A lot of Dragon Ball crossover fanfics (in my opinion) usually focuses on fanservice/guilty pleasure and not the story. This includes the harem, the obvious power fantasy, putting a spotlight on this one character, one-sided favoritism, domination and much more. However, this fanfic I made is aimed to see if my storytelling and myself in general had grown better than how I was before (trust me, you don't wanna read my old fics-they're the embodiment of cringe).
Now before you go in, remember, no harems, no pairings and will feature a more wiser and much, much, much older Son Goku so if you don't like that then this fanfic isn't for you. The time skip here between Super is INSANE and there are a lot of character development happening in the background before this story even starts so I just wanted to warn you beforehand.
Dragon Ball characters might seem different here but I'll try not to deviate them too far from the original. Also, this will also contains some OCs since I usually use them to help me with many things. If you don't like that then I sincerely apologize, just don't read it if you don't like any of above.
Now, please do enjoy.
Prelude:
"Alas, Son Goku is Not Satisfied with Strength Alone"
A lone figure sat on a grass field with pink skies stretched endlessly over the horizon. Wind blows gently as grasses softly rattles in response to the wind and the person's iconic palm tree-like hair followed suit, flowing to the direction of where the wind was blowing. A long look can be seen on his face, pondering deeply about something. Son Goku was the name of this person, a Saiyan Warrior who now is the strongest.
It has been more than more than millenniums since the Tournament of Power ended, where his journey in search for true strength had come to an end. What happens after were quite the troublesome events.
A Saiyan whose potential was far beyond that of Goku's and Vegeta's and could even match against Beerus the God of Destruction.
An evil God who was able to seal many powers including the Saiyan transformations and Ultra Instinct.
Another Android whose objective was to turn all the powerful fighters of the universe into candy so she could eat and obtain their powers.
The reincarnation of Majin Buu; "Uub" becoming a disciple of Goku to protect the Earth.
The new warriors from unknown universes and newly revived universes whose power are a threat to the whole multiverse.
A time patroller's mistake ending up distorting space and time in every parts of world lines, causing different versions of known warriors to appear out of nowhere.
Then comes the Primordial Titans of which whom wanted to battle against the strongest of the universes, giving Goku yet another limit to surpass.
Things has challenge him over and over again until...he reached to where he is now.
Power beyond anything and everything, Goku even managed to surpass every Gods of Destruction and properly ascended pass the realms of the Primordial Titans. He had already discovered the strength he had been searching for all of his life with the help of Jiren; the strength of bonds and camaraderie during the first Tournament of Power. It sounds fantastical but it isn't exactly what it meant. The power of one can't be more powerful than the power of many. It was as simple as that and yet, it took a long time to search for it.
But that's all over now.
He passed his job as Earth's Protector to Gohan or Saiyaman to be "preferred" who then passed to Goten whose generation were quite colorful to say the least. The lineage of the Son as one of Earth's Protector continues on as time passes by and even Vegeta managed to get his lineage going down. Currently, said Prince of Saiyans is Universe 7's God of Destruction meanwhile Goku, with the help of Cosmic Ascendance training, had became ageless. He currently resides within the Sacred Kai Realm, just living there and watching over the universe along with the new fused Supreme Kai Kibito. They would oversee the events folding on Earth and threats around the universe just in case if they needed Goku's mentorship.
However, they handled them just fine and Goku was left with nothing to do other than training (to which really frustrates Kibito as he would be the only one partner Goku has aside from Vegeta) but that became stale once there were no obstacles to overcome, nothing. Jiren pretty much gave up on getting stronger and finds peace in a peaceful planet as he had already found what he was looking for. Vegeta is constantly busy with his job as the God of Destruction and Goku had long surpassed him even when Vegeta attained Ultra Instinct.
There was nothing more for him...
"What should I do now?" Finally, Goku asks a question he himself has yet to answer.
Sitting cross-legged while staring at the pink skies, Goku ponders. He had achieved everything he ever wanted, becoming the strongest but it left him with nothing more to accomplish.
Perhaps he should've died and join with Chi Chi in Heaven?
Goku shook his head, after all that time neglecting his duties as a father and leaving her alone just so he could train, how could he ever face her? He didn't even attend her funeral and went on hiding, regretting and crying. Sure, she was pushy but it was because she merely wanted Goku to become a better father. He couldn't face her in Heaven, he was too ashamed.
