Chapter 1 The Avatar of Life
Korra smiled as she laid in bed since tomorrow she would finally get to train with Tenzin to learn airbending. While she wished it could have been at her home in the South Pole she was still glad she was gonna learn it regardless.
"Man I can't wait for tomorrow." Korra said before she fell asleep.
When she fell asleep however she found herself in a plain grass field.
"Where...Am I?" Korra asked confused.
"Where you need to be."
Korra turned and saw a man in white robes with a hood covering the top half of his face smiling at her.
"It's a pleasure to meet you Avatar Korra."
"Who are you?" Korra asked.
"I am Altair Kruger. And Like you I am an Avatar." Altair said.
"You were one of my past lives?" Korra asked.
"Not exactly. You see your not the only Avatar in the world." Altair said surprising her.
"I'm not?" Korra asked.
"No. Your the Avatar of your lands. I am an Avatar thats much different. I am the Third Avatar of Life. I draw my power from everything that represents life in this world. Or at least I used to." Altair said.
"Used to?" Korra asked.
"I'm dead of course. And I have passed on my power to my son. And I need you to find him. The world will be facing a crisis soon. And you will not be enough to stop it. You must find my son and the other Avatars of old." Altair said before slowly vanishing.
"Wait where do I find him? Is he in one of the four nations?" Korra asked.
"No...The world is much larger than you know. You'll find him in San Fransisco." Altair said before vanishing.
Korra suddenly woke up seeing it was morning before she narrowed her eyes before getting out of bed.
Arriving in the dining hall she found Tenzin and Pema talking.
"Ah Korra. Ready to begin your training today?" Tenzin asked.
"Actually I have a question if you don't mind." Korra said.
"Oh? And whats that?" Tenzin asked taking a drink.
"Have you ever heard of something called the Avatars of Old?" Korra asked making him drop his drink in shock.
"Tenzin?" Pema asked concerned.
"Korra, I need to know where you heard that from." Tenzin said.
"Last night I had a vision about some guy named Altair Kruger. Called himself the Third Avatar of Life. Tenzin, whats going on? I thought I was the only Avatar." Korra said completely confused.
"In these lands yes. You bring balance to them. But the Avatars of old are something much, much older and more power. Follow me." Tenzin said leading her away.
Arriving in the study room he pulled out a book.
"The Avatars of old are the Guardians of Earth. The Human race is a million years old. And during the beginning there was chaos as mankind had always constantly fought one another for petty and selfish reasons. Then came the original Avatars. Each of them represented an essential aspect of our existence and drew their powers from what they represented. Using powers the likes of which had never been seen before they brought forth a great era of peace and unity." Tenzin said.
"If the Human race is a million years old how come theres only Three generations?" Korra asked.
"Because these Avatars live far longer. The first generation lived for half a million years before they passed on their powers to thier children since their Avatar powers can only be transferred from parent to child where yours is reincarnated into the next nation. Drago Kruger was the very first Avatar of Life and he brought order and peace to Earth during his long reign as the first Avatar of Life. When his time came he transferred his power to his son. Paarthurnax Kruger who was only 18 when he became the next Avatar." Tenzin said.
"Did he do as good as his father?" Korra asked.
"Actually he did even better. He led the Human race into an era of spiritual enlightenment connecting the Earth and the Spirit world to maintain a perfect balance. Sadly however he only lived half as long as his father before transferring his powers to his son Altair Kruger. And Altair led the Earth to an even greater era of Peace then both his father and Grandfather combined. However one day he and the other Avatars vanished 30,000 years ago." Tenzin said.
"You mean like Aang?" Korra asked.
"No my father vanished when he left the air temple since at the time he couldn't handle the pressure of being the next Avatar. They vanished suddenly and without warning. And the peace they had created fell apart and Humanity began to fight one another again for 30,000 years. There were rumors of them being spotted over the years across the world. The Rumor was they were looking for something that had to do with the original generation of Avatars but no one knew what that was." Tenzin said.
"How many other Avatars are there?" Korra asked.
