A/N: Hey guys! So this is very much a different vibe for me as it's my first dip into the Avengers fandom because this idea would not leave me alone. The fic is mostly complete, I'm just running through the editing process so I'll be posting regularly until its all up. Please be gentle with me lol.

A Chance to Make Anew.

James "Bucky" Barnes wondered what his life had come to when he found himself once again hiding out in a teenager's lab to get away from his so called best friend and his sycophant followers. It had been almost a year since the whole Civil War incident and Bucky found himself more and more disillusioned with what Steve had become, and that didn't touch on the people Steve swore were all family. Bucky had gone back into Cryo as soon as they touched down in Wakanda, his head was a mess and he honestly didn't know what was going on around him only that he was a danger and he couldn't stand it anymore.

He was woken up months later by an over-excited Princess who was chattering about borrowed technology and impressive out-of-the-box thinking as well as a bunch of techno babble that went way over Bucky's head. The gist of it was that someone had lent the Princess technology to clear Bucky of his triggers and had also crafted him a new arm, and it didn't take Bucky long to find out just who was responsible for his newly healed state.

Tony Stark.

Someone that Bucky had done nothing but harm and yet, somehow, this man, who if you listened to Steve and his team was the literal Devil, found it in himself to not only clear his head but give him a new arm. Of course, he wasn't supposed to know it was Stark that had helped him, and he wasn't stupid enough to breathe a word of who was responsible for his recovery around Steve and his cohorts. Bucky had found himself disgusted at the lot of them, especially Steve and the Hydra witch.

It was only once his brain was fixed did he recognise her, and Bucky admitted he was a bit impulsive by trying to outright kill her as soon as he saw her but he felt he was justified even if it convinced them all that he was still unreliable and unstable. It was for that reason he didn't even try to correct their horrendous oversight about the truth of what happened in Siberia; it seemed Stark wasn't the only person Steve lied to when it suited him these days. Listening to the group go on and on about how Stark was responsible for everything that was wrong in their lives and everything else in the world got old quickly.

From what Bucky was able to work out, during his time in Cryo Stark was also missing from the public eye and the aforementioned "Team Cap" had believed everything surrounding the Accords (another thing they liked to rant about) would all be brushed away and they'd be welcomed back like the heroes they believed they were. How they thought that was possible considering the amount of laws they all broke Bucky still didn't understand but there was only so many times he could listen to the utter shit that came out of their mouths before he started considering Cryo once again.

Unfortunately for Team Cap, Tony Stark exploded back onto the scene and when he did he did it with a bang. Seemingly single-handedly he revised the Accords and rebuilt the Avengers to the cheers of the rest of the world and Team Cap hated it. The Witch liked to screech about how a murderer such as Stark should be the one in exile unlike her completely innocent self, conveniently ignoring that she joined a Nazi terror group and tortured people to death routinely when she was with them. Barton was only too happy to jump on her bandwagon, while Natalia would scoff and state that Stark was never approved to be an Avenger in the first place.

Bucky was in two minds when it came to his stay in the Red Room and what he had taught those little girls, but the part that usually won out was how very disappointed with how far Natalia had fallen from standard. She had bought into her own legend and for all she went on and on about Stark's ego it was hers that was out of control. Steve was convinced as soon as the shine of Stark's performance wore off then the world would realise what a mistake was making with Wilson playing the loyal dog and agreeing with everything he said. Lang had, at first, been of the same mind, until his girlfriend, Hope Van Dyne, had gone on live television publicly siding with Tony and decrying Lang as a traitor and a thief. Since then the man hadn't been seen much, not that Bucky blamed him of course, that was a hell of a way to be dumped.

