Chapter 36 Haunted
It's been a week since Korra's pregnancy was announced to the world and since Perseus was killed after getting so badly insulted by so many people in the South.
Right now Sean and Korra were in their home in the South asleep with Sean holding her close.
Thats when he slowly began to wake up finding her in his arms making him smile as he kissed her forehead making her smile softly in her sleep before he got out without waking her.
Walking around the palace however Sean saw a locked door making him raise an eyebrow before he walked to it before crushing the lock on it before entering it.
Only to find the place had some strange spiritual stuff inside it.
"What a fucking surprise." Sean said.
Walking to the very end of the room Sean found a scroll before opening it up showing himself and Vaatu making him narrow his eyes.
"He's not coming back you know." Tonrraq said making him face him.
"I know. Crushing your neck will do that. I guess it's just hard to accept the fact that he's finally gone after all these years." Sean said.
"Yeah. But he got what he deserved after all these years of lying to everyone." Tonraq said about to leave.
"Hold up. I got a question." Sean said.
"About what?" Tonraq asked.
"The Day Unalaq showed up here you said there was a reason you kept me and Korra down here and that Unalaq had something to do with it." Sean said making him sigh.
"Look. It's ancient history. We knew he had something to do with it since the timing was too coincidental. Add to the fact some other things happened during that incident we knew he had to be involved." Tonraq said.
"What exactly happened? Did Unalaq send someone to kill me?" Sean asked.
"We're not sure to be honest. Just know it's ancient history and Unalaq is finally gone." Tonraq said.
"I guess." Sean said before one of the troops ran to them.
"Chief Tonraq! Theres some strange mechanical monster outside the city heading towards us!"
"Fuck. It must be Pandora's guardian from the temple. I'll get Luke and the others and we'll handle this." Sean said running off.
Later
The Guardian of Pandora's temple marched through the the snow fields outside the city in order to get there.
Only for a Thor's hammer to hit it making it roar as part of its armor was broken.
Sean was quick to attack it with the Gauntlet of Zeus smashing it into the monster a few times before jumping away as it tried to smash him.
Turok quickly turned into a Rhino before charging right into it straight into a wall making it roar.
"How the hell did this thing get here anyway?" Luke asked curious.
"We'll figure that out later." Sean said charging at it before it slammed its fists on the ground hard making the ground launch Sean over a cliff.
"Well shit." Reznov said as they charged right at it.
Sean groaned as he rubbed his head about to head back.
"Getting sloppy now are we?"
Sean widened his eyes as he turned around seeing...
"Unalaq." Sean said seeing him with his smug grin on his face.
"You remember me. I'm flattered." Unalaq said running off.
"GET BACK HERE!" Sean yelled chasing him as Unalaq used water bending to speed away before Sean threw his axe at him but he dodged easily which shocked him before a massive storm picked up making him glare.
"Too slow, Kruger. You always were." Unalaq said above him.
"How the hell are you alive?" Sean asked.
"Now where is the fun in telling you?" Unalaq asked making him growl as he chased him against before trying to slash him but he dodged perfectly making him growl as they landed and he panted in anger.
"Already out of breath? Don't tell me you've gotten soft since you sealed away Vaatu forever? Save your energy. You're going to need it. I sent the Guardian of Pandora only to get your attention." Unalaq said.
"What are you up to now?" Sean asked.
"I believe you know about seismic crystals. Very powerful and unpredictable. I've placed three of them in the Southern water tribe and they will go off in three hours. And when they do it will wipe out the Tribe for good. If I cannot rule over them. Then Neither will Tonraq." Unalaq said.
"Not if I kill you again!" Sean yelled slashing him but he dodged and hit a wall making it come down and Unalaq was nowhere in sight.
Sean growled in rage before placing his blades on his back.
"Um...Sorry to interrupt your little nature walk...BUT WHERE WERE YOU!" Turok yelled at his brother who jumped in surprise. "We had to take that monster down by ourselves in this storm and..." Turok tried to say before he started sneezing and turned into a small elephant as he did. "Great...Now I got a cold." Turok said annoyed.
"Unalaq...He's back." Sean said shocking them.
"What? You can't be serious you crushed his neck. No one could survive that." Reznov said.
"I saw and fought him before you guys showed up. And now he wants payback." Sean said.
"How?" Julia asked.
"He's gonna unleash a massive earthquake using seismic crystals to wipe out the tribe. We gotta find them in three hours before they go off." Sean said.
"I don't get it. The dude had his throat crushed. Who lives through something like that?" Reznov asked.
"Apparently he does. It's not the first time someone came back from the dead." Julia said.
