A/N: Alright my wonderful readers, sorry it's a bit late, but here it is. The last installment of this chapter and it's going to be another fun one. Please let me know if you've enjoyed it!
Chapter 387
The plan had changed.
They could no longer wait for HPD and Steven and Sin Nombre was no longer allowed to be on his own after he shot a nurse. Which he did admit he did on purpose because he knew that their adversaries had gotten into the hospital and he had been hoping to scare them off.
And it had worked.
The new plan was getting Makino into an ambulance and move him over to Kahuku station. Jenny was just supposed to hook him up to the portal breathing machine, but she kicked up a stink and refused to leave him, so she was coming too.
Great.
Danny had called Steve to update him on the new plan and he agreed to meet him there. He also gave him advice on Sin Nombre, which was to ignore the one-liners and give clear and direct instructions that he could not, under no circumstances, ignore or misinterpret. He also warned him that Sin Nombre had a thing about threats.
He wasn't sure how it worked, but apparently Sin Nombre took threats as actualities. So if someone were to say: "I'm going to find your kids and kill them," he'd take that as a promise not a threat and just deal with the hazard then and there.
Danny had spoken to Sin Nombre and had been both touched and horrified to find out that Danny was, 100%, included in the group of people that Sin Nombre would take threats as promises for. He also learned that now that Makino was technically in his care, it extended to him and Jenny and even Tanaka too. So Danny had to be clear, don't immediately kill anyone who threatens him.
Sin Nombre had said nothing, Danny couldn't see the emotion behind the mask, but he did hear that: "Okay," that came in the tone of: Yeah, sure I'll agree now but I'm not going to listen to you later.
So yeah, that was going to be a problem.
So together they got Makino out of his room and to the elevator.
Sin Nombre had seen them in, and then waved. "I'll see you guys on down there."
Then he was gone, probably heading for the stairs.
He'd most likely get down there before them and then deal with anything that came in his way.
"Is he going to be okay on his own?" Tanaka asked.
"Oh yeah, he'll be fine," Danny said. "I'm more worried he might shoot the wrong person again to prove a point. I don't think he's ever done that before."
They were all quiet a moment before Jenny said: "Is no one going to say anything about the mask? I mean… why is he wearing that?"
"It's his MO," Danny said. "It makes him feel better just… just don't say anything. He's kinda touchy about it."
Jenny nodded and then they were in silence again. They got to the bottom floor, but before the door opened they heard an ongoing scuffle.
There were shouts, the sound of a silenced gun going off, and then something crashed into the door causing it to shake.
There was a cry of: "Ah! You fucking bit me! Asshole!"
And then gun shots.
When the door opened, Sin Nombre was standing there, gun in one hand, surrounded by bodies, looking at his arm.
He then looked up at the three people and the gurney exiting the elevator but his attention was on Jenny. "Yo! Jenny man, you're a nurse. Is this gonna get infected?" he asked showing her his arm.
Ah so it was him who got bit. Makes sense, how was he going to bite anyone with that mask in the way?
"Probably. The human mouth is coated in germs. But I have disinfectant…"
"Not now," Danny said quickly.
"Not now? Ese! I'm about to contract a flesh-eating virus, we definitely need to take the time now."
"She will fix you in the ambulance, now come on," he said. "You first, please, you're the better shot here."
Sin Nombre sighed but went first as requested. They got to the front unlocked the door and got him out and to the awaiting ambulance. Danny stood back, letting Tanaka help Jenny get Makino in the back of the ambulance while Danny and Sin Nombre stood watch. When he was loaded, Sin Nombre joined them in the back.
Danny got the doors shut and that's when the bullets started flying. Which was when Sin Nombre opened the door again and fired.
Danny didn't even see him aim, it was like he opened that door and knew exactly where to shoot. It was one bullet and the man shooting at them went down.
Danny turned. "Did… where did you…"
"Throat," Sin Nombre said. "Now you gonna drive or what?"