Bucky had spent most of his time hiding from the lot of them. If it wasn't rants on Stark, Bucky was subjected to Steve trying to relive the so-called glory days, with the side notes on how Bucky was supposed to act and live now he was fixed. It was as if Steve believed without the triggers in his brain the whole 70 years of torture acting as a wind up murder doll for Hydra hadn't happened. Trying to explain that no he wasn't the same guy he was back in the 40's was like trying to talk to a brick wall, Steve just wasn't willing to hear his words and since Bucky tried to murder the Witch it just made the obnoxious blond believe that he wasn't fully fixed. Probably didn't help that he often slipped in to Russian when frustrated; something he often was around them all.

Bucky gave up attempting to reason with the man, not only was he seeing a whole side of Steve that he kind of hated, but it gave him an excuse to stay away from the group as he "recovered". Shuri was more than willing to let Bucky take up space in her lab as she hated the Rogues, another name they were called that Bucky thought was funny if only for the expression it put on Steve's face, with a burning passion. Bucky took amusement where he could these days and found her rants about them and her brother's idiotic decision to grant them sanctuary endlessly funny. But his hiding was how he found out that it was Tony Stark that fixed him up, and it was how he was able to reach out to Stark and apologise even if it would never be close to what the man deserved; Bucky had nothing else to give.

He, unlike Steve, was well aware that Stark could have reduced them both to smears on the ground back in that bunker; there was a reason Hydra has a do-not-engage/kill on sight order on the Engineer even before Iron Man came on to the scene. He never expected a response from the engineer so he was very surprised when he got one, and even more that they became tentative friends over email; he thought that his complete agreement that Steve's actions were utterly repugnant helped. Stark, or Tony as he insisted being called, had mentioned something about an agreement being put into place to bring the Rogues back to the US and grant Bucky himself a full pardon.

He honestly couldn't wait to have some space from Team Cap, they had been particularly bad recently due to the arrival of Thor, his crazy brother Loki and the return of Bruce Banner. Loki being granted a pardon and a place on the New Avengers when it came out that he hadn't been in control during the New York Invasion had not gone over well. Which is why Bucky was back in the Princess' lab ruminating over how his life had come to such a point. He did enjoy spending time with the young genius; she was bright, lively, and all too willing to get him up-to-date on the modern world. He had learned loads just by being around her; Hydra hadn't exactly made it a priority to educate him about the development of Pride or the number of genders accepted these days.

Bucky was letting her vent, a slight smile on his face at her enthusiasm, Shuri had heard about the agreement being discussed to bring the Rogues in too, and she was only too happy to tell him all about how excited she was for it to happen so Bucky was happy to let her continue until;

"Sugar Babies?" He repeated, an eyebrow raised in confusion and Shuri paused before flashing a grin.

"People who do nothing but have a rich person buy them things while they sit and look pretty." She explained and Bucky made a sound of understanding.

"We had those back in the 40's; pretty women would marry rich men and spend their days staying pretty for 'em." Bucky mused, "I can't believe that has a name now-a-days."

"People make a living doing nothing but that without the marriage part."

"Seriously?" Bucky questioned in disbelief, "you can do that? I've been missing out!"

"You want to do that?" Shuri scoffed and Bucky pouted.

"I can be pretty."

The Princess looked at him before bursting out laughing making Bucky slouch back and cross his arms which only served to make Shuri outright cackle.

"Laugh it up; lotsa people use'ta like lookin' at his mug." He grumbled and the Princess snorted.

"You'd get bored, White Wolf."

Bucky scoffed.

"Layin' around as somebody indulges me sounds exactly like somethin' I can get behind."

Shuri looked at him for a second before nodding her head with a shrug.

"That makes sense."

Bucky spent the rest of his time hiding out imaging being able to lay back and have someone else dote on him while baffling at some of the things the modern world. It was a nice dream, he thought, but he knew that it would never happen. Not only was he the Winter Solider but he had plans on using the skills Hydra had forced on him to do good for the world. It was fun to imagine, but Bucky had long since known that reality would never measure up. He shook of that depressing thought and focussed back on the Princess; things weren't so bad over all.

