I was motivated to write this next chapter even before I got reviews and I don't want you guys waiting forever for the next chapter especially the angst from last one. Apologies if sometimes my muse for this chapter slacks and it's a long time between chapters. Life happens you guys and loss of motivation is real. Anyways let's read on to see what happens next.
Jane got home after the awkward and uncomfortable car ride in Maura's car. The young Rizzoli went straight upstairs and into her room closing the door. She felt bad for hurting Maura but it was for the best. So she thought anyways. She was at a loss of what to do. Jane loved Maura more than anyone and she wanted to protect her. Maybe she went about it the wrong way. Jane leaned back in her bed, recalling in her mind what happened the other day.
It was the day after Frank went to jail, Jane was at home alone, Frankie and Tommy went to go hang out with a friend and Angela went on a date with Korsak to get her mind off of things, Jane could tell that her mother was hurting that Frank got sent away, even though Angela liked that Korsak was willing to woo her. Jane didn't even want to think about her mother dating already. Jane had gotten a phone call from Frank and she didn't know it at the time because it wasn't a number in her contacts she answered anyways. She got chills when he started talking, he even asked if she could come visit him at the prison. She told him no, but it all honesty she did want to see her father locked up, look him in the eye for the first time since the 'acccident' as Frank called it. Jane didn't tell him she would come though, just in case she got there and changed her mind, which she didn't.
When Jane got through security in the prison there was an open room where she sat at a table. There was another man probably in his late twenties, early thirties staring at her from across the room. Jane shifted uncomfortably she didn't like being stared at. She really wanted to change her mind now, but her father had just entered the room. He was led to the table and she tried to get comfortable still not losing the attention of that other man. She almost didn't hear her father speak.
"Janie, I thought you weren't going to come, thank you so much for coming."
Jane scowled at the man in front of her, he looked like he got into a fight. His face was bruised, his knuckles had scrapes on them. "What happened to you?"
"Oh nothing serious, just a little scuffle with someone during recess. No big deal, you look well."
"So why did you want to see me?" Jane asked, not caring for small talk.
"I don't belong here Jane. I'm not a criminal, it was an accident, you know that."
"No, I don't know that. You physically hurt me, me falling down the stairs shouldn't have happened either way. I hate knowing that I'm related to you, that I have got anger issues from you."
"You and I are pretty much the same, I always felt like we were close. I love you Janie and I just... I won't bother you ever again if you tell the judge in next week's trial that it was an accidental slip down the stairs. That I would never mean to cause any harm to you or your brothers."
Jane glanced at her father, "You're absolutely pathetic, you know that? Trying to get me to lie just so you can get out of here. Nobody wants to bail you out for a reason, you're all alone."
"You shouldn't talk to your father that way, I raised you for 18 years and you've been nothing but an ungrateful little shit."
"I will not sit here and be put down by an asshole like you." Jane waved over a security guard who came to get Frank walking him out.
"This isn't over Janie, you hear me."
"Is that a threat Pop? I hope you rot in jail." Jane yelled at him as he disappeared into the hallway. She noticed the other man who was eavesdropping on their conversation, a smile plastered on his face. Jane walked over another security guard, "Am I allowed to talk to another inmate while I'm here."
"Um, are you talking about him over there?" he gestured to the man, who looked away quickly.
"Yes, and I'm kind of confused on why he's in this room if no one is visiting him."
"Sometimes inmates get some treatment just so they don't go off the wall. If you want to go talk to him, I'll just be over here keeping an eye on him."
"He's chained to the table, I don't think he can cause any harm," Jane mentioned before going over to the man, sitting across from him.
The man looked up his grin widening, "Why hello there, so nice of you to join us."
"Join us?" Jane looked at him confused.
"Me and the officer, it got lonely here with no one visiting their loved ones. So I guess that was your father you were talking to. Is that what he did to you?" he nodded towards her arm with the cast.
"Yeah, pushed me down the stairs in a fit of anger."
"To be honest he's in the cell next to me, he said some shit so the next time we got outside I took care of him. No one should cause harm to a woman, especially one who looks like you."
Jane sighed, "Um thanks... I knew he deserved getting beat, get a taste of his own medicine."
"That's a good girl, I bet you're so strong and independent. You really are nice company. I think I'm ready to go back to my cell though. Nice meeting you, he called you Janie?"
"It's Jane actually, and you are?"
"Charles Hoyt, at your service," he smirked, the way he grinned gave her chills, not the good kind. Jane waved over the guard who came over concerned.
"Everything alright here ma'am?"