"Maybe..." Goku frowns, "...I made the wrong choice." Feeling quite upset with himself, Goku just let out a sigh and calms down. "I should take a rest."
Just as Goku leans his back on the grass, a familiar pillar of light struck down onto the grass field of the Sacred Kai Realm. Goku sat up and immediately recognizes the energy signature or specifically, the God Ki. As the pillar of light shrinks and dissipates, Vegeta stood there in his God of Destruction attire along with Whis who's in front of him.
"Hey, Vegeta!" Goku grins, as he stood up and went towards them both. "Long time no see, buddy!"
Vegeta smiles at the sight of his old rival and gave a nod of acknowledgement, "Likewise, Kakarot."
"So what's up?" Goku asks, a bit confused at Vegeta and Whis' sudden appearance since they're always busy. "Did you really come all the way here to train with me?"
The God of Destruction smirked, "Always the same idiot as you were." That smirk however, quickly disappeared from his face took a form of a serious expression. Vegeta shook his head, "No, I'm afraid it isn't as simple as that, Kakarot."
Goku stopped before them, eyes blinking in an innocent manner as he was more confused. "Then whaddya come here for?"
Vegeta sighs, "The Primordial Titans have asked for your audience, Kakarot." He began, it seemed as though there were something more to this and Goku realizes it. "We are here to take you to the Grand Priest. He'll teleport you to the Lair of the Primordials."
"What do they want now?" Goku asked but quickly shove it off, there surely be a good reason so he agreed to it. "Alright then."
"Whis." Vegeta ordered.
Whis merely gave a nod, "Hai."
"Kakarot, you know the drill."
Goku walks to Vegeta and along with him, they placed their palms on Whis' back. Immediately, their surroundings were shrouded in white and they flung through the universe for a few minutes onto the Void then to Zen'Oh's Domains. Once they arrived, Goku could see the Grand Priest waiting with quite a look on his face. Goku couldn't really describe it, was it nervousness? Fright? Uncertain? Angry? Irritated?
Goku didn't know.
And he wouldn't impose it.
He just stood there raising his hand to greet as he usually does to everyone. "Yo, Grand Priest!" Usually, Goku would be criticized for his rude behavior but ever since he defeated and surpass the Primordial Titans, no one really minded his casual ethics. "I wonder what they want, do you have any ideas?" He asks but the Grand Priest shook his head.
"I don't know, you'll just have to ask them." The Grand Priest replied before he prepared himself. "Let us depart, Son Goku-san. We mustn't make them wait."
"Alright! Don't be so hasty, they won't really mind." Goku shrugs, the Grand Priest wincing a bit at how he casually regarded the Primordial Titans, something even he wouldn't dare to interact, like they're friends he had to meet. "Well, let's go to the Primordial Titans!" Goku flew to where the Grand Priest is and held his palm onto his back just like he did with Whis. "It's been a long time since I've seen them, kinda miss them." Goku commented as he was preparing to be teleported.
However, before they could depart, Vegeta called out to him. "Kakarot."
"Hm?" Goku turned his face towards Vegeta, giving him a somewhat confused look. "What is it, Vegeta? Is something the matter?" Goku replied, tilting his head to the side.
"...be good, old friend." Vegeta said.
It's quite unusual seeing Vegeta or a God of Destruction worrying for someone-even more so when Vegeta often were cold towards Goku because of his idiocy. But they've been rivals for a very long time and it's only a matter of time that their friendship evolved into something much more. After each of them lost their loved ones and suffered great losses, the only comfort they find is from each other with a harsh training schedule packed. Beating each other to ease and distract themselves and ever since then, they bonded as actual friends.
Goku gave that dumbfounded-blinking-eyes-face before grinning and gave Vegeta a thumbs up, "Yep, I'll be sure to keep that in mind old buddy! Hehe." Goku then gave his wave usually reserved that he'll be fine at Vegeta, "Well, see ya!" He taps his palm on Grand Priest, "Let's go, Grand Priest!" Said person nodded in response.
