Drew made sure to walk in a straight line through the hall as he left art on his way back to his classroom. He as proud of his dinosaur city he made and he couldn't wait to show his mom and dad.

Rosie tripped in front of him and fell on her knees. Her own dinosaur project slid across the school hallway as it left her hands.

Everyone in the class skid to a stop to wait for her. No one said anything.

"Oh no," she whined and put her head in her hands.

"I can get it," Drew hurried out of line and was about to pick up the paper when a man he'd never seen before bent down and grabbed it.

"Here you go, kiddo," the man smiled and passed it to Drew.

Drew blushed and stepped backwards. He didn't know who this man was and he thought he knew everyone at the school. He wasn't sure if he should trust this man, but he was in a police uniform sort of like the one he'd seen his mom and dad wear a few times.

"Drew," Mr. Reed called out, "You good?"

Drew's mouth gaped for a moment before he nodded. He shakily reached out and grabbed Rosie's art.

The strange man smiled, "It looks pretty cool, huh? All right, go back to your class."

Drew nodded again and hurried back to the line where Rosie was waiting next to Mr. Reed.

"You're the best, dude," Mr. Reed took Rosie's art and then her hand and began the walk back to their classroom.

Drew glanced over his shoulder where the police officer was talking to the principal. The police officer was watching him and caught his eye; he waved at Drew with a smile.

Drew squeaked softly and put the string of his hoodie in his mouth. Chewing on it distracted him from scratching and he really did want to scratch because he didn't like meeting new people. He needed to focus on getting back to class with everyone else. That was more important right now.

His focus only lasted ten minutes though because once everyone was back in their classroom seated at their desks, that police officer came in their room.

Drew grabbed his fidget cube and sank down in his chair. He had no idea why the school would suddenly hire someone new. The old police officer was fine. Drew never talked to her, but she reminded him of Sergeant Trudy and he thought that was pretty cool.

"Hi everyone," the police officer smiled, "I'm super excited to get to know all of you. My name's Officer Jones and I'm the new police officer at your school. I'm here to keep you safe and help everyone out."

"Why?" Brian blurted out.

Drew shook his head. Brian got on his nerves. He really didn't care about rules.

"Well," Officer Jones walked further in the room, "I usually work out in the city with teenagers, but I got hurt last month, so I'm going to stick to younger kids like you guys for the rest of the school year."

Drew bit his lip. He didn't like whenever his mom and dad got hurt while working. His dad had a lot of scars on him that he never told Drew about because he said they were scary things that had happened. His mom always looked weird when they brought it up, so Drew stopped asking why there were circles on his dad's shoulder.

Officer Jones started walking around the room introducing himself to everyone while they went back to coloring their book covers.

Drew breathed shakily and tried telling himself he was fine. He was polite; he could talk to new people. This man was a police officer; he had to be trustworthy.

"How's everyone doing here?" Officer Jones asked and squatted right next to Rosie's desk.

"Really good," Maryanna said, "Look what I'm drawing."

"Oh, that's so cool," Officer Jones looked at it then scanned everyone else's drawings. His eyes narrowed slightly when he looked at Drew's. He straightened up and walked around to squat next to him.

Drew nervously pulled at his hoodie, "Hi."

"Hi, buddy," Officer Jones smiled. He lightly tapped Drew's nametag taped to his desk, "Halstead, huh?"

Drew nodded.

Officer Jones tilted his head to the side, "What's your dad's name?"

Drew swallowed then said quietly, "Detective Jay."

Officer Jones's smile widened, "No way."

Drew played with his fingers, "Yeah."

Officer Jones was going to say something when his radio buzzed telling him to go to the fifth grade hallway. He clapped his hand on Drew's shoulder briefly before waving goodbye to everyone and running out of the room.

Drew sat frozen in his seat. Officer Jones actually talked to him and then touched him. He whined quietly in the back of his throat before taking a few deep breaths.

"Drew," Mr. Reed said softly and bent down to look at him, "How're you doing? Do you need anything?"

Drew bit his lip and shook his head.

"Are you sure you don't want water?" Mr. Reed asked.

"I'm okay," Drew whispered. He shakily picked up his blue crayon and went back to coloring the sky of his picture.

"If you need anything, please let me know," Mr. Reed said before gently hitting Drew's desk and walking away.