"At least over a hundred. The strongest however were known as the Avatars of Life, Death and Courage. These three were the strongest of every generation. If Altair contacted you then that must mean..." Tenzin tried to say.
"He's dead...He told me so. Said to look for his son." Korra said making him frown.
"I see. So a new generation is born then. Did he say where to find him?" Tenzin asked.
"He said someplace called...San Fransisco. I have no idea where that is though." Korra said.
"I do." Tenzin said shocking her. "It's not part of the four nations. The world is much larger than you realize. The four nations are a small part in a much larger world." Tenzin said.
"Really? So...Where is this place?" Korra asked.
"On the continent known as North America." Tenzin said.
Next day
Oogi flew Korra, Tenzin and his family over the sea.
"I don't understand. If theres more to the world how come no one has ever come here?" Korra asked.
"Back then the four nations were so dangerous no one bothered to come out of caution due to the hundred year war. You've seen the amount of technology in Republic City." Tenzin said making her scoff in amusement.
"Yeah it's pretty impressive." Korra said making him chuckle in amusement. "What?" Korra asked curious.
"Korra...Thats nothing compared to what we're about to see." Tenzin said as they passed some clouds before they arrived in San Fransisco.
The whole place was highly advanced with technology that made everything In Republic City look like child's play.
"Whoa." Korra said seeing floating screens and holograms that looked so real. "How is Republic City not this advanced?" Korra asked.
"Myself and the council believed it simply wasn't ready to handle technology this advanced. About 10 years ago while you were training with my mother I came here to ask for some help since the Triple Threats had poisoned the city's food supply when we refused to meet their demands of a large percent of Republic City's finances. They freely offered twice as much as we lost." Tenzin said before they arrived on a landing platform.
"Whoa." Korra said seeing the incredibly advanced building. "What is this place?" Korra asked.
"Welcome to Atlas. It's a Private military organization with the highest level of technology." Tenzin said. (From Call of Duty Advanced warfare)
Entering the building they saw various people both scientists and soldiers moving around before Korra's eyes landed on something and widened.
"Uh Tenzin?" Korra said.
"Yes?" Tenzin said before he saw what she was looking at before they saw a holographic image of Altair in the center of the room. "Hmm. Clearly Altair and the other Avatars must have returned at some point. Probably responsible for all of this." Tenzin said.
"And you would be right."
The group turned and saw a man with white skin brown hair and brown eyes in an expensive suit walking to them.
"Irons." Tenzin said shaking his hand.
"Tenzin good to see you again." Irons said. (Irons from Call of duty advanced warfare)
"Who's he?" Korra asked.
"His name is Johnathan Irons. He runs Atlas." Tenzin said.
"So this is the Avatar from your lands you spoke of." Irons said making her smile.
"Yup thats me." Korra said before getting serious.
"Anyway this isn't a social visit. We're looking for someone." Tenzin said.
"Oh? And just who would that be?" Irons asked.
"We're looking for Altair's son." Korra said making him raise an eyebrow.
"And how do you know he has a son?" Irons asked.
"He told me in a dream last night. Said the world would be facing a crisis soon and to find him." Korra said making him frown.
"I'm unaware if he had any kids but I assure you there is no Fourth Avatar of Life here." Irons said.
"But he said he was in San Fransisco." Korra said.
"And he might be. But I don't know where he is. My troops can help you of course but If there was one of the Avatars of Old here we would know." Irons said.
"Hey Dad."
Irons turned and saw his son William.
"Let me introduce my son William. He'll help you find who your looking for." Irons said.
"We appreciate the help." Korra said as they walked away before Irons frowned before looking at his son.
"Whats going on?" William asked.
"Make sure they don't find him." Irons said making him nod before walking with them.
Exploring the city Korra was amazed by the level of technology.
"Whats with you don't you have technology like this?" Will asked amused.
"Not even close. How did you do all this?" Korra asked making him chuckle.
"Altair and the Avatars came back about 200 years ago and started bringing the world back together. This is the result." Will said.
"Why did they leave exactly?" Korra asked.
"No one knows really. Most say he and the other Avatars were looking for something. Something to do with the first generation." Will said.