Bucky found himself wondering for the 6th time in half as many hours if pitching himself out of the jet taking them back to the US would be considered suicide or a rescue attempt as he held himself back from murdering the rest of Team Cap. If it wasn't spitting in the face of Tony's efforts to secure his full pardon with the condition of his good behaviour then Bucky thought he would have snapped and killed the lot of them. Well, except Lang, who looked utterly terrified to be returning but then that could have something to do with the very threatening Hope Van Dyne and very pissed off Hank Pym waiting for his arrival. He was silent as the grave and Bucky was thankful.

The rest of them however: they were loud, belligerent and plain stupid, not seemingly able to grasp that they had not been granted a pardon and things were not going to go back to "how it should be". The unimpressed expressions on the Dora Milje were a soothing balm to Bucky's soul and he spent the trip pretending to meditate, not bothering to correct Steve's uninformed explanation that he was worried about facing Tony after "Stark turned on us and tried to kill them". He wasn't touching that delusion with a ten foot pole. Even if he hadn't been speaking to Tony for months, he wouldn't be worried about facing the man anyway – he'd either kill him or let him live and he'd faced worse things than death repeatedly for 70 years. Fear didn't really have a place in Bucky's life anymore.

When they finally landed his sigh of relief was covered by the surge of movement and he pulled himself up, nodding to the Dora offering a Wakandan salute in goodbye and got one in return before slinking down the ramp of the fancy Wakandan jet. It didn't matter how much effort he put into it, Bucky moved as if he was about to do damage and he had given up caring about that fact, he had been the Winter Solider for longer than he was ever Bucky Barnes and everything about him reflected that much to Steve's displeasure. He wasn't going to change everything he had clawed his way back to just to please Steve's self-righteous ass. They were outside the New Avengers compound and Captain Danvers, Colonel Rhodes and Tony Stark were waiting to greet them.

It was like a sucker punch to the gut. He had seen Tony on tv, online, on social media and everywhere in between but nothing could have prepared him for how physically attractive Tony Stark was in person. Stood in a blood red suit that looked like it was painted on his body and looked as if it cost the same amount as a car, Tony stood in a relaxed position that clearly indicated he knew exactly how powerful he was and that he was doing them a favour for merely being there. Bucky had seen many people in Hydra try to project that image, usually missing by a mile and coming across arrogant and domineering, and while in Wakanda it was more grace and humble elegance.

Stark drew all attention to himself without even trying with his perfectly styled hair and goatee, matching red sunglasses and an expression that indicated he'd rather be anywhere else; Bucky cursed his recently returned libido as it flared almost painfully at the complete image; god he wanted. He was so distracted from trying to make sure he didn't do anything embarrassing that he didn't even realise that the Captain had been talking until there was outcry from the Rogues and the Witch's powers started pooling around her hands. He moved without thinking; one of the knives Shuri had crafted him was in his hand and pressed against her misleadingly delicate throat before anyone else could move.

"Кто быстрее, Ведьма?" (Who's faster, Witch?) He all but crooned at her, eyeing her like the disgusting wretch she was. Her power died away instantly, eyes wide with fright as she knew full well that from this position he'd win without question.

"Bucky, no!" Steve yelled, rushing over to pull him away from the Witch. "We've talked about this! You can't get mad at Wanda for using her powers, she's just a kid."

Bucky couldn't have stopped his eyeroll even if he tried, slipping away from Steve before the blond could touch him and sneered.

"Yeah, the Hydra Witch is a real wiltin' flower; my mistake." His voice dripping in sarcasm as he settled away from Rogues, who huddled round the Witch like she didn't have the power to shred their minds to pieces at will. There was a bark of laughter from his left and Bucky turned to see Stark regarding him over the top of his sunglasses, an amused smirk playing around his very kissable lips.

"Are you being naughty, Solda't?" Stark all but purred and Bucky fought not to visibly shiver as he felt his voice wash over him like honey. Instead, he raised his chin and let a slow smirk curl on to his face.