"Yeah plus he's pretty..." Turok tried to say before he started sneezing and turned into a few animals before it stopped. "Slippery." Turok said wiping his nose.
"We'll worry about how he came back later. Right now, all that matters is how we stop him. Reznov, Julia and Turok you search the city. Luke, We're going after Unalaq." Sean said.
Later
Sean and Luke were still outside the city looking for Unalaq as the storm picked up.
"Relax Sean. We'll find him and make sure he stays dead." Luke said.
"I hope so." Sean said before his radio went off.
"Kruger, I'm at the palace." Reznov said.
"Any sign of the crystal?" Sean asked.
"Man I can't find or sense anything. Theres nothing here and this is a perfect spot for placing one." Reznov said looking around.
"Nothing in the center of the city either. I don't sense anything and those crystals are real difficult to hide from people like us." Julia said.
"I'm at the docks and I got nothing." Turok said before he started sneezing and turned into animals.
"Those crystals are there. Keep searching." Sean said hanging up. "They should have found those crystals." Sean said.
"Maybe Unalaq hasn't actually placed them yet and he's just screwing with us. He's done that before." Luke said.
"Maybe." Sean said before looking up and narrowed his eyes before dashing off.
"HEY!" Luke yelled following him.
Sean had a large lead before he came face to face with Unalaq.
"I'm disappointed Kruger. I expected the son of a monster to be able to stop me already. Or have you gotten soft in these last two months?" Unalaq mocked making him growl before equipping the Nemean Cestus and tried punching him but he dodged easily before water bending him in the face making him skid back a little while Sean growled.
"I don't know how you came back from the dead. But I killed you once and I'll kill you again!" Sean said.
"You got lucky last time since I thought for certain with your injuries you wouldn't be able to move. I won't make the same mistake again." Unalaq said water bending him again making him growl.
"Sean!" Luke yelled as Unalaq ran.
"Luke, stop him!" Sean yelled as Unalaq ran right past Luke who looked around before Sean ran next to him and growled.
Thats when Sean grabbed him by the arm.
"HEY!" Luke yelled.
"The fuck was that! Unalaq ran right by you! How could you let him get away?" Sean asked as Luke got out of his grasp.
"The hell are you talking about? There was no one there." Luke said making him widen his eyes.
"What do you mean no one there? I saw him run right past you." Sean said.
"Sean...I didn't see anyone or hear anything run past me." Luke said making him narrow his eyes.
Later
Everyone was meeting back up at the palace as Turok flew in before sneezing and turned into a pig making him land hard before turning human as Jinora looked at him.
"I looked everywhere. I think Unalaq sent us on a..." Turok tried to say before sneezing a few time turning into animals before turning into a goose.
"Wile Goose chase?" Julia asked amused making him growl.
"Can I please lie down?" Turok asked.
"I've used an old spell to scan the entire city. There are no crystals in the place." Reznov said.
"Meaning Unalaq is just up to his old tricks." Tonraq said.
"I'm not so sure about that." Luke said walking to them.
"What do you mean? Wheres Sean?" Tenzin asked.
"He's...Gone off on his own to look for Unalaq." Luke said.
"Why? What happened?" Turok asked.
"I don't like the sounds of this." Mimir said as Sean left him behind.
"He said he saw and fought Unalaq. Said he ran right past me...But I didn't see or hear anything. Even in this storm I would know if something or someone ran right past me. Something is wrong with him." Luke said.
"What? You think he's snapped?" Reznov asked crossing his arms.
"No...But something is going on with him. He wouldn't make up seeing the guy he hates the most. But it's like only he can see him. I know he's not insane but something is up." Luke said.
"Where did he say he was going?" Korra asked.
Later
Sean arrived at the spirit portal where what was left of Unalaq's old camp remained.
Arriving at the camp he looked around before arriving in Unalaq's tent seeing it in tears before seeing his meditation circle before examining it.
Thats when he heard the tarp flap making him snarl before rushing outside.
"So...here we are again. Your greatest triumph." Unalaq said but Sean couldn't see him.
"Fucking show yourself you piece of shit!" Sean yelled before seeing him on top of a tent.
"Relax, Kruger. I'm not going anywhere." Unalaq said making him growl before jumping to him but he was gone before the tent fell down and the ropes pulled down a communication tower making it nearly fall on him as Sean dodged.
"Fuck." Sean said.
"Brings back memories, doesn't it?" Unalaq asked.
"All I remember is how much I fucking hated you!" Sean yelled.
