes sir, of course. If you just give me a minute, I need to first check on Mr. Makino."

Danny nodded and left her side to go to the door as she moved over to Makino's side. He was at the door for two seconds before he realized it.

How the hell had she known Makino's name? Everyone here knew him as John Doe, there was no way that the gossiped moved around here that quickly.

Danny moved away from the door and towards her.

"Uh… Excuse me. Makino? How, uh… how'd you know his name?"

The nurse whirled around and swung the tray she had been carrying at him, which knocked the gun out of his hands. While he was distracted she kicked him back and into a cabinet. When he got up, she was coming for him, he punched her in the stomach but she didn't go down. So, he picked her up best he could and slammed her down to the ground.

He figured hitting the ground would wind her, that he'd be on top and get the upper hand but that was not what happened.

She managed to grip the back of his neck, her legs around his waist keeping her pinned. Danny put his arm across her neck and pressed down, but she moved it with her spare hand, then she maneuvered herself so she was on his back and then it was him that was getting choked out.

She had dropped her needle, and he was trying to reach for it when suddenly glass shattered somewhere behind him. There was a low piercing sound that Danny recognized and then the woman jerked before going limp. Limp enough for Danny to shrug her grip off of her and get free.

When he turned around, coughing and struggling to breathe he saw that someone had shot the fake nurse in the head. Which was good cause the woman was probably a contract killer. Then he heard a noise coming form the window.

Danny turned yet again, gun up and ready to go, but it was just Sin Nombre struggling to pull himself up through the window and into the room.

Grunting and groaning as he went. "Jesus, almost there," he huffed before rolling over the edge, hitting the floor, and popping back up. "Whoo! That was one hell of a climb. I used to be much better at that. I think I'm going soft."

Danny looked down to the woman who had been on his back. Sin Nombre had shot her in the head. Dangerous choice considering Danny's head had been behind hers. Luckily Con had shot above, just below her hairline.

"You couldn't fucking use the door?" Danny asked.

Sin Nombre was in the process of patting his black jeans down to get any invisible dirt off of him. He wasn't wearing the leather jacket today. It was just his white tee-shirt, he had the mask tucked into his waist band and two under arm holsters. And what looked to be a holster behind his back.

He looked up to Danny and pinned him with a dark glare.

"I just saved your life, a thank you is the proper response," he growled heading over to the woman. He got to her, pulled out one of the guns from under his arms and promptly shot again. Thank the lord he was using a surprised pistol.

Yet another head shot. This one at close range which meant blood spattered everywhere.

"Jesus!" he cried. "What the hell is the matter with you?"

"What's the matter with me? How the hell did the fake nurse get the drop on you? I mean really?" he shot back.

"Okay you know what? I don't have time for this. Why the hell did you come through the window? You Tarzan now? She couldn't poof you into the fucking room?"

"Well she wouldn't throw me into the room cause, you know, machines. Too many in a hospital and she didn't want to chance it. Since everyone in here is on life support," he snarled. That was actually a really good excuse. He could not get mad at Rowan for that one, she made a very wise choice. "The place is on lockdown, you've got bad guys posted up at the front entrance, so… what did you expect me to do? Open fire on the lobby? Is that what you want me to do?"

"No… obviously not," he growled.

Sin Nombre then walked right up to him and slapped him across the face. "Fucking call me Rabbit again and so help me, I'll stab you. I don't give a shit if you're McGarrett's boyfriend."

"Boyfriend? He married Rowan," he snarled. "And you know what, you're literally wearing…"

"I know exactly what I'm wearing, but unless you be my little Ro you ain't fucking callin' me rabbit. You got me, ese?"

"I get you."

"Aces, now who am I killin'? Why they after you? And how bloody do you want it to be?" he asked as he put that white rabbit mask on his face.

"You came here without knowing the story?"

"Look, Ro said: hey you wanna shoot some people and I said yes cause I'm bored. I don't give a fuck who I kill, but I'm assuming you do?"

Yes, yes he did.

"Right, so this Makino," Danny said pointing to the man in the bed. Sin Nombre followed his finger and then sighed.