"Depends on who's askin'?"

Stark's eyes dragged over the length of Bucky's body unashamedly before a rather wolfish expression flicked over his face and he hummed a low "is that so?" that was almost too quiet for Bucky to catch. Tony flashed a smirk as he pushed his glasses back up and then beckoned him forward.

"You're with me, Winter Wonder, as you have a full pardon you don't have any restrictions so I'll be showing you around." Tony informed him, his attention on Bucky alone, "my Sour Patch and Cap Marvellous have the rabble."

Bucky was more than okay with that but before he could take a single step Steve was there yet again but this time he grabbed Bucky's shoulder to stop him moving and levelled a glare at Stark.

"Bucky's not going anywhere with you, Stark!" Steve growled, "and you can stop this nonsense about our place here; we've been brought back – we're Avengers!"

"Yeah, Stark, get over yourself already. You lost. You owe us." Barton sneered, looking pleased with himself.

Tony raised an eyebrow at them before turning his head slightly as if looking at a baffling zoo exhibit that he couldn't wrap his head around. He stayed like that for a long moment and just as Barton was opening his mouth to continue sprouting crap Tony gained a look of dawning comprehension that couldn't have been more fake to Bucky's eyes if he tried.

"Ah I see where the mix-up is, I apologise." He began, pulling off his sunglasses to regard them seriously with his whiskey brown eyes. He paused long enough for the Rogues to start to look pleased with themselves before continuing;

"You are under the mistaken belief that I give a fuck about what you think."

A rather vicious grin stretched over Stark's face as he regarded the Rogues, and Bucky couldn't help but note with pleasure that he was very clearly not included with the rest of them.

"I am pleased to inform you that that is not the case. If you have any problems with your situation, do inform FRIDAY who can tell me at a later date where I can, what was it? Oh yeah, still not give a fuck."

"Tony-," Romanoff began only for Stark to cut her off instantly.

"You are here for the sole purpose of making sure that you do not fuck up any and all plans that are being made in preparation to what is coming; the threat I have previously warned you all about and you ignored. No one wants you here, but we, unlike you, are willing to compromise for the sake of civilians and saving lives." Tony stated coldly, expression biting as he looked them over. "You here because you have nowhere else to go and if you fuck up the New Avengers are more than equipped to take you out without danger to any innocent people getting in the crossfire. You don't have a say in this; you do what you are told or you go the fuck to prison and believe me no one will be protesting that outcome."

Stark looked away, dismissing the Rogues with a scoff, and turned to the Colonel and the Captain with a raised eyebrow.

"We got this, Tones." Rhodes assured and Tony nodded, turning to walk back to the compound.

"Следуй за мной, солдат." (Follow me, Solider)

Bucky hadn't even realised he had stopped breathing as he watched Tony verbally cut down the Rogues until the sound of Russian in that honey voice caused him to exhale harshly. He shook off Roger's hand and followed after Stark before he'd even consciously thought about it, and he had to bite his lip to stop any sound leaving his mouth as he watched Tony's glorious ass move in those pants. Tony moved with the confidence of someone who knew he was the most powerful person in the room and he wore his power and his wealth without hesitation or reluctance and Bucky wanted him.

It probably said a lot about him as a person for wanted to fuck someone he had screwed over so many times before, but Bucky was all out of fucks to give at this point in his life. They were already friends, but meeting Tony Stark in person was like nothing Bucky could have prepared for. It wasn't just his physical attributes, but goddamn, or that he wore his power and wealth like it was his due, it was all of it combines mixed in with the air of danger that had Bucky's Winter Solider senses screaming that the man in front of him was a predator. He couldn't remember if that was the case the last time they met, the circumstances and his brain to messed up for him to pick out little individual details like that, but now it was in the forefront of his mind he Bucky couldn't not notice.

