~Ohne auf Wiedersehen zu sagen~
(Without saying Goodbye)
Friendship level: 10
Affection level: 10
Her back was killing her, if it wasn't excruciatingly so then she could've been making wise cracking jokes on why the woes of old age would have no effect on such a prestige Prinzessin such as herself.
Unfortunately for her, reality was often disappointing.
Now, she had become so bedridden, invalid, that even reaching out to the small table beside her for a glass of water to quench her thirst had been more or less a chore.
She remembered that just a year ago, she could still run around with so much zeal despite the warnings from the adventurer's guild that she should retire, heck only recently she could even put some of the few remaining hilichurls that existed to a fine crisp with a well placed electro charged arrow.
However she was forced to stay in bed for the time being after she was found unconscious at Brightcrown Mountain, reportedly she had been discovered by a fellow adventurer and witnessed her pass out from her excursion, it was said that her body couldn't even handle the strain of adventuring far anymore.
From then on, she was no longer allowed to do anything in the guild such as commissions or expeditions, and was immediately signed for retirement after that incident.
She was frail and weak yes, but that didn't mean she didn't have anymore fight in her.
Really, she lamented, how the mighty Prinzessin such as her have fallen from grace.
She grunted as she attempted to reach for the table again, but it was proven to be fruitless as she could barely move from where she lied, her arms couldn't even muster the strength anymore as even removing the sheets covering her had become a challenge.
"Wait, you don't need to force yourself, Amy."
A soft worried voice spoke from beside her.
Turning her head ever so slowly as even it had been a difficulty thing to do, her dulled green eyes met with golden orbs so bright, it still surprised her that it was vibrant and full of life, just like when she first saw them all those years ago.
The glow of the sunset illuminated his face, and revealed the worried expression of her beloved, who with a face so young he could even be mistaken as her son in law or nephew if strangers were to see them together.
Yet he's no relative of hers nor a caretaker either, he is her husband, partner, former guildmate, best friend and confidant.
Her prince.
"Oh...Hey there traveler."
The voice that came out of her sounded weak and guttural, it was a shame that it was no longer the smooth and haughty tone that she tried going for.
The blond traveler in question, who had sat beside her all this time, only blinked.
"...It's been years since you called me that, o great Prinzessin der Verurteilung." he chuckled, a wry smile on his face as he reached for the glass of water on the table.
He dragged the stool he sat on and came closer to her bedside, he then gently held her back as he pulled her to sit upright.
As he offered her the glass, she gingerly took it and started taking small sips.
When she was done, she shakily gave it to the awaiting palm of her beloved.
"So, how are you feeling? Do you need something else? Should I call Barbara to help you with something?" he asked in pure concern, taking a hold of her hand and brushed it with his own as he placed the glass back on the table.
She only cracked a smile at his affectionate gesture and string of worried inquiry.
"Oh, just the same old me, just fine and dandy." she replied, amused that he was making a fuss of her condition and well being once again.
But if she was going to be honest, she doesn't even know anymore, her condition hadn't improved in months despite the best healers and medicine they could get hold of, she had stayed in bed more often compared to a year ago when she could still fight and move around, her affliction was strange and she wasn't sure how much longer she had but at the moment, it didn't matter.
Silence washed over them as the traveler continued to hold her hand, both in a silent agreement that exchanging words ruin the now peaceful mood.
The tranquil of their small and humble home in Monsdadt, the cheapest that they could get despite the huge sum of mora they had, consisted of a small kitchen, a bathroom, three bedrooms, of which one for the both of them, and the now vacant ones for their children who had long left to start their own life.
It had established a relaxing mood amplified by the setting sun, it assured her that the same home that they shared a family with would remain even when nature's course decides to wash it away someday.
As the ambiance of the atmosphere soothed her and the traveler, She then touched his soft cheek, surprising the blond, but allowed her to once he saw her eyes filled with so much love and longing.
She gently glided her fingers across the smooth surface of his face, and as she did couldn't help but reminisce the incredible journey she had been through with him.
From the lonely girl who longed for companionship but was shunned for her love of fiction, to the adventurer with sharp wits and capabilities in battles coupled with the persona of a royal princess found in a story book, to being a part of saving the world from the cruel gods that ruled above, and then finally to becoming a wife, starting a family and subsequently giving birth to two beautiful children who now independently roamed the world with journeys of their own.
Of course, not everything had been all sunshine and rainbows, especially in her later years.
