As more and more people arrived at Atlantis, Team Blue along with various researchers from around the world tried to find a method to travel forward in time. They knew more or less how to reproduce Lafiel's original trip, but saw no way to control it.
They thought they had found a method involving portals, but the best they had managed was a few hours backwards in time. Forward time travel remained elusive.
Fleur had just got back from piloting one of the passenger ships that kept ferrying magicals, magical animals, parents, and even the odd muggle they recruited just for their skills to Atlantis. It was strange that something as wondrous as travel in Planar Space could become boring, but it had. When she thought of the centuries such travel would take without it, she still never lost her wonder. She knew the researchers still hoped to make travel via portal possible between the two planets, but so far it didn't work at distances farther that inside a solar system.
Fleur was surprised when all of Team Blue flew over to meet her. "Is their a problem?" she asked.
Hermione brightened, thought it felt forced to Fleur. She said, "We figured it out, but had a question for you. Do you feel like flying over to the pond?"
"Sure."
The pond they talked about was the pond outside of the a single large home of perhaps a few thousand square feet that Team Blue had made for themselves about twenty five miles from the capital. It was nothing special.
In fact they deliberately made it so. Magic was used for lighting, cooking, and temperature control, but everything else was done by hand. The roof was simple cobblestone and the whole design more resembled classic Japanese architecture than anything else.
The pond had been there before the house and was almost big enough to be called a lake. They flew down to a large hand made round picnic table that overlooked the pond. Luna and Daphne pulled out several baskets of food and drink from their own enchanted bags.
Fleur took a croissant and filled a small glass with wine while the others got situated, then she drank about a third of it before nibbling on the croissant.
Luna said absently, "It is not really bad news, just not what we really wanted."
"Please explain."
Harry took up the explanation. "First, Fleur we are fairly sure we can teach you to link like we do."
"How? Would I have to have my DNA changed like Astoria?"
"No," Lafiel answered, "It is not required."
Fleur blinked. "I don't understand."
Hermione said, "You were part of the memorial link with the elves and us. Most likely you can already link with us. We just haven't tried."
"May I try?" Fleur asked hopefully.
"Of course," Luna answered, even as her right hand clasped Fleur's left, while on the other side Daphne's left clasped her right, with the rest of the circle forming around them.
Luna's thoughts were heard from everyone. "I have the link now. I wish to create an image of a heard of crumple horned snorkacks. Perhaps they don't really exist, but we will see them now. Fleur, please just imagine lending your magic and your mind to this purpose."
All around them dozens and dozens of what seemed like overgrown rabbits ranged in color from white to desert sand and from each of them was a slightly bent unicorn horn sticking out of their heads. They chased each other all around, having the time of their lives and then they vanished.
Fleur thought, "That was Magnificent. Can I try?"
"Sure," replied Luna, "But first, what do you wish to do?"
"Personally, I'd like to play a game of Bajou. I can't believe we haven't built one of those yet."
Luna thought, "Imagine it then. Imagine it to every detail. It does not have to be a visible illusion. We are all part of the link and can experience it. I'm handing you the link."
Fleur imagined the ball on Hogwarts starting up and she was suddenly there, but also knew she was not. She imagined Lafiel as her opponent and suddenly knew it really was her, even as all the others helped with the realism. They were floating in the air, tethered by rope and trying to smack the batons out of each others hands. She put the thought of the what they were doing aside and just had fun, even if Lafiel won again.
When they came back to themselves they were all very stiff and quickly got up to move around. Several went inside to use the restroom while still others cast spells to chill their drinks and then consumed them.
Fleur was the first to speak, "That was great. Thanks. Does that mean I'm now a member of Team Blue, even without the hair?" She asked the last somewhat lightheartedly.
Harry asked, "Do you want to be?"
"Yes," she answered without hesitation.
Hermione said, "And now we come to the fun part that none of us much care for. First, Nadia can, with our help make each of us a copy of Blue Water, but without the soul magic. It will be updated based on the magic energy storage design we use on the Nautilus. When we are done, we think we can change Nadia's to be the same, allowing her to reabsorb the soul fragment in hers."
Fleur said, "That's nice, and I suppose if it helps Nadia, but I don't really need such a thing."
