Hello, everyone. Thank you for those that left comments on my work. I have read them all and will try to integrate all your feedbacks to better improve my work.
Hello, I am trying to incorporate both Momonga into the story whilst also do some world-building that might bore people reading the main story story so I placed it here. Please tell me what you think about this story of writing about Momonga and world-building.
Here is the first chapter of Momonga's adventure in my version of Overlord.
Side Story Chapter One "Welcome to the Simulator"
Momonga sighed as he prepared for the servers to shut down and the world that he had called home more so than Earth ever could be would forever disappear with the end of YGGDRASIL.
Ten. Nine. Eight. Seven. Six. Five. Four. Three. Two. One.
The countdown finished. He waited for the curtains to fall on his fantasy world. Momonga waited for the automatic logout.
[0:00:00…]
[0:00:01…]
[0:00:02…]
[0:00:03…]
"...Hm?" Momonga muttered in confusion as he opened his eyes. "What's going on?"
He had not returned to his familiar room that was his studio in the real world. Momonga looked around to confirm that he was still in the Throne Room of the Great Underground Tomb of Nazarick, the Guild HQ of Ainz Ooal Gown in YGGDRASIL. That made no sense as he should have been forcibly logged out by the server shutdown.
Momonga looked at the in-game clock. [0:00:38] 38 seconds had already passed since the game servers should have shut down. The clock could not have gone wrong because of a system error. The game developers of YGGDRASIL, while known for their greediness to make cash off their players, was also known for their ability to keep promises. He highly doubted that they would make such a simple mistake as not shutting down the YGGDRASIL game server as they had previously announced.
Confused, Momonga looked around him, searching for any clues in the vicinity.
"Could it be that they delayed the server shutdown—?" Momonga wondered. Or had they extended play time as a form of compensation?
Although numerous reasons appeared in his mind, they were all far from the truth. However, the most likely reason was that an irresistible force had cropped up and extended the server shutdown time. If that was the case, the GMs would have made an announcement. Momonga hurriedly worked to reopen the message panel he had closed — and then he stopped halfway.
[Welcome to Chaldean Simulator, new recruit. You have been selected after several rounds of strict screening to admit you to join Finis Chaldea. Please join us in our noble goal of the Preservation of Human Order.]
"...What the hell is going on!?" Momonga shouted in a mix of confusion and disbelief.
There was no way in hell he could have read the right message. Chaldea was beyond him to be chosen as a potential recruit. It was a conglomerate that was amongst the wealthiest and influential organizations in the world. For someone of his background and qualifications to even be considered as a potential candidate was impossible. Only the most talented or experienced individuals had the chance of being accepted into Chaldea.
Ignoring the impossibility of being considered as a recruit for Chaldea, there was the matter of "Preservation of Human Order." Momonga didn't know what that actually meant, but for some reason his instincts told him that it was a very important matter.
"What's wrong, Momonga-sama?"
It was the first time he had heard that beautiful woman's voice. Momonga was startled, but he still kept searching for the source of the voice. When he found the one who had spoken the words just now, he was speechless. The person who had answered him was the NPC raising her head – Albedo.
"Is something wrong, Momonga-sama?" Albedo continued to ask in concern.
Soon, Albedo kept asking him questions. Momonga did not know how to respond. As it was, there were far too many things he did not understand, so his thought processes short-circuited.
"Forgive me." Momonga subconsciously replied as his mind raced to figure out what was exactly going on. His mind came empty as he could only stare dumbly at Albedo, who was standing by his side.
"Are you all right?"
Albedo's beautiful face drew close to Momonga's as she studied him. A faint fragrance entered his nostrils. The scent seemed to restore Momonga's ability to think, and his mind, which had been hitherto out of commission, slowly returned to normal.
"No… nothing is wrong… no, nothing." Momonga muttered as he replayed Albedo's questions in his mind.
Soon everything he had observed about Albedo was analyzed. Her movements, her speech patterns, her whole being radiated an undeniable humanity. Momonga knew that it was possible for an AI to replicate just about everything that a human could do. After all, he lived in the year 2138. Science and technology had come a long way since AIs to the point that they could be mistaken as human beings. The only problem, at least Momonga recalled, computers hadn't reached the stage where an AI to flawless act like a human in a financially feasible way. No game company would think about spending money to make every NPC react like a human as that would make them go bankrupt.