Drew let out a breath and closed his eyes. He just had a couple more hours left in school and then he could go home and sit in peace. He could make it.

Cara found Drew in the hallway once the bell rang and ran over to him so they could walk out of school together.

"I love Thursdays because my mommy takes me home," Cara said, "We get to have a snack and play games and talk just girls until Dadam comes home."

Drew wasn't paying attention to a single word she said, so he shrugged and mumbled, "Fun." He was too busy scanning the crowd to see if he could find Officer Jones. He'd been distracted the rest of the day because of him.

He stopped the second he saw him and his skin felt hot especially underneath his winter clothes.

Officer Jones was talking to his mom and Cara's mom. They were laughing.

Drew let out a huff of air that turned into a small cloud in front of him.

Cara giggled, "I can do that too, watch," she blew out her breath into several small clouds, "My daddy likes to do it too. We should play in the snow together again!"

Officer Jones bent down and looked inside Blake's stroller. He pulled the blanket down so he could see his face more.

Drew whined quietly and shook his hands.

Cara turned when she noticed he wasn't behind her. "What're you doing?" she asked, "Look! Our mommies are right there." She turned to point, then smiled herself, "They're talking to that cute officer man!" She ran over to them and hugged her mom's leg while waving up at Officer Jones.

Drew's mom looked away from Officer Jones and spotted Drew. She smiled at him and waved him over.

Drew shook his head.

Officer Jones straightened up and said something to Drew and Cara's moms before walking away.

Drew relaxed slightly then finished his walk to his mom.

"Hi," Drew's mom said and hugged him to her side, "Did you have a good day at school?"

Drew watched Officer Jones begin talking to a new group of parents and nodded, "It was fine."

"Great," Drew's mom rubbed his back. She tugged his hat further down on his head, "Let's go, we're going to have a special dinner tonight. One of Dad's friends is going to come over, so I'm going to make pastitsio."

Drew softened completely and nodded. He loved when his mom made Greek food, so he was definitely okay with going home.

As they walked to the car, Officer Jones was still in the back of Drew's head, but he was so focused on the pastitsio, that it wasn't as overwhelming as before.

Jay had Drew pinned to the ground in the living room so that Blake could attempt to tickle him to the best of his ability.

Hailey walked in with a laugh and nudged Jay with her foot, "Let him up."

"Listen to Mom!" Drew yelled through his laughter, "Buzz isn't even doing anything."

Blake giggled and fell forward onto Drew, "Doo! Doo!"

Jay smiled and let go of him, "Fine."

Drew quickly sat up and lunged at Jay, "Got you!"

Blake watched with wide eyes then crawled over and hit Jay's legs.

Hailey sat on the ground and pulled Blake on her lap away from Jay and Drew's continued wrestling match. "Daddy and Drew are being silly, huh?" she kissed the top of his head.

Blake babbled and clapped while watching Drew and Jay.

The doorbell rang and Hailey smiled, "He's here."

"Awesome," Jay caught his breath and stood up. He winked at Drew before gently pushing him back to the carpet.

Drew laughed, "Hey!"

"Hay is for horses," Jay smirked and headed over to the door.

"Oh, that was bad," Hailey laughed, "No, don't do that."

"I'm a dad, I can say dad jokes," Jay said.

"He has a point," Drew nodded.

Jay pointed to him, "Listen to your kid."

Hailey rolled her eyes, but still smiled and moved onto the couch with Blake.

Jay opened the door to see Ethan Jones waiting on the other side with a cheesecake in his hands. Jay laughed and briefly hugged him once he was inside, "How're you?"

"I'm good! You?" Ethan passed him the cake so he could slip his coat off.

"Pretty good," Jay nodded, "Just waiting for the results of the assessment center."

"Yeah, I heard about that," Ethan said, "That is really awesome. I'm sure you'll be promoted."

Hailey smiled and walked over with Blake, "Careful, he might bite your head off for possibly jinxing him."

Ethan laughed, "Eh, I think he has a soft spot for me."

"Shut up," Jay rolled his eyes, "Both of you."

"Drew," Hailey turned back to the living room, "Come here, you know Ethan."

But Drew was still sitting on the floor. He looked like he was in shock at what was happening.

"Bud," Jay returned to the living room, "I've told you about Ethan, remember? He's the one who gave me that special ornament."