Danny looked back to the man that Sin Nombre had felled. He had to have been 40 feet away. How the hell had he gotten a throat shot at that distance with a pistol?
Yeah he'd ask about that later.
Danny shut that door again and rounded the ambulance to get into the driver's seat. He got them moving and then turned around to ask how Makino was doing.
"He's stable. Vitals are okay. I'm getting a little car sick though," Jenny called back. There was a bit of a pause where Danny contemplated saying sorry but she added: "But your uh… your bunny friend over here isn't looking to good."
Danny glanced back through the window separating them wondering if Sin Nombre had gotten hit. But he was just sitting beside Tanaka holding onto the shelving unit behind him for dear life.
"What the… what the hells the matter with you?"
"This is bringing back bad memories from Bahamas," he called back. "Don't let her jump off that Humvee."
Another bout of bullets ricocheted off of the truck. Danny shouted: "Hold on!" and then braked, causing the truck following a little too closely behind him to slam into the back of the ambulance. Ambulance, of course, was fine, but the truck was totalled. That would buy them some time.
"Con…"
"Ai, you can't call me that ese!"
"Really? You are clutching onto that… that… shelf for dear life and you can still nitpick…" Danny swerved around a car moving way to slow in front of him. "Just… just… can you please just shoot the car following us."
Sin Nombre shook his head. "No. Don't like shooting from moving vehicles. Slight movements can skew my trajectories…"
There was another spray of bullets that came through the windows, glass shattering everywhere.
"For the love of god! Please!"
"I don't want to!"
"Listen to me. I'm going to make a right hand turn. When they follow I want you to lean out the back and light them up, okay? Can you do that."
"I can, but I don't want to."
"We'll you're going to," Danny snapped.
"Ay Dios mío ayúdame!"
"Just shoot them!"
Sin Nombre got himself up and went to the back. "Right, when I say, you're gonna open the doors and stand back. You got me?"
Tanaka looked at him like he was crazy but Sin Nombre was already getting into position. He was down on one knee, one arm braced against his raised knee. He then took his shooting arm, with his pistol in hand and rested it against that braced arm.
"Right. I'm set."
Danny took that turn, he shouted now when he saw them following, and Tanaka opened the door for Sin Nombre.
Sin Nombre shot three times. The first took out the right tire. The second took out the left. And the third, the third went right into the engine through the grill. Who knows what it hit but the engine went up in flames.
The car lost control and swerved into a parked car. He then sprayed the other following car with bullets, which might have been effective if Danny hadn't fucked up.
Danny hadn't noticed he had driven the wrong way into a paid toll area, hit spike strips coming out of the lot. All four tires, popped. They wouldn't be able to drive far on those wheels. They'd have to find somewhere to lay low.
And their bad guys knew it too.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
They had picked a random house that seemed far away from the road and not close to any other houses. Yes that was isolated but that was the point, less of a chance of innocent bystanders getting hurt.
There had only been a kid home, had to be between thirteen to fifteen. They had sent her off to a friend's house, Danny actually told her to run.
Once she was gone they hunkered down in the house. Sin Nombre went around checking doors and windows, talking vantage points and problem spots. Jenny got Makino's life support machine hooked into the wall cause the battery was dying.
Then he had called Steve. He had called Steve and told him what happened. Problem was that Danny didn't know where he was. Jerry couldn't track the location as the signal was too weak.
Luckily, however, Sandy knew exactly where they were and had forwarded that information to Steve.
Other major problem, Steve was 10 minutes away. They did not have ten minutes, but Steve promised that if Danny asked, he'd tell his wife to throw him, even if it made him dizzy. Danny figured if the void messed with Steve throwing him into a fight was probably not going to end well for anyone involved.
And he was not calling Rowan to jump in either when Makino was on an electric life support machine.