"Aw, shoots man, he dead. Rest in Peace," he said making the sign of the cross. Danny just stared at him. Jesus Christ, he wanted to hit this boy.

"No, he's not dead he's on life support."

"If he can't run, he's fucking dead, hombre."

"Okay, you know what, shut up, just shut up," Danny snapped. "You're going to help me keep him alive alright. Cause those people out there are trying to kill him, and so was this nurse…"

"So what he do?"

"He's a witness…"

"Aw, she sent me down her for rat?" Sin Nombre asked. "Damn, I shoulda asked more questions before agreeing to this one."

Danny sighed almost exasperatedly. "And why didn't you?"

"I unno, I figured without McGarrett around it would be more fun. Coming to find out that you are not the fun one in the relationship."

Danny almost slapped the white plastic rabbit mask right off of his face and he might have if Tanaka hadn't come through the door with yet another nurse.

Sin Nombre grabbed him immediately, twisted his arm and had Tanaka down on his knees, while both Sin Nombre and Danny were pointing guns at the new nurse.

She took looked like a nurse. She was in pink scrubs, with long grey sleeves from her undershirt. She had these cat eye clear glasses that she was glaring at them out of and shaved grey hair. She also hadn't run away screaming at the sight of a guy in a white plastic rabbit mask or Danny despite that both of them had guns.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa," Tanaka was crying.

"Get offa him, he's with me."

"Aces," he said as he dropped his hold on him. He then turned to the nurse "What about the female bogey?"

"Take it easy! She's a nurse!" Tanaka said as he got to his feet.

Danny gestured to the body that lay on the floor with two bullet wounds in her head now. "So was she. ID! Show me your ID right now."

She pulled her badge off of her shirt and showed it to him. "See, my name is Jenny Kitson. I'm a nurse. I've worked here for six years."

"Check it," he ordered and Sin Nombre snatched it right away.

He looked it over, looked back to Jenny and then said. "Yep, she's clear."

"Let me see it!"

"Really?" he asked. "Why did you have me check if you weren't gonna believe me?"

"Just give it to me."

"Well alright," Sin Nombre snapped before handing it over to him. The nurse tried to move but that just got both Danny and Sin Nombre's guns back on her causing her to freeze.

"Don't move."

"Seriously?" she asked in a tone that very much was giving him sass.

Wow, like he needed that right now.

"He's a little tense."

"Yeah no kidding."

"Well, that would be because this nurse just came in here and tried to kill me while trying to kill him, and this one has an itchy trigger finger," Danny snapped pointing first to Makino and then to Sin Nombre. "Give me a break. I apologize, okay?" she was clearly who she said she was too, so he offered her the card back. "You accept my apology?"

"Not a problem."

Well at least she was relatively chill.

"I like your hair Jenny Kitson, it's a bold choice and you rock it," Sin Nombre said offering her a fist bump that she hesitantly took. She looked him up and down and then narrowed in on his mask.

"What is this Halloween?"

"Yeah, I'm the trick," he said he then pointed to Makino. "I'mma post up by the door, y'all figure out how we moving dead-man-walking."

And then he was gone.

Jenny turned back to the fallen nurse. "Mr. Halloween did that?" she asked. "Two bullets to the face was a little overkill, don't you think?"

It was but after the shit he went through with Waincroft, he was prone to measure of excess simply so he knew for sure they weren't getting back up.

"Feel free to give him critiques."

"No thank you," she said right away. "Uh, not sure if it matters but uh, I've never seen that woman before in my life."

"No ID, but she's got a phone," Tanaka said as he fished it out of her pocket.

"Excuse me," Jenny called and Danny turned away from the window he was checking to make sure that no one else climbed up like Sin Nombre did. "I'm gonna go check on my patient, alright? Please try not to shoot me."

Wow, still not dialing back the sass, she was too much like him. This annoyance he was feeling, this must have been what McGarrett felt all the time, with his sass and Rowan's bothers frustrating him, and Rowan's penchant for hiding and lying about things? How did he not have an ulcer already?

"I said I was sorry," Danny grumbled. He then headed for Tanaka. "Hey, we have got to get him out of here, alright?"