Daphne said dryly, "That's not the fun part. So far, our best plan to travel to the future is in the same crystalline coffin design Nadia was stuck in. Oh, we can do a nice group one, and because it is all of us together, well we can interact, and even have some limited interactions with the outside world. It will work. We are sure of it. We won't age while in it. We can even choose to have time pass more quickly from our perspective, if we want to."
"We have to do that?"
Lafiel said, "You certainly don't have to. I'm not wild about it either, but if it is the only way, I will do it."
Harry said, "We are not leaving you alone, right Hermione?"
"Of course not."
Fleur asked, "You want, or maybe need seven?"
Daphne said, "Ideally yes. Nadia's blue water sort of counted as a seventh, because of the soul magic, but that wouldn't work in any event. Nadia couldn't survive this again with part of her soul in her Blue Water. Also, this kind of thing is not something we can leave and come back to. We need your help, or possibly Victor's, though we would prefer you."
Nadia said, "I've also volunteered to remain out of it. Five is not as good as seven, but it is not that far off and I can do a lot of good out here."
"What about Nadia's father?" Fleur asked.
Nadia answered. "He has already refused. He wishes Nadia the best, and has promised to help lead this world as best as he can while he lives, but he will never go back in one of those crystal coffin things again. The elves have also refused. Harry asked Dobby, and the very idea was flat out rejected. They did, however, volunteer to make sure we woke on schedule. Not them specifically, but their entire race seems to have made that commitment."
Fleur asked, "When do you need an answer?"
Lafiel asked, "Would six months be enough time for you to decide? We could wait a bit more time after that, maybe a year or two total."
"What would we do? It just seems like it would be very scary."
Luna replied, "We could no doubt create a world of sorts with our minds and magic. The Arithmancy we are looking at allows one person to interact with us for up to about an hour a week. It can be a different person each time."
Fleur looked over at Harry.
Luna said, "I'm not sure how celibate poor Harry will be after all that time."
Lafiel and Hermione looked at Luna with a frown. Harry tried to make no sudden moves and shifted so he was part the way behind them.
Daphne smirked. "Luna does raise a point, but I'm sure we will work something out. We probably should make it so less apparent time passes. Maybe a day a week or something."
"That's still around one hundred and forty three years," noted Fleur.
Nadia responded, "You notice the time less than you think, and if you get too bored you can kind of ignore the passing of time. We don't really need to create runes or anything to do that. Having your own blue water will help. The worst part about when myself and my father were imprisoned was he didn't have his. It was destroyed long ago, and he couldn't be kept aware in any form. Needless to say I had a lot of experience at ignoring the passing of time."
Daphne said, "I suppose the Blue Water's can be used to store things we write or art we create. We can't really research anything to do with magic, since all things will appear possible inside."
Nadia responded. "Actually if we ask the Blue Water's can somewhat restrict the framework we have to work within so we are bound to the rules of the real world as they understand them. Since we plan to add Lafiel's database to them, that is a very great deal of understanding."
Hermione said, "We should definitely do that. If we get used to crazy things, I can't imagine adapting back to the real world will be easy."
Lafiel added, "Agreed. Obviously some things such as children and such are impossible, and we don't want an accident inside to result in an actual death, but beyond things like that..."
Luna pouted.
Nadia looked over at Luna with an amused expression on her face.
Daphne joined her in the expression a bit later, looking fondly at the slightly younger girl.
Fleur agreed a week later. She had one condition. She wanted to basically store the entire contents of several wizarding and muggle libraries with them.
Hermione immediately seconded that idea, and couldn't believe she hadn't thought of it before. Harry suggested TV and such, given that he always wanted to watch more of that. Hermione added that to the list.
It took them over a year and a massive amount of money, mostly from Harry's vault, to store what they thought of as their collection. They created hundreds of information storage crystals rather than attempt to store it all inside the Blue Waters. This would allow them to more easily donate the collection a thousand years later and the Blue Water's could easily access data from them. More could be added over time as well, which would give them something to look at and try to understand.
Their crystal resting spot, was, at the elves request placed in a side room of the memorial the elves had originally made. This meant that the protections that were created for their memorial also applied to where they would hibernate, for lack of a better word. They rested in with their heads next to each other, and each held the hands of the next. The magic shifted to conform to their bodies perfectly as they lay down and stopped moving. The order went Lafiel, Harry, Hermione, Fleur, Luna, Nadia, and Daphne was back next to Lafiel. The data crystals sat along the outside edge, with less than a fourth of the possible slots filled with their collection.
