chapter 4!
So... the follows, favorites and reviews doubled over night. thank you all for the kind words, it really encourages me to continue.
another comment i forgot to address last time was about of our OC/SI, if he will ever reveal himself. If it ever happens (which i'm leaning towards never) it won't be for a long while.
now on with the chapter!
After giving All Might directions we finally pull up outside the apartment blocks where i live. Locking the doors, we slowly make our way over and up the stairs, but before we reach the correct floor he stops me on the last landing.
"So Midoriya, have you thought about how we're going to do this?" he asks. Moving heavy scrap with straws for arms in the scorching heat doesn't leave much time for thinking, but in between the multiple breaks i took throughout the day i realized that, this might be a pretty easy sell.
"I'd been thinking this would be an uphill battle but having sat on it, i think we can do it." I pray "We just need to convince her of two things, that dropping out of school won't actually be an issue. I always do great on tests," at least i'm assuming old me did " and that by doing so i can speed though the rest of the material leaving me more time to prepare for the U.A exam." which is true.
All Might is nodding along as i talk. "And lastly we need to convince her that this training will actually give you a fighting chance at getting in, without revealing that by the end you will be getting a quirk." He unfolds his arms with a final nod. "That everything, Young Midoriya?"
"Like i said though, that might be pretty easy." He looks confused. "It's like this. I don't doubt she thinks i could do the online courses, it's more the 'quirkless hero' angle of things but even then i don't think she has a reason to object. I speed though the rest of my school work, then spend the rest of the year getting fit and ready. If by the end i still don't get into the Hero course, which if i manage to use One For All is doubtful, then U.A is still a top end school even in it's normal departments." It looks like he knows where i'm going with this now.
"Which she will be more than happy with." I nod. "Hell even IF that is what happened you would have also picked up a healthy exercise regimen afterwards, plus done some work for the community. Amazing work my boy! I knew i picked the best successor!" And there's the boisterous laugh again, hope no one heard that.
"Thanks Toshinori sir. Ready?" Receiving a thumbs up i head up towards my front door and unlock it.
"Mom! you home?" I shout as i step in and kick my shoes off. All Might says a little "excuse me" as he does the same.
"i'm in the kitchen sweetie!" I can already smell the food, the katsudon yesterday was amazing. "Did you being as guest?"
"Yeah mom, that friend i talked about this morning." We both step into the kitchen as mom just puts the lid back on top of the pot sitting on the stove then turns to face us. hotpot?
She looks startled for a second before wiping her hands on her apron as she walks over to introduce herself. Not expecting my 'friend' to be an adult let alone look like a mummy huh?
"I'm sorry for acting like that i just wasn't expecting Izuku's friend to be...an older gentlemen. I'm Midoriya Inko." she bows. I've got to get used to no handshakes huh?
All Might bows back. "Hahaha it's quite alright miss Midoriya! I'd be shocked too. My names Toshinori Yagi and i'm here to talk to you about becoming Izuku's trainer."
"trainer?" she asks. Even does a little head tilt. Maybe i wasn't over selling it after all.
"I've got some stuff i want to talk to you about mom, can we move over to the dinning table?" I gesture over to the right as i walk towards it. Mom looks puzzled before following.
After sitting down across from mom, with All Might to my left i start the sales pitch. Here goes nothing.
"Do you remember yesterday after the sludge villain attack, how i came home a little late?" she nods. "Well i bumped into Toshinori on my way home. He saw what happened, with me running in and all and wanted to ask me why. I explain that it was my friend from school," friend really,REALLY loosely. "And how non of the heroes weren't doing anything, and how i just...run before i realized it." All Might cracks a smile but i don't think mom notices. "He asked me if i wanted to be a hero and i said... I said that i wasn't sure i could be one anymore." Aaaaand there goes his smile. Moms eyes widen, bet she never thought i'd be saying that.
"He asked me why and i told him that i was quirkless, that it would be to dangerous for me to try." I smile as i remember that scene, got emotional the first time i read it. I look over at All Might and he gives me a firm nod, i turn back to face mom.
"He said i could be a hero, that if i trained hard enough and really give it my all i could do it." mom starts to look guilty, probably remembering the 'I'm sorry' moment. If this becomes a tough sell i might have to bring it up, but i don't want to first thing i do in my new life is to make my mother cry.
