The Twin Deviants
The Toga Family are fairly well-off economically. Father's a Consultant and Mother a banker. Thus unlike most people in Japan, they own their own house.
They are blessed with twin daughters, Himiko and Nanako. They have their mother's looks, but their father's eyes in shape and color.
The twins were doted on, until Himiko began showing unusual behavior that got the parents in dismay.
'Mama! Papa! Nana!' Himiko approached them with a bloody mouth, and carrying a dead bird. 'Look at this baby bird! It's so cute! It's so cute!'
'Stop that! What are you doing?!' Mama cried in horror.
'Stop smiling like that, you look so creepy!' Papa sputtered in disgust. 'Like some kind of deviant!'
Himiko got one heck of a spanking that day and Himiko cried, not knowing what she did wrong.
'Mama, Papa, maybe you should explain because what did she do?' Nanako asked while their mother spanked Himiko. 'Himiko won't learn if you spank first without saying why.'
Her sputtering father explained what was wrong, but even he admitted they were in the wrong too, and explained to Himiko that what she did, was wrong. Killing a baby bird and drinking its blood is wrong and gross, and who knows what disease it may have that she contracted from drinking its blood?
However, it also meant that Himiko's quirk awakened before she was even four. They took the twins to a Quirk Specialist to be double-sure.
'Indeed, Himiko has a Quirk. All her scans and genetic work indicates however, to a rare mutation Quirk.' said the doctor. 'Normally, children inherit one of their parents' quirks or become a composite Quirk, a mix of theirs, becoming a new power entirely. Nanako has the same mutation results but the twins are different. They have different quirks and it can be anything. Who knows what may happen, so let them skip Kindergarten for now as we normally advise families with children with rare powers. Himiko awakened but we don't know what she can do, while Nanako is dormant.'
'What about behavioral aspects?' their mama asked.
'That happens too in some Quirks. They think its normal but only for them while to everyone else, it may look weird or wrong. But let the child live their idea of normal as we can't blame them...their Quirk made them have behavioral patterns to accommodate their quirk mentally. We have such cases.' the doctor tut-tutted. 'Heck, I just had a kid last week who thinks eating even rusty metal is normal because he feels weak and sick if he doesn't have enough metal so we recommended vitamin supplements as rust is unhealthy...tetanus, anyone?' the parents choked at that.
Car ride home...
'But what vitamins can be good for that red stuff?' Himiko wondered. 'Is it cute?'
'Beats me, ask a drugstore.' said Nanako.
The parents asked a pharmacy for blood-related supplements...the strongest kind. And it was enough to suppress Himiko's need for blood and she was put into Youth Counseling Sessions, while on the lookout for Nanako.
On the twins' actual fourth birthday...
Nanako twisted and turned in her sleep.
She was having flashes in her mind.
Memories.
A life.
Suffering. Wonders of Magic. Hardships. And she was living it. Then War...and she chose Death, boarding the spiritual Hogwarts Train as she had no reason to live as all she wanted, was long gone.
Then come sunrise...
She was a different person entirely.
'...damn.' she muttered in a manner not expected for a toddler to have as no toddler should have a weary, old look on her face. 'I should have been dead, not a reincarnate.'
She also saw the memories of her new life.
Toga Nanako. Twin sister. Parents alive. A future where everyone has superpowers. A society of heroes and villains living the life of comic books. Heck, they even have costumes!
'...bloody hell.'
And on the twins' fourth birthday, Toga Nanako's quirk was Reincarnation or so her past life thought.
But six months later...she could make black mist. And shape it into anything she wants, but they disappear when she loses focus. Small objects such as toys to even tools.
"This must be what replaced my magic. This mist-thingy." she thought. And her powers are stronger at night. "Conjuration. But of course, temporary. I have to work to make them last longer."
'Nana, it's been months now, what's yours?' Himiko asked. Every after kindergarten, she's been to counseling. Her Quirk is a Blood-Trigger Shapeshifting Quirk. It doesn't work on animals, only people. And the more blood she drinks, the longer she remains in that form of the person whose blood she drank, and their parents forbade her from using her Quirk and kept her on vitamins to suppress her urges to get blood as she had an urge to drink because each time she transforms, she consumes the nutrients in blood making her anemic and 'thirsty'! And her mouth gets bigger and wider when she smiles.
Better vitamins than blood. What if the person she tried to drink from has STDs or something?