Nadia's Blue Water was repaired, her soul complete once more. The others had copies, both with the original Atlantian knowledge and a copy of the Abh scientific database. The original copy onboard Lafiel's ship was deleted. Each wore a simple one piece white outfit one that was wove around them with magic, keeping all but their hands, faces, and hair covered.
They were all awake until the crystal cover sealed them shut, a smile on all their faces, their magic already twining together.
Captain Nemo mused all that must happen now. Lafiel had put her ship under his command. The ship without the database was not a huge risk. Anti matter engines were not that complex despite Lafiel's order to protect it. The United Mankind had it, or would get it. The hard part was creating antimatter in the first place. One of the first things Nemo did was verify the defensive programs were active. He thought he might learn and teach how to make the Abh Neuro link. It wasn't a restricted technology.
One thing he did know was the magical world on Earth was not ready for that kind of power, not yet. He would do his part to get them there, and hopefully identify others that would carry on after them. To be fair, the original Atlantians were also not ready for that kind of power. He hoped this new crop of Atlantians wouldn't repeat their mistakes.
He pondered again the nature of racism. It had not been a problem on Atlantis before he had come to Earth, but then they were foolish and engineered humans into a servant class, then made even worse mistakes with elves. He supposed if there was such a thing as original sin, it would fallback to them, but racism is seldom about who began it. It is about the people who refuse to let it go.
It was actually one area the magical world on Earth got right. They weren't, at least from what he could tell, prejudiced against skin color. They just, for some crazy reason, believed that how many magicals in their history made some weird difference. Magic was not directly part of a magical persons genetic makeup. It affected DNA, but didn't originate in it. The one truth for magic is it frayed and became weaker when similar people had children. It was worse when close relatives had them, even if the weakening was a slow thing. It very rarely ever came into existence spontaneously. Usually either the mother or the father had some latent potential that grew, when combined with the potential of another. With magic one plus one did not necessarily equal two.
Simply put, a magical parent was far more likely to have a magical child, particularly if the magical parent was near the child. Women obviously had an advantage here, and two magical parents had a small advantage over only one, but that was it. No long history of magic in a family mattered much. The real advantage there was in family knowledge, or rarely, family specific gifts.
Poppy Pomfrey had insisted on having dinner with him. The woman was an amusing bother that he didn't quite have the heart to send away, even if he would normally have preferred the solitude of silence.
Two years in Team Blue started producing the equivalent of miniseries averaging a season every few years of real time. The first they actually made out of Harry's early years at Hogwarts, but they were of all types after that.
A particular favorite with kids was the series with Snorkacks. In the years that followed a favorite excuse for children was that a Snorkack stole my homework.
The news of the day was always at their fingertips, though often delayed a week or two until a crystal was updated. Often times people would stop by to visit in their limited time and update them as well. Perhaps the most important thing they did was simply lend their voices to issues of the day. They would seldom give their opinion right away, preferring to hear from other voices. Captain Nemo was a frequent voice of wisdom and when they finally sent a message outside it was often simply to back his existing position.
Lafiel and the others created all the memories that would be transferred into a Pensive. She carefully added everything she thought her people would need to know, but also limiting certain things when Luna or one of the others urged caution It took them ten years before the contents were finalized, but then there was the question of how to deliver it.
She knew her history fairly well. She also knew fairly well the prized positions in her family, yet it took her a long time to determine how to send the Pensive to her ancestors. In the end she remember the Empresses ancient desk, said to be from old Earth. They designed that desk, every detail accurate from her own memories. They they asked Captain Nemo to oversee its production and its eventually delivery.
Magic and purpose would be laced throughout it. Once it was placed on Earth where her memory recalled hearing it was from it should begin its journey. Hidden inside and protected to the limit of their ability was the Pensive containing help for her family and a bit more.
In it, she told their own story to this time, but much of that would remain sealed until after their return.
Much of the rest of the time they spent designing and testing the ships they hope they would one day build. Despite some objections they went mostly with Luna's ideas. It was going to be awesome. For now, It was all fake, but it was real to them, and this too, became a popular video series.
Author's Note: The next chapter, which at this time isn't fully complete, is planned to be the last chapter. If you haven't reviewed by now, then I would ask that you please do so.