Tanaka nodded. "So uh… it's a burner phone. Just a few incoming numbers from today."

Danny took a look at the phone and then pulled up his. Already he could see the red screen up which meant Sandy knew that he was in trouble. Wonderful.

"Sandy, uh… I have a phone in my hand, it's a burner phone, could you link up with it please?"

There was a paused and then Sandy said: Searching for Device to pair to… are you looking to pair to 808-555-2987?

"Uh… is that either of yours?" Both Jenny and Tanaka shook their heads. "Yeah, that's the one Sandy."

Pairing…. Please wait.

A little white ball appeared first on his phone and then on hers. Literally two seconds later it was gone.

Device paired.

"Sandy, I'm going to take a picture, it's of a fake nurse, I want you to send this and that picture to codename Elvis can you do that?"

Yes I can.

Danny took the picture and then the white spinning ball appeared.

That is Lara Kendall. She is a contract killer that is fairly new to the market. She is an expert in hand-to-hand combat but is not good with long range weapons. She is only good for jobs that are within close quarters.

"She's dead Sandy."

Unfortunate. I will have to remove her from my database.

"Just please send that information to codename Elvis please?"

Certainly, Codename Jersey. Please wait as I complete that command.

Tanaka came to look over his shoulder and down to the red screen that just had a white spinning ball on it.

"What uh… what is that?"

"It's the Sanctuary network," Danny said. "She's uh… she's a special program. It got loaded onto my phone… all our phones, Five-0's phones I mean. It's a long story.

Codename Jersey. I have detected that the men that… Dario Mendez… sent to your location have breached the building. Graduating threat level from orange to red. Immediate evacuation is require. I would recommend you join Codename NA and withdraw from this location.

"Thanks Sandy."

Would you like me to activate any near-by players for an assist?

"Do you have anyone near-by?"

Closest hireable associate is more than thirty minutes out but not an associate I'd trust to not double cross you. HPD is less than twenty. Codename Captain America is also enroute with the same ETA.

"Right that should be okay. Just uh… that name… the person who sent these men here, can you uh… can you sent that name to codename Elvis to?"

Certainly. I will be monitoring your progress to make sure this situation doesn't escalate.

"Thank you," Danny said as he pocketed his phone.

God he loved Sandy. When he got out of this, he was going to kiss Kong for creating her.

"So you guys have this smart program that just… does things for you?" Tanaka asked and Danny winced god he didn't want to have to explain that the network was creator by a sociopathic Crime Boss to ensure his sister's safety and she had just… branched it out to everyone she cared about because she didn't want anyone to get hurt.

That would just raise more questions and Danny didn't have time for that.

Especially when the phone suddenly chimed.

Their dead assassin was getting a message. Two of them. "Is it done?" and "Standing by."

Well fuck.

And then when he waited too long the person asked: "U need us to come in?"

Shit.

No, no he did not want them come in.

He sent a quick text back. A simple: All good here. And hoped that would be that.

But then they called. Great now they wanted to talk to the dead lady.

Picking up that call would not be advisable.

"And if I don't pick up?" Danny asked Sandy.

The outcome would most likely be the same.

Great. Thanks, Sandy.

"Uh, alright, uh, Jenny, can you come here for a second, please?"

"Sure?" she said as she moved towards him.

"Okay, Jenny, this is what you need to do. Uh, I'm gonna answer this phone. I want you to just say: We're good. It's done. Can you do that?"

"We're good. It's done," she repeated and then nodded.

"Fantastic, you good?"

She nodded and then Danny answered the phone. "We're good it's done," she said to it and then they hung up.

"Yeah, I don't think they bought that," Danny whispered after a moment of silence.

Confirmed.

"Shut up Sandy!" he cried. God this could not get any worse. They needed to get Makino out of this building as soon as possible. Which was going to be harder than necessary cause the man was on a ventilator.

At least he had help though. Actually where was his help? Why had Sin Nombre been so quiet?

As soon as he thought that, out in the hallway there came a gunshot and then…

"Oh my bad! Sorry, thought you were a bogey! It's alright it's just a through and through it shouldn't kill yah…"

Danny shook his head.

He should have asked for Wo Fat.