After that, Goku and the Grand Priest was out of sight, phasing into nothingness. Silence came next accompanied by the howls of the Void outside Zen'Oh's Domains. Vegeta stood in silent as he stares at the position where Goku and the Grand Priest was, seemingly thinking deeply. The Angel shifts his eyes towards the Universe 7's God of Destruction in curiosity, wanting to know why this decision was made without much consideration and mind put in.
Whis, who's been silence all this time, spoke up. "Are you sure about that?" He asked, getting the attention of Vegeta. "He didn't even know and we won't sure he'll come back."
Vegeta was silent, still staring at the same position before he closed his eyes and give his reply. "Yes."
Whis hums in interest, it was always interesting how Vegeta and Goku interact during these few decades. It really intrigues how time could change one's personality for the better or worse. In this case, it was actually for the better.
"May I ask why, Vegeta-sama?" Whis addresses him in a very polite manner to which even now Vegeta was not used to it.
After all, Vegeta was a disciple of Whis before he became the God of Destruction. He was often referred casually, just a simple "Vegeta" and not "Vegeta-sama". But the question Whis had was reasonable, it really is. After all, Vegeta knows what was going to happen to Goku. One of the Primordial Titans told him about it and even agreed to it. Of course, no one knows this except for Whis who accompanies him nearly everywhere.
"Kakarot needs another reason to live." Vegeta answers in a calm tone, "Unlike me, Kakarot has nothing else to live for. I still have Bulla and Trunks, knowing they're still alive eases me but Kakarot...he has no family left other than his descendance-not Gohan, Goten, Pan or anyone else and I'm sure that won't make him feel as ease as I am now." Vegeta opens his eyes and smiles-not the cocky smirk that's usually adorned on his face or anything but an actual genuine smile. "I know he isn't satisfied with how his life is going. Even if we did tell him, he'll still go either way so it's not much difference."
Whis raises his eyebrows at Vegeta's consideration, something he had never seen ever.
Not even when he was still a mortal.
"I see..." Whis muttered to himself.
"Besides, he deserves it." Vegeta turns and looks at Whis, "His life had been rough and I owe him much more than he owed me. This is the least I could do for him."
"Hmm..." Whis hums in interest, "You're so much different now compare to when you destroyed planets and galaxies."
Vegeta scoffs, "That's a job, I won't let my feelings get in the way."
"And yet Earth still stands." Whis teases, forcing him to realize that he was such a softie when it comes to certain things.
"Tch." Vegeta clicks his tongue in annoyance, completely got himself cornered. "Let's just go."
"Very well, Vegeta-sama." Whis chuckled.
"We have nothing to worry about, he can take care of himself. This is Kakarot we're talking about." Vegeta reminded.
Whis' smile widened, "Indeed." He lift his head up and stares onto the Void, remembering the old days when he was a mentor to both Vegeta and Goku. "He had come a long way, surpassing Beerus-sama, me and even the Primordial Titans. Never would I see a day where he reach the utmost limit..."
Vegeta stopped momentarily, thinking about how Goku had gone so strong there left no one to fight. He needed something else to live for, something other than fighting and getting stronger. He may not be the great person anyone would've admired but he was a good person. He deserves so much more than what he had right now.
With another smile, Vegeta gave his good wishes: 'Live a proper good life, old friend. I'm sure you'll find it there.'
Arriving in what seemed to be a throne room with five thrones in total, Goku smiles at the sight of familiar place. It's been a long time ever since he visited the Lair of the Primordials. He used to visit this place often due to his desire to fight and surpass all of them. That was more than a few hundred years ago and now...they all seemed weaker. He guessed that this was the side effect of being too strong.
"Son Goku-san, it's up to you now. I'll be taking my leave." The Grand Priest said and disappeared into thin air, leaving Goku alone in such a hurry. He didn't know why but the Angels with the exception of Whis are always be hurry to leave when it comes to the Primordial Titans.
Goku shrugs and walked forward, "Yo guys! It's been a long time, eh?" Goku greeted.
Sitting on each throne were foreign beings, so foreign in fact that none of them were recognized even in the multiverse. Well, except for one whom clearly had an appearance of a Human. While one of them looked like a Human, it was still quite foreign looking.
One looked like a humanoid being made of metal with its body having to look like tubes., it had no face except for its metallic teeth sticking out. It sat in a polite manner while others looked like they were proper higher beings except for the Human-looking one.
