Author's introduction: Welcome. So, I see you decided to check my story out. I'm guessing you noticed it's a long one So hopefully you're in the mood for an epic adventure. I hope you find it a real page turner...or rather mouse scroller. Hopefully I keep you in suspense and guessing as you read as well.
This story is also under an edit. I didn't really hit my stride until chapter 4 (Reviewers agree!) I figure it's time for me to go back and give those a re-do. Get the story going faster. I should Also note that early on I didn't have a Beta reader so chapters aren't polished well. I did just get a beta reader and chapter 1 has been edited others being fixed soon.
Frozen 2 notes. I have 65 chapters and over 400K words invested in this so the events of the sequel will have to be added in later as best as I can fit them into my narrative.
Please read and review!
Enjoy the story!
The Frozen and Pierced Heart
Chapter 1
"Elsa, what have you done," the King yelled as he burst into the great hall.
An eight-year-old Elsa sat on the frozen floor, clutching her sister's body, "I didn't mean to, it was an accident!"
"Elsa." Her mother ran over to them, kneeling and examining her Anna. "You killed her."
"What, no," Elsa cried.
"You monster, you killed your sister!" The Queen stared; her eyes seemed to pierce into Elsa's soul with an accusing look.
"No, Anna, come back!" Elsa frantically shook her sister's body, trying to wake her. As she did her parents drifted back and Anna's body faded into nothingness. Suddenly glossy black brick walls sprung from the floor around her, they reached to the ceiling with a crash, locking into place. Metal bars rose up around her, filling the room with an eerie clang. She looked around paralyzed with fear.
"You're too dangerous, Elsa. You need to be locked away. We have to keep you away from everyone," her father's voice seemed to float through the walls around her.
"No, Mamma, Papa, please," as she pleaded, she slowly changed from a little girl, into her present sixteen-year-old self. She stood in the center of the room looking for a way out. An eerie dim blue glow lit the room and she saw it. An open door. Elsa ran for it, but it slammed shut, sealing her inside. She fell to the floor and sobbed, calling out into the darkness, but there was no answer. She was truly alone.
"Elsa?" A voice echoed from the darkness. Elsa jumped and looked around. It sounded so familiar.
"Anna? Where are you," she called into the darkness.
"Elsa," Anna voice whispered, "why did you kill me?"
Elsa looked around frantically for her, "I didn't mean too, I lost control, I'm sorry," her voice cracked around the words, pleading with her sister. The she stopped, recalling the events of that night, "Wait, this can't be right. I did strike you with my powers, but the trolls saved you. Anna, I would never hurt you, I love you!"
"If you love me so much why do we never play anymore? Why do we never talk? How come you can't so much as look at me," The voice accused.
"I want to, Anna, but I don't want to hurt you. You have to be safe," Elsa answered desperately as she spun around looking for her sister.
Anna drifted into view, walking through the dungeon walls. She was no longer the little girl Elsa had hurt, but the Anna of now.
"Anna!" Elsa ran to her sister, but the look on Anna's face stopped her in her tracks. It wasn't the smiling, happy face she was used to seeing whenever she managed to steal a glance. This Anna's eyes were cold, her face fearful.
"Elsa, stop," her voice as harsh and cold as her eyes, "You know you can't touch me. You can't touch anyone. You destroy everything, the storm inside you threatens everyone. You need to stay away from us. It's best for everyone if we just forgot you. Goodbye, Elsa." Anna slowly turned and walked away.
Elsa ran after her but hit the wall, she pounded on it, calling out for Anna, for her mother and father. "Anna! Momma! Papa! Please don't leave me alone! I'm sorry!"
Elsa woke with a start, her room was cold, ice crawling across the walls, snow drifts forming in piles on the floor. She remembered her sister was still alive, but that she couldn't run to her or hug her no matter how much she wanted to. She'd woken from one nightmare only to find herself only to find reality far crueler.
She pushed herself up out of bed, wiping away the icy tears that had formed in her sleep, and walked over to the frosted window. She cleared a patch and looked out over the sleeping Arendelle, wishing she could feel that peaceful. She'd give anything to control her magic, to be able to run to her sister and hold her like they did when they were little. Even after eight years the nightmares refused to let up, only getting worse as the years ticked by.
Elsa hugged herself, a habit she picked up when no one else could hold her. She had grown use to her life of solitude and isolation, but she still hated it. She'd give anything to change it, but she knew she couldn't go about like things were normal. She was a danger to everyone and not a day went by that she didn't think about the night she almost killed Anna.