"What I recall is that you had plenty of chances to defeat me in the past...But didn't take them. This time however the fight will be in my favor." Unalaq said appearing behind him before waterbending him away making him grunt. "Pity your friends are of no use to you." Unalaq said.
"Why couldn't Luke see you?" Sean asked.
"I believe you are familiar with cloaking spells. I've stepped up my game unlike you. For once you haven't even laid a hit on me." Unalaq said.
"I'm familiar with all your deception. Thats why you're not going to get away with this." Sean said before attacking him but he dodged all his strikes with ease before vanishing making him growl getting tired of this.
"Our time apart may have made you soft, But it's only made me stronger." Unalaq said using water bending to attack him from all sides making him yell as his armor broke apart.
"You won't stop me. I've beaten you dozens of times without even trying. And If I fail...The others will stop you." Sean said.
"Your friends won't find the crystals, And they can't see me. They can't see the truth, Kruger, Even when it's right in front of them." Unalaq said blasting him again before the water turned to sharp ice and stabbed him in several places making Sean groan in pain.
"I've stopped you before and I will again!" Sean yelled slamming his axe down creating large Ice spikes in the ground which he dodged easily.
"Kruger, If you've stopped me, Then why am I still here?" Unalaq asked making him roar as he tried to hit him but he kept dodging before he hit him back making him skid on the ground. "You can't even touch me this time around." Unalaq said.
Sean growled as he tried to hit him with his chains but he kept dodging easily before striking him down making him groan.
"How can you save the Tribe, Kruger, When you can't even save yourself?" Unalaq asked striking him down hard making him groan.
Sean kept trying to fight him but it was like he knew what he was going to do before he even did it.
Thats when the others arrived seeing him on the ground bleeding.
"Sean!" Tonraq said rushing to him.
"What are you doing here? You're supposed to be finding the crystals." Sean said panting.
"I don't think there are any crystals, Kruger. We looked everywhere and used old spells to locate them. We came up empty." Reznov said.
"Well, he's got to be cloaking them, just like he's cloaking himself. Thats why you couldn't see him." Sean said.
"Sean that doesn't make any sense. If I can't see him how come you can?" Luke asked making him widen his eyes.
"The fuck are you trying to say?" Sean asked.
"Sean, are you sure you really sure saw Unalaq?" Tonraq asked.
"Saw him? I fought him! You think I injured myself!" Sean asked.
"Dude, I can't sense or smell anyone else but everyone here. And I don't smell him. Thats not a scent you forget and even cloaking magic has it's limits." Turok said.
"I don't have time for this. I have to find those crystals." Sean said about to leave.
"There are no crystals. There is no Unalaq!" Reznov said.
"I KNOW WHAT I SAW! I have to stop him. And I'll take down anyone who gets in my way!" Sean yelled shocking them before Reznov blasted him with lightning knocking him out.
"Ok...Now I'm really concerned." Reznov said.
Later
Sean slowly woke up with a groan as he found himself strapped down to a bed making him growl.
"Do we really need to keep him tied down?" Korra asked making him listen.
"He flat threatened us." Reznov said.
"Look I know my brother he wouldn't do something like that." Turok said before sneezing.
"We need to run some tests on him." Julia said.
"Oh man." Sean said seeing he screwed up.
"Alone again, Kruger?" Unalaq asked making him growl as he came from behind a curtain. "As long as I'm around, you are never alone." Unalaq said.
Sean of course tried to get out of his restraints.
"Relaxe, Kruger. I promise you won't feel a thing." Unalaq said forming a blade of water.
In the other room
"Theres gotta be something we missed." Luke said.
"Everything in his bloodwork showed up fine. He's not sick or insane. But something is up." Julia said.
"Then why did he threaten you all like that?" Senna asked.
"Who knows. Maybe he is cloaking himself." Turok said.
"No. Cloaking magic can't just hide someone and only reveal himself to one person only. Thats not how it works. Besides we would have sensed his presence." Luke said.
"Well, there must be something." Tenzin said before an explosion occurred in the next room shocking them making them rush in seeing he was gone and the doors was heavily iced and encased in magic preventing them from leaving.
"Shit!" Reznov said taking out his father's hammer and started slamming into it knowing this was gonna take a while.
Thats when Jinora got into a mediative stance.
"What are you doing?" Turok asked.
"While I was trapped in the spirit world when Unalaq captured me I learned a couple things. I think I can connect to Sean and see what he sees." Jinora said before she started concentrating.
Sean groaned as he leaned against a wall before yelling holding his head.
"Jinora!" Sean yelled.
"Calm down. I'm here to help."
"No...He'll destroy you." Sean said.
"Let me see through your eyes." Jinora said.