The other one looked more like a golem with its headless body made from unknown materials but had textures of stones. Ingrained on its body are gems and runes glowing green in color as various designs were ebbed within.
On the other side, this one has a body that glowed bright orange much like the sun and have a helmet on its face. Its helmet were reminisce of a Spartan helmet, a warrior of past.
The Human-looking one was a woman with bright cyan hair tied in twin tails with matching eye color. She wore a white dress and she had a smile on her face as she kept staring at Goku.
Sitting in the middle amongst the throne was a being with a body that simulates universes it seems as though countless realities resided within its body. It had eyes of which no irises can be seen glowing but other than that, there were no other facial features.
"Son Goku." The middle one greeted, "Yes, it's been quite a while since we've met."
"Hehe, thanks for having me then, Rhekis!" Goku replied. "Man, do I really miss you guys!" Goku gave a grin, causing the woman to smile wider.
"You've always been such a sight for me, Son Goku." The woman with an exotic hair color exclaimed, smiling rather teasingly towards the Saiyan. "To be honest, I just want to keep you all to myself~!"
The metallic one sighed, "Please behave yourself, Xelia. Remember why we asked for his presence here."
The now named Xelia merely puffed her cheeks in annoyance, "You're always so serious, Yverin. I was just teasing him."
"And as you see, it doesn't work-" The golem one raises its hand, motioning it towards the innocent and confused Goku. "Like it always had been."
"Ah, here comes another one." Xelia commented rather blankly as if she had expecting that. "Yverin and you, Frijar. Always had been so stingy when it comes to Goku."
"We're just being serious here..."
"Yeah."
"Isn't it alright?" The solar being places in his two cents, nodding with his arms crossed. "I got to agree with Xelia on this one. It's been a while we had an entertainment in our lair. Son Goku always brings me in a good mood."
"Right!?" Xelia grins, "Even Quzin's with me on this one!" She giggles, "Hooray for me!"
Rhekis, seemingly the leader of sorts, sighed. "Sorry for their liveliness. I don't know where they got it from-I assumed they've got it from overseeing the mortals of different realities, especially Xelia." He let out another sigh but nevertheless, Rhekis also does seemed happy to have Goku here in their quiet chamber. "But yes, we are indeed more than enthusiastic to see you, Son Goku." Xelia nodded happily while Quzin gave a small nod. "It seems you're far more powerful than when we last met."
Goku rub the back of his head in embarrassment, "Pretty much! Never have I neglect my training! I need to get stronger and stronger after all! Hehe!" Rhekis' eyes squints a bit as Goku places his hands on each side of his hips, "So, whaddya call me for? Both Vegeta and the Grand Priest seemed bothered by this."
"Vegeta...the one with the power closest to the Primordial Titans, was it?" Goku nodded, "I see. Very well." Rhekis nodded, "I'll get to the point then; Son Goku, we want to ask of you for something." The mood did a complete 180 as the playful atmosphere changes into this tense one which even caused Goku to frown as well.
It was sudden it really caught Goku off. But nevertheless, he himself knows better to make light of situation so he just went with the flow. It seems something serious so he had to take this one seriously as well.
"Alright. If it's within my powers, I'll do it." Goku replied seriously, sending shivers into them all. The sight of serious Goku is something they rarely seen after all.
"Oh, it's within your powers of course." Rhekis said in a matter-of-fact tone. "You see, a certain...God had been killed for reasons unknown in a certain universe outside of your multiverse." He began, Goku frowns even more at the mention of a God getting killed. It's undoubtedly be something only he can do, perhaps battling against something? "We ask of you to go there and observe what had happened."
"Wait, what?" Goku blinks, dumbfounded at their request. "You want me to check things out? That's only it?" Goku asked, confused.
Rhekis nodded, "Yes, that is it." Then he sighed, "In his planet, it's been more than million years and it's far longer from here. We've recently found out that the God we sent there was killed. We want to know the reason and the perpetrator behind it."
"I see..." Goku nodded before he decided to give them a warning. "But you have to know, I'm not really good at investigating." Goku gave a fair argument, he indeed was the least best person for this type of job. "I'm a warrior, not a detective. I only know how to fight"
Xelia gave Goku a warm smile, "Don't worry, Goku. We know which is why we sent you." That further confuses Goku, what could possibly make them really think that he was a good choice in this? Surely, there must be someone better. "Your power will draw attention and it'll only be a matter of time before the culprit comes out from the darkness."