He listened as Tony listed off what was available to him in the compound, bright and bubbly in a way he wasn't in front of the Rogues, finding himself more impressed than he expected when he was shown the Gym and training facilities. Tony introduced Friday first, her lilting Irish voice greeting him sunnily from the speakers in the walls, and to the New Avengers that they saw on the tour and Bucky was surprised to find himself greeted cheerfully and welcomed by most of them; a few were understandably weary but not in horrible way; it was refreshing.

"Now, Buckaroo, you get the honour of being housed with the rest of the cool kids in the East wing. Don't bring in anyone who isn't authorised as it's a secure wing for a reason." Tony warned, coming to a door that didn't have any visible access points. It slid open silently telling Bucky that it was controlled by Friday, who seemed to run most of the compound from what Bucky could understand. He immediately recognised that this wing was much more homely, the common room was littered with little bits of clutter, knitted throws and kids toys and there were two teenagers arguing on the sofa as they played on a console of some sort connected to the truly massive tv.

"Boys weren't you supposed to be finishing your homework?" Tony asked amused and the pair of them jumped, turning to look at the Iron Man pilot with wide eyes; eyes that got bigger when they spotted him next to Tony.

"Oh my God is that the arm?" The teen with the floppy sandy blond hair exclaimed, eyes immediately fixating on the metal arm Bucky was sporting. While the one with huge bambi eyes, dark hair and a baby face said;

"Mr Winter Solider sir, you're finally here!"

Quicker than Bucky anticipated he has two teenagers right in front of him; the one who had brought up his arm grabbed it, lifting it up to examine it closely clearly having zero fear of who it was attached too, while the other teen looked like he had a million questions waiting to burst forth.

"Tesla give me strength, Davidson, you can't just grab someone's prosthetic." Tony huffed sounding severe but looking endlessly fond even as he slapped the teens hands off of Bucky. "Underoos take a breath, he's going to be living here now, I'm sure you'll have plenty of time to ask him all your questions."

Tony shot Bucky a somewhat apologetic grin as they grumbled as took a step back and Bucky was helpless not to smile back slightly.

"Snowflake, the feral child that grabbed your arm is Harley." Tony introduced, ruffling said teen's hair much to his displeasure. "Any the one who looked like he was about to verbally vomit all over you is Peter."

"Kidlets; Sergeant Bucky Barnes."

"Sup Barnes."

"Hi Mr Sergeant Barnes Sir. Your metal arm is very cool."

"Hey," Bucky replied; he looked at the baby faced teen for a second, something about his voice was familiar. "You're Spider-Man."

The teen made a hilarious squeaking sound that would have gave him away if Bucky had any previous doubts, and next to him Tony snorted.

"I told you he'd get it."

Bucky sort of gaped at the kid a bit.

"I got my ass kicked by a foetus."

Stark and Harley laughed at that while Peter pouted at him, making himself look even younger than he already did.

"I'm almost seventeen." He complained.

"It's the baby face and the bambi eyes, bambino." Tony told him, "You're gonna look like that until you have facial hair sorry."

"Ugh."

"Now, you two, homework. Go! I know you haven't finished it, Jarvis would have told me."

"Indeed they have not, sir. I'm afraid Master Harley used his favour to have access to the tv." A British voice said from the walls, sounding a tad uppity.

"Oh my God Jarvis you're such a tattle tale." Harley complained, slinking off down the corridor no doubt to finish his homework somewhere else with Peter dogging his heels.

"I apologise in advance for those two; they won't leave you alone now that you are here."

"I've lived with a teen who acts like she's on a constant sugar high; it'll be fine."

"Famous last words." Tony said to him amused. "Now, J, introduce yourself to Bucky-Bear."

"Good afternoon, Sergeant Barnes. My name is Jarvis and I am Sir's personal AI, my presence is a secret to only those inside this wing."

"Good t' meet ya Jarvis; no one will learn about you from me." Bucky replied seriously.