"Yeah, he said he wanted to go back to his cell now."
"Yes officer, I'm ready to go down for a nap," he told the man who undid his handcuffs. "Nice meeting you Jane," he smirked, getting a chance to bend down to whisper in her ear after getting a whiff of her scent. "You have a really nice neck."
Jane in that moment felt like she was going to be sick, after Hoyt was led away another officer came to walk Jane out of the building. During her bus ride home she couldn't get the creepy feeling of the man she had a conversation with. She knew when she got home she was going to research exactly what Charles Hoyt did to end up in jail and that was what she did.
In present time, Jane shivered in her bed, wanting to get his voice out of her head, but it was there. That visit to jail was when Jane's nightmares started, after reading about how Hoyt attempted to murder a couple on a summer evening while she was on her Paris trip. He went to jail not only for his attempt but how he started stalking this other couple.
She had some dreams about her and Maura being attacked or followed. She started avoiding everybody she cared about as though to protect them from any harm. That's the real reason Jane wanted to avoid Maura, the paranoia set in making it hard for Jane to sleep at night. The odds of Hoyt being released from prison were slim to none, so that should have given Jane a comforting feeling, but it didn't. Jane used Frost words to be the reason for her breaking up with Maura, that Maura didn't deserve her. She didn't want Maura having these same fears and paranoia, so she kept the real issue to herself.
But was it worth all this pain she was putting Maura through. She pulled the ring out of her pocket, just looking at it. "I don't know what I'm doing."
When Maura made it home, she went to get ready for bed, she could cry in the shower without someone hearing. Her father was the only one who was home and Maura definitely did not want to confide in that man.
About thirty minutes later Maura was all settled in bed, shutting off her lamp when her cell phone vibrated saying she got a message. She looked through her phone and she actually had three messages. One from Frost asking if all went well, she didn't want to respond to him because she knew she'd start crying. A second one from Garrett Fairfield asking if they could talk, and the third one was from Angela Rizzoli, saying Jane locked herself in her room and she had no idea what was going on and that she's been being weird all week asking Maura if she noticed. Maura replied to Angela first saying Jane is probably going through some things and she's not being open about it.
Maura went to dial Garrett's number, he picked up immediately. "Hey Maura, thanks for calling me, I wasn't sure if you were busy or not."
"What's up Garrett?"
"Did you know my mother went down to Boston for a few days? For a business trip?"
Maura laughed bitterly, "Yeah she came down for business alright..."
"Wait, she didn't..."
"I'm afraid so, father bribed me with a brand new car so I wouldn't say anything. I'm really tired of this crap, I think we should just tell Constance and your father. I don't think we should protect our aldulterous parents anymore. He swore it wouldn't happen again and yet here we are."
"This is honestly some bullshit. I can't believe they'd keep this up. I'll talk to my father tonight since he's home."
"Mother won't be here for another few days, she's in New York actually."
"Well I think you should come spend the weekend in the big apple, but I mean Jane and you probably have plans so you could wait until Constance gets back in Boston."
"Actually Jane is busy this weekend, but I don't feel like leaving Boston. Just in case she becomes not so busy."
"Alright, I'll let you know how my talk with my father goes and get back to you. I hope he won't be upset we kept it a secret for so long."
"Well it shouldn't have happened again, seriously I have no earthly idea how someone can have an affair, it's seriously pathetic. Does I love you mean nothing to anyone these days?" She asked, not only talking about their parents but how Jane just gave up on her, on them.
"Are you and Jane having problems?" Garrett asked, and Maura hated how well the boy knew her and how she was feeling.
"No, just like I said she's busy. I do hope your talk with your father goes well. Talk to you later."
"Okay, goodnight Maura Isles."
"Goodnight Garrett," she spoke softly, with a yawn before hanging up her phone, curling up, with her knees pulled up to her chest. She really wish she could talk to Jane right now, all she really wanted was her to hold her close, and have Jane promising to her that she would never let her go. She honestly hoped that Jane was really thinking things over at this given moment, she didn't want to be apart from the Rizzoli woman for long.
So there we have it the aftermath of Rizzles break up, the reason Jane is acting odd and the arrival of Hoyt, I was honestly going to have Paddy Doyle be there but Hoyt would definitely have Jane not being herself, he is the one who gives me the most creeps from the show and novels. Maura's life just seems to slowly be falling apart and all she wants to do is confide in Jane who is struggling with her demons. Your words of encouragement were definitely the highlight of my day and the reason the new chapter is up. Tell me your thoughts. Our girls will communicate soon.