And even at home, the girls were constantly taught to be normal, putting immense pressure.
Their parents were more accepting of Nanako's conjuration Quirk. And she's stronger at night while weak during the day.
And in this Quirk-Obsessed Society, names are based on one's Quirk come awakening. Until then, names are in hiragana.
Himiko got her renaming when they learned from counseling the nature of her Quirk. Himiko was 'to put on somebody on a girl'. And when Nanako awakened, hers was 'to become something' and 'girl'. And the family name Toga meant 'migrate self'.
Nanako who was once a witch from over 1500 years ago found her surname ironic. "That might have been the trigger to my reincarnation here."
She was once, Corona Potter. A Half-Blood Witch born to a Pureblood Father and Muggleborn Mother.
Grew up like Cinderella in the hands of her relatives, and in a fair-weather society in Magical Britain, she was forever under watch and judged. A suffocating life that she chose death as she thought of pros and cons, unknown to her friends.
And now, it feels as if nothing changed a bit somehow.
The whole world became a propaganda centering around Quirks, Heroes and Villains. You'll be judged based on Quirk alone which is why their parents feared Himiko's quirk going public and in turn affect the whole family's reputation. Only Nanako was allowed to go public with her powers. And to tell the twins apart, they have a different hairstyle. Himiko wears her messy buns, and Nanako wears hers in low pigtails.
Nanako being mentally an adult, knew things won't end well...
Their parents treating Himiko coldly and Himiko doing her best yet it was never enough. They did everything they could to suppress her abnormal tendencies, putting immense effort to repress it, and successfully hid this side of herself for years.
Nanako knew she had to support her somehow because she knew full well Himiko is cracking.
She would teach Himiko how to be a girl because would their mother teach her?
Nanako spent time with her, doing things together. Teaching her how to cook(easy-to-make healthy dishes both Japanese and Western), do the laundry, and how to take care of herself. They even shop together for cute clothes.
They were under pressure to be normal or else.
Sure Quirk-Wise Nanako's strong enough to protect themselves...but they're too young to be disowned.
'Disowned, huh?' Himiko mused as late afternoon after club in Junior High, they stayed to talk for privacy's sake.
'That's what awaits us if we failed their normal standards.' said Nanako bitterly. 'Look at our society Himiko.' she waved an arm towards the city they can view from the school rooftop. 'There's nothing normal about this world. So why are they looking for normal?'
'Beats me. I want to be normal and live my kind of normal, but I can't.' Himiko pouted. 'But if I do, everyone will hate me. I want to live, Nana-chan.' she complained to Nanako before looking sad. 'But I can't live.'
'That would mean making a tough choice.'
'...'
Himiko wilted. To be free, she can never go home again. It was why Nanako was teaching her how to take care of herself. But Himiko wonders where she learned all THAT.
'That's up to you. For now, study hard and get the best grades possible...and work hard in Gymnastics Club.' said Nanako. 'The future is inevitable, Himiko. Try as they might want to deny reality.' she said grimly to her sister's gloominess.
'But what about you, Nana-chan?' Himiko looked at her younger twin who was way too mature she somehow felt ashamed of herself for being childish and she was the older twin.
'For now, let's use them.' Nanako told her. 'I don't believe in conditional love either. That's exactly what our life is and our parents never really loved us.' she decided coldly. 'Compulsory Education is only up to Junior High only. Two more years to go.'
'...'
Himiko sadly looked at her twin.
Their life was entirely because of her.
"If I leave, will Nana-chan be OK...?"
She knew she had to go. She doesn't like their life either. Their parents are cold to them. They hardly talk to them anymore. Where did that time go, the time that they were both loved?
Both sisters have high grades, ranging in 85-90s. They're in different clubs too. Himiko was in Gymnastics while Nanako was in Karate.
Come Junior High School Graduation...
Himiko, out of kindness to her sister, vanished after their graduation ceremony while barely restraining herself, and committed murder elsewhere to begin living her normal life.
As for Nanako...
When Himiko went missing for a week, their parents didn't bother filing a Missing Person's Report and actually relaxed, and threw out Himiko's things and acted as if nothing happened while treatment of her suddenly changed to doting parents mode!
This made Nanako leave home out of disgust, taking with her, important files and some of her belongings.
She can easily get money for herself by robbing a bank to finance her living.