"Toshinori went on to say that he's worked with heroes before." her eyes snap over to him. Not a complete lie either, he HAS, just not in the way she thinks i mean. already lying like Naomasa is in the room, guess i won't need to worry about him anymore if i'm this much of a natural lair. Wonder what that says about me though.
"He's offered to train me, that was where i was today, for the ten months leading up to the U.A entrance exams." mom looks skeptical.
"Miss Midoriya." All Might steps in. "We were down at the Takoba Municipal beach, hauling trash from the sand onto the back of my pickup. Moving different sized, and weighted objects helps to build muscles in all of the groups in his body. I've even come up with and created a workout and dietary plan for Izuku to follow for the coming months." I grab it from my bag and pass it over to her, she starts to read it over before splitting her focus as All Might continues.
"i believe, no, i know that Izuku has a heroic heart, and it would be a shame we if didn't try to nurture it and give him a fighting chance." We sit in silence, as mom reads more of the workout page and mulls over what shes hearing.
"Okay." Here we go. "But i don't understand why you brought this to me. You could have done this without my permission." alright that went well, onto the second, and harder issue.
"I want to drop out of school." Great job there, talk about ripping the band-aid off.
"WHAT?!" Yeah well, i saw that coming.
"Sorry i worded that wrong. I mean't that i want to drop of out Aldera Junior High and switch to online courses to finish off my education before enrolling at U.A." Now she looks confused, time to sell it.
"i believe that i can finish this last years work faster at home than at school, and in doing so leaves me more time to train and prepare for the exam. Not to brag but i'm doing really well and am even ahead in some classes." Seeing as I've already gone though school before, a refresher is probably all i need before starting the the final exams. though definitely need to study for history though.
"I'm prepared to take this next month to grind out the rest of my classes before fully focusing on getting ready for U.A and the hero course." Got her on the ropes, one last push.
"I would like to point out though that, failing getting into the hero course," not much change of that. " if i still pass the written exam i'll be placed into the general education department and if i still want to be in the hero business i could transfer into the business course or the support course."
I can see the decision weighing on her by her face. we all laps into nervous silence once more as me and All Might wait for her answer.
"When you were four years old and you were suffering because of finding out you were quirkless," she smiles sadly with tears in her eyes. "I said i was sorry and I've been angry with myself for what i did back then." she purses for a moment before looking over at All Might.
"So you've worked with heroes before?" Toshinori responds with a "Yes ma'am."
"Were any of them quirkless?" Oh boy.
"No. But a lot of heroes out there don't have quirks like All Might and Endeavor. There is a even a teacher right now at U.A that has a quirk that lets him disable other people quirks by maintaining eyesight. It also doesn't work on mutant type quirks. So while it does give him an advantage he still effectively fight quirkless." She looks thoughtful. Way to go All Might! Now bring it home!
"He has trained himself with all kinds of capture weapons and has put a ton of work into his craft, which is why we've come to you with this proposal. Izuku will have to put in just as much work if he wants to stand to the same level as his peers, which also means he needs all the time he can get. I strongly believe he can do it." All Might stand out of the chair and bows low.
"Please Miss Midoriya, won't you put your trust in me so i can help your son strive for his dream!" I quickly get out of my chair and join him in a bow.
"Please mom!"
A few seconds pass and me and All Might share a nervous look before we hear a sigh and raise our heads.
*sigh* "Fine." WOOHOO! "I'll phone the school tomorrow for the necessary paper work. But you promise me young man that you'll study hard even after you finish your finals for the written part of the entrance exam."
"Of course mom i won't let you down!" I run over and give her a hug. This is the first big change I've made to the 'canon', but i don't think anything to crazy will spiral out of control from this. I'll do your mom proud old Izuku, just like you would have done.
chapter 4 in the bag. our first big change that will surely change the outcome of the training for OFA. i had though of just skipping the Inko talk but felt that it would be a miss step if i didn't go through with it, so there you go. next chapter will most likely skip in time a bunch before we reach the point where our Izuku asks All Might for OFA early. we also might be seeing a familiar face early.