"Tenzin said the same thing." Korra said.
"Whatever they were looking for they either found it or gave up." Will said.
As they were talking Jinora was looking at another Statue of Altair made of metal making her smile before she overheard some of the troops.
"Irons should have just sent them packing. What if they do find him in the labs?" A soldier known as Joker said making her frown.
"They won't. We're just gonna lead them in circles until they give up. They won't find him." A solider known as Gideon said. (Both from Call of duty Advanced warfare)
Jinora frowned at this before she ran to Korra.
"Korra, we have a problem." Jinora said.
"What is it?" Korra asked.
"These guys aren't actually helping us. Their leading us in circles. I overheard two of them talking. Altair's son is at Atlas. They just don't want us to find him." Jinora said making her frown.
Later
"You lied to us. You knew Altair's son was here. What are you holding him hostage?" Korra asked glaring at Irons who raised an eyebrow before looking at his son.
"Don't look at me. Joker's the one who opened his fat mouth." Will said.
"How was I supposed to know a kid was listening to us?" Joker asked.
"Ok...Look. Yes his son is here but we're not holding him against his will or holding him hostage. His name is Sean Ashburn Kruger. He's a scientist here. Most of the tech you see here. He made it." Irons said.
"So why won't you let us talk to him?" Korra asked.
"Look...I think it's best you just talk with him yourself. You'll see why I didn't want you to see him." Irons said leading her away.
Korra and Irons arrived at the top floor.
"He's on the room to the right." Irons said.
"Aren't you coming?" Korra asked.
"No. I think it's best if you two talk alone." Irons said going back down.
Korra walked in the room where Altair's son was in seeing him working on something.
He was dressed in black leather jeans with black combat boots. A black shirt with a skull in the center while wearing a black leather jacket with three spikes on each shoulder and spiked gloved while also having a hood over his head and black leather face mask. (Basically Kakashi's mask)
"Sean Ashburn Kruger?" Korra asked making him look up before turning to face her.
"Do I know you?" Sean asked.
"No. I was sent to find you by your father." Korra said.
"Really? And what did he say?" Sean asked.
"He said the world needs the Avatars again. Said theres a crisis coming. So he sent me to find you." Korra said.
"Well...I hate to disappoint you but you came for nothing. I'm not going anywhere." Sean said turning back to what he was working on shocking her.
"What? You have to! Your an Avatar just like me!" Korra said.
"We are nothing alike. And besides why should I fight for humanity anymore when they always nearly destroy themselves." Sean said continuing his work.
"Look. I don't know what your problem is but you should be old enough to know the world needs the Avatars. Your like what? 200 years old or something?" Korra asked.
"I'm 18 dumbass." Sean said facing her again.
"Excuse me!" Korra yelled offended.
"You heard me. Why should I risk my neck for people who will one day just try to start wars or kill innocents. What you think you can change the world by being an Avatar? That title might have meant something in the beginning of humanities history but today it means nothing." Sean said shocking her.
"Look I don't know what the hell happened to you to make you give up on everyone but you have a responsibility to the human race..." Korra tried to say.
"Oh this is rich. My old man didn't even tell you. Did he tell you that he was murdered by people he trusted?" Sean said shocking her. "Did he tell you that my mother was also killed right in front of me like he was. Or was he hoping I would forget? Did I forget what happened to me 15 years ago after he was killed by those he trusted!" Sean yelled taking off his hood and mask and upper clothes. "I HAVEN'T!" Sean roared as Korra looked in shock.
Sean's entire upper body was covered in scars and wounds that were clearly old. His face had its share as well seeing three claw marks on his left eye that went down to his neck and an X formation scar on his right. He also had white skin brown hair and forest green eyes. (Sora don't say anything)
"You have no right to come here thinking you can tell me what my responsibilities are. You have no idea what it's like to Suffer. Never lost a single member of your family and always had a good life from the very beginning! Well I didn't! 15 years ago THIS happened to me by the people I looked up to and Trusted with my life! Being the Avatar means nothing! NOW GET THE HELL OUT OF MY LAB!" Sean yelled throwing a glass at her as she bolted and shut the door as the glass shattered on impact.