He even managed to have an emotional breakthrough with Tanaka. Tanaka tried to call him out for his behaviour, saying that he knew Tanaka didn't like him, and that was why he was acting weird. He kept saying that it wasn't Danny's fault, that yes he had been upset when he kind of got forced to hand him the job, but Danny proved to be a good cop.
That it wasn't his fault that he lost Makino. The guy had hung up on him after all. except that wasn't true, and Danny had to admit that. Makino hadn't hung up, Danny never got to the call. He had been arguing with Rachel, and the one time he didn't just hang up on her was when Makino was on the line.
That was why he felt guilty. That was his problem today, but you know, it had also been productive despite all the problems.
Danny found a hunting rifle and put it into Sin Nombre's hands. He didn't ask him if he could handle it, he simply said: "Here," and Sin Nombre said: "Sweet," and that was it.
Sin Nombre went about loading it and the phone rang. Not his phone, or Sin Nombre's, or Tanaka's. The dead nurse's phone.
It is once again unadvisable to pick up that call.
Danny shook his head. "Sandy. Just… shut up."
And then he did what Sandy said not to.
"Hello."
"We found your ambulance," Yeah it wasn't really well hidden. It was just behind the house. He was hoping that would buy them more time but it clearly hadn't. "We've got your surrounded. No one else has to get hurt. We just want Makino. And if you don't bring him out, I'm gonna have to come in and get him."
"You don't know who I am, do you?"
"No. We know who you are. Your app came up on my phone when we started chasing you. But the Ochoa's have no loyalty to you, Fat or Pierce."
Uh-huh. Yeah. Sandy should have mentioned that to him. But it explains why the kept coming after them even after Sandy booted up.
Danny wanted to tell him good luck. Cause he was going to have one hell of a time getting past two cops and an assassin.
"Hey… Hey… man… put the phone to my ear," Sin Nombre said. Danny turned to him, he was lining up the rifle with something and clearly needed both hands.
"Hold on, someone wants to talk to you."
"Hey. Ese. You shouldn't have your men out in the open like that. Be a shame if someone shot them." He pulled the trigger and then there is a mad scramble of retaliating shots and Sin Nombre ducked down below the window and grabbed the phone. "If you don't walk away, you're going to be next."
Then he hung up.
Danny just stared at him. What… what the fuck just happened?
"What the hell did you just do?"
"I fucking shot one of the guys. Right next to big-bad-leader on the phone. I had him dead to rights…"
"From here?!"
"Yes!"
"Seriously who the hell is this guy?" Tanaka cried.
Sin Nombre turned around right away. "Hello, I'm this guy's boyfriend's wife's brother," he said as if that wasn't confusing as all shit and not true.. "You can call me Sin Nombre. Or NA, either is fine."
NA, right, he had forgotten that Sin Nombre used to go by NA before Rowan gave him the name Con. Seriously, this guy had a lot of names, most of them given to him by Rowan, how did he keep up?
Tanaka turned to Danny. "Isn't Sin Nombre the name of a contract killer?"
"Oh, you know my work?" he asked.
Tanaka dry glare remained on Danny. "Is this guy serious?"
"My best friend, Steven, who's on his way. He married Rowan Pierce. This is brother number two."
Tanaka's eyes widened. Yeah, he got that reference.
"Hello," Sin Nombre said waving to him again. And then he turned back to the window. "Oh, ten bucks says I can get these two guys at once…." He pulled the trigger and then crowed. "Ha Two-fer! Ah I wish I shook on that."
Danny nodded. "Yeah we should be okay, so long as he's doing the shooting."
"He's gotta be running low on peeps. Unless he called for back up. In which case I might be running out of ammo. But you know, I still have the knife, I can go round back and pick em off if you'd like. I mean, we're still waiting for Steve after all, might give me something more fun to do."
Danny shook his head at him. "There's something wrong with you. Really. There is." Sin Nombre just shrugged. "How many people you see out there?"
"Uh… like maybe… three more, not including head honcho. Looks like he's got an injury to the leg. That might work to my advantage later if we get into it."
