Hello!

Welcome to the first chapter of "Fear The Light"!

As you can see, this is a PJO x SCP Foundation mythos crossover.

I hope you will enjoy this teaser!

Fear the Light

Chapter 1

Hunted Huntress

Naomi was scared.

For the first time in her immortal life, she was scared like this. She did not feel fear such as this since she joined the Hunters of Artemis. She was the immortal huntress, and yet, all her basic instincts were going haywire.

She could not understand what was going on. She felt helpless against whatever was hunting her. How ironic the situation it was, that the huntress became prey.

It all started very innocently. She was asked by Zoe – one of her dearest friends from the hunt and also Artemis' lieutenant – to hunt down a few animals and bring them to the camp. In other words, it was her shift to provide some food for incoming dinner.

Not in even thousands of years, she would think that a daily routine task will become a battle for her life.

Then, while tracking some wild animals, she felt something… familiar. She was not entirely sure what was so familiar to her, but for her, it was almost like a déjà vu. She could not tell if it was because she felt like she has already been in this place, or if her mind suddenly decided to play some tricks on her. But there was something she could recognize.

And so, she decided to follow the familiarity. The longer she walked, the more familiar this entire situation became. And yet, she was still unable to tell or recall anything that could help her recognize this feeling.

Some people perhaps would just turn around, others would probably freak out and run away. But not Naomi – she was an immortal huntress after all. She was stronger and faster than mortals and demigods. She was able to hold her ground in a fight. And if something would go wrong, she would just call her sisters and her goddess.

Or so she thought.

For a few minutes, she walked through the forest, carefully and quietly walking between the trees. After a while, she noticed a large cave. It was large enough for many people to enter it at the same time.

And there was something weird in this cave… Weirdly familiar. This was weird because she never visited any caves since she was a child – and surely not when the heart of the west came into the USA. She was more than sure that she never visited this place. And yet – the familiar sense was coming from the inside.

And then – she heard a voice coming from the cave.

"Help! Please, help me! Help!" It was the voice of a small girl, begging for someone to save her.

Naomi instantly summoned her bow. She was ready to storm the cave and kill whoever was tormenting a small girl. A small part of her was thinking that she should alert her sisters and wait for help. But that thought was quickly repressed. Naomi knew what she had to do.

And so, despite years of experience, she entered the cave.

The deeper she ventured into the cave, the more voices she could hear from the deep darkness before her. They were all begging for help. Both males and females, of various ages. And they were all calling for help.

After a minute of walking, she finally came into what seemed to be the source of the voices. Thanks to her improved eyes - one of many gifts given to every huntress from Artemis – she could actually see something in the dark corridors of the cave.

What she saw was something beyond her imagination. It was not anything she has ever encountered as a huntress.

Inside the cave, there was a pack of dozen of weird creatures. They were all large, larger even than Artemis' wolves. The creatures were red and had many spikes, coming from their paws, mouths, and even back. Those spikes looked like massive needles, ready to pierce everything in their way. And to make it worse, those creatures had no eyes.

And yet, Naomi could swear that they were all looking at her.

At that moment, Naomi was more than sure, that it wasn't the first time she saw those creatures. Now she could recall the moment when she was still just a child. She went to a similar cave far from her city with her friends.

And that is why she knew what will happen next.

Immediately she turned around and started to run, as fast as she could. She could hear how the entire pack of those creatures has already started to run after her, ready to kill and devour her.

Her heart was beating faster than ever, almost as if it was trying to punch its way out of Naomi's chest. Her mind was filled with terror, she was scared beyond imagination. The only reason why she was still alive was that she was faster than any mortal.

She begged all greek gods for her legs to have enough strength to take her back to the hunters' camp. She knew she must warn Artemis and her sisters about incoming danger. Only then the nightmare will end.

Soon she escaped the cave and ventured deeper into the forest. She knew the way to her sisters, she knew that soon she will be safe. And then her goddess will hunt down those…

Those… What her goddess was supposed to hunt?

Naomi could not recall. She could not recall what exactly she was running away. She had a problem with remembering what she was doing, or where she even was. What was she supposed to report to her sisters? What was she doing here?

She could barely remember anything that happened in the last thirty minutes. There was just nothing in her head that would help her remember. Nothing except for red.

The red color was the only thing she could recall. Deep in her mind, something was screaming at her about the color red. The red was scary, the red meant death.

As she stood in the middle of the forest, she felt something familiar all around her. She knew that she already was in a similar situation, but she could not remember when or where. And something inside her was telling her to investigate whatever was so familiar to her.

She walked through the forest, with the feeling only growing stronger within her.

Then she heard voices. Many voices, both young and old, male and female, begging for help. It was almost as if all those people were slaughtered by something.

Naomi summoned her bow, ready to send a few deadly arrows to whatever was lurking inside the cave. And then, just a second later, something jumped at her. It was just thanks to her pure survival instinct that she reacted in time. She dodged just in time to avoid deadly teeth.

Sadly, a few paws have reached her, tearing through her clothes and skin. She was now bleeding.

Naomi noticed that the creature that attacked her was not something she has ever seen in her life… No… It took her a second, but she had realized that it was not the first time seeing this creature. She once again knew that inside this cave there are still at least a few other conspecifics. And that now she was her prey.

She once again started to run. As fast as she could, towards her sisters and goddess, completely ignoring the pain in her left leg. It was just a small wound, and for Naomi that was nothing. She was a huntress after all.

As she kept running, she also started to forget. Why she was running? Why her leg was bleeding? Who or what attacked her? Once again, all she could recall was the uneasy feeling of déjà vu and irrational fear of the color red.

She panicked. Why she was not able to remember anything? What was happening? And what was that weird feeling of Déjà vu?

She wanted to know more. She wanted to have the answers to all those weird questions. But she was not sure what to do. Investigate or go back to the camp?

At that moment, she heard many voices. They were all calling for help. And then, with the corner of her eye, she saw something red. She wasn't sure what it was, but her instinct was screaming at her to run away as fast as possible.

And so, without a second thought, despite her bleeding leg, she decided to listen to her inner instinct.

She ran like a wounded animal, fighting for every second of her life. Without looking back, not slowing down even for a second.

Until she slammed into something and fell to the ground.

When she looked up, to see with what she had a nasty contact, her heart stopped for a second. Because all she saw, was red.

"Naomi…"

She didn't know what it was. But the red knew her name. The red has found her and now it wanted to kill her. But she was not going to die without a fight.

As she drew out her hunting knives, she felt something stinging her neck. The last thing she saw before losing her consciousness, was someone wearing a weird gas-mask, with red glowing eyes…

And that is it for now.

I hope you have enjoyed the first chapter. I guess you can say it is a prologue/teaser of the incoming series called "Fear the Light".

In this chapter, we had one of Artemis hunters being hunted by a pack of SCP-939's.
