Bella laid back against the pillows, placing the phone against her chest as she stared up at the ceiling. As she awaited Edward's response to her message, she thought over the last couple of weeks. Since their date, in March, her and Edward's relationship had changed dramatically.
They talked daily, either on the phone or through periodic text messages throughout the day. Most were talking of the next time they would see one another, while others pertained to time already shared. Still, they were unsure where all this was leading, but one thing Bella knew for sure was how much she fucking missed him when he wasn't there.
Moments ago, she texted, saying, It's Thursday, and tomorrow is Good Friday. I could always jump in the car and come down for the weekend."
Now her belly pinched as she awaited his response. She already had a feeling where this convo was headed, considering he'd already expressed how busy he'd been. Yet disappointment knifed through her as the phone beeped with his returning message, knowing without looking it was a decline of her offer. Even still, she lifted the cell and spied the message.
Edward: Belle, u know I wld b down for that, but shit is so hectic here at the moment. There's no way I cld break away. Hopefully, next wknd … Hell, who knows.
Belle: Ok. Well, it's almost 11 here, and I'm beat, so I'm going to head to bed. I do miss u tho. Can't wait to c u whenever that might be.
In frustration, Bella crawled in bed and punched her pillow. If she weren't so exhausted from a tiresome week at work, she definitely would retrieve the vibrator from her nightstand and cure the ache throbbing to life as she thought of the handsome man on the other end of the line.
As the idea persisted, she rolled toward her night table, fully intending to retrieve the toy, shooting Edward a text at that same time.
Bella: Wanna have phone sex?
Edward: if I weren't in my office, I would be so down for that.
Bella: You are the one who likes all that PDA. Thought you'd be down for a little action in ur office.
Edward: If my assistant and intern weren't in here, Belle, I'd be all over it. The beast is hungry … Unfortunately, however …
Bella: Party pooper. You are the only one I've ever known to write, however, in a text. I guess I will let you get back to work and forget about the fun tonight:(
Edward: I miss you too, babe. Get some rest and call me tomorrow.
Edward leaned forward to speak into the phone as he drove I-69N at nearly eighty miles per hour to reach Fort Wayne. He was tempted to give away his surprise visit, Bella's disappointment evident with each text, and he hated the feeling of the separation from her. Biting his lip, however, Edward forced himself to remain silent on the issue, his foot pressing harder on the gas with each mile.
Bella: Goodnight, sexy.
Edward: Sleep tight, Belle.
Thirty minutes later, Edward turned off the highway onto the exit ramp hitting West Jefferson, going nearly fifty in his hurry to arrive at Bella's house. Just as he would've switched lanes, the flashing blue and red lights in his window alerted him to the presence of a squad car on his tail. With a huff of breath and a roll of his eyes, he slowed down, moving to the side of the road.
Luckily, being nearly midnight, not much traffic dotted the road, and quickly, Edward maneuvered the BMW until he braked and threw the car in park. As he watched the officer climb from his patrol car, Edward shuffled through his center console to retrieve his registration and insurance. As soon as his window slid down and the cop appeared next to his car, Edward offered the documents without being asked.
"Do you have any idea how fast you were going?" The officer asked, taking in Edward's appearance and looking around the inside of his car.
"No, not really. I was just in a bit of a hurry," Edward shrugged. "I was just anxious to get home and spend time with family for the holidays."
"Ahhh," the officer said as he studied the driver's license and registration. "Just sit tight, and I will be back in a minute."
For the next fifteen minutes, Edward sat in his car, impatiently drumming his fingertips on the steering wheel. As he waited, he grabbed his cell and pulled up Alice. Noting the time, Edward knew he would be lucky if she were up, yet he tried anyway.
"Hello?" Alice's gruff voice answered after the fifth ring. "Edward, why are you calling so late? Is everything ok?"
"I need you to go down and unlock the door." Edward looked out the rearview mirror to see the cop pushing out of the driver seat. "I just pulled off the exit ramp into Fort Wayne, and I should be at your house in about fifteen minutes or so."
"Bella never mentioned you were coming up for the weekend," Alice groaned, climbing out from beneath the covers. "I figured she would be up waiting for you."
"Actually, Alice, I was just pulled over, and the officer is headed in this direction now. Don't wake Bella; I was kind of hoping to surprise her." Edward rolled the window down as the officer came back with his information and a citation in hand. "I have to go, but I will see you in a few minutes."
"No, you won't cause my ass is going back to bed," Alice grumbled as she unlocked the back door. "The doors open … just be quiet. Everyone is sleeping."
Edward didn't listen to the rest of what Alice had to say, ending the call as the officer stopped next to the door. "I clocked you going almost fifty in a thirty-five. Normally, I would write you a ticket but I will let you off with a warning. You really need to slow down, could've slid right off that ramp."