Goku rubbed the back of his head once again, unsure of their decisions but decided to trust them anyway. "Well...alright then. I'll go."
"That's an answer we've been expecting." Rhekis said in a soft tone, "Son Goku, you have defeated and surpassed all of us, the Primordial Titans. No beings there poses a threat to you but I'm sure different kinds of obstacle will appear and cause you trouble. However, we believe you will make it through and..." Goku could imagine that Rhekis was smiling upon him, "...perhaps you'll find something that'll lighten up your heart once again. Without delaying you any further, we'll depart you to that universe." They all raised their hands, "Good luck, Son Goku."
"Have a nice trip there, Goku." Yverin said.
"I wish you best of luck, Son." Frijar followed.
"You'll be fine, stay strong warrior!" Quzin gave a hearty laugh.
"Well, I'll always be watching you, Goku! I'll never miss any opportunity to observe every angle." Xelia came in with her teasing as she winked, "Remember, we're waiting here and don't worry about time. You have plenty of that! Endless even, hehehe!"
"Farewell!" They all chorus together and a beam came out of their palms, culminating into one ball in the middle and shot down to Goku, covering him in a ball of light.
"I'm excited, that's for sure." Goku grinned, "Alright then, let's see what this universe has to offer."
The space warped and Goku was absorbed into it as it closes up. Once he was gone, like the situation with Vegeta and Whis earlier, silent occupies the throne room. They all were silent and because of their lack of facial characteristic aside from Xelia, no once can tell what they're thinking or what expression they were making.
However, Xelia clearly had a face of someone uncertain. "Rhekis, you sure we should do this? We already knew that God we sent there had died because of the war between the three factions right? Why else should we sent him there?" Xelia began to process before her eyes widen, "You surely aren't thinking that we should get rid of him right?"
Rhekis quickly shook his head, "No, no. Of course not." Even the others shook their heads, "Goku is a special existence, he is our most dearest friend. You see how he was able to completely change this empty lifeless room into something, well, alive right? Let's be honest here, we need him."
"But then...why?" Even Quzin was confused. "There has to be a good reason."
"There is and I'm sure it'll sound a bit underwhelming." Rhekis then state his reason, "Goku...needs to live again."
"Eh?" Xelia was the first one to voice out, "You mean to tell me that you're doing this...because you want him to properly live again? Just that? Is that why you said that something there will lighten his heart again?"
Rhekis nodded and sighed, "Yes." That really shocked the other Titans. "Please understand, Son Goku is a mortal whom we met and came to be interested in. I merely want to help him."
"..."
"..."
"..."
"..."
They were all silent before they look at each other, Rhekis was a bit nervous at what they thought of his decisions. However, what came next was them smiling at each other and nods of approval. That somewhat surprises Rhekis.
Yverin chuckles, "We're all are soft, aren't we?"
Frijar chides in, "Indeed we all are."
Xelia giggles, "I didn't expect that from you, Rhekis. After all, you were the one who was the most hostile to Goku when we first met him."
"..." Rhekis was silent before he decides to speak up, "Let's change topics, please?"
The Lair of the Primordials had never been that lively as after Goku's departure, they will have a good time observing him. It didn't need to be a good reason, it didn't need to be very mysterious and foreshadowing reason, it didn't need to be epic or anything of sort. It just needs to be cared and while their intentions may seem miniscule, it was large for the Primordial Titans. For them to worry and taking a liking to Goku, it's something he is capable of after all.
This is a story of Son Goku discovering something other than true strength.
In search of his feelings, other things he needed, perhaps even a redemption.
Why?
Well, because:
Alas, Son Goku is not Satisfied with Strength Alone.
The moment Son Goku appeared in the universe of which he was asked to investigate, his large pool of power spread endlessly through the universe, causing every single powerful creatures to notice and even worried. The appearance of a power beyond their own understanding, an unknown being. The oldest fear has always been the fear of unknown after all.
However, while others are having concerns, a certain infinite dragon sees this as an opportunity to be used against its archenemy...