Korra fell to the ground as she started crying holding her face. Never in her whole life had she seen or heard about something so cruel. Sure Katara told her about the horrors of war and all but this...This was beyond cruel.
Tenzin and the others waited patiently before the Elevator opened up and Korra came out looking depressed.
"Korra?" Tenzin asked looking concerned before she shook her head.
"I told you there was no Avatar of Life here." Irons said.
"The hell happened?" Korra asked making him sigh before walking to a table and poured out a drink.
"I thought talking about it would get easier but some pains never go away. 15 years ago Altair and his wife were brutally murdered by three people they trusted with their lives. When Altair hadn't been seen in a couple days we went to his home and found them. Sean was barley alive when we found him. His faith was completely shattered. I took him in and raised him. William always looked after him after that and they bonded real quick." Irons said.
"What about the other Avatars?" Tenzin asked.
"The entire Third Generation was killed off by these people." Gideon said shocking them. "They knew all their strengths and weaknesses. What they didn't know was they had already transferred all of their powers to their children. Every Avatar right now is under military protection. All of them are either teenagers or young adults." Gideon said.
"And the ones who killed them?" Tenzin asked.
"We haven't seen or heard about them since. We know they're up to something but all we can do is wait. Sean and every other Avatar...They've given up faith in humanity. All we can do is wait and hope one day they'll have it restored." Irons said.
"I see." Tenzin said as Korra looked down.
"I don't know what Altair tried to warn you about but clearly he doesn't understand the damage his son is in." Irons said making her sigh.
"I feel like I only made things worse for him." Korra said.
"I'm sure you were just doing what you thought was right. But regardless he's not going anywhere." Irons said.
"I guess we'll just head back then." Tenzin said.
"I would recommend waiting till morning. Theres gonna be a huge storm and you'll get caught in it. I'll have my men show you to your temporary rooms." Irons said.
"Thank you." Tenzin said.
Later at night
Korra sat on a bed in her room before sighing.
The image of Sean's scarred body and face was still fresh in her mind. She had never seen someone in such a condition in her entire life. Never even realized people could be so cruel to an innocent child.
Thats when someone knocked on her door making her sigh before going to answer it.
"Tenzin I'm really not..." Korra said as she opened it before she saw Sean on the other side. "Sean?" Korra said surprised.
"Hey. I uh...Came to apologize for what happened earlier. I was already in a bad mood and I took it out on you and that wasn't fair and you didn't deserve that." Sean said.
"Well, you were right I didn't have the right to tell you what to do." Korra said.
"Why don't we go for a little walk. I think I owe you that." Sean said making her smile lightly.
"Sure." Korra said before they left.
Walking the streets Korra admired the bright neon lights.
"It's beautiful." Korra said making him chuckle.
"What you don't have high tech where your from?" Sean asked.
"Not even close. The closest we have to high level tech are air ships." Korra said.
"Yikes. Sounds like a nightmare. I couldn't go two days without something high tech." Sean said making her giggle before frowning.
"So...What exactly happened 15 years ago?" Korra asked making him sigh.
"I was three years old when it happened. I knew these people my whole life back then. I trusted them and looked up to them. I wanted to be exactly like them. Thats when they killed my parents right in front of me. I was shocked beyond words. They thought he still had the Avatar powers inside him and tried to take it but he transferred them to me when I was born. They were furious and took it out on me. Every scar you saw before was from them." Sean said making her look down.
"I'm so sorry." Korra said.
"I lost my faith that day. I asked myself how can I have Faith in humanity if those you trust the most could do something like that to those who trusted them with their lives. Me and the other Avatars lost all our faith. I got the worst of their punishments compared to the others." Sean said.
"It must have been hard losing your parents like that." Korra said.
"It was but I still had a good life growing up. Irons took me in since he and my father were close. Will treated me like a younger brother since he's five years older than me. Including the Annoy the younger sibling crap." Sean said making her giggle. "I mostly spent my time in the labs working on advancing technology and upgrading myself." Sean said confusing her.
