"How are you feeling?" Edward wanted to know, plopping down next to Bella on the couch. Her hair was a haphazard mess, and her complexion was slightly paler than he was typically used to seeing her. Concern etched his handsome face as he pulled her against his chest. "You spent most of the morning in the bathroom. Is your stomach still upset?"
Bella's lips and throat were dry from hurling breakfast six ways from Sunday, yet she tiredly rested her head against Edward's shoulder. "I don't know. I still feel kind of queasy. Can you grab the blanket from the chair?"
Edward's gaze coasted around the living space, spying the tan throw strewn across the back. Pressing a kiss to her forehead, he pulled away long enough to retrieve the requested blanket. Tucking it around Bella's trim form, he settled back into the cushion next to her. "There you go, Belle," he whispered, pulling her back against him. "Sure, I can't get you something to eat or drink? I'm fairly sure you didn't even digest a bite of breakfast."
"Oh, no," she whimpered as her stomach pitched at the mention of food. "I think if we even talk about …"
Before Bella could finish the word food, her stomach flopped, and she leaped from the couch. She didn't even hesitate as she raced for the bathroom, dropping to her knees in front of the toilet. There she rested for the next twenty minutes as she fought and lost waves of nausea.
Edward only waited half a second before he followed Bella. Worry filled him as he pulled her hair back from her face, his long fingers petting across her cheeks. Once she climbed shakily to her feet, he walked her back towards the couch and tucked the blanket around her legs. His gaze roamed her tired features as he pushed a long chestnut strand off her brow. "Baby, why don't you let me take you back to bed? We can put a movie on and just rest for the day."
"Okay," Bella agreed. Yet before she could climb onto her wobbly legs, Edward surprised her, easily lifting her in his arms as he turned for the stairs.
"Sex again already?" Alice questioned as she came through the front door. "Y'all do realize it's Easter, and we should be going to Dad's for dinner, right? Plus, I think the cops might be called if the noise upstairs continues. Someone might think you're killing her."
A smirk tipped Edward's lips as he glanced with annoyance at Alice. "No, not sex, Alice. Belle doesn't feel good, and I'm taking us both up to bed. You can tell Mom and Dad I said hello, and I love them. I'll see them for Memorial Day or something."
"Oh, baby," Alice whispered, coming across the living room to brush the hair from Bella's cheeks. Placing her fingers over her forehead, Alice checked her temperature. "You don't feel warm. But I guess it doesn't mean anything. How about I get you some crackers to soak up the acid in your stomach."
Bella's head rested against Edward's shoulder, her lashes sleepily fluttering as she regarded her best friend. "Maybe. And could you get me a glass of water, please? I just wanna lay in bed for a while."
"Most definitely," Alice smiled, tossing her brother a pleasing lift of her brows. She'd never seen Edward so attentive to anyone before, and this small display of affection tugged at a special spot in her heart. Patting his arm, she nodded, "Take her to bed, and I will be up in a minute."
As Edward turned for the stairs, he heard a hiss and growl and a frantic yelp from his sister as he quickly made his way to Bella's bedroom. Laying her across the bed, he turned to grab the remote, his thick brow lifting as he studied her. "What do you wanna watch, princess?"
"I don't know," Bella grumbled as she snuggled into the pillows. "I want my cat. Will you get him for me before he mauls Alice alive in the kitchen. He still hates her."
"I think the little fucker hates everyone," Edward muttered, wondering how the hell he was going to wrangle the demon from hell. Ever since he'd given Bella Shercon for Christmas, the animal seemed to have a personal vendetta against him. "Anything else, babe?"
Bella considered him for a long quiet minute. "Can you get me some plain vanilla ice cream?"
Edward started for the door with a list of what to grab when he stopped. "Babe, I don't think there is any ice cream."
"Oh," Bella pouted with puckered lips. "Never mind. I will just eat some crackers when Alice brings them up."
Edward bit the inside of his cheek as this insane desire to please coursed through him. He wasn't entirely sure where this need came from or where it was headed, but all he knew is, if he had to drive all the way to Indy to get the ice cream she requested, he would lead foot it all the way there and back. "Babe, I'll run to the gas station." Coming back into the room, he dropped a kiss to her forehead. "I'll be right back."
"Okay," she smiled, snuggling into her bed. "Sweetie? Can you bring Shercon up before you go? I can't sleep without him."
Three scratches later and several curses following, Edward delivered the demonic animal to Bella's outstretched arms. The cat hissed as he leaped away as if a firecracker went off straight into her arms, his large yellow eyes glaring into Edward's soul.
Edward was halfway down the stairs when he encountered Alice, groaning aloud when he noticed the twinkle in her eyes. "Don't even start, Alice."