The new running plan was stay inside, wait for them to try and come inside and pick em off one by one when they did. Or maybe Sin Nombre would just shoot them all on approach, who knows. Could be one or the other.
But then they turned the power off. Makino's machine started beeping cause it's battery was dead. He had about three minutes before Makino would suffocate.
Danny would have to move fast.
"I saw a generator out there when I was stashing the ambulance."
"I'm sorry, you want to go out there?" Sin Nombre asked. "When I have no idea where these fuckers are? Okay that's a lie, I have visuals on at least one, but the other three could be anywhere."
"You're going to cover me from the door."
"Me? With a rifle? Are you nuts?"
"No. Come on."
Sin Nombre sighed but followed him. "You sure about this?"
"No, but I don't gotta choice." He opened up the back door and Sin Nombre followed him.
Danny went out, first holding his gun in front of him, but then he dashed to the generator he had seen by the shed. He had just bent over to pick it up when a shot rang out. Danny turned around and saw a man crumpling against the hood of the ambulance.
Danny stared at the person carefully to make sure they wouldn't get back up.
"Don't just stand there, get the generator and let's go!"
Danny didn't need to be told twice. He picked up that generator just as the heavier gun fire started up. He ran all the way back to the door where Sin Nombre practically grabbed him and threw him inside before he slammed that door shut.
"I got the generator," Danny said bringing it over to Jenny. Jenny got it all rigged up and ready to go but when they got it back online Makino did not have a pulse.
She did compressions for all of a minute before he bounced back and by then Sin Nombre had focused in on Danny again instead of heading back to the window to act as look out.
"Do you guys do this sorta shit all the time?" Sin Nombre asked. "Cause… if this is a regular day at work for you, I'm telling yah, I don't know how you're alive." Danny turned back to him to tell him off but Sin Nombre shook his head. "No, I know how y'all are alive, and I'm guessing it has everything to do with my sister."
Well, he had them there. Rowan's powers and app were a big part of how a lot of them, mostly Steven, stayed alive.
Bullets ripped through the walls and Sin Nombre practically slammed into Danny to knock him down. There was no point in shooting when they were lighting everything up.
They crawled away to a more secure part of the house and they stayed there as the bullets continued. There was a brief pause and the door was kicked open.
First man in got his head blown off.
"Rifle is out," Sin Nombre said tossing it back behind him. He reached into that back holster that had his knife, this giant looking machete thing and he took it out.
Yeah, lot of good that would do him against bigger automatic weapons.
But he was already rocking back and forth on the balls of his toes. He was clearly ready to attack.
There was quiet before the last two men walked in. Danny was ready to shoot, Sin Nombre was ready to move.
And then Steve's silver Silverado slammed through the wall taking the two guys out.
Sin Nombre, upon impact, had turned again, dropping that machete, and taken Danny down to the ground. Geeze, for someone who had been giving him one hell of a hard time he sure was dedicated to making sure that Danny was alright.
Steve got out of the car, Danny could hear him coughing, he also heard Steve calling his name.
As soon as Sin Nombre heard him, he was off of Danny and rounding on Steve.
"What the actual FUCK McGarrett? You trying to kill me?"
"Welcome to my life," Danny muttered.
"Why are you yelling at me?" Steve asked him and Danny rolled his eyes. He had done this to Danny once and Danny had almost slapped him. Sin Nombre probably would.
"Because you drove your truck through a wall and nearly killed me!"
"You were over there, you're fine."
"Debris can kill a man, McGarrett… I mean… fuck!" Sin Nombre looked around and then shook his head. "I'm telling Rowan not to pay to fix your stupid fucking truck. If you do stupid shit like this on the regular you should pay for your own fucking repairs."
He then whirled away, heading towards Jenny. "Hey, Jenny man, can we disinfect my arm now?"
"Sure thing, come on over here," she said and he just left them easy as that.
