Note: I don't own Soul Eater I just make the characters do stuff I want them to. Now this was a fantastic prompt from and awesome friend, and I seriously hope everyone enjoys reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. Rated T cause of my habit of being excessively careful. Enjoy!

She pokes him just where she assumes his ribs ought to be, is a bit surprised when the soft tissue of his torso just yields beneath her probing. Something resembling a snort comes from him, but when she turns to glare at him, he's just staring at her intently, as if she were the subject, rather than he himself.

"What?"

"Isn't that what you're trying to figure out?"

"I'm sorry?"

"Don't be. It's the reaction of most humans. Though, no one has ever been quite so thorough in that endeavor."

She blushes a vibrant pink, and he smiles widely, exposing his pearly whites, dagger sharp, causing a little shiver to run up her spine that isn't exactly as unpleasant as she would hope for. Bastard knows how to make an entirely different species than his own flustered, how is that fair?

"Oh, I don't mean to make you uncomfortable you know. I thought that.. hmmm… smiling? Isn't that usually an acceptable thing to do to express your fondness?"

"Oh my- damn you're a dork."

"I am not whale genitalia, whatever made you come to that conclusion? And to think, I actually had some faith you might be able to figure me out."

"To be clear, the genitalia is not whale specific, and I was actually referring to the fact that you're a bit socially awkward. Though, I'm not sure you have much practice with being social with humans… do you?"

"Not exactly. I'm not terribly fond of them normally. Especially not hoards of them. But.."

"Hm?"

"You seem less… difficult."

"Difficult?"

"It's much easier to be around you. Though I suppose that might be due to the fact that you are actually interested in me rather than frightened. Apparently my features are a bit abnormal?"

She giggles a little at the sarcastic tone in his voice. He's had enough time to pick up on some human tendencies. Figures that sarcasm would be one of the ones that stuck, snarky little martian…

"I'm not from Mars! I'm offended you would think so… Martians are hostile little creatures, and not nearly as tolerable to look at…little red faced horny devils, they can't even dance…"

Maka has the good grace not to cackle at the description he supplies, though it takes plenty of effort.

"I guess I'll have to take your word on th- WAIT. Shit, can you read my mind too?!"

"I've been around you long enough to pick up on your thought process, that's all. Your thoughts are your own, Maka."

"Are they, really?"

"Unless you wish to truly share them."

She ponders his statement for a moment, intrigued by the idea.

"So… can you..? I mean, do you have a way to do that?"

"What? Share unfiltered thoughts and emotions with another? Of course. It's called Resonance."

She doesn't understand why she blushes at this, but decides not to look too deeply into it.

"So… Resonance, how does it work…?"

"I can show you better than i could possibly explain it. But I don't think it's exactly fair of me to ask you to go in blind. It's the joining of souls, simply put."

"And.. you would resonate with me? I mean, so I could better understand you, for my research! Yeah.."

He chuckles a bit at her flustered demeanor, but concedes. Not before informing her of what Resonance entails though.

"Maka."

She startles at the use of her name on his lips, his eyes nearly glowing as he stares into hers.

"Soul?"

"This is not a one way kind of thing. It is equal. An exchange. Though you will get all of me, I will also see all of you. Are you comfortable with that?"

She's surprised at how quickly she can make her decision.

"Yes."

He smiles at her, this time softly, eyes somehow affectionate, lips curling upward in a sweet sign of contentment. It makes her stomach flutter, and she's not sure if she resents that fact or welcomes it.

"Okay. It is an honor, Maka, to share and join with a lovely creature like yourself."

He presses his forehead to hers and interlocks their fingers, eyes clamped shut and brow furrowed in concentration.

And then, the dam breaks, and they are one.
