Chapter 1
"Today audience we have a very special guess, joining us for a very rare interview, is none other than Dr. Isabella Swan. Chief of medicine at John Adams treatment center and founder of the cure for cancer."
Standing quickly and moving closer to the TV Emmett couldn't believe his eyes. "Rose, babe come quickly!" He yelled unnecessarily towards the backyard.
"Emmett, I swear if this is something else stupid!" Rose threatened walking into the house.
"Babe it's- "Emmett tried to say but was interrupted
"We took the 5-year vacation to get away from human society to strengthen us" She continued heading to the garage instead of living room.
"But babe it's- "Emmett tried again rushing out of the living room towards Rose
"I understand that your excited to have electronics back, but can you please remember that we went away to find peace." She looked up to him pleadingly.
"I know honey, but you have to see this it's Bella! She's a doctor and she found cancer!" He rushed to get out! Rose eyes grew wider with every word
"What do you mean Bella has cancer and is a doctor" She asked left one eyebrow
"No, I mean she is a doctor and she found the cure for cancer, she's on TV come quickly "he said dragging her into the living room. The tv coming into sound.
"Find the cure for cancer, what was it like? Being a woman in a male dominated field, the stress of being successful always keeping in mind that you will one day have to marry and hav-".
"I was told this interview was about my work in Diagnostic's and finding the cure, what does either of those two things have to do with marriage and childbirth?" Bella interrupted with a scowl on my face.
"Well Bella-"
"Dr. Swan" Bella interrupted again
"Wow she not taking any crap go Hells Bells" Emmett said smiling sadly at the tv. The look sent a shock of pain through Rose, she knew her whole family missed this girl.
"I was just saying that being a woman these things must be on your mind?" The interviewer tried to reason panicking. She had been warned about this, but she had ignored it. This was her golden opportunity the first reporter to interview the reclusive Isabella Swan.
"How many women have you asked this question?" Bella demanded
"I-" The reporter tried to answer
" How many women who can't have children, better yet are trying with no results or who've had miscarriages and suffer in silence for fear of ridicule have you asked this question ripping off the barely held scab" At this point Bella was standing now the reporter sat back in her chair mouth agape in horror. "Women aren't just made to have children; we are far more than what your un-educated mind has molded us into. Now to answer the questions you failed to ask, Yes, it is difficult being the youngest in my field, Yes, I will be writing autobiography about my finding of the cure. With that being said goodbye" Bella said before exiting the stage.
"Hell yeah" Emmett screamed jumping into the air causing the house to shack. Rose stood admiring the stunned look on the interviewer's face and the roaring applause from the audience, not chastising Emmett as she normally would.
Emmett couldn't believe that Bella was a doctor now, he excitedly sprinted up the stairs into Carlisle library/Office going to his desk and signing onto his computer. Pulling up Google he began to search for Bella.
He was excited and an awe. After they left her junior year she had tested and graduated early. She had scored a perfect 1600 points on the SAT. Bella had caught the attention of every Ivy League school! She had chosen Harvard Medical and was the first person to graduate Summa Cum Laude in one year, getting her Doctor of Science. In the following year she simultaneously got her PhD in Anthropology, and Chemistry. From what little he could find after getting those degrees she signed on with Delton Pharmaceuticals research team for 6 months before leaving. He couldn't find much information until 2 months ago when she resurfaced with the cure, after testing the cure was shipped to every hospital in the US, then Europe and finally all over the world. The cure was just that a cure. It cured all forms of cancer even extremely rare cases.
Emmett couldn't believe how amazing his little sister was, she had taken the world by storm dominating every optical in her path. He was so proud of her, he couldn't wait to tell her- "and just as soon as the thought crossed his mind, so did the overwhelming feeling of remorse and guilt. He stayed that way for hours; he didn't even move when he heard the rest of the family get home and didn't respond when Carlisle entered and dragged the other chair over to sit by him. They sat quietly for almost in hour listening to Rose tell the family about the interview from downstairs, when Emmett finally lifted his head to look at Carlisle.
"She's amazing, and we left her. She found the cure and, sh- she, we left her Carlisle" standing up and moving around Carlisle desk he turned back to the man that he looked to has a father, his maker. "We are supposed to be family and we left! I know that Edward is your favorite but what about us!" Emmett demanding instantly regretting his words when the look of deep sorrow passed his face and anguished gasp left Esme mouth from the living room.
"You think that I favor Edward over you?" Carlisle forced out swallowing his grief. "I love you all more than anything! Equally, I know that you aren't my children by blood and some not by venom but your mine. I would do anything for you all no hesitation, no questions asked" Carlisle said standing "It's true Edward played a huge decision in our leaving Forks, but no more than Bella." Carlisle sighed "Family come here" he asked in a second the room was filled, and a reluctant Edward following even slower standing by the door looking as if he was ready to bolt.
"There is something more to that night that you guys don't know, but out of respect of Bella I left it out" Carlisle sighed looking down.
"Tell them Carlisle!" Esme said "They are ready to know"
"Your hiding something from us?" Alice asked confused she had gotten better at blocking out the majority of her vision. She only saw things that would affect them and being on isle Esme for the last 5 years had resulted in her barely needing them.
"Having this information is dangerous, the only one ever told and educated on this are the vampires that are effected by it." Carlisle began "Do you know why the Volturi remain unopposed?" Carlisle asked
"They have an Arsenal of gifts in their guard, it's even rumored they have a guard that can set anything on fire with their mind alone" Jasper stated. It wasn't the first time he had strategically looked into overthrowing the Volturi.