"What do you mean by that?" Korra asked before he held out his right fist before three bone claws came out. "Ok thats both cool and disgusting." Korra said making him chuckle.
"Imagine if they were metal." Sean said.
"Then it wouldn't be disgusting." Korra said making him laugh before they walked by a bowling alley making him smirk.
"Care to have some fun?" Sean asked making her grin.
Minutes later
Korra rolled the ball before getting a second strike making her cheer while Sean chuckled as the pins vanished than reappeared in perfect formation.
"And you've never played this game before?" Sean asked getting his ball.
"What can I say? I'm just that good." Korra bragged making him scoff in amusement before rolling the ball before getting a strike. "So how did this country get so advanced so quickly?" Korra asked.
"When my father and the other Avatars returned they helped unite the entire world minus where your from. Doing so helped advance technology by sharing information, data and theories. That in turn helped advance humanities technology by a few centuries." Sean said as she rolled the ball before getting another strike.
"So the whole world is like this now?" Korra asked.
"Mostly. There are some parts of the world that don't have technology but do accept medical aid. They don't believe in technology which is understandable since you shouldn't force it on them." Sean said grabbing his ball before rolling it making it strike down all the pins again. "So what kind of Avatar are you exactly?" Sean asked.
"Well, I can use the four elements of bending. Water, Earth and fire. I'm having a little trouble with airbending though." Korra said sheepishly.
"You mean this?" Sean asked before he was doing airbending on his ball before using it to get another strike which shocked her.
"Wha...You can use bending?" Korra asked in shock making him chuckle.
"Maybe you don't understand exactly how I draw my powers. My powers come from everything that represents life. Water, Earth, Fire and Air all represent life as well and thats not even close to where half of my powers come from." Sean said.
"Wow. So...How do you use airbending? I've been trying my whole life to do it but I can't for some reason." Korra said.
"I focus on what I want to protect. In this case my friends and family. Hell Irons is at least a hundred years old and..." Sean said.
"Wait what? How can he be a hundred years old?" Korra asked in shock.
"You do know the Avatars can extend the natural lifespan of others for a long time right? My dad made him partially immortal. He ages far slower." Sean said.
"Wow. I'm starting to get really jealous of your kind of Avatars. All I can do is use the four elements and some other things." Korra said.
"Not even close." Sean said confusing her. "Every being on the planet is capable of many things both in science and magic. And one day you'll unlock a great amount of potential inside you." Sean said making her smile at the praise.
Later
"I had a lot of fun tonight." Korra said as he walked her back to her room.
"I'm glad you thought so. This is a typical day for me most of the time. Work and then Relax." Sean said before they saw Tenzin knocking on Korra's door.
"Tenzin?" Korra asked making him face them.
"What are you two doing out?" Tenzin asked.
"Just apologizing for our earlier meeting and having some fun in the city." Sean said making Korra smile.
"So I'll see you tomorrow?" Korra asked.
"Of course." Sean said before he walked away.
"So what happened?" Tenzin asked.
"Well...I understand more about him now. And now I see why he's not so keen on taking his responsibilities. I'm hoping that'll change soon." Korra said.
Next morning
Tenzin and his family were about to get on Oogi as Sean and the others talked with Tenzin and Korra.
"Are you sure you won't come with us?" Korra asked.
"Sorry Korra. I'm just not ready. Still if you ever wanna come back your always welcome here. You certainly make things interesting." Sean said making her smile before pulling him into a hug.
"Take care." Korra said before she and Tenzin's family got on Oogi before flying away.
"So." Will said leaning on his brother.
"So what?" Sean asked suspicious of what he was doing.
"Does my little brother have a crush?" Will asked making him freeze.
"Oh Kruger's got a crush on a girl he's just met." Joker teased.
"This should be fun." Gideon said making him growl
"IT IS NOT LIKE THAT YOU FUCKHEADS!" Sean yelled making Will and the others laugh while Irons chuckled before looking up into the sky.
'I think I know exactly why you really brought her here old friend.' Irons thought.