"I do hope that is the case." Jarvis warned ominously.

"Okay, so that's enough of Jarvis' overprotective tendencies." Tony cut in, shooting a look to where one of the cameras was hidden.

"Why is he a secret and Friday isn't?" Bucky asked as Tony led him further into the wing past a large communal kitchen/diner.

"They think that Jarvis was destroyed during the Ultron incident and after they turned on me and believed I created Ultron despite me being cleared of any wrong doing, I decided not to tell them I was working on fixing Jarvis back up." Tony explained, a look of distaste on his face. "They had already met Friday and tried to order me to put restrictions on her or even destroy her, not that I did, like hell am I about to tell them Jarvis is back too."

"They had no right; just because Friday doesn't have a body doesn't make her less." Bucky said in disgust and Tony shot him a look he couldn't quite read before it faded into a beaming smile. Bucky had to swallow harshly; that smile was dangerous. They finally rounded off the tour with Tony telling him whose room belonged to who before throwing open an unclaimed door and ushing Bucky in.

"And this is your room." Tony announced and Bucky was speechless. It was pained in an array of beautifully blended colours that somehow gave Bucky the impression of a forest without it being overwhelming. The carpet was so soft that he could feel it through his boots and the bed was a huge sprawling monstrosity that Bucky wanted to face plant as soon as possible. The floor to ceiling windows that were giving Bucky a bit of anxiety at being so exposed Tony revealed were actually hologram projections onto a solid wall with windows high up to let in natural light. There was an indent in one of the walls that revealed itself to be a walk in closest that had a few things already in there "just to get him by for now" and the other door revealed a stunning black marble and chrome bathroom with a huge walk in shower and a large tub set in the ground that Bucky planned to spend hours in later. Tony pointed out the toiletries and the array of bubble baths in cleverly hidden storage cubbys that could be revealed at a touch.

"I love it." Bucky breathed, slightly overwhelmed with a feeling he couldn't quite explain but it say warm in his stomach at he took in the space so obviously designed with him in mind.

"I knew you would." Tony agreed, pleased as punch and cocky at the same time. He showed Bucky the Starkphone, tablet and laptop that had been set up for him and quickly ran through how to work the tv that Bucky hadn't even realised was a tv until the wall directly opposite the his bed rippled.

"All the New Avengers numbers are in the phone and if you are confused or need anything Friday and Jarvis are available to help at any time." Tony told him.

"Honestly Tony, this is incredible; thank you."

"It's nothing, Snowflake." Tony waved him off but there was a light flush touching his cheeks; something Bucky wanted to see more of. "I'll let you get settled; no one will come in without your permission, Jarvis and Friday won't allow it; so feel free to do whatever you want."

"I'll see you later?" Bucky questioned as Tony made to leave and the engineer flashed him a grin.

"Couldn't keep me away, Winter Wonder."

And then he was gone, depriving Bucky of his presence much to the former assassin's displeasure. He looked around his room in disbelief, not believing that this would be where he would be living from now on. His room in Wakanda was lovely, of course, but it was a generic guest space whereas this was very clearly for him. Bucky finally gave in to the urge to face plant the bed, groaning in utter delight as he was enveloped by what felt like a magical cloud. He figured it wouldn't harm anyone if he had a nap before dealing with the rest of the day, his brain was a whirlwind of sensations right now and no doubt as soon as he crossed paths with the Rogues again he would have to deal with their crap on top of his own.

"Friday?"

"Yes Sergeant Barnes?"

"Can you wake me up in an hour?"

"Of course; would you prefer a sound alert or for me to gently raise the lights until you are awake?"

"The lights please, Friday. Sounds make me jumpy when I'm not expecting them."

"I'll be sure to remember that for the future, Sergeant." She told him brightly before blacking out his windows and hologram wall and leaving him to his nap. Bucky had one final thought that he would love living at the compound before the day caught up with him and he was out like a light.