"What? I think it's cute how different you are with Bella. She's good for you, Edward. And you are so sweet with her," Alice noted. When she spied the fear start to hone in on her brother's easygoing mood, she decided to downplay her enthusiasm a smidge. "Where are you headed anyway?"
"Bella said she wanted some vanilla ice cream, and there isn't any in the freezer. So, I'm headed to the gas station," Edward relayed, eager to get away from Alice's meddling. Yeah, Bella might be her best friend, but what happened between him and the woman upstairs was still between them. Currently, everything was just too new for her to be getting any ideas, and the less he shared with his sister, the better. "Need anything while I'm out?"
"No," Alice stated with a shake of her head. "But thanks."
Edward came back in record time, jogging up to Bella's room. To his surprise, the color was back in her face, and she was propped against the pillows with Shercon glaring at him from the center of her lap. Relief flooded him as he came into the room and sat on the edge of her bed. "You look a lot better than a whole ten minutes ago."
"Yeah," Bella agreed, reaching for the ice cream. Her brow wrinkled as she contemplated the swift change in her body. "I could've sworn I would be out of commission for the rest of the day. I've never felt so horrible. Anyway, I still have a little bit of a headache, but besides that, I feel better. Did you happen to grab a spoon, babe?"
The corner of Edward's mouth lifted as he watched her eagerly tear the wrap from the top of the carton. "Actually, I kind of forgot the spoon. Be right back."
"Thanks," Bella mumbled as she tore the lid from the top. Suddenly, she couldn't resist the need for the sweet treat; using her forefinger to scoop out a bite, she sucked it off, groaning.
Edward's attention immediately went to the cream she licked from her fingertips. Forcibly, he made himself turn away from the room, the desire to spread the treat all over her beautiful body and lick the shit off inch by inch.
Reaching the kitchen, Edward yanked the drawer open to retrieve a spoon just as the basement door opened. Spoon in hand, Edward turned to find Jake and Neal standing a few feet away. "Hey. What's up?"
"Not much," Jake answered, his back leaning into the man behind him. "Where's Bells? She normally wakes me up at the buttcrack of dawn for some reason or another."
"Currently, she's resting in bed, eating ice cream from her fingers because I forgot to take her a spoon." Edward held the utensil up and waved it towards Jake.
Immediately, Jake's eyebrows lifted, and his eyes darted toward the ceiling. "What is she still doing in bed? Is she okay?"
"Apparently," Edward started as he turned away from the kitchen, he continued, "she was sicker than a dog this morning, but she seems to be feeling better. I wanna get back before she consumes all the ice cream without me. I kind of wanted a bite before it's all gone.
"Well, if you are going to be hanging around, get used to that woman when she's sick. She's a big fucking baby … please don't tell her I told you that," Jake grinned as he watched Edward pivot on his heel and beat a hasty retreat from the kitchen. "Give her a kiss for me."
"Will do," Edward called as he skipped back up the stairs. His thighs were aching by the time he made the fourth, or maybe it was rounding the sixth trip to Bella's room. Finally, he urged her over as he slid into the bed beside her. Handing Bella the spoon, he kissed her temple. "Can I get a bite of that?"
Greedily, Bella scrapped the sides of the container, looking between the melted goo and Edward. Slurping the treat from the spoon, she wrinkled her nose. "Babe? You know how I like ice cream. You really should've bought two."
Edward looked wantonly between the treat and Bella. At first, he thought she might be joking, yet no humor lit her gaze. "Bella. Give me a bite."
"No," she groaned, cupping the carton and moving away so he couldn't see it. Digging into the container, she retrieved a glob and shoveled it into her mouth. As it melted in her tongue, she glared towards him. "It's mine."
"Just a small bite," Edward grumbled, looking over her shoulder at the spoon. Suddenly, Edward was taken to another time and place. The situation was so similar to that which he shared with her months ago during Christmas. With the memory playing through his thoughts, he propped his chin on her shoulder and popped out his bottom lip. "Please?"
Bella shook her head in the negative. "Uh-uh. Go get your own."
"Bella, bite," he told her sternly. "Right now."
A bright smile crossed Bella's face as she stared into his eyes. "You are so cute when you beg."
"I'm not begging," Edward informed her with a snap of his teeth, his arm curling around her waist as he dragged her to him. "I'm demanding a bite right now."
"Say please," she grumbled, scooping a spoonful from the carton. "If you don't, I'm going to eat this bite instead of giving it to you. You really need to get some manners, Mr. Cullen."
"If you put that bite into your mouth, I will suck it straight from your tongue."
Daringly, Bella greedily shoved the bite into her mouth, a squeal erupting from her throat as Edward pinned her to the bed, his lips settling over hers. True to his word, Edward sucked the ice cream from her tongue, leaving them both laughing as he stared into her eyes.
What the heck was going on with him?