"That is one reason but not the main reason" Carlisle said looking down at his desk trying to gather his thoughts. "I realized something about Bella the moment I saw her after the van incident, she's my mate" Carlisle paused while the look of confusion and outrage crossed the different members of the family
"What do you mean Mate?" Rose took a step forward rage on her face. Carlisle grimaced
"Just that Rose, she is my mate. But there is more," he cut in before anyone could object "I knew she was, but she was so young and so in love with Edward, I just took a step back. We wouldn't have left! I couldn't have left" At this point the look of understand passed over the mated pairs each knowing the pain of even thinking of leaving each other.
"Then why did we? What about Esme?" Alice interrupted not at all happy that the future was still blank to the outcome of this conversation.
"On her birthday she turned 18, and a few days before the party Bella came to me worried about what appeared to be a cancers cluster of moles growing on her back." He looked to Esme pleadingly
"Carlisle and I while we are married, we married out of love with the acceptance that one day we would find what you guys have" Esme said looking to Rose who stepped back into Emmett's arms.
"I took her to my office, Esme convinced me that I need to finally tell her. If these moles had indeed been cancerous, she would have been changed. I wouldn't put her through the months of uncertain treatment. Once she was changed, she would have realized. Once we got to my office and she showed them to me I knew what they were." Carlisle stood and walked to the painting that hung behind his desk of the Volturi and him. "The Volturi have been alive longer than many people know, they don't tell anyone their actual age. But their age reflects in their skin. You know the Volturi where family to me, they took me in, and they educated me Marcus was the one who helped me with resistance to the blood lust. I didn't know at the time, but I thought they were just taking care of me, I thought they wanted me on the guard. I told you guys I left because I didn't agree with them on a lot of things which it true, but it wasn't until Aro told me that they had been grooming me to not join the guard but to join the brothers as a ruler." Ignoring the gasps from the other Carlisle pushed on.
"I wanted to be a Doctor. So, I left, but before I went, I was sworn to secrecy the things they taught me. At the time the information seemed like common knowledge, to be told that I knew things it added a lot of stress. I came to the colonies to start schooling, and that's where I met Alistair. We became fast friends. Alistair and I bonded and like the Volturi he took me under his wings. One-night Alistair came to me while I was studying at the campus library, he told me it was time for him to leave but he needed me to go back to Volturi. I couldn't understand why he told me that I needed to ask the brothers why they never told me about the Family mark. I had no idea what he was talking about, but he made it very clear not to mention him when I asked. The information he had was dangerous." Carlisle sighed "I went back and asked Marcus. But he said that the mark was gifted to family and since I had declined my place was not family. Bella's moles on her back weren't cancerous they were the mark" Carlisle hung his head. "I reached out to Marcus the day of Bella's birthday, I told him I had a patient that I saw the mark on and just wanted to know what I should do. He advised they be sent to him. I told Edward that we needed to get Bella to Italy, but he explained to me that Bella no longer wanted anything to do with us and wanted us to leave. So, I told Marcus that I was wrong that the marks where cancer and he dropped it"
"She said that" Alice asked heart broken, Jasper hung his head in dread.
'That bitch" Rose snapped
"ENOUGH" Carlisle demanded "She has a right in how she chooses to live her life." Carlisle said "I know its hard guys believe me; it hurts to breathe sometimes"
"So, we can't go back to her? She doesn't want us?" Emmett asked devastated
"No, we can't she made her choice" Edward spoke for the first time.
"How can you go on without your mate?" Alice asked, "Carlisle what will happen to you?"
"I'm not sure, I've never heard of a mate going without the other, but I will do whatever it takes to make her happy." Carlisle stated
"How can she turn us away, and why did you never tell us about this." Rose demanded
"How could I tell you; you all had formed your own opinions of them, I didn't want you to think I would turn you into them. I tried to tell you once but then Jasper came, and I knew he would never be comfortable and see this has his home if he knew" Carlisle pleaded Jasper nodded his head in understanding. He remembered those early days the pain from thirst, the uncertainty from being surrounded by unknown vampires, and the paranoia accompanied by a new mate. He was ready to flee at the drop of a dime, or in his case a change of a mood.
"You lied to the Volturi, what if they come after us now?" Rose asked
"They won't, they won't bother us they hope one day I will come to them and take my place" Carlisle answered "I told you all this much because, I saw the way you all looked you want Bella back, but you can't" he took a unneeded deep breathe an for the first time ever looked his 300+ years. "And the longer I'm away from her the crazier I feel, I have been fighting with running back to her every minute, I think it may be best that I go back to Italy" Every head in the room turned to him
"You can't leave us"
"WHAT"
"Carlisle"
"Hush guys, they are the only ones that may know what to do, they won't hurt me they are gifted and strong enough to keep me away from her" Carlisle stated
"So that's it, I was right she tore our family apart" said Rose
"She did nothing wrong" She got the choose you always wanted Rose, to walk away" Esme spoke Rose looked defeated
"Let's call it a night" Carlisle said
"Edward why do you feel guilty?" Jasper asked on his way out of the room "It was her choose you can't blame yourself"
"Easier said than done Brother" Edward said with his head down he took off out the backdoor like he always did when anyone paid to much attention to him.