"Is something the matter?"
She was close to him now. Albedo was so close he could feel her gentle breaths. Her lovely face dimpled in an adorable way as she asked her question. Momonga, who had calmed himself after much effort, was in danger of being driven into panic again from her nearby face.
"Please give me a moment to think," Momonga replied as he returned his attention to User Interface.
[Please do not be alarmed if this Virtual Reality seems too realistic. Every NPC, interaction with your surroundings etc. are flawless rendition of the real world to better ensure your training in the VR simulation translated over to reality. Your training will the very best humanity has to offer as protectors of the Human Order you are ensuring the continuation of the human race.]
"Is there anything I can help you, Supreme One? Please, command me as you see fit." Albedo spoke in a manner that any employer would wish for such a loyal subordinate.
Momonga looked at Albedo. He compared what he had already seen and was seeing. There was no doubt about it. So far, he had seen nothing but a flawless replication of human behavior by an NPC. How he had not been logged out and returning to his room in the real world, but instead ended up in some sort of VR training simulator used for Chaldea's new recruits was beyond him.
Wait? If this is a VR training simulator used for Chaldea's new recruits then why is Albedo before me? Why am I still in the Great Tomb of Nazarick?! Momonga realized in shock. Calm down, Momonga! He shouted to himself, but that only got his emotions more out of control. His control over himself nearly snapped when a sudden wave of calmness washed over him. Hmphm, interesting. The emotion-dampening mechanism is really useful just now. I think I might had an emotional breakdown if it wasn't for my emotions being forcefully suppressed.
Taking a deep breath, Momonga suddenly remembered that YGGDRASIL's game developer was one of the countless subsidiary companies under the Chaldea conglomerate. It wouldn't be impossible to think that the game developers might be involved in developing a VR training program for their parent company. What likely happened was because of a computer error of some sort had led to him ending up in another, much more realistic VR world.
The part about how he had ended up in VR training simulator for Chaldea's new recruits greatly interested him as he wanted to compare how different it was from the shutdown YGGDRASIL. What he had seen was impressive already as the closest thing YGGDRASIL NPCs could come to conversations was with macroed responses to being addressed in a certain way. There was audio data for roars and cheering for players to download, but actually allowing an NPC to engage in conversation was an impossible task. They could also only accept simple orders.
He wanted to see how much more capable the new VR simulator he found himself was compared to YGGDRASIL.
Momonga dismissed Albedo with a wave of his hand, and disappointment flashed across her face as she retreated. His eyes turned from her body to the butler and the six maids, whose heads were still lowered.
"Sebas! Maids!" Momonga shouted.
"Yes!" Their voices chorused out as one, and then the butler and maids raised their heads.
"Approach the throne."
"Understood."
They responded as one, and then rose to their feet. After that, they proudly strode to the front of the throne before dropping to one knee and lowering their heads again.
Momonga tapped his finger on the throne as scrutinized Sebas and the maids. They had all acted in such a flawless manner that if he hadn't known beforehand then he might have mistaken them for real human beings instead of NPCs.
It seems the conspiracy theories regarding Chaldea might be true. Momonga noted as he recalled the common saying popular amongst conspiracy theorists that Chaldea had technology decades or even centuries ahead didn't seem too baseless as Sebas's and the maids' human-like behavior. I can only think it is possible with technology superior to what is 'currently' available on Earth to replicate Albedo, Sebas and the Pleiades Maids in such a realistic human-like behavior. What are the limits of this VR stimulator to replicate realistic human behavior?
"What may I do for, Supreme One?" Sebas asked with an earnest, sincere expression.
"You are going to personally protect me whilst the maids patrol the surrounding area." Momonga spoke in a superior, commanding attitude.
"Of course, Supreme One." Sebas and the maids responded.
The maids quickly left the Throne Room whilst Sebas came closer that he was close enough to protect Momonga while also not intruding in Momonga's personal space. He stood there like a vigilant guardian without so much as making his presence known.
