It was the 31st of August 1991, Hermione Jean Granger sat in a window seat of her bedroom a giant book opened on her lap. She was small for her age and had long brown bushy hair that framed her pale freckle-dusted face. Her eyes were doe shaped and a warm chocolate brown. She was reading Hogwarts A History a book she had got almost a year ago on her 11th Birthday. She bit her lower lip in thought revealing her slightly bucked front teeth as she thought back to the day, she had been gifted her book and discovered that she was a witch. It had been ever such a surprise when a stranger had knocked on the door to inform her that she was a witch.
Flashback: September 19th, 1990
Hermione Granger was sat in the living room with her parents, it was the morning of her 11th birthday. She had woken up to the smell of chocolate pancakes and had eaten three of them. She wasn't allowed chocolate very often as her parents were Dentists but every year on her birthday, they let her have as much chocolate and sweets as she wanted.
After she had had her pancakes, Hermione had opened her gifts. From her parents Hermione had gotten a selection of books including Pride and Prejudice as well as some woolly jumpers that she could snuggle up in as winter approached. Her Grandmother had got her a pretty silver bracelet. She had just finished opening her last gift a telescope that her parents had also gotten her when a knock sounded from the front door.
"I wonder who that could be," her mother asked as her Dad got up to answer the door. Hermione had no idea who it could be as she didn't have any friends. Everyone at school thought she was strange and kept their distance from her. Her Mum's parents were on holiday and her Dad's parents had both passed on before Hermione had been born. She didn't have any aunts or uncles either.
She was brought out of her wondering of who was at the door by the arrival of her Dad returning to their blue living room with a tall slender woman she had never seen before following behind him. The woman was older than her parents, at least 60 she would guess. Her hair was greying and pulled into a tight bun. She had light wrinkles around her eyes and mouth, and she was wearing a long green tartan skirt with a white shirt and a matching tartan cape of some sort. Upon her head was a pointed green hat like the ones she saw other children waring on Halloween.
The woman took a seat in the chair opposite the sofa Hermione and her mum was sitting on whilst her dad sat on another chair opposite them.
"Hello sorry for interrupting you all, my name is Professor Minerva McGonagall and I'm the Deputy Headteacher at a school for gifted children such as Hermione here. We'd like to offer Hermione a place at the school next September," she spoke in a rich Scottish accent.
"We have already enrolled Hermione in the best secondary school in Oxford, she will be starting next September. It has the best GCSE results in the county as well as links with the Oxbridge Universities." Hermione's mother told the professor.
"I'm sure that's an exceptionally good school and Hermione would do well there but let me ask you all a question. Have you ever noticed anything unusual happening around Hermione particularly if she has been scared or angry?" The professor asked the Granger family with a knowing smile.
Hermione could remember a few times where she had experienced something unusual. In year 4 she had been bullied by an older boy and she had wished to be home, the next thing she knew there was a pop and she was sat back home on top of her purple bedspread. She had been in so much trouble for sneaking out of school and no one had believed her when she had told them that she didn't know how she had gotten there. Another time she was sat in her treehouse reading and her Mother had called her in for dinner. As Hermione had descended her ladder, she had lost her footing and fallen at least 12 feet. Her Mum had screamed in fright and ran to try and catch her, but Hermione had bounced like she was made of rubber and didn't get so much as a single scratch. When she was angry once her hair had turned bright red as well. There were many other occurrences that had happened over the years, were these what Professor McGonagall were talking about Hermione thought as she nibbled on her bottom lip.
Upon seeing that the family knew what she was talking about Professor McGonagall continued. "What you were thinking about were bouts of accidental magic. The school I teach at is a school for gifted individuals who possess powers. Your daughter is a witch. Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is the best magical school in the world. Hermione will be taught alongside other magical children. She will learn to harness and control her magic and be able to make friends with other children who understand her. Upon completion of her studies if Hermione wants to further her Education Hogwarts has links with some of the best scholars and masters in all of the wizarding world. Provided she has good enough grades she will be able to study for any career our world has to offer."
Her dad was sputtering a bit and her mum looked shocked. "How do we know what you say is true". Her dad eventually asked. Professor McGonagall pulled out a thin wooden stick and pointed it at the pile of wrapping paper still on the floor, the paper folded itself into the shape of a teddy bear and then the bear sang Happy Birthday to Hermione, This left the three Granger's gobsmacked.
Professor McGonagall had stayed at the house for another hour explaining everything there was to know about Hogwarts and the magical world. At the end of the visit, she had given Hermione her copy of Hogwarts A History and promised to come back on the 1st of August to take them to get Hermione's school stuff. Hermione was happy, happy because magic was real, she wasn't a freak and she would have the opportunity to make lots of friends who were just like her.
End of flashback.
Professor McGonagall had returned as promised on August the 1st and taken Hermione and her parents to Diagon Alley. She had given her parents each a bracelet so that they could see and accsess the magical world and helped the family with their shopping.
Now 30 days after her first visit into the Magical world Hermione sat counting down the hours until morning waiting to go to Kings Cross and go to Hogwarts. She was ever so excited because she knew for the first time ever that she was going to make friends.