Drew bit his lip and looked around him where Ethan was still standing at the front door with Hailey.

"And he works at your school now," Hailey said softly, "He said he met you today in your classroom."

Drew nodded and pulled at his shirt.

"Hey, buddy," Ethan smiled slightly and waved, "Kinda weird, huh? I know your mom and dad and now I'm the police officer at your school."

Drew shrugged and stood to stand behind Jay.

Ethan hesitantly stepped forward, "Your mom told me you like dinosaurs. I like dinosaurs too."

Drew smiled a little with a nod.

"What's your favorite one?" Jay asked.

Ethan smiled, "I'm a classic guy, I like the t-rex."

"Did you know it's really called a tyrannosaurus rex?" Drew said quietly, "And it means they're the kings of tyrant lizards."

"Whoa," Ethan knelt down on the carpet, "Really? I had no idea about the lizard thing."

"I have a book," Drew stepped around Jay, "Want me to show you?"

Ethan smiled, "That would be really cool."

"Okay," Drew smiled back and slowly walked up to his room constantly looking back at Ethan.

When he was out of sight, Ethan stood up and chuckled, "Well, sorry."

"It's okay," Hailey said softly, "He has a hard time meeting someone new."

Jay brought the cheesecake to the kitchen, "Nice call with the dinosaur thing."

"Dinosaurs are cool," Ethan said, "I really don't mind. Hailey, this food smells delicious."

"Thank you," Hailey smiled and set Blake in his highchair.

"How'd you know I didn't make it?" Jay asked.

Ethan laughed, "The only thing you can do is grill."

"Oh, that is not true," Jay said, "Hailey."

She laughed along with Ethan, "You're a fine cook, but he is right that you make really good burgers."

"I think we're about even in the cooking category," Jay crossed his arms.

"Da," Blake hit his tray.

"Even Blake agrees," Ethan smirked.

"You know what, you two are always mean to me when you're together," Jay sat next to Blake and brushed his hair back out of his eyes, "Hails, he needs a haircut."

Hailey shook her head, "Not yet."

"Hailey," Jay raised an eyebrow.

"Jay," she mocked.

"I think he's cute," Ethan said.

"Again, proving my point that you two are dangerous together," Jay shook his head.

Drew came in the kitchen with his book, "Um, are you ready…" he tilted his head to the side and looked at Hailey.

"You can call him Officer Ethan if you want," Hailey suggested.

Drew relaxed and smiled, "Okay." He sat next to Ethan at the table, "Want to look?"

"Of course," Ethan flipped through the pages with him until dinner.

"Coffee?" Jay asked Ethan once he'd cleared the table of all the plates they'd used for cheesecake.

"Sure," Ethan nodded, "Thanks."

"So Drew's distracted," Jay started and leaned against the counter, "Wanna tell us what happened that sent you to the school? I hadn't even heard you'd gotten hurt."

"Uh," Ethan rubbed the back of his neck and glanced over his shoulder where Drew was showing Blake different YouTube videos on his iPad, "I was shot last month in the arm."

Hailey's eyes widened, "How?"

"This kid got a hold of his dad's gun," Ethan shook his head, "It was horrible. He was trying to commit suicide and I got too close. Just pure chaos and a freak accident."

"You should have called," Jay said, "I would have gone to help you out."

Ethan waved his hand, "I was fine, look." He rolled up his sleeve and showed them the still rough looking scar on his bicep, "Not a huge deal."

"I've been shot, I know it's a huge deal," Jay poured the coffee, "How'd you even handle that?"

Ethan shrugged and fixed his sleeve.

"On your own?" Hailey asked.

"No, of course not," Ethan avoided looking at Jay as he passed him his coffee.

Hailey laughed softly, "You're hiding something."

"Am not," Ethan said into his mug.

"Did that girl go to your place?" Jay asked, "The one that cheated on you?"

Ethan cleared his throat, "This is really good, what brand of coffee do you two buy?"

"Are you kidding me?" Jay shook his head, "You really-" His phone rang breaking his concentration. He sighed, "This is not over." He grabbed his phone and began walking away, "Halstead."

Hailey smiled at Ethan, "You know he's protective of you."

Ethan chuckled, "Yeah. He's going all big brother."