Danny glanced back to Steve and he couldn't help but smile. Yeah that man was an idiot, but he was his idiot. And he had saved their lives.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Danny had gone with Makino back to his regular hospital. He would be staying with Makino all through the night as Makino was going to be transferred to the secure wing in Kings.
Steve had gone to join Rowan at the Williams' homestead where their kids were situated.
Rowan had reported that she had made the cookies so the house smelled of cookies when Charlie came in. She had also made taco Mac and Cheese which they put in actual tacos cause that was half the fun.
Steve was excited to be home, even if it wasn't his own home. He liked having three kids in the house. And he was having a lot of fun with Charlie. Like… a lot of fun with Charlie. A bit too much fun with Charlie.
And Rowan, being the weak woman she was, was basically panting for him. She always got hot when Steve proved how good he was as a father, and how good he'd be with some little ones too.
She might have been more excited if she wasn't one hundred percent certain that her son was upset about something.
He hadn't said anything to her yet, but she could tell he was upset.
And he was. Poor Nahele was awkward as all hell. He had been trying to distance himself from Grace. Pulling himself back because he wanted to be her friend, her older brother, and he couldn't be a good friend or older brother if he had feelings for her.
But Grace was always texting and calling. He saw her more frequently at school, like she just stood out more now. And now, now he was in her dad's house, and he had to interact. He couldn't just ignore her.
But before Steve had come back, Rowan had been helping Charlie with a mess he made in the washroom with the foaming soap and he and Grace had been alone at the kitchen table working on homework.
The second she was gone she head leant over, tapped his hand and said: "Hey, uhm… are you mad at me?"
Nahele had looked up confused. "No… why?"
"Because you've been weird since we went to the mall."
He had had to pretend that everything was fine, that he was just busy. Cause he couldn't tell her the truth. It was too embarrassing.
After that he made sure that he was not alone with Grace. At all.
But even after Steve got there, even after dinner, even though he was trying to not care, he did. He cared when Grace smiled at her phone and he knew it wasn't a text from him she was smiling at. It wasn't her fault, but this was all getting a little too hard on him.
"Mom," he said as Rowan went about putting the last of the dishes away. Steve had washed them for her, but she was bored and she tidied when she was bored.
"Yes my baby?" she said. Normally that made him smile. It was not working that night. "When are we going home?"
"Uh… well Steve and I have yet to decide which of us is staying here…"
"Dad," Nahele said right away, because he was upset and he wanted his mom. He just didn't want to tell Steve that.
Rowan was surprised by his decision. "Wow, uh… really?" Then she took a good look at him. "Are you okay?"
He was perfectly fine until she asked that. Because he wanted to say no. He was horrified when a quiver met his lips, when tears began to well up in his eyes.
"I'm fine, please, I just wanna go home. Can we go home? And can you come with me?"
"Yes of course, just give me a minute to get settled and talk to your father. Have you packed up your things?"
Nahele shook his head and then went to the kitchen table to pack up his stuff while Rowan went off to see Steve.
Steve was in Charlie's room making car noises as Charlie pretend drove his car bed in a pretend race. She waited for Charlie to win yet another race before saying: "Hey babe, we're heading out, okay?"
Steve was on his feet in a heartbeat. He told Charlie to keep racing, which he went back to doing, and then he met Rowan at the doorway.
"You're heading out? I thought… I unno… I guess I thought that we'd all be staying here tonight."
"Well, that's a sweet thought, Steven, but there's not enough beds, so one of us is sleeping on the couch. And I don't know about you but I don't want to sleep on the couch, and I doubt you do either cause you need to cuddle me to sleep. And I know for a fact that Nahele wants to sleep in his own bed."
"Ah, yes, that's fair."
"And you're doing so well here, I thought it would be better if I went home with Nahele. Okay?"
"I mean, okay, if you think so," Steve said.
"Course I think so. You're the fun Uncle Steve. Who else is going to make the car noises for Charlie? I tried this afternoon I was not good at them."
"It's okay, I don't mind your car noises, even if they are girly," Charlie called.