Sean sighed as he opened his eyes showing they were brown like Jinora's.
"See? Unalaq isn't here. It's just..." Jinora tried to say before Unalaq appeared and blasted them.
"AHH!" Jinora yelled flying back.
"Jinora!" Tenzin yelled rushing to her.
"Unalaq! He is real." Jinora said.
"Wait you saw him?" Korra asked.
"Yeah...But something feels off. It's like only he can see him. And the injuries are real. But something is really off." Jinora said.
Sean yelled as Unalaq blasted him down some stairs.
Growling Sean tried to slash him with his axe but he kept dodging easily before striking him down.
"I always knew it was going to end this way." Unalaq said picking him up.
"No." Sean said weakly.
"No! Unalaq is about finish him off." Jinora said.
"ARGH!" Reznov yelled slamming his hammer into the wall as it cracked apart before they rushed out.
Sean groaned as he was against a wall.
"I have been waiting for this for 14 years. I won't stop, Not now, not ever. I am the thing that keeps you up at night. The evil that haunts every dark corner of your mind. I will never rest...And neither will you." Unalaq said.
"My friends say...You're not real." Sean said weakly making him chuckle.
"Do you truly think you could have gotten those injuries from someone who wasn't there?" Unalaq asked.
"All these wounds are real...But you have a damn scratch." Sean said before remembering everything thats happened.
"I didn't see anyone or hear anyone run past me." Luke said.
"There are no Crystals. There is no Unalaq." Reznov said.
"I am the thing that keeps you up at night. The evil that haunts every dark corner of your mind." Unalaq said.
"Oh son of a bitch." Sean said realizing what was going on.
"Your friends can't save you this time." Unalaq said.
"You're not actually here...You're just in my head. Thats how you know every move I make before I do. You're not real." Sean said making him glare.
"I'm real enough to finally finish you!" Unalaq yelled charging at him before Sean closed his eyes for a minute before opening them again seeing he was gone making him sigh in relief.
"Sean!" Senna yelled rushing to him.
"I'm ok...I finally figured out what the hell happened." Sean said.
Later
"Looks Unalaq pulled one last trick." Reznov said holding up a seal in hand. "This was placed in the back of your head. It's a curse seal. Can make you see, hear and feel anyone who's connected to it. And reads your mind to make sure that person knows what you're gonna do before you do. Thats how he was able to dodge all your attacks even though he wasn't really there." Reznov said.
"When did he put that on him?" Senna asked.
"The colossus." Sean said gaining everyone's attention. "When it fell on me he tried to drown me again. He must have put it on as a backup plan incase he failed." Sean said.
"The good news is you're clean. And we did a through search to make sure he didn't leave any other surprises." Luke said.
"Even when he's actually dead he's still a pain in the ass. It's hard for me to let go of all that hatred towards him even in death." Sean said.
"Get some rest." Tonraq said as Julia helped him out.
"Ok, he's better." Turok said behind a curtain before pulling it back. "NOW WHAT ABOUT ME! I'M DYING OVER HERE!" Turok yelled before sneezing several times turning into animals before he turned into a frog and croaked.
This made the girls burst out laughing at this.
"Oh Turok." Korra laughed before looking at her father who was talking with Reznov.
"What is it?" Senna asked.
"Um...The seal may have been placed in the back of his head...But it can't activate on its own. It has to be activated manually through another spell." Reznov said.
"What are you saying? That someone activated it?" Korra asked.
"Yup. And the signal came from the North...I'll give you two guesses who activated it." Tonraq said making her frown.
Later
Eska and Desna were in the palace at the north when the group arrived.
"This is unexpected." Desna said before yelling as Korra water bent him.
"Don't act like we're still family. We're not. Especially after you activated that seal in my husband." Korra said angered.
"Ah so you know about that. Yes that was our father's last request should something happen to him. We have no trouble killing the God Slayer. Did it succeed?" Eska asked.
"No. And thats gonna cost you. The whole northern water tribe knows what you did. I wouldn't be surprised if they force you out of the tribe." Korra said shocking them.
"You can't do that." Desna said.
"We can...And we did." Tonraq said as they left as the outcry of anger was heard from the Northern Tribe making the twins look very concerned.
Later
Sean sighed as he laid with his wife who smiled at him.
"That must have been a royal nightmare losing to him of all people." Korra said making him smirk.
"You have no idea. But at least this time he actually is gone for good...I hope." Sean said making her smile as she held him close as he recovered from the hell he's been through.
Authors Note: I would say this was an amazing chapter and now Sean can finally move forward in his life accepting that Unalaq is finally gone.