"But in all honesty, are you okay?" Hailey asked.

"Yeah, it went straight through, one surgery and I was set," Ethan said.

Hailey shook her head, "You're lucky."

"Jay's been hit a few times, right?" Ethan asked.

Hailey breathed out then nodded, "Yeah, a few."

Ethan stared down at his coffee, "Just because I was lucky doesn't mean I ever want to do it again."

"Please don't," Hailey said quietly.

Ethan looked up at her and smiled slightly, "I'll try. Fingers crossed the elementary school's a solid place for the next few months."

"God, yeah," Hailey sighed, "Don't even joke. If anything were to happen there…"

"I know," Ethan glanced over his shoulder at Drew, "I'll keep him safe."

Hailey's lips tipped up a little, "Thank you."

Jay slowly walked around the corner with his phone still in his hand. He breathed shakily and set his hand on the counter.

"Everything okay?" Ethan asked.

Hailey waited a beat for Jay to say something, but he didn't move. "Jay," she pushed away from the table and walked to stand in front of him, "What's going on?"

"I…I was promoted," Jay said.

Hailey's eyes widened, "What?"

"I passed," Jay weakly laughed, "I'm going to be promoted to sergeant within the next month. I-I did it."

"Jay," Hailey breathed then hugged him tightly, "I am so proud of you."

Jay closed his eyes and gripped her to his chest.

"Man, that is awesome," Ethan said, "Congratulations!"

"You did it," Hailey rubbed her hands over Jay's back.

He kissed the top of her head, "I couldn't have done it without you." He made eye contact with Ethan and chuckled, "Probably couldn't have done it without you either, kid."

Ethan smirked and shrugged, "Always knew you were a top detective. Now I get to call you a sergeant."

Hailey smiled into Jay's shirt and kissed his chest before grabbing his hand and holding it to her stomach. "Sergeant Daddy," she whispered.

Jay laughed and bent down to hide his face in her shoulder, "Don't push it, Hails."

She stroked her hand over his hair, "You are amazing."

"What's going on?" Drew asked as he walked in the kitchen.

Jay wiped his nose and straightened up, "Come here."

"Oh no," Drew groaned, "What's wrong?"

"Nothing," Jay squatted down, "I got some really good news."

Drew's face lit up, "Like what?"

Jay chuckled and put his hand out, "I just found out I got that promotion. I'm going to be a sergeant."

Drew hurried over to him and didn't even hesitate to hug Jay, "I told you! I told you you could do it!"

Jay laughed and fell back to the ground, "You did."

Drew suddenly jumped up and ran to the living room, "Buzz! Buzz! Dad's going to be a sergeant."

Hailey laughed when she heard Blake squeal, "He has no idea what's happening, but he's excited."

Drew carried Blake into the kitchen, "Give Dad a hug." He put Blake on the ground and gently pushed him, "Go. Crawl to Dad."

Jay chuckled and reached over to pull Blake onto his lap, "It's exciting."

"So exciting!" Drew smiled at Hailey, "He did it!"

Hailey laughed harder and hugged him to her side, "He did."

Drew looked at Ethan, "My dad is so cool."

Ethan smiled, "He really is."

Jay stood at the front door, "Thanks for coming over. If you ever need anything, you know where to find me."

"Yeah, the big office upstairs," Ethan winked and hit Jay's arm, "See you later, Sarge." He sent one last wave toward Hailey rocking Blake in the recliner then left.

Jay took a deep breath and closed the door. He faced Hailey with a laugh, "He called me 'Sarge.'"

"Because you're going to be a sergeant," Hailey smiled.

"I can't believe it," Jay shook his head.

Hailey nodded him over and held onto his hand once he knelt next to her, "You are going to do incredible things."

Jay kissed her palm, "Thank you."

"I can't wait to work in your unit," Hailey said softly.

Jay laughed, "Can't wait to be your work partner again."

"Until then," Hailey put her hand in the air, "Parent partners."

Jay smiled and hit his hand to hers, "Best job we could have."

Blake stirred in Hailey's arms and sleepily smiled up at Jay.

"Yeah, I love being your dad," Jay poked his nose, "It's sappy, but get over it. It's been a big day for me."

Hailey brushed the back of her hand over his cheek, "I love you."

Jay looked up and smiled, "I love you too."