Momonga turned to Albedo and said, "You are to coordinate our forces. Place Nazarick on the highest alert and prepare to activate all our defenses if they are needed!"
"How far should our scouts keep watch on, Supreme One?" Albedo replied.
"The scouts are to investigate no more than a kilometer from the Tomb. Stealth is more important than gathering information. I don't want anyone to know of our presence if that is possible. Combat is to be avoided at all costs unless given no other choice."
"Understood, Momonga-sama. I pass down your orders and have them fulfilled to the best of our ability." Albedo bowed her head and started to coordinate Nazarick's forces.
Momonga glanced once more at the busy Albedo and vigilant Sebas before returning to his UI. He pressed the UI so that he could re-read the previous messages. His attention was soon brought to several phrases that had made no sense to him such as "Preservation of Human Order." As if expecting his questions, Momonga found several links that someone like him might have about Chaldea.
[The true nature of Chaldea is not to make money for the shareholders like many other companies for our goal in a noble one. Many will be confused if they are to hear Chaldea's motto, "the Preservation of Human Order." This is referring to preventing all and any threats to humanity's continued survival such as temporal anomalies and other existential threats to humanity.]
"After reading this I can kind of understand where the conspiracy theories about Chaldea have come about. The amount of wealth and influence Chaldea has only added to the fuel of conspiracy theory." Momonga mused as he continued reading.
As Momonga read Chaldea's history, he started to doubt the contents of the writing. He got the feeling that he was reading one of the many conspiracy theories out there regarding Chaldea. How was he supposed to believe that the origins of Chaldea had been the result of its founder, Marisbury Animusphere, winning a battle royal to death involving reincarnated heroes of legend and myth for an omnipotent wishing device. The said wishing device being the Holy Grail and the later more incredulous claim of Chaldea's most prestigious moments known as the Human Order Incineration Incident, Remnant Order and Human Order Revision crisis.
"What was the writer smoking when he wrote this?" Momonga shook his head in disbelief.
He knew that he should stop reading anymore of this nonsense, but it was too interesting to give up as the content writer or developer either seriously believed the contents were real or did an extremely professional job in making it sound as if it was real. The more Momonga read the stronger the feeling that the read contents had been written by someone that truly believed in what Momonga read. The more Momonga read the more apparent the contents for a full-length history book, and one that had gone through some serious professional editing to make it one that a prestigious university might use as teaching material.
Momonga was so lost in the reading that he hadn't noticed how much time had passed until he started to mentally tire out from what he had read. He took a sigh and massaged his temples. The only thing that allowed him to grasp how much time had passed was the large amount of text that Momonga had read.
"Holy shit!" Momonga shouted in shock as he realized something for the first time.
"Supreme One, is there something wrong!?" Albedo and Sebas shouted in alarm.
"No, I apologize for the false alarm. Something just caught my attention." Momonga quickly replied, excusing his unexpected behavior that had gotten Sebas and Albedo looking like they would do anything to fix it. "Please return to your previous duties."
It was slightly shocking for Momonga to see Albedo's and Sebas's reactions. They were clearly genuinely concerned about his health and looked like they wanted to check his body in person to see there was nothing wrong, but their unbelievable loyalty to him compelled them to obey his orders without question.
Woah, I didn't think they were that hardcore about listening to my orders or about my safety. Momonga noted in awe but soon disappeared that thought as he turned to the matter that had alarmed. Incredible!? I was so overwhelmed by how realistically the graphics were rendered or the human-like behavior of the NPCs that I never noticed my sense of touch.
Momonga brought up a hand to his eyes and inspected it as if the sense of touch he had felt before hadn't been a figment of his imagination. He brought his fingers together and started to make all sorts of hand movements. To his surprise, he felt the sensations of his hand very well as if it was in real life.
He was still slightly suspicious that the feeling might be limited to his right hand. His attention was soon turned to the rest of his body, which he had been subconsciously ignoring. The sensation of touch was not limited to his hands and extended to the rest of his body.