Rowan just smiled at the boy. "I'll work on it for you," she said. "I'll see you later Charlie, be a good boy for your uncle Steve."
Charlie nodded and then Rowan was walking away with Steve following her.
She got to the front and Nahele was already at the door, his backpack on and her purse in his hands.
"Come on mom," he said.
Steve's eyes narrowed. "Wait a second… 'Hele, are you okay?"
Nahele sucked in a shaky breath and through grit teeth said: "I'm fine."
Steve's eyes narrowed he opened his mouth but Rowan slapped a hand into his chest to stop him. She went to Nahele, opened the door and grabbed her purse from him.
"Alright, sorry for taking so long. Bye Grace! You're Uncle Steve is going to be staying with you, Nahele and I are heading out for the night. If you need anything girly text me. Steve's useless with that sort of stuff."
"I am not!" Steve cried. "I went and got you tampons last month and I got the right brand and everything without having to call you. And I surprised you with your favourite chocolates and ice cream! You didn't even ask for those!"
"Of course honey, you did a wonderful job."
"Wait a second, you guys are leaving? Now?" Grace said. Nahele was already edging out of the door. "Wait let me come say goodbye!"
A fear filled look overcame Nahele's face. "Mom, Keys!" Nahele cried, Rowan turned right away and tossed them to him. He then whirled around. "Bye Grace!"
And then he was gone.
Steve watched him with narrowed eyes as Rowan turned to Grace, who had made it to the door in time to watch Nahele flee and was now staring off after him frowning.
"It's okay, he's just not feeling well. Here give me a hug and then go back to your movie, okay?"
Grace didn't believe her one bit, because she was still frowning. But she gave Rowan a hug before heading back towards the couch.
Once she was gone Rowan went to kiss Steve which he accepted right away, but he didn't let her go. "Hey… hey… hey… before you leave, can you leave me a pancake recipe. One of your fancy ones? So I can make pancakes in the morning?"
"Sure, I'll email you the chunky monkey recipe when I get home. Charlie loves that one."
"You're the best babe," he said and then glanced back at Nahele who was already in the car. "Is he uhm… is he…"
"Oh don't worry about it," Rowan said. "Teenagers, they're emotional. Hormones you know? I'll deal with it. You just worry about these kids. Keep them in line."
Steve rolled his eyes at her playfully. "I'll be fine."
She kissed him again. "Call me if you need me," she said, and he probably would because he would be trying to sleep without her and he rarely managed to get a good sleep without her cuddled into her.
He kept a hold of her hand while she tried to walk away, tethering her to him. She turned back and tried to tug herself free as her handsome husband hit her with please don't leave me eyes. But eventually she got her hand free and then she was in the car with Nahele.
She didn't say anything to him, she simply started the car and started to drive. They were on the road for only a few minutes before the shaking started. Rowan had turned on the music and put the windows down, and she kept glancing at him.
So she saw when the shaking started, even if her son refused to look at her.
"You don't have to tell me what's going on. But it's not good to bottle up your emotions. Okay? Tell someone, or cry it out here or something."
And it was like her words opened the floodgates. All those bottled up emotions were unstopped. The shaking eventually grew worse until the tears started to escape his eyes.
"Thanks, but I'm fine," he said and she nodded. They were quiet for a little while longer and then the tears really started to fall.
Nahele caught her glancing at him but he shook his head. "It's so stupid, I don't know why I'm upset about this."
"You are entitled to your feelings, no matter how silly you think them to be," she said as her son swiped at his eyes. "Uhm… there are tissues, in my glovebox, you know in case you need them. Oh and my purse is stuffed with chocolate chip cookies in case you need a sugar pick me up."
Nahele shot his mom and appreciative smile.
Nahele had never loved his mom more than right at that moment.
She didn't say another thing the whole drive home. She didn't pry she didn't demand answers. They simply drove, with the music blaring and the windows down. All the way home.