She remembered the old troll telling her there was beauty in her power, but she couldn't see it. The only thing she saw was the pain and suffering it caused. She almost killed her sister and now only ever saw her sister in passing. She barely saw her mother and father, and when she did see them, she couldn't risk touching them either.
Despite all this, she was still heir to the throne, meant to be Queen one day. She shuddered at the thought of what the people of Arendelle would think if they found out just how dangerous their future queen was.
Elsa left the window and crawled back into bed, laying awake. She wished that she could show Anna that she really did love her. That she cared about her people. She held on to the thin hope that maybe, one day someone would care about her too, without fearing her power. She started to fall back into an uneasy sleep, her last wish that someone, anyone, would just hold her one day.
From outside the council chambers, shouting could be heard through the day. Inside a heated discussion were taking place concerning the royal family and the future of the nation.
"Your Majesty, you must see reason," an advisor shouted, "the kingdom cannot have a family who locks themselves away!"
"We do no such thing," the King replied back, his fingers rolling into a fist as he tried to rein in his anger, "the Queen and I find time to go out among the people."
"And then return to a castle locked up so tight that we, your own council, are barely allowed to enter!"
"We have our reasons," the King shouted back.
"And what was those," another noble asked from the other side of the room, "it's been eight years and we have yet to be given a satisfactory answer."
"It doesn't not concern you," the King replied sternly.
"And why shouldn't it concern us," a cold voice asked from the front row. The voice belonged to Count Snider. A heavy-set man with black, greying hair. He was one of the more influential nobles and by far one of the more argumentative ones. He stroked his beard as he spoke, "why should this—oddity not concern us?"
"Excuse me." The King glared at the Count.
"And then there is the questions concerning the girls."
"You will refer to them properly!"
"Of course, your Majesty, my apologies," the count looked bored as he spoke, "however, there is legitimate concern about the two princesses."
"What concerns," the King asked icily.
"Not so much Princess Anna, though she never leaves the castle, she has been seen outside her room. Your heir, however, stays behind a locked door. I have not seen Princess Elsa since she was 8 years old. "Snider looked around the room. "In fact, raise your hand if you have seen Princess Elsa at all since the gates were shut."
Two nobles raised their hands slowly.
"Oh good," Snider said sarcastically, "at least we have proof she still exists. Tell me gentlemen, did either of you speak with her at all?"
Both men shook their heads, muttering something about only seeing a glance of her as she went into the study or library.
Snider through his arms out wide. "So, there we have it, the heir to Arendelle's throne, who turns 17 in just over a month, has been virtually unseen since she was 8. And let us not forget that you, Your Majesty, have not only rejected two suitors, but you would not even let them see her when they travelled all the way here. One which was from a very rich and powerful kingdom."
Murmurs flew around the room as Snider continued his speech, "everyone here has heard the rumors flying all over the kingdom about the Crown Princess that no one has seen in years. People are starting to ask what is wrong with her."
"There is nothing wrong with Elsa." The King roared.
"Then prove it to us," Snider shot back, "bring her down here and let her speak to us. Assure us, you Majesty, that we have nothing to fear."
"Absolutely not." The King shook his head, biting down the twinge of panic that ran through him. There was no way of knowing how they would react if Elsa lost control and that was a risk he would not take with his daughter's life.
"You see, the King is gambling the future of Arendelle on a shut in," Snider yelled as he turned addressing the counsel.
"How dare you!"
The council chambers erupted into chaos.
Elsa sat in her room, leaning against her door trying to control her breathing, despite the distance from the council chambers she could still hear the shouts echoing through the halls. She couldn't make out much, just a few words here and there, but she knew it wasn't a happy meeting. She also knew she was the subject of the current uproar.
She had snuck out to the library to get a new book when she heard her name mentioned through the closed doors of the council chambers. Normally she wasn't one to ease drop, but the amount of anger her name had been said with lured her closer to the chamber to hear what was being said. The cruel and ugly words she heard made her anger and sad. A small part of her wanting to storm into the council and shut them all up. Tears prickled at her eyes as she realized, even though, deep down she wanted to be brave, she knew if she went in, she would lose control and they would all see just how dangerous she was to the future of Arendelle.
Tears stung and froze to her cheeks though as she realized they were right, in a way. There was something wrong with her. She looked down at her gloved hand as she tried to hold back the tears, wishing like she had so many times before that this power would just leave her.
