Chapter 35

Caroline stiffened when Elena walked into her eyesight. Elena's usually tan skinned; paled when she looked down at the decrepit pair. Caroline's arms were wrapped around Stefan's neck in a vice grip and Elena could instantly tell that Stefan wasn't uncomfortable with the blonde's arms being there or the fact that her lips had been on his.

"Stefan?" Elena whispered softly, "What's going on here?" She croaked the last bit out as she looked back and forth between Stefan and Caroline.

Stefan and Caroline glanced at each other. This wasn't exactly how they had planned this to go down. This was only going to lead to more havoc after an already volatile situation. Damon moved forward and shoved Elena out of his way. He could see the wolf's bite. It was branded on Stefan's skin and in a matter of a few hours, Stefan would be dangerous and violent and Damon would have to kill him. Stefan dying wasn't an option. He needed his brother – he did the same for him and it was now Damon's turn to return the favor.

"We need to get to Klaus." Damon helped hoist his brother off the floor.

"You know that isn't an option." Katherine spoke as she moved forward to help.

Stefan grunted in pain as Damon hoisted him on his side. Elena pulled herself straighter and moved forward to help but both Damon and Katherine again pushed her out of the way as they carried Stefan indoors.

Everyone followed suit except for Caroline and Elena. The two were staring at each other. Un moving. Caroline shifted side to side. She and Stefan had never really discussed how they were going to approach everyone with their relationship. But Caroline couldn't think of discussing all the awkwardness now, Stefan had been bitten. They needed to help him and she needed to be by his side.

"Can we discuss this later?" Caroline broke the silence.

Elena laughed without humor and glared at Caroline.

"No we are going to discuss this now. I think it's an appropriate time to discuss how my best friend is kissing my boyfriend." Elena shook, anger pulsing through her.

"Your boyfriend needs our help. We shouldn't be here talking about this now. "Caroline moved to go past her but Elena stepped in her path.

"How long has it been going on?" Elena spitted out enraged.

"Elena please let's not do this now. Stefan is in there and he needs us." Caroline huffed annoyed.

"No he doesn't need us he needs me. His girlfriend, now tell me how long has this been going on?"

"A few weeks." Caroline answered.

"Have you two slept with each other?" Elena raised her voice as tears began pooling in her eyes.

"Elena ..." Caroline tried to reason but Elena interrupted.

"Tell me!" She screamed.

"Yes okay?!" Caroline screamed back in frustration.

Elena laughed again without humor and pulled at her hair as she paced backwards and forwards.

"You're pathetic. You just have to have everything that is mine. How does it feel Caroline? Just know you've been with all my sloppy seconds." Elena shouted.

"You have every right to be angry with me about Stefan. We didn't expect this to happen the way it did. Well it just happened. But you can't hold me accountable for what happened with Matt." Caroline reasoned.

"Oh really and what about Tyler?" Elena placed her hands on her hips and stared down Caroline.

"What about Tyler?" Caroline glanced towards his body that lay in a heap a few meters away from her.

"I fucked him too. So you really do have a thing for my men. I've showed them everything and loved them all the right way. They know how to fuck because of me." Elena smirked.

Caroline shook her head and tried to move again but this time Elena wrapped her hand around Caroline's upper arm. The brunette had enraged almost demented look in her as she clung to Caroline.

"Can't handle the truth, Care?" Elena mocked as Caroline glared down at her.

"Let go of my arm Elena." Caroline grunted as she felt her anger taking over her.

"Or what Caroline? Are you gonna go and cry to your gay daddy." Elena taunted.

Caroline snapped and before she knew it she punched Elena square in the jaw. The brunette collapsed with a thud on the floor. For a brief moment, Caroline wondered if she had just killed her best friend. But Elena's chest was moving in shallow breaths.

"Good shot. Wish I had done it." Katherine spoke as she moved towards Caroline with a box of matches.

Caroline watched as Katherine smirked at a passed out Elena before moving towards Tyler's lifeless body. She lit the match and Caroline watched as his body was engulfed in flames. For a second she stood lifeless just watching the flames. Watching as they burned or that remained of the man she had once loved. Did she do all of this? She did this didn't she? She was responsible for Tyler's death and for Stefan who was bitten and possibly dying.

"Don't blame yourself. It's not your fault." Katherine moved towards the blonde.

"It is. Tyler's dead and Stefan is going to ..." Caroline sobbed, she couldn't think of what was going to happen to him. It hurt too much to think of Stefan's fate. She couldn't imagine a world without him.

"You can't imagine living without him?" Katherine asked as she watched the blonde before her shake with tears.

"I'd do anything for him." Caroline sobbed out.

"Would you die for him?" Katherine asked.

Caroline glanced up at Katherine and looked at her with a puzzled look.

"What kind of a question is that?" She asked.

Katherine moved towards Elena and tilted her head as she looked disapprovingly at her doppelganger lying on the floor.

"It's a very relevant question. She wouldn't do it because she doesn't have the guts to sacrifice herself for his life. I know this because it's how I would feel. No life is worth the others. I'm just curious as to know if you would give up your life so he could live." Katherine asked eyebrows rose as she looked at Caroline.

"I would give up my life. Because it wouldn't be one life for the other it isn't a trade. He needs to live in order for me to live." Caroline answered firmly as she turned to walk towards the cabin.

"What if I told you that you could save his life by giving up yours?" Katherine asked.

Caroline stopped and turned.

"I'm listening." She answered.
