Eden is smiling, laughing, eyes shining with mirth, pink flushing her cheeks slightly as if she's –

(Light is not the jealous type, has never been the jealous type, because he's never had to be the jealous type)

As if she's blushing.

Light knows it's the first times he's seen his girlfriend blush or be this carefree, this open, this human.

"You're very funny, Matsuda-san." His girlfriend says, covering her mouth with her hand.

Light doesn't agree. Touta Matsuda hasn't said anything remotely smart or funny in the last thirty minutes they've been seated in the coffee shop.

He'd wager that their fourth companion, the great and illustrious detective L, agrees, but for once the detective keeps his comments to himself, bobbing his head as he eats cake and watches the scene with smug amusement.

He probably enjoys Light's misery. He's not the only one, of course, his Shinigami shadow hovering over their table cackling whenever Eden's hand brushes Matsuda's shoulder.

Now, he'd understand if she was trying to make him jealous. He has been spending a lot of time with two other women and, even if not by choice, neglecting her.

But Eden doesn't care about that.

Which means that this, whatever this is, is genuine. She's happy and most likely unconsciously flirting with Touta Matsuda of all people. Touta Matsuda who is certainly not worthy of her or her intelligence or her looks and who, frankly, doesn't even come close to Light himself.

"Eden-chan and Matsuda-san seem to be getting along well." L has finally spoken, but not loud enough to disturb their other two companions who seem to be in a world of their own.

"They do." Light would never let his annoyance show. He smiles at the detective instead. "It's a good thing you and Matsuda-san happened to bump into us here."

If only looks could kill like notebooks can.

"Yes, a happy coincidence." Fake pleasantries, it is hardly fate that brought all of them here. Light sometimes wonders how long their game will last, not too long if he can get Misa and the detective in the same room for just a minute.

"I meant to ask earlier…" Light trails off, taking a sip of coffee. "Why you were here with Matsuda-san in the first place. Is it related to Kira?"

"Raito-kun is as perceptive as always." But the dark haired man doesn't add anything else and Light knows how to read between the lines – if it's related to Kira, then it's related to Light also.

Eden and Matsuda are comparing notes by now, showing each other pictures of their nieces and nephews.

Light is hardly one for what ifs, but he does have to wonder – if he had met Eden before he picked up the notebook, would he have felt the need to become Kira, would she have been enough to ward off the boredom, the ennui that had plagued him before –

(he'd asked her late one night, as she was dozing off on the couch, casually leaning into him and she'd answered, answered that they would never know because he never gave her the chance)

– could she fall in love with him.

"Raito-kun is smiling." Maybe he could. Maybe he could give her the chance to fall in love with him and at the same time take care of the annoying detective who is trying his patience.

Kill two birds with one stone, as the saying goes.

"How about some more drinks?" He asks then, almost cheerfully. It earns him grin from Matsuda, a raised eyebrow from his girlfriend and something like surprise on the detective's face.

Ryuk's the one who holds up his hand, excitedly asking about apples.