She stood outside the chamber doors until she realized small flurries were starting to form in the hallway. She knew she had to get out of there before it got worse or someone saw her. Elsa ran back to her room, repeating, "Conceal, don't feel."
She now sat against the inside of her bedroom door, her sanctuary and her prison. She felt the tears freeze as the fell and wished she could be brave, that she didn't have to live in constant fear of being a danger to everyone she loved. Elsa hugged herself tight as she sat on the floor, a chill sweeping the room, flurries falling despite her attempt at control.
How? She thought, how could she ever be Queen? She couldn't let anyone besides her mother and father come near her. Despite the risk that even that carried, Elsa took comfort in their presence, knowing that while they were around there would be two people who loved and understood her.
She didn't get to see them often though; they were busy running a kingdom and she understood that. She had become used to being alone, but that didn't mean she'd ever grow to like it. She wanted to love, to hold Momma and Papa, to play with her little sister again.
Elsa thought back to what the troll had told her, about the beauty in her power, but she couldn't see the point of any beauty in it if the tradeoff was hurting people. She drew her knees up, wrapping her arms tighter around herself, wishing there was someone else she could talk to, someone who could understand her.
An all too familiar knock interrupted her thoughts.
Anna had also heard the arguments coming from the council chambers, but unlike Elsa, she was a little more familiar with what was going on due to her roaming around the castle. She did not, however, fully understand it, and wanted to barge into the council chambers and yell at those awful men and tell them they couldn't talk about her sister like that.
Although, truth be told she also wanted to know why Elsa rarely left her room. They had been so close when they were little, but one day it all changed without any sort of warning. As the years went by, Anna stopped knocking on her sister's door as often as she once did. She slowly grew tired with the pleading at a closed door and not knowing why the sister she adored refused to open it.
She never gave up on her sister though, despite the fact Elsa had shut her and the world out, Anna would always love her big sister. She had the memories of everything they used to do together and held onto the hope that things would one day be that way again.
As Anna wandered the halls getting madder by the minute at the things the council had said about her parents and her sister, she thought she heard something. She stopped and listened, it sounded like crying. She quickened her steps, trying to find the source of the noise, when she heard footsteps echo just around the corner. Anna ran after the sound, turned the corner just in time to see her crying sister run into her room. It was the first time in weeks she'd actually seen her.
Anna ran to the door and raised her fist to knock, but hesitated, knowing what answer she'd likely get in return. But this was Elsa and she couldn't ignore what she just saw. She knocked gently, "Elsa?" As usual there was no answer, but that wasn't going to stop her. Anna tried again, "Elsa, are you okay?" She was greeted with more silence. "Elsa, I know you can hear me, don't pay attention to what those awful men say. They don't know you; they just care about money and politics. Just know, that no matter what, I'm here and I love you." She paused for a minute and listened, "Well, if you ever need me just ask, I'm always here for you."
Anna didn't know, but on the other side of the door, Elsa was soaking in every word her sister said, wishing more than anything that she could fling the door open and hold her sister tight. But she was afraid of what would happen if she did, and instead held herself, sitting silently on the cold floor.
The argument in the council chambers deteriorated, going from bad to worse.
"Enough!" Lord Snider stood sweeping his arm out in front of him. "If the King will not see reason, I propose we adjourn and discuss other options."
"Snider, do not do something there is no coming back from," the King warned, fearing what other options the man could be planning, he doubted any of them would be good.
"Never, your Majesty, but perhaps you should have followed that same advice when you decided to permanently close the castle gates." Snider exited the room, a few council members loyal to him following behind.
The King stayed in the chambers, discussing various issues with the remaining members of the council, those still loyal to him when an army captain entered the room. He stopped to bow to the King and saluted the captain of the guard. "Your Majesty, I have a message from Admiral Hauge."
The King took the offered letter, "Thank you, captain." He read the message, frowned and read it again. He looked up at the captain. "Get me General Nohr."
"Yes, Majesty." The captain bowed and exited quickly. The King turned and addressed what remained of his council.
"Gentlemen, what I am about to order may seem extreme, but if successful it will prevent a larger rebellion."
To be continued . . .
Well I hope you enjoyed chapter 1. This is by far the shortest chapter in the story. The next two chapters will set up the rest of the story. As I said before Chapter 4 is when it takes off.
Throughout the story I try to add some historical accuracy (in a historical fictional way) and grit to the Disney stuff