The claim that Chaldea can replicate just everything about the real world flawlessly wasn't a joke. Momonga noted as recalled the current sensation of touch and the other realistic things that the new VR world he found himself had been able to replicate with an alarming high degree of accuracy. Well almost everything. He laughed as he scrutinized his fleshless and bony body. First thing, a human skeleton cannot have the same sense of touch as…
[Would you like to learn about the biology of a Lich?]
Momonga stopped thinking and stared at the new textbox that appeared before his vision. The last thing he had been expectingthe UI to respond to, much less with a message that in a way seemed to suggest the absurd notion that liches were real. He felt insulted and curious what sort of response awaited him if he agreed.
As if reading his mind, the textbox with the question disappeared and knowledge started to flow into Momonga's mind. It felt extremely weird to him at first. Knowledge flowing into his mind, but it felt more like he was recalling something that he had always known and only had been left unused all this time.
"Okay, this is taking the concept of 'paying attention to the little details' to the extremes…" Momonga muttered in shock as knowledge about the biology of a fictional creature started to become comparable to real medical textbooks of the human body. "Still, I have to hand it to whoever made up this biology of a Lich for putting the time and effort into making it so detailed that it might be mistaken for medical knowledge of a real living creature that can be found on Earth."
He started to become more curious about what else could be different in the new VR world he found himself in compared to the old YGGDRASIL.
Momonga navigated through the UI and went to the Skill Menu. He was surprised to find all of his Player Avatar's Skills greyed out as if he had never chosen them when his Avatar had leveled up. That was when he noticed several changes to the Skill Menu. Some were rather minor that Momonga could have never noticed them, but some were very noticeable such "Would you like to learn Tier # Magic?"
Without much thought, he pressed one of the new, noticeable options: "Would you like to learn Tier 0 Magic?"
It hit him again, but this time he had a moment to prepare himself as he had experienced it once already. Momonga was bombarded by knowledge, and he did his best to not become overwhelmed by the mental strain. An unknown amount of time passed as Momonga regained awareness of his surroundings.
"How did it go again…?" Momonga murmured as he tried to replicate some of the newfound knowledge he had received. "Magic Circuits… to activate them I need a mental trigger... What would be my mental trigger?"
He chuckled when he realized what he had been thinking. Momonga couldn't believe it. The new VR world he found himself in was so realistic in many ways to the real world that he had subconsciously mistaken he was in the real world. He had even mistaken what was obviously not real – magic and the supernatural didn't exist in the real world – as being part of the laws of reality.
"Oh, Supreme One, may I ask what has caused you to laugh?" Sebas couldn't help but ask.
Oh, shit! I completely forgot I was not alone. Momonga shouted to himself in shock. Now that I think about it. Sebas was rather diligent in duty as a bodyguard without so much as making a sound to make me aware of his presence. He returned his attention to Sebas. "A joke that I remembered caused me to laugh. Sebas, how much time has passed since I told you to guard me?"
"It has been fifty seconds, Supreme One." Sebas replied.
"Oh, it has been fifty… wait, seconds!?" Momonga shouted in shock as he stared at Sebas. "Has it really been fifty seconds?"
"Yes, about fifty seconds, Supreme One." Sebas nodded. "Is there something wrong?"
How is that possible… Momonga wanted to ask, but the serious look Sebas sported made speaking those words impossible. He looked at the in-game timer that appeared in his Heads-Up Display (HUD) to confirm Sebas's statement. This only made him become more alarmed. He could have sworn much more time had passed. At the minimum, an hour should have passed by Momonga's estimates.
Momonga quickly manipulated his UI and his instincts guided him to his Character Menu. The changes to the Character Menu were more visible than the one done to the Skill Menu. The usual stats from YGGDRASIL – HP, Mana, Physical Attack, Physical Defense, Agility, Magical Attack, Magical Defense, Resistance and Special Ability – had been replaced. What caught his eyes the most were how the new stats were placed into; three categories; Mind, Body and Soul.
"For some reason, I have a feeling that the new Intelligence Stat might have something to do with what seemed like at least an hour of time turning out to be less than a minute…" Momonga muttered as he started to read the description of all the new Stats before him.
What did everyone think of this chapter? Was it good, bad or anything in between?
What do you guys think? Is it good? Bad? Meh?
