Chapter 38
Caroline lost track with the amount of times she cried. The tears would burn at the back of her throat then be released full force. Then her tears would dry up and she wouldn't be able to cry. It was an annoying pattern that refused to subside. She had half expected Katherine to complain. But she didn't say anything.
They drove on until the afternoon light faded. Caroline exhausted passed out. She didn't know how long she slept for but she awoke when she heard two voices arguing. Her eyes fluttered open and she noticed that Elena was now squished between her and Katherine. Arms bound. Tempers were flying.
"Look what you did, you woke her up you stupid idiot." Katherine scowled at Elena.
Elena glanced at Caroline. Anger was flared in those brown eyes of hers. They obviously hadn't resolved anything.
"I don't care." Elena muttered out angrily.
Katherine laughed.
"Where are we?" Caroline asked stretching in the small area now that Elena was with them.
"I tried asking that an hour ago." Elena grumbled.
"And I told you it doesn't concern you." Katherine sighed.
Caroline pulled out her phone. There were text messages from Stefan. Asking her what was wrong with her mom and if she needed help. It looked like Damon had gone with her plan. Least he was keeping up his end of the bargain. She would do the same. A part of her wanted so badly to text him and tell him what was going on but she knew she couldn't. He would risk it and come after her.
Caroline opened the trucks window and threw her phone out. It was the only way she would stop herself from making contact with him. Elena looked at her wide eyed but didn't say anything and Caroline was glad for it. She stared ahead numbly and watched the road.
Katherine said that Mikael would have answers. There would be a way to kill and stop Klaus but she wasn't stupid she knew her life was keeping him alive too. There would be no shortcuts. Death was going to embrace her like it should have done a year ago when she was in the car with Tyler and Matt. She should have died that night.
Suddenly the truck diverted and Caroline noticed where they were driving towards. A cemetery.
Katherine didn't say anything until she stopped outside an enclosed tomb. Ivy had grown around the shell so much so that Caroline had to really concentrate to see that it was a tomb.
Katherine opened her door and Caroline followed.
"Get out." Katherine snarled pulling Elena out.
"What the hell are we doing in a cemetery!?" Elena spat out.
"I could ask you the same, Katherine? I thought were supposed to be meeting Mikael?" Caroline asked confused.
"We are. This is his resting place." Katherine sighed shoving Elena towards the tomb.
Caroline watched as Katherine pulled the concrete slab of the tomb away to reveal an entrance gate. She snapped the chains easily and opened the gate. She gestured for Caroline and Elena to enter first. As they did, she entered and closed the gate. Caroline felt her heart race. It was eerie and cold and when she saw a coffin with no top lying on a concrete slab she felt her breath catch in her throat. Beside her Elena was shaking and her breathing was fast. Katherine looked composed but Caroline could see in her eyes the fear that lay within them.
Katherine moved towards the coffin and peered in. Mikael laid there, cold and white bound with metal chains. Katherine moved forward to unbind the chains but a hand shot out and gripped her neck. Elena screamed in terror as she watched a lifeless figure begin drinking on her doppelganger.
Caroline shell shocked, intervened and pulled Katherine away from the man. Katherine groaned and grasped at her neck. The figure in the coffin rose and smirked to himself unaware of the three females in the room.
"I know that blood. Katarina Petrova." He smiled deviously licking his lips.
Mikael climbed out the coffin and stretched. It was then that he noticed the three other occupants in the room with him. He made his way over towards them. He stopped and breathed in deeply.
"Two vampires and one human doppelganger." He breathed heavily as if he wasn't accustomed to breathing.
"Mikael ... We need your help." Katherine breathed out her throat hoarse.
"Shut up you insolent fool." He snarled at her.
His eyes scanned Elena's and then they fell on Caroline's. His cruel face turned whiter and he reached out in a blinding flash and grabbed her face between his two hands. Caroline tried to push him off but he held on tighter, penetrating her eyes with his own. He suddenly snarled and pushed Caroline away from him.
"She's the one that must die in order for Klaus to die." He murmured.
"Yes." Katherine whispered taking a step forward.
"A mistake on your part, I assume?" He rounded on Katherine.
"I did not know of my actions." Katherine breathed out.
"I searched hundreds of years for an answer. A way because of your foolishness. Your obsession with love and power." Mikael roared out angrily.
"I told you I only became aware of this recently. She's a newborn, she only eighteen years old." Katherine tried to explain but Mikael raged on.
"But you used the moonstone after I told the witches to tell you not to use it. Now he's got an army and a doppelganger supplying him with all the blood he needs. You told them you would keep the stone safe so that when the doppelganger appeared you would present it and tell me so I could kill him."
Caroline glanced at Katherine confused.
"What's he talking about Katherine?" She asked.
Katherine didn't say anything.
"She didn't tell you. In the 1920's I was chasing Klaus. I happened upon her gazing lovingly at some fool that was with my son. I threatened her with his life and demanded she tell me everything. From start to finish. We struck a deal but it seems she didn't stick to it." Mikael growled out.
"But you can kill him still?" Katherine asked.
"Of course I can. You brought the doppelganger to me. He's going to want her and when he learns I have her. I'll be able to kill him when he comes searching for her."
"She can't die." Caroline said suddenly.
Mikael turned his grey eyes on her.
"No but you will have to. Unless ..." Mikael said thoughtfully.
He looked at Katherine and then suddenly burst out laughing. It was a cold and cruel laugh. Katherine just stared at him coldly. After what seemed like ages he stopped laughing.
"Yes you will have to die." He chuckled at Caroline
"Then get a move on it. I have someone to save." Caroline said angrily.
An: Okay so let me know what you think. Will be awhile till the next update but working on getting this bad boy done. I'm sad to say that at this moment The Request is on hiatus. I'm not sure when or if I will complete it , but as I mentioned to some of my faithful reviewers I have different projects I'm working on and right now they are demanding my focus. I will most likely publish another Steroline story in the near future. I won't ever stop shipping them or writing stories about them. Thank you for all your continued support and for bearing with me.