Oz had vanished after her electro vision started to fail during her sixties and never appeared again, due to her old age she just wasn't equipped to use it anymore so it started to not function properly, and with it her familiar had also suddenly ceased to exist on one sunny day, it was an anomaly as even then she could still use the electro element.
She felt grief for years on end when it happened, now she could only hold onto the sliver of memories she had of her cherished raven.
Thankfully, she had wonderful life long friends who never left her alone, it mitigated the impact of forever losing her first and loyal friend.
Bennett, who before had died at the early age of sixty due to a heart complication, even visited her often before his unfortunate demise to ensure her that she wouldn't feel alone, and even his now widowed wife Barbara, who she was still surprised was even capable of falling in love with how dedicated she was to the Archon of Freedom, also visited often to sing for her in order to cheer her up and still comes over to this day.
There were a lot more who visited her throughout her senior years, the ones she could manage to recall were the retired acting grand master and even the still youthful woman who loved bombs since childhood, but honestly she couldn't even remember the others with how her memory was also starting to decline, but she was grateful that she had such loyal comrades in her time of need even if she couldn't picture their faces anymore.
One thing is for certain and a constant in her life, her beloved traveler- no, Aether, had been with her, through thick and thin, through every loving moment to their intense arguments during their married years together, to the adventures that risked both of their lives and even their relationship, he was there and never once had left her by herself.
Just like now where she was slowly reaching her final moments, he'd never left her.
She continued caressing his face before settling below his chin, and seeing his ever eternal youthfulness while the hand that held it were wrinkly and dried only brought a great sense of disappointment within her that she wasn't the same, nonetheless she is happy that he was still by her side.
He could've just left her decades ago and resumed his world hopping adventures after he was done resolving everything he could in this world, yet he decided to settle down with her despite knowing the fact that he'll outlive her eventually, married her and started a family together, he even has more ahead to his life journey than to be in one place with a simple mortal with a obsession to fantasy like her.
Still, she was forever grateful that the otherworldly traveler had finally given her the opportunity to become what made her who she was today, the love and affection she had received and longed for years, gave her a family she didn't know she wanted and so much more.
And that the lonely girl like her who immersed herself in the ideal fantasy she created wasn't lonely after all.
In the end, she wouldn't mind if he'd let her go, she loved him too much for him to be stuck in the past, he could even remarry or love someone who could be with him much longer than she ever could, he deserved it.
The story of Amy, recently turned the age of 80, also known as Fischl von Luftschloss Narfidort, the Prinzessin der Verurteilung, Sovereign of Immernachtreich and Ruler of the Ashen Darkness, who became a legend amongst the adventurers guild and one of the saviours of the world, had now reached the final pages of her story.
It was about time that Aether, The Outlander Who Caught the Wind, the saviour who truly prevented the world from plunging into ruin, the otherworldly traveler, would continue the next saga of his ongoing story and eternal life.
And as her now twinkling green eyes felt heavy without her realizing and her breathing coming to a steady pace before slowing down, the panicked expression of her beloved as he desperately called out her name pained her, she wanted him to be happy so seeing him stricken with grief immensely saddened her.
So all she could do was give him a contented smile as she focused her dimming vision on his beautiful face and eyes one last time, before the encroaching darkness of nothingness enveloped her whole.
Thank you and I love you with all my heart, my dear traveler.
"I appear to have now regained most of the strength I lost in my transition to this world. Mwuhahaha, the day of judgment is nigh! ...Ah, worry not. Even at the last, when I bring the lightning of retribution upon this world, you shall come to no harm, for thou art blessed by the Prinzessin."
"You seem... troubled. Traveler, Do not lose heart! For with my left eye, the Auge der Verurteilung, which sees the threads of fate, I will surely keep you from harm. And Oz, the raven that has witnessed the demise of countless worlds, will watch over you on your journey. Should this world, like a beast prowling in the night, covet your dreams, then I, Prinzessin der Verurteilung, shall fell it with my ensorcelled arrows of judgment!"
"Why must the Prinzessin der Verurteilung punish sin? Because sin defies fate's rightful decree, of course! ...And of course, fate brought you here, so, so... Ahem! It was fate that saw to your descent upon this world, destiny that saw our paths intertwined. I, Fischl, shall always protect you. Because... because fate has revealed to me that this is what has been decreed!"
"You and I are both travelers from another world. That our paths have crossed here is no accident, but the will of fate."
